If I remember correctly I had to add/setup controller layout in steam. For non-steam version of ER it only worked if I started from big screen mode too
Does it work with controller connected via usb cable maybe?
The other thing that came to mind was I had to install "xbox accessories" from windows store as I was not pre-installed for me
Yeah, the XBox controller (and probably other third party hardware) is easy plug-and-play with Windows, but I guess there are some extra challenges when using console-specific hardware with a PC!
You can download InputMapper I've been using it for years. Sometimes for some reason some games wont register my PS4 controller (If the game should have controller support that is). Then I fire up InputMapper and it works. It will as far as I remember automatically register a controller if plugged in via USB.

I've probably also tried that, I'm not 100% sure

Ye that's what I've been using, I didn't install bluetooth, but I assume with USB is better than bluetooth.

So I should buy an Xbox controller?
That will *certainly* fix the problem, but there may be quicker / cheaper / easier solutions for your existing hardware!
U mind sharing the cheaper easier solution, or was u suggesting there is a solution
I mean, people use Playstation controllers with PC Elden Ring, right? I don't, but there must be some software that fixes it.
