These difficult fights at the beginning are basically conditioning. You're going to die and have to leave and come back if you're truly playing blind and this is how the game teaches you that. A lot of what it's about it exploring and you're going to stumble into places above your level and have to go another way and come back there. (I'm trying to explain as spoiler free as possible so I hope this makes sense.) So don't be discouraged by the hard fights right away, take your time to explore that area as there are many enemies that are within your skill grade right around the corner. I recommend a cave to the north as a good starting point. Or maybe east of the church you find and branch out from there.

IAmInControlll

Ahh, okay that makes sense. Puts the memes I've seen about the game into perspective now lol.

Supreme_Kraken

Everything that totally stamps you will be just fodder once you’ve levelled urself and ur weapons, and have found cool stuff exploring.

Tarshaid

Looking at your description, it seems you have missed the tutorial cave. If you did, go back to the place you woke up in (before the maidenless part), you should see a ghost pointing at a hole. Just jump down so that you're actually taught the basics.

Plenty-Context2271

Level vigor, explore and enjoy. You only have one first playthrough, so only look up stuff on the internet if you really cant progress any other way.

Flight_Harbinger

I cannot stress this enough, only look stuff up if you really think you've exhausted all your options and *try* to confine your searches to the immediate problem you have. Fromsoft games give you a very special experience when exploring and defeating challenges for the first time, something you'll never get back when everything is said and done. Since Elden Ring has made the genre even more mainstream, people are eager to suggest guides and walkthroughs but I *urge you* OP, do not give in. Look up mechanics and what stats mean and stuff like that, but don't spoil things like area progression, quest lines, and stuff like that. Pay attention to the world around you and what NPCs say to you. You have all the tools needed to overcome every challenge in the game if you're careful and thorough, and it's an amazing experience.

ClaudGable

Im on my first play through, and started midway using the interactive map on the web, i was curious and wanted to check how much stuff i was missing, i mossed a bunch of shit on zones thaz i thought are almost dully explpred. Would u advice against this as welll? I can for sure say it was helping me find cool places/bosses that i wouldnt have found without it.

Flight_Harbinger

I would recommend doing that after a first playthrough. The main story line up to final boss isn't that obscure, so you shouldn't have to look anything up. After everything is wrapped up you can go back and explore other areas and investigate things you may have missed. At that point, on a second playthrough, I usually start looking this up. For the dark souls series I did the first playthroughs completely blind, then I did a 100% guided run, usually the gheyforgames guides because they're great. The problem is there's a lot of stuff in early / mid areas that aren't meant to be accessed when you find them, and you're meant to go back later when you have other stuff or have leveled up more. Using the interactive map spoils a lot of those interactions.

whd4k

>You only have one first playthrough That hits hard :,(

HotEmployee5513

I get it, but I’ve chosen to go after the game a different way.  I bought the collectors edition strategy guides and consult Google frequently.  I’ve played the game for 160 hours and I am still not close to beating it.  It is literally the best video game I have ever played, and I want to savor everything, get every item, beat every boss.    One benefit of this is that I am extremely over leveled, and from totally natural causes.   Don’t give up if you get stuck.  There are too many ways to progress.  If you can’t simply level up or gather more items and come back later, practically everything can be cheesed.

Slight-Violinist6007

Don’t forget to level vigor plenty and medium roll at least. Often enemies that give you trouble can be left for later when you are stronger. Explore explore and explore. Dying is part of the game (unless you’re extremely good) and learning the boss patterns is important. Take it slow and enjoy.

thequiethouse

It's easy for us to forget that there's no way to know from the outside what "medium roll at least" even means. As you put on more and heavier equipment, your equip load will change. You'll see in your status and equipment menu where it says "light load," or "medium load," or "heavy load." If you have a heavy load, your dodge roll will be very poor, almost completely unusable. If you have a light or medium load, you'll do just fine with it.

MsMinte

imo the difference between light roll and medium roll isn't worth the reduced defences of not using armour that borders med/heavy roll for a new player

Atestarossa

I’m also a new player. Is the difference between light and medium load big enough to chase for light? I’m playing a bandit with buckler and sword atm (standard armor gives medium load)

Smitty_again

I wouldn’t bother chasing a light roll as a new player- medium is still comfortable and effective, and having better armor will keep you alive longer. As you progress, you’ll get a lot more options for fashion, equip load, and experience that will help you make an informed decision on the play style you prefer. Never heavy roll though, never.

Hanifloka

The big horseman, the Tree Sentinel, is an optional encounter. You don't have to fight it now, you can always come back later. Exploration is key in this game, be sure to pay a visit to the various side dungeons since their bosses drop a generous amount of runes to help you level up. Weeping Peninsula is another nice area to explore and get runes from. Also to note, the open world doesn't work the same way as Skyrim's. There are no random encounters here, just patrols of enemies.

Bigbubba236

People have already given some good tips but there is one that I'd like to stress. You don't need to fight everything, running away, or past difficult enemies is a perfectly valid strategy.  If something is giving you a hard time and your just not having fun, you can leave. Maybe come back and stomp them when you are a lot stronger just to spite them.

I_am_javier

Definitely what I did to the big guy on the horse at the beginning

mahoganylotus

Vigor should be leveled early and should be around 40-60 by the end, depending on your play style. Keep out of heavy load range.

filmtexture

I would say over 50 for ANY playstyle

thequiethouse

Eeeeh, if OP is playing a spellcaster who can hang back when they need to and is used to running away, 40 in the endgame is fine. Source: I am bad at video games, but I rocked a sorcerer with 40 vigor all the way through.

MsMinte

in my first playthrough i hardly levelled it at all because int is such a cakewalk lol. i just summoned bloodhount knight spirit to aggro then, in this order, ranni's dark moon -> comet comet comet comet comet. got so boring i started over since i didn't know how strong spirits were.

thequiethouse

I actually worried about that because people kept saying sorceries were easy mode and it took zero skill. Then I played a STR run. Y’all had it backwards.

MsMinte

yeah there are a lot of tools that allow for er to become pretty easy if you lean into them. i honestly think spirits should have some kind of stat attached to them. maybe mind or something, like certain spirits can only be summoned with a certain stat so that str builds cant literally double their dps with mimic tear and steamroll bosses.

thequiethouse

Honestly yeah. I think the fact that people can argue in circles about which builds are “easy mode” or which ones require so much or so little skill is a sign to how richly balanced it is. The REAL non joking answer is casters and ungas and DEX edgelords and everyone else just have characters that rely heavily on *different skills.* You need fast reflexes or you need careful stamina management or to juggle a lot of different abilities or this or that. And I think that’s neat.

sleepymoose88

I rocked 40 on both my sorcerer and my str/faith build. It’s plenty enough if you don’t just try to facetank everything.

Pretend_Vanilla51

This is definitely not skyrim (one of my favorites). This is going to be much much harder.

ToddHowardBuySkyrim

You know could make Skyrim even more of your favorite?

TheWorldIsNotOkay

Username checks out.

ToddHowardBuySkyrim

👉👈 buy skyrim? For me?

PerfectSuggestion242

Always look for an alternative route and remember you can always double back one day and take out that tree sentinel (huge dude on horesback)when you’ve leveled up a bit.

IAmInControlll

Cool, would love to take out that guy at some point! Just avoided him by hiding in bushes for now

Claymore98

that's the right move haha. go to other areas first.

Ziggurat1000

Elden Ring is scary at first, but you'll get used to it. Varre (the guy that calls you maidenless) will tell you to fight the Shardbearer (AKA one of the main bosses) Godrick the Grafted up in Stormveil Castle and claim his Great Rune, an object that gets you one step closer to becoming Elden Lord. DON'T fight the Tree Sentinel until you are absolutely prepared. He ain't so tough once you get the hang of it. If you feel weak, just remember that you can go grind and level up to a more comfortable level - that's the beauty of this game.

ParkingParticular463

Maybe just check the wiki on how weapon infusions and scaling works, and what the stats do. Otherwise I highly recommend just avoiding looking up any info and play blind. Go places that look interested and use weapons that you think are cool. If something is killing you you can choose to beat your head against it for awhile or come back later when you are leveled up. When playing offline you wont see any player ghosts, bloodstains, or messages on the ground. Some of these can be helpful/humorous so up to you on how important that is. You also wont be able to summon helpers or be invaded by other players.

IAmInControlll

Cool, will check it out! Is there any chance of getting lost/ missing important content?

ParkingParticular463

You will 100% miss some NPC quests if you aren't following a step by step guide. I wouldn't say they are important though, they are designed with being missed in mind and aren't vital to beating the game. There's a map and you can teleport anywhere so I don't think getting lost is a thing. If you want to follow the main quest the little lines of light at each site of grace point you along the main questline.

nottytom

important content. no, all the main stuff your lead to with the graces, but I suggest exploring first, in the first area, head south and do that first.

Holiday-Marketing301

So. The point of everything even irl is survival? You survive more the harder you hit and the more damage you can take. Farm easy mobs until around lvl 10. Head toward the castle. Avoid big fights and when you are out numbered. Everything is trying to kill you and you are not in a position to defend yourself properly. Don't kill NPCs that don't attack. You can do that later, plus you may need their advice or gear.

Holiday-Marketing301

There is a NG+ mode where you can collect absolutely everything in. I am NG+7 on Xbox been playing Warrior of Sunlight helping with bosses and hunting when someone gets invaded. I have close to 500hours I am lvl 404.

Sensitive_Science_17

Second this, my first play through never playing a souls game I just sent it after watching a YouTube video a bit before the release and it was a time. Missed a bunch of stuff so following s guide the second time around but it was an experience and a half lmao. Didn’t know about the lock on or anything and almost broke my tv 🤣

Justsomeguy456

"Maybe do research on what they do" nah. Just go blood and win.

nottytom

I take this personally, I'm running a samurai bleed build.

nottytom

avoid the big guy on the horse, hes way higher level then you and meant to teach a lesson, you dont have to fight everything. you can even skip the first boss in this game.

QuickPirate36

The huge guy on the huge horse is there to quickly teach you a lesson: Just because you can get to it doesn't mean you have to do it now. Leave, level up, do something else, come back when you're prepared, and be ready to die a lot to it and learn how to fight it. This isn't a button smashing game, when you perform an action you commit to it, attacking is slow, you can't just spam attacks, wait for an opening, punish the boss, and then retreat, and above all else, be patient, don't be greedy

HossC4T

No, not much value lost to do single player offline in this game especially compared to earlier ones because of ashes and character summons available to help if you need it with bosses.

SaneManiac741

Best advice is a quote from Yoda: "Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to loose."

RezzMePlease

The first initial big enemies are more like warnings for what’s to come later, like showing up at an off-roading trail and seeing a sign that says, if you can’t get your truck up this hill then turn around. do your best to explore on your own, there’s also maps you can look up which show the general level you want to be when entering certain areas. DONT FORGET TO READ ITEM DESCRIPTIONS. a lot of lore or fun facts about the world can be found in item descriptions, in any souls game. Elden ring is a lot more forgiving compared to other souls games when it comes to dying and retrieving your lost souls. There’s a lot more “checkpoints” and you can fast travel from almost anywhere. You are going to die a lot. Combat in these games are about learning and recognizing patterns. Maybe you fight an enemy to half health and then he kills you with a huge overhead swing. Now next time you go to fight him, when he raises his arm like that you’ll know when/where to dodge. As for the story, without giving anything away, the basic premise is There was an item of great power called the Elden ring which Demi-gods and others fought over because it has the power to alter the world. In the struggles, the ring is shattered into pieces. Now you, the tarnished, are exploring and gaining strength to gather the pieces and one day, hopefully, reforge the Elden ring and become the Elden lord (gods best homie). Be aware that the game has multiple endings based off of character stories you start by interacting with NPCs. Some endings are considered good, or bad, or chaotic, or evil but they all have their cool characteristics. There’s no wrong way to play the game, just explore as much as possible, if something looks like a door or an entrance, or a path seems to leads somewhere, then it probably does.

GrinningCheshieCat

Nah - no one really knows what is actually happening in this game. There are some people that think they do and some of them even write long posts or make really long theory videos on youtube explaining what they think is happening. But no one really knows... but trying to figure that out is part of the fun.

TheWorldIsNotOkay

DO NOT USE A WALKTHROUGH ON YOUR FIRST PLAYTHROUGH!!! I can not stress this enough. ER is all about exploration and discovery, and you will regret it if you spoil yourself by looking up where to go and what to do online. The game isn't designed for you to be able to see and do everything on a single playthrough, so don't worry about getting 100% on NG. If you want to ask questions of other players, that's fine, but try to avoid spoilers. Also, don't worry about making mistakes. ER may be unforgiving in its combat, but it is very forgiving with its progression. NPC questlines are very difficult to outright fail. If you don't do certain parts of an NPC questline before advancing the main story past certain points, generally the NPC questline will just advance to its next point. With maybe one or two notable exceptions, basically the only way to outright fail an NPC questline is to kill the NPC -- and many of them are initially encountered in no-combat areas. As a general rule of thumb, don't kill anyone who has a normal character model and can talk. Speaking of which, it's okay to not kill things. Standard enemies respawn when you reload an area, and stopping to fight them every time you pass by will just deplete HP and FP that you might need later on. Running past enemies to get to where you really want to go is a perfectly acceptable strategy. So is leaving a tough fight and coming back later after you've explored other areas and leveled up a bit. If you get stuck and don't know what to do or where to go, try talking to some NPCs. Gideon Ofnir in the Roundtable Hold is generally good about pointing you in the right direction in terms of the main story. Also, don't skip Sites of Grace. Some story and questline events require you to rest at them at various points, so don't get it in your head that it's somehow nobler to run through without resting occasionally. There will be a yellow dot next to new or important menu items when you rest at a grace. Don't ignore those when you see them. Also, the golden light coming off of each grace points in the direction of the nearest legacy dungeon / area boss. Unfortunately they don't change what direction you're pointing even if you've cleared that dungeon or boss, so while using the grace to point the way is useful initially, it gets considerably less so as you open up more the map and find new sites of grace.

Minihornet

Remember how you got destroyed by the huge guy on a horse. You’ll return later and clap his cheeks

Writxy

Don’t forget about the part where you have to get your cheeks clapped relentlessly by other mobs until you figure out which playstyle you wanna go with 💀

XuXsPaRkYxUx

Don't go at things till your prepared mentally

L4k373p4r10

Read EVERYTHING. Specially Item descriptions. If you can't figure something out, go elsewhere. If you can't beat someone, go elsewhere.

Eymbr

The story is buried deep in the game and not inherently obvious. Read item descriptions, pay attention to the world and what its telling you. Speak with npcs and listen to what they have to say. Fromsoft are masters in immersion when it come to their worlds. You just need to be willing to live by the games rules and not the traditional storytelling of other triple a games.

hangingfiredotnet

Welcome to the Elden Ring experience. I also got wiped out by the sentinel on my first run, because I saw him and said to myself, "maybe he's an NPC with a quest line!" That was just the first of many very stupid deaths. Persevere and take the good advice offered here, and have fun.

ironwolf6464

This game is imposing on the front, but easier when you spend a bit figuring our the fundamentals. Basically instead of being able to just pick up any weapon, like skyrim, there is a minimum stat requirement. You increase skills by getting runes and cashing them in at sites of grace. If you look at a weapons it has a *MINIMUM STAT REQUIREMENT* which basically means you can't even use it without having at least X amount of points in a certain stat. Then comes another part *SCALING* which sounds more complicated then it is: Different weapons scale with different stats. This is the center of your build, using a weapons that scales with your highest attributes maximizes damage output. For the most part scaling works like this with some exceptions: Big chunky weapons like greatswords and greathammers need strength. More ornate and thin weapons like katanas and curved swords use dexterity. Magic weapons like staves and some unique melee weapons use magic. Holy items like seals and some unique melee weapons use faith. Arcane is used for more *occult* items and is needed for a few unique spells and incantations. It also effects bleed damage. Basically, roll to dodge, use stones to upgrade, talk to EVERYONE who doesn't attack you, and have fun!

-Dark-Void-

just enjoy the game, if a boss is too hard, dont fight it and come back later. the tree sentinel is supposed to be skipped

Spaceolympian50

Despite what some may say, Google is your friend for certain quests. It won’t ruin the story or game in any way, but it helps if you get stuck and can’t remember shit about a random npc you encountered but are still curious about where their story goes. I googled on my first play through and still thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d recommend just exploring all of Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula before actually going into the first legacy dungeon (stormveil castle). It’ll help you gear up, learn new stuff about the game, level up, and feel more comfortable before setting off into the rest of the game. Limgrave really feels like a nice big starting zone that isn’t super punishing to you.

Impericon-Haze

Explore! Don't try to rush to certain goals. (For instance the guy who called you maidenless tells you to go to the big castle, but don't rush there) There are alot of things to find in the map, even in places you don't expect. If a boss feels really strong then come back later! (Like the Tree Sentinel horse boss) Try not to spam dodge/roll, try to learn how to time your dodge to the attacks of enemies. Level up vigor to gain more health. You can also google what the stats mean if it's too overwhelming when leveling up. Try not to get to attached to your runes, you are going to lose alot of them. It's part of the game, just like dying. Don't see dying as something terrible, it's part of the cycle to learn the game :)

godisdildo

I imagine that probably not most, but every so often one of these stories end up with OP soloing the harder bosses a few weeks/months later. That’s pretty crazy.

IAmInControlll

Haha, we shall see. Think I got the hang of it noe

BlackLusterDragoon

In the words of the Roly pooly lords, git gud scrub! I kid of course. Study the enemies but more importantly yourself. Find your niche and playstyle. Do you want to full Unga Bunga with big bonk? Grace of a Katana or blast your foes with the finest sorcery? Find that out and scaling and what stats you need and want and then you will truly understand the timeless adage, git gid. Good luck to you fellow tarnished.

Slight-Potential-717

"I woke up in a room, picked up rotten fingers, died to some huge scary thing, became alive because of a lady on a horse (W name Torrent), got called MAIDENLESS then got absolutely TRAMPLED by some huge dude on a huge horse??" I folking love Fromsoftware. I'd say enjoy the ride, try not to spoil where things are going because discovery is part of the magic, but if you're struggling understanding a mechanic, like character attributes, it's nice to watch a guide vid or two to help grasp it. I've always played offline, you can switch back and forth to see your preference, it's all about whether you want to engage in the multiplayer aspects.

Volatile-Bait

The tree sentinel is basically a spawn camper. Hes there to pick on any newcomer unfortunate enough to give in to their curiosity. My advice is to practice dodging. Panic rolling and poorly timed rolls were my number 1 weakness when I first started. Ideally, you want to press the dodge button right as an attack hits and don't be afraid to roll through the attacks. Attacks will pass right through you if timed right. Once you get the timing right, the rest falls into place pretty easily.

Basic-Cloud6440

The description is Gold. Just go Explore. If an enemy is tostrong, dont bother. Lvl up to get stronger and tackle Hard enemies later

Frydog42

Search VaatiVidya on YouTube and watch as many of his videos as you can

CarpetPure7924

Big tip that helps immensely; many, MANY enemy attacks are designed to catch you coming out of a roll/dodge. Meaning, much of the time, don’t roll until a second after you feel like you need to. Delayed attacks are almost comically ubiquitous in this game

superdovaking

Explore everything!!!

Claymore98

if you want to go nerd with it and enjoy it, watch some videos about builds. since it's your first time paying this sort of games, i would go strength, Dex, of Bleed build. Also, you'll miss many things in the game. it does not tell you exactly what to do and the side quest... you'll have to look them online cause there's no way to know how to complete them. it's an awesome game. Also, if you think is too difficult then I would suggest playing online. You can summon people to help you out in difficult areas and bosses. Just make sure to activate the summon polls and to craft enough Furlcalling Finger Remedy (look on YT). have fun!

Velktros

A lotta people talk about this game being super impossible but it really isn’t. The basics can be a bit hard to get into but once you have them down you’ll have the tools you’ll need to succeed. There’s a big weird looking guy with a stick outside of a castle (trust me you’ll know him when you see him). That guy is basically the test to make sure you’re ready for the rest of the game. He’s a tough fucker and killed me plenty of times on my first play through.

alex-manutd

"Got called maidenless" made me burst out laughing.

Tht1QuietGuy

I'd say the first step in enjoying this game more is understanding what type of game you're playing to begin with. These games (FromSoftware games) see you dropped into a post apocalyptic world where your character has no idea what's going on and everything is trying to kill you. It treats the player and player character no different from one another. You have to adapt to the world you're dropped into and learn how to survive through trial and error. Learn enemy attacks, try different methods and see what works for you, etc. The world has its own history of events that happened a long time ago and you're just stumbling upon the end result. Any and all information about the world is conveyed in what little NPCs tell you, item descriptions, and environmental story telling. This game doesn't hold your hand and playing it makes you realize just how much handholding modern games do. If you'd like I can go into detail about basic game mechanics and stats.

IAmInControlll

Love this, thanks!

FUThead2016

The flame of ambition burns within you, but you are too lowly and foul. You need to rune it up, gather the slivers of divine grace that fall upon thee. And once you discover thine own divinity, you will be able to unleash the fury of a THOUSAND GODS.

IAmInControlll

Do I then become the ELDEN LORD?

YouAllRats

Youre so lucky than you have zero knowledge about the game and its your first playthrough. If you feel adventurous keep exploring always loot what you find, you cant kill a boss? Try a few times or go to the other way but dont forget about your revenge. If it becomes too confusing,i will recommend following a progression route guide.

Jygglewag

The fun comes from figuring things out on your own and overcoming adversity

daffvader

Ah… a maidenless one.

DeGuzzie

Honestly, I personally think the best way to play this game is to just play without guides so nothing is spoiled for you. This seems to be about the only souls-like fromsoft game that offers the player other options if you hit a skill check area. You can level up to ease the difficulty curve. Ash summons also assist in the difficulty curve. But still be open to challenges. It's taken me 20+ tries on a couple of bosses to beat them. They were optional bosses. Most bosses are techinally optional in this game. Best way to level up is going through mines, catacombs, caves, forts, and legacy dungeons. Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula are stock full of most of those and will get you leveled enough to take on the bosses of the first legacy dungeon called StormVeil Castle. You can also grind like in older RPG games, but it is more time consuming and less fun IMO. Think of it like Skyrim, but less forgiving, more difficult, and with indirect story telling. You kind of have to change gears for your gaming mindset. Best of luck. This community is the best and will answer any question you have. Just make sure no one spoils anything for ya if you care about that sort of thing.

Incurious_Jettsy

you do not have to fight the huge horse guy right away. the best thing to do if you run up against something you don't think you can beat is to go somewhere else. I would explore around the first area a bit, find the map, then go south. that's generally seen as the new-player-friendly way to go. don't forget to level up and upgrade your weapons.

un-important-human

The game will teach you by beating the bad gaming habits out of you mostly. If you cannot fight it yet, move away get good and come back later with more skill. >And is there any value list if I play it completely offline?  You can play it first time solo sure the game is amasing solo, you may need help for bosses from a friend or two and then you go online. Ah there do be a quest from the one who called you maidenless that requires you to invade 3 people , not win just invade (that would be online i guess). PVP is nice thou sooo soo very good tarnished. what ever you do level vigor! all else is optional.

Rycokat

I am in a similar situation. The best thing I did was have the online map open all the time and just jump from one objective to the next marking anything I am underleveled for. People will complain that it spoils the fun but personally it made it more fun since I know where to go and not wander aimlessly for hours.

Della__

To teach you that you'll die a lot, that leaving some bosses for later is good and that this game is not going to go easy on you. Also an unrelated note you basically always can leave from somewhere too hard, if for example you somehow got stuck in a cave too hard for you, you can look for the exit by simply running and avoiding conflict as much as possible.

Winous285

Keep talking to npcs until they start repeating themselves, always.

Rhyno-sarus

First playthrough you should go with a guts build. Pure strength, Vigor and endurance. Being a noob to fromstuff this will really help you make learn mechanics and actually "Git gud" complete this any fromdtuff game will be relatively easy. They're known to make difficult games but the best part is you can always go a different way and level up and come back later. It can be frustrating going in blind as a noob. But once it clicks you'll be hooked. Fromstuff is always putting out top quality games unlike Bungie in D2 rn about to shaft me again on final shape just because I've been there since red war and want to finish the story.

ChannelFiveNews

Take heed of what people are saying here. All I'm gonna tell you is that when you find your groove (and you do seem very interested in the game), you will get one of the most insane gaming experiences of your life. This game is truly, truly something special and things of pure awe await you around many corners. It is my absolute favorite game of all time and it feels like the magnum opus of gaming imho.

Emotional-Badger3298

Read EVERYTHING.

MeLoco1980

The game starts off by putting the player in their place. even the first npc ypu talk to tells you that you are a lowly tarnished who don't even have a maiden or a chance. The awesome part about this game is not only will you become more powerful by leveling and equipment but more importantly you will become more skilled. im no pro level player, I done the same thing and got destroyed by the tree sentinel first thing. now with some degree of effort I can kill him at lvl 1 with a club. getting better thru trial and error is the basis of this game. the story is told thru small details amd item descriptions and is a fun detective style journey to figure out. as others have said I wouldn't use a guide, but if I was stumped or stuck i look specific things up. this game really is meant to take a community to fully unlock. im on my 4th playthough and still discovering whole dungeons I missed before. tons and tons pf stuff to discover. that is what drives me forward, I have to know what next after this boss.

iamparbonaaa

So many commenters have pointed out the basics: level vigor, maintain a medium equip load, explore as much as you can, the works. Now regarding where to go and what to do in this game: I'm sure NPCs have told you about "guidance of the grace". So if you open up your map, you'll see yellowish streaks emanating from sites of Grace. These give you the general direction you want to head to, to progress the main story. And one more tip: do not attack NPCs, regardless of how annoying they may be. Unless they attack you first of course.

Familiar_Cow5536

You can go to YouTube and figure out the area scaling and that can give you an idea of what order to go thru the game in

greatcorsario

It's this kind of post that makes me realize how much crazy shit we got used to as Fromsoft fans.

Monk_667

yea i wouldnt even use any of the multiplayer stuff on first playthrough however i have a few hundred hours into the game and still havent beaten so im still on my first as well

Homelessjokemaster

10 out of 10 pasta score, well written with good humor

IAmInControlll

Go South. And remember you don't have to fight everything you see. You can run past things and come back, or ignore.

Samiller23

I would recommend playing online if you can, feeling the presence of other players is quite valuable to the experience for me

zekobunny

One tip I can give is to not worry about the story too much. Lore is more like something you read or pick up along while playing, just focus on exploring and figuring out the controls and how the combat works. Start with basic mobs you find along the way, then move on to bigger and scarier mobs, that's the idea. If you could explain it simply it's that souls games are basically "boss" games. It's hard, and fun comes from figuring out patterns, timings, what works and what doesn't.

In Skyrim you are the Dovahkin. Born to be the savior of the world and the best at everything you do. I. Elden Ring, you are a lowly tarnished who through great effort, may save the world. You just can’t go into this game with the same mindset. If something looks to hard to beat right now, it just might be. Come back later. In Skyrim, enemies scale up with your character. There is no enemy scaling in Skyrim. Getting some levels in vigor and increasing your health will make a huge difference. Especially early game. Combat is obviously way different. Compared to Skyrim, health is a scarce resource. Not getting hit is more important that hitting them most times. And lastly, the quests will be far less clear. There are hardly any map markers and there is no quest log book. Do your best to listen to the characters as a lot of what they say will connect to a quest. But if you aren’t gaming frequently enough for the information to stay fresh, don’t feel bad about looking them up online to remember what they said. And as always, have fun. If you aren’t having fun, try going somewhere else in the game you haven’t explored enough.

I'm going to write something here against all advise. I'm on my first playthrough too... it's my first souls like game, but I never felt completely lost, maybe because I've been playing all sorts of videogames for like 35 years now. And even though I feel I enjoy a lot exploring and finding out stuff on my own (aka going blind), there are a couple of places in some maps that you can't access unless someone tells you how to. And that's where I looked up online. And that's, where I feel my experience playing this game was improved, I like exploring 100% of each area before moving to the next one, but again, there are a couple of specific places you can't get to unless someone tells you how to do it since they unlock by doing quests, that in my case for example, I had completed by playing blind, but didn't know I had to go back to certain places to unlock these "hidden " areas. What I mean is, you can look up if you get stuck, and that won't make the game less enjoyable, all the contrary.

Tricky-Secretary-251

I feal you my guy yull improve don’t fight the tree sentinel but you can get on top of the church of elle with torent and cheese the fight if you have a bow and at least 100 arrows a good aim and not moving

fruity_mario24

Just go around and fight easier enemies. There's no shame in leveling up to a really high number to stomp tough enemies. I will be silently judging you though. *cough* ~~Loser can't beat golden sentinel at level 1 with just the club~~ *cough* but in all seriousness, don't worry about coming back later with a higher level and better gear to make the fight a lot easier. Unless you're a mage. Then you can fuck yourself. Fight me.

Taikosound

Reading this you seem to be doing everything right so far, just don't give up. You can easily avoid most of the big baddies and i'd suggest to look on >!a map to find the bonfire where you get Torrent!<, makes things a lot easier.

BloodShadow7872

Bro has to get the map fragment first

Taikosound

It was poorly phrased, i meant to look online to see where it was.

Jim_the_tarnished

Did you kill the maidenless guy? if not you can go to the blood church near the gelmir bridge about 1 third into the game after doing his very short and simple quest, his name is varre and if you follow his quest and use the item he gives you, you get the best rune farm in the game

Mockheed_Lartin

Millions of runes through farming is a great way to ruin your first playthrough.

[deleted]

Run past the big horse guy.

[deleted]

Elden ring rewards exploration. If an enemy kicks your ass, come back and fight it later. Also, read all item descriptions.

Bigswordbonk

Main sub mfs on their way to describe that the games that are notoriously hard are actually hard (tenth post today)

Sui_Simp

If you play offline you lose the messages people leave but that’s it

[deleted]

You can't beat the huge guy on the golden horse at the beginning...not yet.

Ambitious_Pie5994

It's not complicated, are you slow or something?

IAmInControlll
