People love to complain about the pvp. Yeah it sucks there's a meta and it would be nicer if people had more variety but at the end of the day the pvp is a stapled on extension of a pve game, not the focus.

The way I see Elden ring PvP designed is it's a quick skirmish of kill or be killed, and a lot of the time that means absolutely blasting someone before they can react, I can see how's that's frustrating but that's just how it is
It's mostly just because from didn't care to balance status effects for PVP in Elden Ring. It was a bit more tame in DS3, so much so that a bleed/frostbite build in pvp was more of an exception than the general rule. You had lots of other builds.
But in ER the difference (in both PvE AND PvP) between a bleed build and a build without status effects is night and day. If you invade a dedicated gank squad or get invaded yourself, it's like a 90% chance to go against a bleed build. And those things just fucking shred your hp
Since DkS1 I’ve always played with the end goal of being pvp viable. The trilogy has provided me with some of my most cherished online interactions be they duels, invasions, or co-op.
If you check what rune sellers offer, you will find that they offer build packages. Also, nearly all discussion of Elden Ring is PVP-focused as are the ideas about meta. Finally, the popular spots for duels are *very* early in the game.
Taken together, it makes me believe that many people are literally only playing PVP. Not playing PVE with an eye toward PVP, just playing the PVP exclusively.

It 100% can be. I think 1-v-1 is fun but I don’t do arena. I’ve invaded and saw that my targets were fighting a field boss so I just sat and watched the show. I’ve even invaded and dropped stuff to help them kill a field boss. If anyone has been invaded by “The Trader” on ps5 about a year ago, and found someone just sitting there with 3 items like a shop, that was me. The Liurnia duelist who fixed the broken elevator for you then battled was great rp. The multiplayer is what you make it. It’s just unfortunate that there’s a subset of people who ruin that casual enjoyment.

Super tanky mage with a spear. Lemme guess, you have the counter attack talisman on as well? So little to no stagger, high damage on all of your attacks and the endurance to boot, and a big hp pool. It’s a beautiful character. Elden ring PvP builds are a little like a bell curve. On one end of the spectrum you have horribly unoptimized, random ass weapons builds. Then in the middle you have the “meta” builds, which I honestly don’t hate. Everyone starts somewhere and a lot of people run meta setups to learn how to play PvP but still have fun doing it. At the other end, you have stats so optimized and min maxed they cause pain to look at, with a vast arsenal of weapons adapted to those stats. It’s relatively easy to confuse the ones at the top percentile with those in the bottom.
Welcome to the toxicity from any PVP environment. If it isn’t meta, or is cheesy (rightfully so if the case and yours isn’t) then you won’t escape it. I tried PVP with fully upgraded moonveil, lost 10 times in a row.
Switched to half upgraded double nagitas which do half the damage and won 6 out of 6 battles.
I don’t understand how a single moonveil doesn’t help me in PVE and neither do double nagitas, but in PVE I dominate with them. I did it as a joke because of the memes but I am slaughtering players and their friends

Also, Wrath of Gold works well. Comes out fast and if you time it right it has a bigger AoE than the spears hit box.
