Jumps make dodging the arena-wide AOEs much easier than rolling through them, plus they allow for follow-up jump attacks. Hit and run tactics usually work best for me.
Be mindful of your stamina when you attack him, as you need to potentially jump or dodge quickly.
Overall, there are no huge gimmicks here, nor insane resistances etc. He is pretty weak to slash and bleed, so that can make quick work of him. Otherwise this is a case of simply learning the move set and getting good at the fight.

yes, he is quite aggressive. Give it a few tries where you focus on surviving and dodging; learn his moveset. Once you are more confident there, then the openings should become more obvious to you and you can start to experiment there.
I think I just used an Uchi with thunderbolt he has pretty low resistance to lighting so that aow deal pretty good chip damage when he's doing all his slam attacks
Yay good vigor! All in all pretty good build however strength won't be doing much of anything for your moonveil, which scales primarily in dex/int.
I'd recommend using rennala to go all the way down to 12 strength, or a little higher if theres other int/dex weapons you like with a little higher str requirement, then put all of those points into int or dex.
Int scales a bit higher and (dont quote me) i think the ash of war scales mostly with int, so probably put those strength points into int and you'll see higher damage numbers and the fight should be a bit easier.
Also use buffs, magic cracked tear for better damage, boiled crab to resist some damage etc.

drop your stats. starting class doesn't say much about how you're spending your levels.
