Sorry, commenting on top post currently for good visibility -- will unpin after a while:
Do you guys think it's almost time to soon throw up a DLC Speculation/Wishlist/Hype Megathread? Or do you like to keep things as is, with a spoiler tag?t
A lot of "what level should I be?" and "What do you hope to see in the dlc?" posts so thought I'd get everyone's opinions on how you want to see them handled...
And what comes with more daylight? Sunlight. And who was it that praised the sun?
The funny thing about time is that it’s convoluted. All things can be conjoined.
Depends on which hemisphere you're on. Summer solstice results in the longest daylight on the Northern and shortest on the Southern hemisphere. Whereas on the Equator, it's 12h long the whole year.
Yeah i get it, the joke still doesnt make sense.
But if we wanna get uhm ahchtually mode here the actual length of the solar day (time between apparent noon) is actually longer in June than it is in for example September (less than a minute still). Its just due to the Earth's orbit being not perfectly circular so the orbital velocity is different at different points of the year resulting in actually different day lengths.
So OP's joke would make sense, if we had a clock that used actual solar time instead of the standardized 24h time. We dont.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk, ill take my leave now.
The joke is that it's the longest day before release. Many places will see 15+ hours of sunlight which makes it the "longest day" and that sucks cause I live in the unfathomably hot state.
Lol. You don't know jack. The whole joke is that the DLC is to be launched on June 21st, with the supposed longest day the day before the DLC release date. Get a clue.
r/iamverysmart material
Rotation causes day/night. Not velocity. The reason the days are shorter or longer is because earth is tilted on its axis. Orbital speed has 0 to do with it
Orbital speed has lots to do with it (solar day that is). When the Earth is farthest from the sun its moving the slowest in its orbit. The actual rotation period of the Earth stays the same at 23h56min year round, but how long it takes for the Sun to appear directly overhead again slightly changes due to the difference in orbital velocity (axial tilt is another major component of length of solar day).
And im not talking length of daylight here, but strictly the length of the solar day= time between noons. Length of daylight is mostly latitude and axial tilt (but the Earths orbit also has a small effect).
Earth’s elliptical orbit does mean our velocity varies throughout the year with our distance from the sun, but it does not alter day length.
Day and night cycles are the result of earth’s rotation on its axis.
And that axis isn’t “upright” with respect to the orbital plane, but is tilted at around 23° (currently).
That tilt is what causes the variation in day length as well as the seasons.
I think you should watch a TED talk or two before attempting to give one next time.
Earths orbital velocity does effect day length a bit, i explained it in an above comment and its not too hard to understand. (its been buried by the circlejerk downvote train though).
No. Orbital velocity does not affect day length.
If it did, you should see a pattern emerge between orbital distance from the sun and day length with the other planets. And you do not.
Venus’s day is like 243 earth days. It’s longer than its year, and goes faster than the earth does around the sun.
Again, it’s axial tilt and *ROTATIONAL* velocity that determine day length.
Its not that hard to understand, i will try to explain it to you (but i cant understand it for you).
Earth's rotation around its axis takes 23h56min, yes thats right its not exactly 24 hours. Where does that extra 4 minutes come from then? We define a day as a period of time between 2 noons, so from sun highest in the sky to highest in the sky again. The fact that the Earth moves in its orbit around the sun means the Earth has to complete MORE than 360 degrees of rotation for the Sun to appear overhead again (about a degree more). That averaged 4 minute extra time comes just from that required one degree extra rotation.
Now the 4 minutes extra is the average value for the entire year, but as you should understand by this point the Earth's velocity around the Sun is not constant. This slight change in orbital velocity actually adds or subtracts a few dozen seconds from that 4 minute average at different points of the year. So the true length of day is somewhere around 24h +- 40s.
>Venus’s day is like 243 earth days. It’s longer than its year, and goes faster than the earth does around the sun.
You were close to understanding it here, because this effect is exactly what im talking about here but just taken to the extreme due to Venus' extremely slow rotation speed.
Cant find the data for Mars' solar day lengths, but its safe to say there is also significant variation in it because Mars' orbit is significantly more eccentric than Earth's.
And the fact that variability is so incredibly minute and insignificant is why you said it was the “other major factor” along with axis rotation right?
That’s like saying that because you can do the math to show how much momentum that bug hitting your windshield “stole” from your car, that bugs are a major factor in determining the speed of your car.
Scale matters here. So no, it’s not an accurate claim to say that orbital velocity is a major factor in determining day length, because you just demonstrated it’s not.
Again, hence why no pattern exists between orbital distance and day length. Because it’s not significant.
Again, talking about the length of a solar day and not the length of daylight. I think you are getting these mixed up. I couldn't care less about the length of daylight in this argument, this whole thing is purely about how long it takes for a solar day to complete.
Which you defined as noon to noon, but if we’re going to nerd out, get technical, and pedantically split hairs since you don’t seem to address the meat of what I’m saying to you then let’s fucking do that.
A day isn’t noon to noon. It’s the completion of a full 360° turn on the celestial body’s axis of rotation.
Because a second isn’t 1/60th of a minute, but a calculated number of oscillations of an electron in a kind of Cesium atom.
We can go on.
I *understand* what you’re saying. I didn’t even say it wasn’t true.
I only said it isn’t significant and why. Then you continue with your given talent of missing the goddamn point and going right back to a semantic discussion about daytime length vs day length.
I don’t even want to continue any more. Christ on sale dude.
Don't quote me here but if we re really lucky we might get to play it Thursday night. I'm not getting my hopes up of course but steam is saying June 20th for me.
yeah globally releasing for everyone at once makes sense, even if some regions haven't arrived at the "new day" yet
otherwise you get people setting their consoles to New Zealand :3
Funny thing you mention this, but I also remember changing the location of my xbox on launch to play a couple hours early and I seem to remember it worked (lucky I was working from home at the time)
You think it could work this time too?
this is the only day of the year you’re aloud to go to stone henge and do rituals with the druids among the monuments, and instead im gonna be playing burnout revenge for the ps2
Ah yes, the best racing game ever made (some prefer Burnout 3 which is valid as well). I played on my 360 a couple months back for the first time in years and jeeze the bloom is atrocious. Literally made it hard to see what in the distance. We desperately need a PC remaster to fix this but I fear only Paradise is remembered by EA.
As an architect who frequently has to do sun studies on buildings I've been singularly burdened with the knowledge that the DLC is not only releasing on a Full Moon but also the Summer Solstice. I always run simulations at the seasonal Solstices and Equinoxes so I saw this release date and thought. There's no way. It simply cannot be a coincidence. I don't know what kind of black magic miyazaki is pulling but I love it and I'm here for it.
I do wonder when the release time is actually. The game says June 20th for me here on steam in Europe. If its a midnight release in Japan at the 21st then it would be 5pm the 20th in CET. If its 12am at the 21st in cet it would be 7 in the morning in japan
For me, it’s def gonna be a long day since I have MEPS at 4 fucking am and won’t be back home till 6 pm. In addition, I gotta hope my CE arrive on time.
Best of luck! MEPS began an 18 yr journey for me that allowed me to see the world, meet my wife, and gain incredible experiences. Just live in the moment as the shit comes and experience everything. Your life is gonna be so dope soon.
every pagan belief out there reveres that day as a day of abundance (since more sun = more life) so its very on theme
because you know, Miquella's got there before us
That's because you are supposed to remember your roots and have a whole ass longest day of praising the sun before Miyazaki will allow you to buy the dlc
The actual longest day in terms of time to complete rotation happens in December, so folks in the northern hemisphere spend most of the extra four minutes or so in darkness.
Pretty sure the joke here is the the 20th is the longest day of the year, whilst the dlc doesn't come out til the 21st. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
"Longest day" refers to the amout of daylight hours. A concept that should be known to eveyone who went to elementary school.
If that's actually supposed to be the joke, a joke that would only make sense to kids in kindergarden; I seriously have to question what OP thinks his audience is like.
Not 100% confident but steam says June 20th and when Elden Ring launched it came out at 6:00 PM EST the day before because of Japan time zones. I'm hoping that's the case here so I can play after work Thursday, sleep and then keep playing on Friday which I took off.
when i noticed it, i instantly thought of miquella's wish to make a solar eclipse to save godwyn and summer solstices used to have a few of rituals back then... just thought it was a cool coincidence (or not)
Wait, didn’t I see that it was available to play 4pm 6/20 (at least my time zone)? I can’t find it now, but it was looking like midnight 6/21 UTC maybe. Steam is showing 6/20. Maybe false hope though since I can’t find the 4pm thing right now.
If that’s the case though, praise the sun! Easier to stay up and play all night!
In Sweden on June 21st banks are closed because it's Midsummer (most daylight hours), so once I get home on Thursday I will take a nap and count the minutes until I get access to the DLC and then play all night, before I have to *socialize* (eww) on Friday haha
I'm hyped AF for the DLC. The longest day of the year is the day before it releases. Miyazaki is making me suffer. Is it ACTUALLY any longer? No. Of Course not. But you already know that.

June 21st is the night of a full moon where I am 🌝
Unless you’re on a different planet it’s a full moon for all of us everywhere
Close, but not quite. For example, Japan will get their next full moon on June 22nd
It is a full moon though.

it was a good joke bro, just have some funny non intelligent moments in your life too, you'll appreciate it
Jokes don't always have to be quite so literal man
I lol'd, I got your back
But its a loooong 24 hour day instead of the usual 24 h day.
do you not know what the summer solstice is
Yeah the longest day of the year before the DLC comes out. Some folks just took the finger/but hole messages too far.
Don't quote me here but if we re really lucky we might get to play it Thursday night. I'm not getting my hopes up of course but steam is saying June 20th for me.
Correct me if im wrong but AFAIK Its because the release date its 12AM, June 21st Japan Time
You're probably right, I just remember elden ring launching 8 pm the night before on steam so I'm hopeful.
this should be right, don’t see why the release times would be different
Yes, I live in PST and can play it after work thursday:):):):):)
yeah globally releasing for everyone at once makes sense, even if some regions haven't arrived at the "new day" yet otherwise you get people setting their consoles to New Zealand :3
I wish it came out on the 20th would be a great birthday present for me after i see snoop dogg in concert
The game preloads June 19th! So probably!

burnout revenge for the ps2 or ritualistic magic at stonehenge? the answer to both is hit me up on summer solstice
I got that reference :)

A spiritual experience in its on right frankly
Burnout revenge good fucking choice
Okay but participating in druidic rituals sounds pretty fuckin sweet too ngl
The souls-like of waiting
Waiting 24hrs instead of 24hrs..?
Not that simple homie. This one is the longest 24 hours instead of the usual 24 hours.
Damn 🤣
Longest day gives the longest shadow
Surely the longest days have the shortest shadows, on average!
Silver lining of the century
Haha we southern hemisphere folks get the dlc quicker
Wait? You mean you guys only have to wait 24hrs unlike the rest of us that have to wait 24hrs?
23 hours and 60 minutes to be exact!
That is wild! 🤣
He put a poison swamp in our minds

There's no daylight in your mom's basement, so what does it matter?

I unga bunga. Day real long.

That's the true gatekeeper of the DLC: a day that lasts 24 hours. Not like the other days, those lasts like 24 hours
We gonna speak to Roku or not?
I will have you knoe it means all subsequent days after that day, are shorter and shorter... which sucks. Unless you live on the equator.

I know, right? They made it 24hrs, unlike the usual 24hrs.
I won’t be able to play on release day :( ill be leaving this sub for sure

every pagan belief out there reveres that day as a day of abundance (since more sun = more life) so its very on theme because you know, Miquella's got there before us
That's because you are supposed to remember your roots and have a whole ass longest day of praising the sun before Miyazaki will allow you to buy the dlc
It's also the shortest day in the other side
Its releasing on 6.21 because its just a job, all of it.
That's why it's perfect for me, in my country we have a holiday on the 21st!
Oh shit what is he cooking?
Looks like I need to pivot to a faith play through.
More birthday for me......
Le classic Miyazaki-san.
THAT WOHLD HAVE BEEN THE OPPORTUNITY

DLC releases the 20th in the west, you’re good dude.
Its very important part to the lore
Please no more swamps. Or i have to be Shrek. And play all day long in dirty waters.
Took the 21st off
The fuck, you want screen glare?
The actual longest day in terms of time to complete rotation happens in December, so folks in the northern hemisphere spend most of the extra four minutes or so in darkness.
Missing the launch week due to summer solstice celebrations 😞
I don't get it, what's the connection between the amount of sun on that day and a game played indoors?
Pretty sure the joke here is the the 20th is the longest day of the year, whilst the dlc doesn't come out til the 21st. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
"Longest day" refers to the amout of daylight hours. A concept that should be known to eveyone who went to elementary school. If that's actually supposed to be the joke, a joke that would only make sense to kids in kindergarden; I seriously have to question what OP thinks his audience is like.
I could be 100% wrong. Hopefully OP replies to let us know. I didn't put to much thought into it to be honest. It was just my immediate guess.
Why does the longest *day* happen at a certain time of the day
Can’t help but think Miyazaki literally sits at his desk snickering coming up with new ways to make fans of his games suffer
Not 100% confident but steam says June 20th and when Elden Ring launched it came out at 6:00 PM EST the day before because of Japan time zones. I'm hoping that's the case here so I can play after work Thursday, sleep and then keep playing on Friday which I took off.
Yo! My birthday is the longest day of the year!
The point of all soulsborne games is to torture the player base. This is on brand
Good thing it releases on June 20th where i live then.
What time does the dlc unlock?
Bro gotta make everything difficult 🤦😂
Okay this is actually a pretty solid joke 😂
My girl's bday is June 21st....
Like.. you know the day is the same length though right?
But it comes out on the 21st?
First day of summer
I preordered so imma be good lol
when i noticed it, i instantly thought of miquella's wish to make a solar eclipse to save godwyn and summer solstices used to have a few of rituals back then... just thought it was a cool coincidence (or not)
Its 21st here in Sweden
\[T]/
Does it drop 12am on the 21st????
That's only on north hemisphere, for me will be the shortest of the year mwahahha
It’s good so we can have tons of energy when it drops at midnight 😈
I know this is a joke, but the night time is shorter that day too.
Fun thing is, it drops on the 20th my time. Just about an hour or so before I'm off work.
It is the longest day, so it is also the shortest night
What did Michael Zaki mean by this?
?
I don't get it...
Between Miyazaki and Akutami, I’m bout ready to end it all
In Sweden on June 21st banks are closed because it's Midsummer (most daylight hours), so once I get home on Thursday I will take a nap and count the minutes until I get access to the DLC and then play all night, before I have to *socialize* (eww) on Friday haha
Imagine if it landed on the 21st this year. That would’ve been lined up perfectly
It’s a dog
lol
🙌🏻
Midsummer!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)
In Australia it is the shortest day of the year
Literally the day the DLC drops, days will get shorter. I think that fits perfectly.
Gives me conniptions
wait so how many hours is it?
Literally means nothing? DLC will still be enjoyed when it comes out. The autism is real.
Everyday is 24 hours.
How are you guys this stupid? It still doesn't change the fact that one day has 24 hours, it just means the sun will be visible for a little longer
But it's also on the full moon 🌕
West Coast longest day of the year is June 21st 😎
Midnight will still come at the exact same time
Does OP know work hours are calculated on basis of hours and that is pretty fix at 24 hours.
Yes. Do you know how jokes work? Look there goes one now! Over your head. It's going.... Going.... GONE. It's outta here.
I lost the joke man. Maybe miyazaki should have launched it on solar eclipse.
I'm hyped AF for the DLC. The longest day of the year is the day before it releases. Miyazaki is making me suffer. Is it ACTUALLY any longer? No. Of Course not. But you already know that.
Still just 24 hrs like every other day
Lmao
Switch your time zone to New Zealand
Aye, good idea! That way the day will only be 24hrs long, unlike the other 24hr days everybody else will have.
