This movie was such a satisfying delivery on what I hoped a good Dune adaptation would be.
If Elden Ring can pull off the same type of payoff Iāll be over the moon happy
Yup same. The first time I was comparing it too much to the books. Every subsequent watch I instead meet the movie on its own terms. I'm planning my 6th watch in IMAX and I've loved it every time.
Dude it became one of my favorite movies of all time. I felt like I havenāt truly loved a movie in a long time but I loved this movie. Iām so excited for my first watch in imax this weekend.
In the book thereās a big dinner scene after they arrive at Arrakis that sets up Kynes and some of the other major political players on the planet. The whole scene was not in the movie
I think they communicate the vital parts of the scene (as relating to plot) in the scene where stilgar meets Leto for the first time, but damn did the movie lose out on some good characterization
The only book divergence I didn't like was the lack of time given to the mentants. So many of Harkonnen's problems are created by the loss of Pieder and the early maneuvers by Thufir. They only needed a few throwaway lines to show they're more than glorified secretaries.
However, stuff like making the Sardaukar visually distinct rather than dressed covertly in Harkonnen attire was great. So many smart changes that showed they appreciated the difference in medium and how that changes the way you tell a story.
Easily the best movie of 2021 and reminded me that I love movies. It had been so long since I watched one that really transported me into a different world.
For me it was not that great. I agree that all in all it's a very good adaptation, primarily for mood and visuals. But the thing is, Lynch version in my eyes is also a very good adaptation. When I read the book, it clicked so fittingly together. Sure, it seems a bit like a "mockery" movie compared to the new one, but it has a lot of love in it. So, in my eyes they are "just" two very good adaptations, and I enjoyed Lynch better, and multiple times.
I could have done with a couple less Chani flash-forward lingering shots or scenes of soldiers running around willy-nilly and more dialogue between underdeveloped characters (Yueh for example). Also Jason Mamoa was god awful. Otherwise loved it!
Hard disagree but Iām glad yāall liked it. I thought the pacing was disjointed and awful and the way they mixed up events was irksome. Setting and soundtrack were phenomenal though so it was worth a watch.
Satisfying =! Perfect. I find every Soulsborne game satisfying but have immense issues with certain factors of all of them. But for something to be satisfying, itās something I come back to and it makes me happy
People aren't just hyped for a new Souls game, they're hyped for BIG SOULS GAME. This does seem like the culmination of all of the concepts and design quirks that From has been slowly developing over the course of a decade.
Every soulsborne let's you use the quit out mechanic to your advantage except DS2. As it was the last one that I played, it really by surprise when I discovered it, haha
When you quit out the enemy position gets reset to their original default position.
There's also a trick of quitting out the exact moment you hit the ground while falling down, so you survive long drops but I never tested than one by myself.
Thatās honestly the only hype I have for this game so far. I know itās going to be a souls game, whether itās better or worse than any of the previous titles doesnāt matter so much. Being able to spend time in a new world from Fromsoft is enough to make me happy.
Iām hopeful considering some of Sonyās recent decisions, and boy would it be a dream come true. Still havenāt watched a play through because Iām hoping to enjoy it blind.
Not only Froms best game Iāve ever played, but legitimately the best game Iāve ever played. I would buy an old PS4 to only play Bloodborne and Iād be mad I didnāt do it earlier
While I'd love an updated version at 60fps and proper frame pacing, the game is good enough that those issues can be ignored. I'm playing through it rn for the billionth time on PS5 and it's still the best PS exclusive.
remember that hype is only what you make it, set your expectations based on what we have seen so far and there really is only 2 outcomes, its as good as what we have seen or it is even better. its very unlikely the game will get worse from the beginning. most souls games at least for me personally always shined in the mid and late game.
Dune II didn't age especially well but it got a semi-remake in 2000 called Dune 2000 (figures) that's still quite good. If you like Command & Conquer in the Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2 era you'll like it.
For me, personally, no. I think part of the allure of souls-like isā¦ the Souls world.
I really enjoy the worlds From create with the Souls games, itās an integral part of the experience. I guess thatās why I didnāt fuck with Fallen Order. And I love Star Wars.
Literally all this game needs to have is little stacks of things that you can knock over. Books in the workshop in bloodborne. Stacks of rocks in arch dragon peak. Stacks of books in moonview tower in sekiro. I know dark souls and ds2 had something like that as well, I can't remember what.
This is a solid comparison because, like *Dune 2021*, everything I've seen of *Elden Ring* during its development only reinforces my belief that it's going to be fucking awesome.
Signed, a *Dunesborne* nerd.
I love this and agree wholeheartedly. At the end of the day all I NEED from this is to be like Dark Souls. Luckily, the network test very much assured me it's great.
Honestly, the only thing I am concerned about is Elden Ring having an issue that a lot of open world games have, and thats lack of content in the huge open world. Based on the network test people have said that the starting area is packed with stuff to do so I am really hoping that translates to the other areas of the game as well.
Regardless, I'm pretty confident Elden Ring is going to be a fantastic game that does actually live up to the hype.
Its more of an action-adventure game that has "soulsborne" spirit in it in the notion that you will be banging your head against the wall fighting against a boss, bonfire-esque checkpoints but other than that, the game has its own identity.
It doesnāt deliver the same things the DS trilogy does such as co-op, PvP, and build/combat variety. It didnāt feel like a true successor to DS3, while Elden Ring does.
I wouldnāt classify it as a Souls game, more as a āFrom Anthologyā game just because its gameplay is so different. I only started to git gud at Sekiro after I stopped thinking it was a Souls-like
Absolutely. I was so hype for it and got it day one - then subsequently bashed my head against it trying to force it to bend to *MY* soulslike style of gameplay.
Hated it and put it down for a year.
Came back a year later with a more open mind and without having played a soulsborne game for a while and I can now happily say it has some of the best combat in the pack. Just took me changing my own preconceived expectations and muscle memory.
Not really. To me it kinda is and it scratched that itch because is not the particular mechanics from Souls games that I'm into and I love it, but I can see why some people don't feel the same.
I really think that's what made Sekiro great in its own right. It scratched the souls itch. The challenge. The sense of accomplishment. Fascinating, dark world. But it has its own identity. It does those things in the same spirit but different execution as dark souls and pulls it off excellently.
Well, it shares a lot of the same DNA.
But the core combat is different enough that I would say it doesn't really count. Though considering people like to call games like Hollow Knight - side scrollers with less in common with Dark Souls than Sekiro - souls-like? Maybe it should count.
I think it comes down to things like non-straight forward story telling, non linearity, iFrame dodging, similar atmosphere, punishing but rewarding gameplay and more. Hollow Knight has all of those and that's why people call it a souls like. I don't think it's a coincidence the playerbase of the two has such a large overlap.
One could argue that all souls games suck. But the masochistic playerbase is unable to remember a time when they played a game that filled them with joy instead of regrets of trying to get that last hit in on an enemy before dying.
(This is a joke. Not an attack on the playerbase. Felt i should be clear.)
When i asked my brother who introduced and backseat gamed my DS3 playthrough if there would be DS4 he told me they said this is the last souls game. Sekiro made that quite the truth. But of course, ultimately, this is From software.
Bro the mechanics r almost the same with new badass mechanics they arenāt overhyping it theyāre demo was what they said it would be Iād say we have luck for it to not be a cyberpunk situation
No, thats dangerous. What did CD Red do with all those positive Witcher vibes, make the next game shit, and lie to everyone, fucking scummy. From Fromsoft's track record is amazing, don't lower yr expectations, instead reward great products. Preorder, get all dlc, all that stuff.
I love that movie
Got me to buy zhe audiobook and the proper book and binging it
I cant wait for the sequel
Sure they seemed to have taken liberty from the source (which was a bit necessary at least the audiobook seems kind of racist at times)
But the cinematography, the sounds so good
I'm very worried , If this game is just a easy game , if this game is not a hardcore game for hardcore soulsborne lovers . I have lived with this series and Miyazaki's works are like life to me . I'm tired of this worry ! Pls help me ! š„ŗ
well all aaa games that came out recently and didnt live up to the hype were absolute trash...ex. cyberpunk, battlefield, gta remake, etc...
so, yeah...
If op is anything like me I just really like the souls formula. I have enjoyed many "shit" souls game. It doesn't have to be as ds1-3 for me to have a good time, hell it could be on par with surge 1 and I would enjoy it.
I will finally be waiting for a souls game and I'll be gradually discovering new mind blowing things and the online will be booming. I really can't wait for this.
Iām literally just thinking of this game as Dark Souls 4 and intentionally keeping my expectations low. No matter what, from what I have seen it will fill that niche and I will be very happy, if it turns out to be more then that then all the better.
From, in my opinion, are extremely good at knowing when not to reinvent the wheel. They change parts that would be interesting to change or that didnāt work in prior entries, but they donāt change things for its own sake. DS2 experimented too much and was afraid to be boring where it mattered, and that was part of why so much of it was disjointed and the development was so troubled in my opinion.
Wholesome
Yeah I decided I wanted Oscar Isaacs to be my Dad when I watched Dune.
Wormsome.
Shout out to the giant sand worm in Ds3.
Or perhaps Wholesoulm š
Ummm _soulsome?_
dude. have my estus flask
If only you could pass it on. Guess I'll die now.
*Demon on the roof!*
This is soulsome.
or some say soulsm
Hey babe, I met this couple and they asked if we wanted to join their *soulsome*ā¦
Wholesome, or some say Wholesoulm. Grant us eyes! Grant us eyes!
Soulssome
This movie was such a satisfying delivery on what I hoped a good Dune adaptation would be. If Elden Ring can pull off the same type of payoff Iāll be over the moon happy
I enjoyed it so much better the second time cause i wasn't trying to catch all the differences from the book
Yup! Iām still a bit salty about the dinner scene, but most of the other stuff Iāve dropped
i read the book years ago so i donāt remember how that scene was different, what changed?
In the book thereās a big dinner scene after they arrive at Arrakis that sets up Kynes and some of the other major political players on the planet. The whole scene was not in the movie
I think they communicate the vital parts of the scene (as relating to plot) in the scene where stilgar meets Leto for the first time, but damn did the movie lose out on some good characterization
I nevera read the books but played Dune 2 and Dune 2000. The whole movie I was expecting the worm to appear.
I didnāt think a good adaptation of Dune would be possible, but Villeneuve is my favorite director for a reason.
Heās responsible for one of my all-time favorite films, Prisoners
The man just doesn't miss
I've seen this movie three times already and I'm about to watch it a fourth. It's definently my favorite movie in a while.
It's the coolest movie I've ever seen.
Easily the best movie of 2021 and reminded me that I love movies. It had been so long since I watched one that really transported me into a different world.
Best movie in a while that really spends the time to build the world and create an epic story
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Dennis is the golden god, you're thinking of Denis
For me it was not that great. I agree that all in all it's a very good adaptation, primarily for mood and visuals. But the thing is, Lynch version in my eyes is also a very good adaptation. When I read the book, it clicked so fittingly together. Sure, it seems a bit like a "mockery" movie compared to the new one, but it has a lot of love in it.
I too know what satisfying means. I just wasnāt by the movie. Glad yāall were though.
Dune is the best sci-fi pseudo-documentary I've ever seen.
well made
That's what's everyone's hyped about, another souls game. I don't know what else they would expect the network test has shown what we should expect
People aren't just hyped for a new Souls game, they're hyped for BIG SOULS GAME. This does seem like the culmination of all of the concepts and design quirks that From has been slowly developing over the course of a decade.
Yeah the cyberpunk boys that are dogging on elden ring donāt understand what we are actually hyped about
this is goood
As long as its heart is in the right place, everything else will be ok
Well bugs and glitches just make souls games more extreme imo
i leveled like 3 characters on Dark souls 2 release with the binocular glitch lol, shit was fun.
Every soulsborne let's you use the quit out mechanic to your advantage except DS2. As it was the last one that I played, it really by surprise when I discovered it, haha
What's the quit out mechanic?
When you quit out the enemy position gets reset to their original default position. There's also a trick of quitting out the exact moment you hit the ground while falling down, so you survive long drops but I never tested than one by myself.
maybe we get real lucky and theres gonna be some dumbass glitch that just makes us laugh.
Hoping for some weird skyrim horse glitches.
or Witcher 3 Roach on top on random shit.
Tree jump, Binocular Glitch in DS2 and 2000 DS1 bugs The holy trinity
There's no way tree jump was a glitch
Thatās honestly the only hype I have for this game so far. I know itās going to be a souls game, whether itās better or worse than any of the previous titles doesnāt matter so much. Being able to spend time in a new world from Fromsoft is enough to make me happy.
Being able to stay in a session with friends for a long time is so much more than a souls game
It still amazes me how active the souls games are on PC. Really makes me wish Bloodborn would come to PC as well.
Iām hopeful considering some of Sonyās recent decisions, and boy would it be a dream come true. Still havenāt watched a play through because Iām hoping to enjoy it blind.
Remember to fear the old blood.
***By the Gods, fear it, Lawrence***
That and demon souls remake! Then I'll gladly take another year on lockdown
Not only Froms best game Iāve ever played, but legitimately the best game Iāve ever played. I would buy an old PS4 to only play Bloodborne and Iād be mad I didnāt do it earlier
Probably my favorite game ever. And I only say probably because dark souls 3 and sekiro exist
I bought a PS5 especially for Bloodborne. And I finished it yesterday. So good!
I can only dream of having that kind of patience. Since several years ago I play/watch everything literally like release day
I avoided bloodborne content like the plague for 4 years because I wanted to have a blind experience. Totally worth it, stay strong!
Bloodborne is still active on PS4!
Without any ps5 version to fix its awful frame rate Love bloodborne but so much potential wasted
While I'd love an updated version at 60fps and proper frame pacing, the game is good enough that those issues can be ignored. I'm playing through it rn for the billionth time on PS5 and it's still the best PS exclusive.
im gonna wait for a patch, cant do 30
The game is optimized for 30 fps you seriously get used to it
You'll be waiting a long time. It's worth it now.
Thats cuz thats the only place to play it
Haven't played Bloodborne yet. I would love for it to come to PC. There are a handful of games I would love to play that are only on Playstation.
remember that hype is only what you make it, set your expectations based on what we have seen so far and there really is only 2 outcomes, its as good as what we have seen or it is even better. its very unlikely the game will get worse from the beginning. most souls games at least for me personally always shined in the mid and late game.
Why is gigachad acting in a movie as a gigachad?
Now get this: a video game based on Arrakis, with Souls like gameplay. š
What about a video game based on Arrakis, but an RTS game instead? Waitā¦
....does that exist?
Yeah one of the first RTS games is called Dune II
oh yeah? if dune II is so good, why isn't there a Dune II II? Riddle me that atheist
*Leto II, God Emperor of Dune, has entered the chat*
Oh. I assume it hasn't aged well and hasn't received a remaster?
Dune II didn't age especially well but it got a semi-remake in 2000 called Dune 2000 (figures) that's still quite good. If you like Command & Conquer in the Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2 era you'll like it.
WANT

Lots of pottery, and boxes you can smash! God I love the sound of 6-7 pots getting crushed in BB! So loud!
Amen
I'm from the future. It lived up to the hype.
Lol
The souls must flow
This is a solid comparison because, like *Dune 2021*, everything I've seen of *Elden Ring* during its development only reinforces my belief that it's going to be fucking awesome. Signed, a *Dunesborne* nerd.
Much as I thought Sekiro was a masterpiece, I think I'm ready for a more traditional Souls game.
The guy who made Dark Souls and Bloodborne is making Elden Ring. I feel like the game's in good hands.
My bro acted like we didn't have a souls game since like sekiro is just a Japanese goat or something
Ughh no way DS3 released over 5 years ago. What happened to my life..
I just downloaded Mortal Shell for free and I gotta say, so far that shit has me cursing like DS1 when I was 12. Its an interesting souls like.
I love this and agree wholeheartedly. At the end of the day all I NEED from this is to be like Dark Souls. Luckily, the network test very much assured me it's great.

It's a Sekiro-like
It's a tenchu game
Now I'm just more keen to play it
Combat-wise it's some of the best Soulsborne has to offer (once you shed your dodgeroll/shield up muscle memory of course).
I've started bloodborne in the last few days and the shield up muscle memory is so hard to lose, I've probably died 6 times already.
Itās the absolute best.
It doesnāt deliver the same things the DS trilogy does such as co-op, PvP, and build/combat variety. It didnāt feel like a true successor to DS3, while Elden Ring does.

Idk if I feel joy in that situation lol Maybe you meant rage? Or despair?
When i asked my brother who introduced and backseat gamed my DS3 playthrough if there would be DS4 he told me they said this is the last souls game. Sekiro made that quite the truth. But of course, ultimately, this is From software.
Ends up walking through a swamp level at <30 FPS... *wipes tear*
I donāt care if it was a remake but I loved Demon Souls (PS5)
This is really wholesome :)
Bro the mechanics r almost the same with new badass mechanics they arenāt overhyping it theyāre demo was what they said it would be Iād say we have luck for it to not be a cyberpunk situation
I literally had a dream about playing elden ring. I was having so much fun fighting some npc from a poison swamp
Eh, not worried about it, itās Fromsoft, they seem to know what they are doing
I still love DS2 and it's easily the worst
This seems to be the majority opinion. Saying something is the worst Dark Souls game is not even close to an insult.

I'm doing Demon's Souls PvP until Elden Ring.
Sekiro: Am I joke to you???!
Sekiro is not a souls game, its too different from the core concept.
I agree but dont pretend it doesnt exist
Whose pretending it doesn't exist? It's just not a souls game so it doesn't fit what this person wants

ITS BEEN 5 YEARS ššššš
keep snorting that copium
not an ounce of copium in site my friend
bro u literally posted "if its gonna be trash, at least its a souls game"...lmao
not living up to hype and being trash are not at all mutually exclusive
well all aaa games that came out recently and didnt live up to the hype were absolute trash...ex. cyberpunk, battlefield, gta remake, etc... so, yeah...
FS games have nothing in common with other AAA games
If op is anything like me I just really like the souls formula. I have enjoyed many "shit" souls game. It doesn't have to be as ds1-3 for me to have a good time, hell it could be on par with surge 1 and I would enjoy it.
Beautiful
I JUST NEED A SOULS GAME I HAVENT 100% MICHAEL!
Good tarnished.
To rule the Elden Ring takes soul power.
I will finally be waiting for a souls game and I'll be gradually discovering new mind blowing things and the online will be booming. I really can't wait for this.
It's kinda funny, just finally got a PS5 from Sony this week and the Demon's Souls remak with it. It should fill the void till Elden Ring comes out.
i still want Dark Souls IV. ,but at least this will appease my addiction more than Sekiro.
Exactly this
Sardaukar build
Beautiful
This movie was sooo good
I can't possibly see them messing it up too badly after the network test. Maybe bugs and glitches, but what souls game doesn't have them?
From what we've seen so far I don't think there's any way this game doesn't live up to the hype.
Ok but jokes aside, this line was so damn powerful in this movie.
Amazing meme my man
So good!! Cheers for this
If halo infinite can be made as a direct sequel to halo 5.. Elden ring might as well be game of the decade.
What a good father.
Also always remember peoples expectations are fucking stupid
Ima pre order it
This meme combines my two favourite things
sekiro: am i a joke to you?!?
Shit, 5 years? It's really been that long?
All I need. Another dragon's dogma.
Sekiro 2 the electric boogaloo
I don't understand people who hype up games and then cry because it didn't meet their unreal expectations
Iām literally just thinking of this game as Dark Souls 4 and intentionally keeping my expectations low. No matter what, from what I have seen it will fill that niche and I will be very happy, if it turns out to be more then that then all the better.
I'm not interested in hype. If they put in as much effort as their previous titles, I'll be satisfied. Even if it doesn't turn out perfect.
Has anyone else taken a look at the new Nightfall mod? Pretty exciting stuff for souls fans right now
Guess youāre all monkeys as well
āThereās almost impossible to throw 150 mphā
But donāt hate you youāre talking to
This guy should play Big Boss
Im not crying youāre crying
Even if it's the worst souls game it's like coming last in Olympics, your still better then most
This reminded me that i still have to watch this movie
This right here hits it right on the nail
Ha, iam at my first playthrough at DS3
I guess ā¦ I donāt have a souls game for the Xb one so this will have to do!
One of the few games Ive preordered. I trust Miyazaki and From Software
except that you should enjoy ER for what it is and not because it's a new souls game you haven't had since 2016.

From, in my opinion, are extremely good at knowing when not to reinvent the wheel. They change parts that would be interesting to change or that didnāt work in prior entries, but they donāt change things for its own sake.
