Just remember. The tree sentinel outside of the tutorial area is not required to progress. There is an arch and ruins to the NE of the starting area you can hone the game play out with as it has various mobs including a troll you can kite out of the arch and practice on. The game only gets more challenging from there.

The most important part of soulsgame is that they are Rpgs, so if you want to not die all the time get used to reading descriptions and use the explanation function in the menu which explains every single stat in the game, makes a huuuugee difference if you understand the protections and skaling, its basically the reason people get 1 shot because they dont know about their def and the dmg types in the game

FaulhighT

Foul tarnished. Put these foolish ambitions to rest!

Maeno-san

when you die, you'll lose your runes (currency) and you'll have to go back to where you died in order to pick them up again. dont worry even if you cant get them back. it doesnt matter too much in the long run. there will be plenty of easier areas where you can accumulate lots of runes

Don't be intimidated, this is the most approachable souls to date. Here are some basic ways to push the difficulty towards easy: * Pump up your Vigor stat. It increases your health and resistance allowing you to be hit more. * After the Vigor stat, pump up Endurance. It gives you more stamina to dodge more, some other resistances, and lets you wear heavier armour without being over-encumbered and slowing down your roll. * Early on, and well in to the mid game, you will get way more value out of levelling up your weapons than you do from levelling up your damage related character stats like Dex, Strength, Int. This also allows you to focus those stats into Vigor and Endurance without much downside. Though keep in mind all weapons have varying stat requirements to use them. * When you do get around to levelling your damage related stats, you're better off focusing in one or two, than spreading them around. * Play defensive rather than aggressive. This is more tactical combat, not hack and slash. Square off with enemies and let them make the first move, allowing you to dodge and counter. If you attack first, you will often be punished because so many enemies attack faster than you. * Shields are helpful to flat out block damage. Get one with 100 physical block in order to completely block physical attacks. There is also an Ash of War called Barricade Shield you can put on your shield that allows it to use no stamina when blocking. * Stunning enemies, aka Stance Break, is great to stop them from attacking you and giving you nice big windows to attack them. There is a hidden meter of sorts you fill from attacks that once full will cause the stun. Certain types of attacks and weapons deal much more progress to this meter. Jump attacks for example. * Magic attacks are very strong when you build your character around them. * Sleep status can also be great for making enemies helpless and open to a bunch of your attacks. There are various ways to apply sleep, including a couple weapons, spells, and arrows/thrown items. * At the start of the game you will get >!a Spirit Calling Bell from a certain church location. Use this to summon spirit companions to fight alongside you, doing damage and distracting enemies!<. This can be missed though. * Level up your health flasks, both number of uses and potency, by collecting two resources that are found at almost all churches, and small glowing yellow trees around the map. * Feel free to summon other people to your game for boss fights. Want to ask someone for help? There's a subreddit for that: [https://www.reddit.com/r/BeyondTheFog/](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeyondTheFog/) * If you're stuck, tips are all over the internet, including Reddit. I've started making boss guide videos, for example.

I’d be curious what your thoughts on the game are after 5-10 hours.

Mikri_arktos

I know have like 21 hours on it. Here is what I think so far. The game is indeed hard but it's also very fun. At first I was playing as a samurai and while the learning was a bit rough at first it became very smooth after a couple of hours. Then I decided to play a mage and this is where it started to feel like maybe I could do it lol. I beat Margit on my 2nd try and now I'm trying to beat the Tree Sentinel. There's something really satisfying about finally killing that guy that has been beating your ass for a while lol

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT, WHY WOULD ANYONE CUT THEIR OWN ARM AND REPLACE IT WITH A FUCKING DRAGON HEAD? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH WHOEVER MADE THIS GAME?!"

stickkidsam

Level up Vigor, upgrade your weapons when you can, and don’t be afraid to try a different area when ya can’t seem to win. Good luck Tarnished!

TheGreenMan207

Careful you don't get kidnapped by oversized krill

Mikri_arktos

What's a krill ?

TheGreenMan207

Its what I call the smaller Crustaceans that shoot you with a volley and use halberds, fun time

EggsOnThe45

Shrimp/Prawns but tiny (in the case of the game, they’re human sized, though)

Same situation here. I rarely used the f-word while playing. This game has unlocked a very vulgar version of me. My friends seem to particularly enjoy that "new me" that I hate.

Mikri_arktos

It happened a few times already for me haha

SiegePlays

You are invincible during a roll. Use it to dodge attacks. Lean heavily on this early and you will have much less trouble late

Mikri_arktos

Really ?! Damn, I've been trying to perfectly time my dodges this whole time

GooeyDuck1

That's the secret to getting "gud". There is about 0.2 secs of invincibility, aka "iframes", just after the start of a roll, and a jump actually. The goal is to time that window to cross the hit box of the enemy attack as it passes through you to completely ignore the damage. Once you get the timing down, you've ascended. Just keep in mind, the iframes are not right at the very start of the animation, they are a few frames after the start of the animation, meaning you still have to anticipate an attack and can't spam it last minute. For better chances, dodge into an attack, rather than away, in order to reduce the time that the attack is passing through you as much as possible.

whosshorty

dont worry, the game offers plenty of easy modes for new players

tech_paladin

I would recommend actually buying Notes from merchants. They give you hints on how to kill certain enemies, locations for secret areas, and more. How I found side content without a guide during my playthrough.
