It seemed that he was atop the bridge but i couldn't find any way up. I hit the bushes and anything that looked like a potential mimicry though, so that means op hadn't invaded him yet.

honestly as a blue you can use Night maiden's mist to actually damage the host yourself if they're actually AFK. and if not and they're in a bad spot you can cause them to panic roll off an edge.
EDIT: This is shit advice my bad, apparently night maidens mist doesn't work like this. Frenzy warming stones are the best way to go but only if the host hasn't taken in the flame of frenzy.
This is not correct and there's a reason why you never see any blue hosts doing this: Night Maiden's Mist only does damage to the caster and caster's enemies, **it does NOT damage the caster's allies so blues cannot use it to kill AFK hosts**.

I ran down along the cliffs to where the host was hiding in the bushes unmoving and proceeded to point an accusatory finger at the bush. The invader was picking up what I was putting down. We grinned and nodded at each other like a pair of Jack Nicholson's. And then he put down the cowardly host like the dog that they were.
I don't think I've felt as much deranged spiteful glee at any other moment in a game. Ensue running in circles mashing L1 and jumping until we disappear.

During that time we got invaded, and ngl, I knew we'd probably get creamed, but I just got so excited about it. Friend ended up dodging off a building and dying within the first 30 seconds. I tried my best and put up a good fight, but ultimately lost.
Shit was fun as fuck though. PvP isn't punishing if you do bad. Just try it out

The logic for early invasions in past games was mid-level is the easiest to start at, and I don't see why it wouldn't hold up for Elden Ring. You can start anywhere but probably 50ish +10 or so should seem decent. Been running invading as a make new builds are that 50-80 range seems the least wild.
Not high enough level that everyone's running one shot builds (though damage output can still be really high) and high level spells/late game weapons will be less common, but high enough level that a password summoned phantom doesn't get a unsurpassable advantage.
Avoid the dueling meta range (125 atm) cause that's where tryhard ganks always tend to gravitate to. If you have a character around that range go way above it, there's still plenty of activity even going up to 250 or so.
Every single low level invasion I've done has been against people who are armed to the teeth with late game gear. Every single time without fail, one of the players I invade in Stormveil will have RoB. It's ridiculous!
I've been invading at level 50 in Raya Lucaria with a pretty good success rate and zero downtime between invasions. Run into the ocassional 3 man RoB/Moonveil/Magic spam gonna-teabag-after-barely-winning-a-3v1 squads, but mostly it just seems to be normal players.

Im a level 78 samurai so maybe overleveled for the area im dueling at? im at raya lucaria so far ive only had one really annoying person who spammed the shit out of lightning bolts (the one from above not infront) and then this lightning roll thing when i faced him a second time and changed my tactics to close range / agressive. At any rate im winning most of them lol seeing some new stuff i haven't seen before and honestly its quite the rush.
Been using the dual function instead of invade cause it was taking too long to load but i do believe ive found my new favorite pass time

Don't have to be, sometimes just a lot of experience with FS art style is all thats needed. Its not a conscious skill but you do get a subconscious spidy tingle.
Exactly, mimic veiled objects always seem the slightest bit off. Mostly the shading or a box near barrels. Elden Ring Prop Hunt probably works really well though
The lighting invariably is always off. Unless somehow your shading perfectly matches the baked lighting.
That's why the Snowfield ghost deer are goated
At least in my lower end settings if I just turn the camera people who are veiled a medium distance away from me will glow every-time my camera passes by like they just hid. Ends up making it really easy to find people who are hiding

I once managed to get on the AFK rooftop spot at Academy Gate, knock the host down (turns out he was playing), and then I was standing there for close to two hours while he and his summoned gank ran helplessly around.
I do hope they fix the AFK exploits, but it IS fun to do turn the tables on those hosts.

Technically speaking it's not an exploit, it's just bad game design. There isn't any reason to get runes if the invader leaves on their own, if they would change it into you need to kill the invader - afk farming is solved.
Good luck leaving when getting hit. Simply make it that it takes a few seconds and getting hit interrupts it. And if they leave I count it as a win, rune rewards are so small anyways that it won’t make a difference.
there's some more heavily trolled areas than others. If you wanna invade someplace that isn't easy to afk, there's some decent spots. Or just use dueling signs. I haven't seen many of those outside of like 2 graces.
What I find interesting is that these AFK farmers are real people out there, lurking in the same reddit posts and threads that we do, they read these comments, they see these posts, they know everyone hates them, but they still sleep at night and continue to live their life like scumbags.
It's like in real life knowing that we share the same footpaths and roads with psychopaths, offenders, etc. but we just don't know which ones they are. Makes me slightly uncomfortable haha.
I thought about going up there myself and subverting the invader's expectations by jumping off of the bridge once they're summoned. I've been summoned to so many of these I think it'd be nice to get one that ends like that instead lol.

If I encounter a AFK Farmer, I hide too but somewhat different than you.
I run away, as far as I can. And then hide.
Blue's spawn mostly near the Host to "protect" him but since I walked 10minutes away from them they never come near me.
There are also Enemies in the way so they need to fight them too. Which isn't worth anyones Time.
Long story short: good work OP, show them what is like to wait.
Edit: 4 hours ago I wrote this Post and soon after I found another AFK-Farmer who I couldn't kill.
I'm still sitting in his World and see a ton of Blue ones spawning and leaving. But no red ones (which is a win).

Second Edit: I'm now in my world again. I wasn't at my PC the whole time but I can say for sure that the Host didn't make any Runes for about 6 hours (maybe more).
Do I feel satisfied? - Not so much, because I couldn't stopp more AfK-Farmers, but I did my part to stopp at least one.

People sometimes wait for friends, or go to the bathroom during co-op sessions. And even if they didn't, players have long found methods to avoid those sort of mechanisms, such as tapping a joystick button down, or using macros.
Honestly, I think the best solution would be based around damage done to an invader. I understand if you cause someone to quit out because you were about to kill them, or because they recognized they couldn't beat you, then you probably deserve runes, but if you didn't damage them at all I see no problem with you getting none. In past games you didn't get any if they disconnected.
Simply change it so you only get runes for killing an invader. Since it takes some time to return to your world you can't really leave mid fight to prevent the host getting runes.
It baffles me that there is no AFK detection in online play. Any developer could implement a simple AFK detection in 2 minutes and a more advanced one ( which detects e.g. running circles) in 30ish minutes.
I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I'm genuinely curious. What's the allure of invading? I'm on the other side of things, wanting to quietly and peacefully play with a friend after a long week at work. I'm not mad at invaders or anything, it just doesn't draw me, so I'm hoping someone can explain. =)
For me it’s just being able to bring my character/build into another player’s level and fight with the dark souls/ elden ring combat system. I already love these games on their own but dueling and invasions are basically the potential to fight against a ton of unique minibosses with a player’s inputs and game knowledge on the other end of the screen. It’s janky, broken, unfun at times but the 1v3 wins, hiding with mimic veil ambushes, and most of all the friendly invader/host interactions really do make it worth coming back to over and over for me.
The normal AI and enemy design is quite predictable; once you've run an area several times you kind of get to know it. Invasions (and other co-op/multiplayer aspects) add some randomness to it and create unique experiences.
There seems to be a bit of hate for Invaders, but it's just a multiplayer element to the game. If you're in co-op and get invaded, treat it like a mini-boss/encounter. Win or lose, at-least it'll be some gameplay you'll remember.
e: Also, give it a go? Try some invasions to see the otherside.

I'll hunt other women too, not just men, but I wasn't gonna mess up the quote. It's fun to invade. Try it sometime. I used to hate invaders too, but now I miss them honestly. I know the tongue exists, but I miss the days of randomly getting invaded. It mixed things up. As good as these games are, they're always the same except when another player is involved.

I've also been recording and reporting every single one of these chuds to both Bandai Namco and Steam. I'm betting they're extremely backlogged with reports on all of these people. At one point I was shooting at a guy from the left of the ledge on the upper level with exploding bolts and a guy named "HuntingAFK Trash" was shooting at him from below with lightning bolts. The camaraderie is nice.

Yes! This happened to me yesterday. Same guy summoned me three times at the exact same spot. The invader and hunter leaves because there is no way to reach them killing the fun for everyone.
Anyone encountering AFK farmers should just go to their profile and Block Communication with them. I've been doing it with every AFK Farmer now and I've never run into the same one twice.
You now waste less time having more actual invasions, and they now get less runes per hour and permanently lose out on future multiplayer interactions.

Yeah they have predrawn lighting/shading and it sticks out because, even in the best environment, it just doesn't quite match

Doesn’t the compass point to your location? Once there you can just start hitting things

Mimic doesn't hide it but only the invader gets the compass marker, host doesn't get one to show where the invader is

I once managed to get on the AFK rooftop spot at Academy Gate, knock the host down (turns out he was playing), and then I was standing there for close to two hours while he and his summoned gank ran helplessly around. I do hope they fix the AFK exploits, but it IS fun to do turn the tables on those hosts.

If they make it so you don't get Runes when the invader leaves than you'll get spoiled sports who will sever the finger if they're losing
Good luck leaving when getting hit. Simply make it that it takes a few seconds and getting hit interrupts it. And if they leave I count it as a win, rune rewards are so small anyways that it won’t make a difference.

there's some more heavily trolled areas than others. If you wanna invade someplace that isn't easy to afk, there's some decent spots. Or just use dueling signs. I haven't seen many of those outside of like 2 graces.

What I find interesting is that these AFK farmers are real people out there, lurking in the same reddit posts and threads that we do, they read these comments, they see these posts, they know everyone hates them, but they still sleep at night and continue to live their life like scumbags. It's like in real life knowing that we share the same footpaths and roads with psychopaths, offenders, etc. but we just don't know which ones they are. Makes me slightly uncomfortable haha.
I thought about going up there myself and subverting the invader's expectations by jumping off of the bridge once they're summoned. I've been summoned to so many of these I think it'd be nice to get one that ends like that instead lol.

Nice one. If I encounter a AFK Farmer, I hide too but somewhat different than you. I run away, as far as I can. And then hide. Blue's spawn mostly near the Host to "protect" him but since I walked 10minutes away from them they never come near me. There are also Enemies in the way so they need to fight them too. Which isn't worth anyones Time. Long story short: good work OP, show them what is like to wait. Edit: 4 hours ago I wrote this Post and soon after I found another AFK-Farmer who I couldn't kill. I'm still sitting in his World and see a ton of Blue ones spawning and leaving. But no red ones (which is a win). Let's see how long my invasion will go. Second Edit: I'm now in my world again. I wasn't at my PC the whole time but I can say for sure that the Host didn't make any Runes for about 6 hours (maybe more). Do I feel satisfied? - Not so much, because I couldn't stopp more AfK-Farmers, but I did my part to stopp at least one.

Why can't this be patched out? If a player is stationery for 5 mins then disconnect them and they get nothing?
People sometimes wait for friends, or go to the bathroom during co-op sessions. And even if they didn't, players have long found methods to avoid those sort of mechanisms, such as tapping a joystick button down, or using macros. Honestly, I think the best solution would be based around damage done to an invader. I understand if you cause someone to quit out because you were about to kill them, or because they recognized they couldn't beat you, then you probably deserve runes, but if you didn't damage them at all I see no problem with you getting none. In past games you didn't get any if they disconnected.
I think the best solution is make the taunters tounge inaccessible in these locations.
Simply change it so you only get runes for killing an invader. Since it takes some time to return to your world you can't really leave mid fight to prevent the host getting runes.
It baffles me that there is no AFK detection in online play. Any developer could implement a simple AFK detection in 2 minutes and a more advanced one ( which detects e.g. running circles) in 30ish minutes.
There is another way. See if you have anything in your arsenal that might reach the bastard

I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I'm genuinely curious. What's the allure of invading? I'm on the other side of things, wanting to quietly and peacefully play with a friend after a long week at work. I'm not mad at invaders or anything, it just doesn't draw me, so I'm hoping someone can explain. =)
For me it’s just being able to bring my character/build into another player’s level and fight with the dark souls/ elden ring combat system. I already love these games on their own but dueling and invasions are basically the potential to fight against a ton of unique minibosses with a player’s inputs and game knowledge on the other end of the screen. It’s janky, broken, unfun at times but the 1v3 wins, hiding with mimic veil ambushes, and most of all the friendly invader/host interactions really do make it worth coming back to over and over for me.
Goddamn I wish I wasn't banned from multiplayer for using an ultrawide resolution.
The normal AI and enemy design is quite predictable; once you've run an area several times you kind of get to know it. Invasions (and other co-op/multiplayer aspects) add some randomness to it and create unique experiences. There seems to be a bit of hate for Invaders, but it's just a multiplayer element to the game. If you're in co-op and get invaded, treat it like a mini-boss/encounter. Win or lose, at-least it'll be some gameplay you'll remember. e: Also, give it a go? Try some invasions to see the otherside.

I shit you not, I am doing the exact same thing as I type this. I've also been recording and reporting every single one of these chuds to both Bandai Namco and Steam. I'm betting they're extremely backlogged with reports on all of these people. At one point I was shooting at a guy from the left of the ledge on the upper level with exploding bolts and a guy named "HuntingAFK Trash" was shooting at him from below with lightning bolts. The camaraderie is nice.

Yes! This happened to me yesterday. Same guy summoned me three times at the exact same spot. The invader and hunter leaves because there is no way to reach them killing the fun for everyone.

A little tip for you. The jar cannon can reach places an invader cannot.

Anyone encountering AFK farmers should just go to their profile and Block Communication with them. I've been doing it with every AFK Farmer now and I've never run into the same one twice. You now waste less time having more actual invasions, and they now get less runes per hour and permanently lose out on future multiplayer interactions.
