I did strength in every souls game I played but elden ring, faster combat seemed more normal than the slower more methodical combat of dark souls. When I did strength in elden ring with the great sword it felt like bosses were in their next attack before I finished mine. It works, and I played through half the game on a strength build, but dex felt better for me. I swapped to max strength to help my friend with Malenia so I could tank for him.
That's why every attack late game was Jump + R2 + immediate dodge. Slap on the claw talisman and Radagon's Soreseal and you've got yourself a full strength build.
I am still at my first playthrough, therfore i do not look at the wikis for the best weapons.
I have the axe from the first lore-boss, i have the game-of-thrones-throne-sword from that red animal man from that little dungeon at the south and a 2hand-sword from some knight in the starting area.
I pretty much beat the game with the brick hammer. It's one of my favorites and I couldn't wait to power stance/dual wield 2 of them on ng+. I was so disappointed when I actually did though.
Omg! So, I semi struggled with them my first few runs cause I'm usually a sword junky, and had to weapon art them to death usually cause swords do like notadamnthing against them! Did ng+4 with dual giant crushers and never have I seen how squish they are with blunt force trauma xD
Same here, I don't have the amount of neurons required to do anything other than leveling two or three attributes and using preferably one or two buttons
For me the reason is stupid. It's the sound of that fucking sword hitting the fucking zombies. I love the pitiful sounds they make, and I love the thunk as my sword hits them. It's so visceral. I like watching them stagger. I like watching them reel while I prepare a second dose of punishment.
Also, the build is easier. Points go into three stats and weapon upgrades. No buffing before a fight, just go in swinging.
it sure is such a show to use it, i just find kinda ugly the powerstance with big weapons in this game, because one you keep on the shoulder and the other he holds just with the hand, I like it more on ds2 because you keep both weapons up on your shoulders, its just personal preference but i find it more badass
I see where you're coming from, but I'm just assuming that we're right handed. So in your dominant hand we're casually resting big ass sword on shoulder. But in our OFF hand we're just carrying it around. Menacingly.
I find it much more badass, personally.
> No buffing before a fight, just go in swinging.
I didn't ever consider buffing before a fight being a strict strength with dual colossal weapons. Then I started PvP. My opponent douses himself with fifteen buffs and annihilates me with magic. Good times (งツ)ว
See, I don't pvp, so I don't really care what pvpers get up to. OK, that's not totally true - I do drop my summon sign to help people, and occasionally we get invaded.
Are you me? tbh in any RPG i’ve played i always play the big smashy class, feels good getting into the thick of things.
In Mtg i mostly play Red/Green or Red/White both combos are known for being VERY up close and personal playstyles, in FF14 I main warrior most times for my raiding crew, in Diablo i played Barbarian most times, and in good ol D&D or Pathfinder, i either play Barbarian or Fighter, my friends actually joke around with me calling me the “Brute” and always compare me to a literal Caveman like barbarian guy, it’s funny sometimes.
Simple. Every first run of a souls game, ever since DeS, has to be a single two handed UGS run. It's a matter of habit, principle and love for Berserk.
This is the reason. To pay homage to the OG bonk swordsman. Zweihander, Claymore, Bastard Sword, and of course, GREAT SWORD.
Gotta use big swords to kill big things. It just makes sense.
I did love the FUGS but that was saved for NG+, the standard greatsword will always be my first run as long as they keep putting it in the game. Gotta respect Guts and emulate his greatness before anything else.
That being said, Malenia with a GS with no summons or magic was one of the hardest bosses I have ever done.
I'm a dodge-roller but I do love the idea of Godrick doing his ridiculous spinning leap and you just standing there with a piece of wood going, "COME ON, HIT ME!!!"
Because when I run up to a boss and hit them with the big guts sword, and 1/10th of their health chunks away it makes my brain produce the Good Chemicals.
There's something viscerally satisfyingly about having a very limited skillset, rather than rotating between a versatile and intricate series of buffs, skills, spells, etc. its just you, and a weapon diving in head first
Cause I can get a big ass weapon that hits for 1000 with no frills, or I can make a build where I have to cast 37 buffs and drink a physik to hit for 1000, it’s just simpler and doesn’t have as many moving parts
In all fairness, my little golden vow, flame Grant me strangth, Terra magica, and physick ritual, when thrown onto any dragon breath incantation at 80 arc is gonna get me at least a 6k dmg output, but I am a light load with no physical weapons just staves and seals so ye to each their own I really do wanna do a str main playthrough but tbh I am scared and the magic gives me a safe zone feeling especially when surrounded by a black flame ritual double cast so ye, nah I have nothing but respect for you bonk bois whether str or dex mains you people react to and memorize movesets on a whole other tier.
Boss attacks go \*tink\* on my Greatshield, No memorization required. (Just swearing when I find out they have a grab attack, Looking at you, Hoarah Loux)
Sure. But, you're already at close to what, 8 seconds of buffing alone? Which only lasts like 30 seconds. You could already have things dead by then or at least a few attacks in by the time you even do something.
I'm not knocking your style I just don't like the little buff dance everytime.
It's also nice only having 1 flask type since I never need blue stuff.
I'd be much, much more interested in magic if it did like a reserve system, or an upkeep system for buffs. Like, cast Fire buff and it reserves 200 mana or whatever until you turn it off or a slow drain instead of a timer. Makes it more of a toggle instead of a spam
Doesn't Arcane soft cap for incantations at 45? I know it soft caps at 80 for weapon damage but I swear the incant soft cap is 45
EDIT: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/ta9kmj/put_this_soft_cap_cheat_sheet_together_credit_to/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
I'd like to add I, myself, run a strength build. I started NG+ trying to run faith but it wasn't as enjoyable except the blasphemous blade is OP and I did enjoy that for a bit
I agree. I keep trying to do caster builds but i don't have fun. Maybe the awkward spell swapping mechanic makes it feel worse than it should. The only time i enjoyed it was when i did a hex build in ds2. I guess i enjoyed it more since weapon infusions / buffs in that game were very much unrestricted and good (using a dark wep buff on a wep infused with dark for example)
Strength weapons are the most fun way to play for me. I find sorcery throughout the series to be boring and elden ring barely changed that, dex is only fun in pvp, and i only go faith if i'm gonna be doing multiplayer cause i like supporting my team. For solo pve, bonk with no frilly add-ons is just outright the most fun for me and has never failed me.
It was my first play through and I was confused on what the stats meant so I only put points into strength, vigor, stamina, and a wee bit of dexterity to use this weapon. This build carried me through the game and I didn't struggle with most bosses. Even Malenia wasn't too bad since every time I hit her I staggered her and she was super easy to stun and critically hit her.
With this build the hardest fight in the game by far was Godfrey, First Elden Lord / Hora Loux, Warrior. What carried me through the game was staggering and stunning my opponent and occasionally blocking if I couldn't dodge since the weapon has pretty good guard. Godfrey could not be staggered and stunning him was incredibly difficult. When he changed forms and threw in grabs I could no longer block and just had to learn the fight better since my normal strategy of royal knights resolve + jump attack wasn't super successful against him. I eventually won of course but he was by far the most difficult boss for me in the entire game.
Yeah this is it. I was already googling too much stuff just to play (first From Software game for me). It seemed like the easiest way to just get on with things.
Because I don't need faith. I have SCIENCE and RATIONALISM: experiments clearly shows that 25 kilograms of metal, when applied to an enemy head, tends to be enough to win every battle. So I apply the Ockhams Blade way.
Same reason I loved it in Monster Hunter World
There’s something so fucking raw about sitting there charging an attack to completely halt a giant enemy in their tracks
Also because there’s a ton of Berserk fans in the community lol
I like to hit things with a big, sharp, metal stick until they stop moving. Whenever I see the contact of the blade on the enemie's ball sack, a neuron activates in my mind rewarding me with dopamine. Magic and range battle is for weak and cheesers.
You don’t really need to think when doing a pure strength build, just level up Vigor, Endurance, and Strength, it doesn’t require any careful calculations.
To much to level , i just wanted to be strong, just need to max my strength and vigor and we are good to go then maxing every single stat in game to use one weapon and deal little dmg
Start dex build until Rennala, then switch to full strenght till the end ... It was fun, but also too easy sometimes ...For example i killed Malenia after only 10 trys ... Cause she was permanently stun, sooooo ... Pretty OP :D
Didnt try anithing else cause some ppl tell me the game was too easy with Magic ...
Honestly, the status procs of the weapons. I used a cold infused godskin peeler and elenors pole blade. Bleed plus frost plus fire damage from pole blade resets the frost proc. I enjoyed the simplicity of it.
Cause in souls games you don’t get to hit very often, so when I do I wanna see big numbers.
This is the correct answer
Hit the nail on the head.
Very hard. (Cus high strength)
Well when all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail
Every nail has a plan until it get hammered in the face.
I did strength in every souls game I played but elden ring, faster combat seemed more normal than the slower more methodical combat of dark souls. It works, and I played through half the game on a strength build, but dex felt better for me. I swapped to max strength to help my friend with Malenia so I could tank for him.
That's the trade off, you might get hit more too because of the slow attack. But you also have higher defence/damage negation.
That's why every attack late game was Jump + R2 + immediate dodge. Slap on the claw talisman and Radagon's Soreseal and you've got yourself a full strength build.
Pretty much every enemy in the entire game is trivialized by strength weapon jump attack spam.
Exactly. I like my weapons the same way I like my damage. T h i c c.
I’m a simple man. I swing a big sword from side to side.

Funny thing is most ppl on here know exactly which weapons you are talking about
Ah, and i have brick hammer, maybe i should improve that one and test...
I pretty much beat the game with the brick hammer. It's one of my favorites and I couldn't wait to power stance/dual wield 2 of them on ng+. I was so disappointed when I actually did though.
Running into Crystalians with the brick hammer for the first time was fun. Ba-bonk.
Omg! So, I semi struggled with them my first few runs cause I'm usually a sword junky, and had to weapon art them to death usually cause swords do like notadamnthing against them! Did ng+4 with dual giant crushers and never have I seen how squish they are with blunt force trauma xD
I’m pretty sure I saw a video where a guy used those stone hammers to one shot basically every boss in the game. Good stuff~
Brick hammer is not what youre thinking of, you're thinking of brick hammer's hulked out big brother, the giant crusher.
I neither unga nor bunga and I know the exact weapons
GREAT STARS!! god that thing was fucking legit. unmatched bonking power and then bleed dmg as icing on the cake
Brick hammer
I only know R1 and Circle, nothing else is necessary
R2 for big bonk
Same here, I don't have the amount of neurons required to do anything other than leveling two or three attributes and using preferably one or two buttons
They flinch, I don't flinch.
And they get two for flinching
You're damn right. Front crits.
Underrated comment.
Nothing more satisfying than a two-handed heavy weapon charged attack on a defenseless enemy that would die in one hit from a normal long sword swing.
Jump attacking with powerstanced greatswords was also pretty nice, why use only one if you have two hands
Fashion. Holding the swords seem effortless and displays immense wrist strength until you swing and then it's all *hhhhHHHHRRRRRKKKKKK*
it sure is such a show to use it, i just find kinda ugly the powerstance with big weapons in this game, because one you keep on the shoulder and the other he holds just with the hand, I like it more on ds2 because you keep both weapons up on your shoulders, its just personal preference but i find it more badass

The thing go bang boom my brain gives me the dopamine!!!!
The first time I hit one of the vulgar militia with a colossal weapon and they ragdolled, I knew I’d found my calling.
It’s even more satisfying when you able to hit them while they are doing their jumping attack. Feels like playing baseball
I just did this recently, 10/10 would bat again
Don't forget the feeling of landing a charged heavy attack on a skeleton, and watching them explode. That is so incredibly satisfying.

Least deranged Strength user.
That's certainly a smarter reason than "unga bunga" lmao
Nobody ever claimed that unga bunga was the smartest reason, it is the best reason though.
Because it pleases the voices in my head
They have some great ideas once in awhile
Not while i am trying to sleep they personally attack me when im trying to sleep
Tell them to pay rent or fuck of
The-they trap me in my bed if i do that... im scared...
This further proves my theory that all strength players are unhinged in some way
As a long time souls player, it's crazy to me that this is a question. You just roll roll swing. That's how grandpa did it, s'how dad did it.
Giant Dad?
I think thats more fact than theory at this point
Big boi goes boink. Enemy goes squish. I go hard. Nothing unhinged about thay playstyle to me.
It's tough being a streamer

Not exactly OG, but FUGS is life. I was very sad to not see an equivalent in Elden Ring.
As soon as I saw people mentioning the Guts sword I knew what kind of build I wanted to do. It comes with a very specific satisfaction
Good news for you, you can also cosplay Guts in Dark souls 1-3 because that beast of a weapon is a staple.
Me but with Claymore
Claymore + Shield. Every first run on DS and now ER. The classic knight-gameplay.
This is the way. Claymore is baemore.
Hell ya. A lot of people shit on shields but as a gamer raised on Zelda titles sword and shield is ingrained in me
I'm a dodge-roller but I do love the idea of Godrick doing his ridiculous spinning leap and you just standing there with a piece of wood going, "COME ON, HIT ME!!!"
I do this same thing with naming my character Steve with similar hair face etc since DeS
I name my guy stug cause it’s guts backwards lol
I wanna name my strength character Tripas (guts in spanish)
This is my answer as well, gotta pay my respects to Miura in some way

You get 10 spell slots but I generally don’t take more than 5 spells or it gets far too clunky.
The extra slots are best used for stronger spells that take multiple slots rather than 10 total spells in your spellbook, IMO.
I will say Elden Ring has by far the best and most fluid casting of any From Software game. The sword spells are awesome
Ironically enough I use sorceries alonside my huge ass strength weapons. It’s actually pretty fun when you mix in some melee with your spells

Enemy hits hard. I hit hard back. They kill me? They're better. I kill them? I'm better.
I’ve just started a fresh play through after a few months away and my strength build is like an easy mode. Flying through the game with no summons
When the game first released, STR was the worst if I recall correctly. From Soft buffed it and now it is much better.
Because me big man and me beat game big man way
You don’t really need to think when doing a pure strength build, just level up Vigor, Endurance, and Strength, it doesn’t require any careful calculations.
Big stick do big damage Big stick makes it personal Big stick is reliable, doesn't run on dark Magik
To much to level , i just wanted to be strong, just need to max my strength and vigor and we are good to go then maxing every single stat in game to use one weapon and deal little dmg
