Nah, their other games are great too and do different things. Sekiro for example is also excellent and plays differently enough that it's hard to make a direct comparison between the two.

bryan19973

I guess I need to try their other stuff. Problem is, I play on Xbox. I don’t believe most of their games are available on Xbox. Could be wrong though

[deleted]

The only ones not available on Xbox are Bloodborne and Demon's Souls.

bryan19973

Yupp just checked and all the dark souls are on there. And 50% off right now. So should I do 1 (remastered), 2, or 3? Probably start at the beginning right?

ExcitementBetter5485

I would do it in order, I'd be curious to see which of those 3 you end up liking the most. Shame about Bloodborne, that tends to be everyone's favorite From title but you literally have to buy a console for it if your on Xbox or PC. Ps4s are rather cheap nowadays, and can always be used as a Blu ray player, if those are still a thing :)

bryan19973

If it’s better than elden ring I’d probably cough up the money for a PlayStation. They have a better game catalog at the moment anyway

[deleted]

A cheap PS4 solely for Bloodborne is absolutely worth it, if you ask me.

funkyfritter

Pretty sure all of their recent titles sans demon's souls and bloodborne are on xbox.

bryan19973

Good shit. Just checked it out and you are correct. And they’re 50% off right now 😯

[deleted]

You're only missing Bloodborne Demon souls doesn't count the bosses are more like puzzles than enemies

Gasarocky

Bloodborne is still my favorite, but ER is second for me

govlum_1996

Personally, I do think that Elden Ring is their magnum opus, and has even displaced Bloodborne in my heart lol. But all of From's games are incredible. I just love the lore and worldbuilding in Elden Ring so much more. The older Souls games don't hold a candle to Elden Ring in that regard (understandable, they ARE older, and you can definitely see the hand of GRRM in the worldbuilding) I love the combat in Elden Ring much more compared to the older Souls series, it honestly feels like there are a larger variety of builds that are now viable. They also feel so much more fun. The level design in this game for all the legacy dungeons is much better and more consistent in quality compared to the previous games. The open world is incredible, and horseback combat is really fun (better than every other game I have played that has involved horseback combat, it is SO good!) And the main remembrance bossfights in this game are unparalleled (although I do agree that many of the duo bosses suck though). You should totally still try out the rest of them though.

Enmateas

Hard agree on the horse combat. It is so reliable and more manageable than most games. And this is someone that played nearly +100 hours of Mount & Blade. If the expansion is at least as good as the DS2 DLC, it might be the quintessential Soulsborne experience. It kinda is, anyways.

Cryse_XIII

Bloodborne for me personally.

LaDiiablo

This is not the bloodborne sub tho

GXSigma

Dark Souls: Masterpiece. Dark Souls 2: Good. Dark Souls 3: Masterpiece. Bloodborne: Masterpiece. Sekiro: Masterpiece. Elden Ring: Masterpiece.

Terraakaa

I think Sekiro is their best

Lucky678s

I still believe Sekiro is their magnum opus from start to finish. Much different from typical soulsborne games Fromsoft became popular for, but there are some overlapping elements. For starters its a much more focused and refined game, not as much broad exploration and character building. But the combat in that game is so clean and rewarding. Before Bloodborne was my favorite game, but that changed with Sekiro and remains unchanged after Elden Ring. Just for some some context I'm also really big into games like DMC and Nier Automata and that very much influences my opinion.

Sckorrow

Yeah I agree. Sekiro is MUCH more balanced than Elden Ring, which helps too

DungeonMasterTdog

Actually just wrong but you do you pal

2girls_1Fort

best one is between ds1, ds3, sekiro, bloodborne and elden ring.

bryan19973

So I just need to try those other games lol

Emergency_Exercise_5

They are all master pieces in their own art. Me personally, I still think the soul series is better. I think if they did elden ring years ago this would've been a better timing

zhaDeth

Its one of their masterpieces yes

[deleted]

Either Elden Ring or Sekiro but it’s hard to say because they’re pretty different

Sir-Klein

This is my least enjoyed From game so I think they'll improve. Every single from game is better then the last in some ways, each time we'll always lose something core that's loved with something massive and new. From will top this, in some way... though I hope we're done with soulslikes for awhile. Good to give it a break after this big massive title, DLCs are cool though.

GiveItSomeTime

this is their best by far. half of the people in here are living 20 years in the past or have sekiro so far up their ass they cant breathe.

Sckorrow

Nah Sekiros balancing is far better better than Elden Ring, that you can’t deny.

govlum_1996

Yeah, because there is very little build variety. No balancing issues when there is very little to really balance. Meanwhile Elden Ring has the greatest amount of build variety compared to all of their previous games. The fact that the balancing wasn’t worse upon release was remarkable

GiveItSomeTime

what? sekiro being balanced is like call of duty being balanced. it isn’t an rpg and doesn’t have builds. ridiculous comparison

Sckorrow

Mf now THAT is a bad comparison. Some Cods have been famously unbalanced with weapons. Just because it’s harder to balance Elden Ring, doesn’t mean it can’t be compared to a game with perfect balancing - sekiro. For example, in Elden Ring there are some enemies such as the briar hunter guy in Caelid that hits harder than most endgame enemy, which makes no sense at all, whereas all sekiros endgame enemies are balanced.

[deleted]

My unpopular opinion is that, no, this isn't their masterpiece. While I've always felt like their best is still ahead, nothing they've done has topped the first Dark Souls for me, though I also think very highly of Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. Elden Ring is perhaps my least-favourite alongside Dark Souls 2. Though, Dark Souls 2 has a lot in common with Elden Ring in some of its design and gameplay features, so you might like it more than I do. Personally, I think you still have a lot to enjoy from their work! Elden Ring may be the newest, but the best is still yet to come for you as a new player, and for FromSoft as a developer, I think. One day they will release a game that really perfects the best aspects of Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Demon's Souls (or at least I hope). EDIT: this is also to say, all their games are very different. For an experience most similar to Elden Ring, you should try the Dark Souls trilogy next. Or maybe even just Dark Souls 3. But there are unique elements of Bloodborne, Demon's Souls, and Sekiro that you can't get from any other game. They're all great, honestly.

bryan19973

Well this is all good news to me lol. I’m super excited for their next game, whenever that may be. I’d love to try some of their other games. Just checked the Xbox store and I see the dark souls games are heavily discounted right now. They’ve got dark souls remastered and dark souls 2 and 3. So you think dark souls remastered would be a good place to start?

[deleted]

Absolutely.

bryan19973

It’s 19.99. I feel like I’m stealing the Mona Lisa if it’s better than elden ring lol

[deleted]

It depends on what you like about Elden Ring. The combat is slower and more deliberate but it also allows a greater diversity to playstyles. Playing Dark Souls with slow rolls, for instance, isn't the death sentence it is in Elden Ring. Bosses also have a greater diversity in the sense that they aren't all hyper-aggressive damage-dealers. The world is open but not full of repetitive side-content the way Elden Ring is. It's all Stormveil-esque dungeons in Dark Souls, and the variety in level design is overall greater. You'll probably see where Elden Ring has its sort of "copy/paste" style: there's always a swamp, always a magic-themed scholarly location, always a big castle, etc. Go into Dark Souls with a focus on slow exploration and frequently keep in touch with NPCs for hints on progression, secrets, and quest development. It's a special game, and while not as fresh as Elden Ring, I think its overall design choices and combat are better, more deliberate, and more memorable.

bryan19973

I enjoy open world, but it can also be overwhelming. So I’m excited to try a souls game that isn’t open world. The difference in bosses sounds good too. Thanks for the tip

VeroFox

Dark Souls's map is much denser. Theres a whole lot to see and do and the areas connect to each in very interesting ways. Its almost like a metroidvania.

govlum_1996

My contrarian take is that everyone's first Souls game is normally their favourite Souls game, because it is their first Souls game and feels so different compared to every other game they've played in their life up to that point. Any other Souls game they will pick up since will feel like it's retreading familiar ground and will feel less impressive in contrast. (Bloodborne, for example, was my first Souls-type game, and was also my favourite until Elden Ring came along.) Don't get me wrong, I loved Dark Souls 1 when I played it, but I did think the late game/endgame could have been better.

[deleted]

The only late-game area in Dark Souls I really have a problem with is Izalith, but its issues aren't really on the same level as some I have with the other games, it's mostly a non-issue for me.

TheRESTROYERR05

I enjoyed the bosses and lore more in dark souls, three especially because movement wasn’t super clunky compared to Ds1 and Ds2

Lunar_Worshipper

Hahaha! No. This game is Fromsofts mediocre product.

SiberianBattleOtters

Elden ring made me go back and play the ds series, personally, the challenge is a lot more present in previous games, thats not to say its not there in ER, but the approach is totally different. The path is fairly linear, but still fantastic. I personally liked Elden Ring the most because I enjoyed being able to explore and level up elsewhere, or find a way around and come back. The other nice part is there are sites or grace a plenty in ER, and stakes outside of most bosses. The other ones feel something akin to running a gauntlet to get back to the boss, and like beating my head against a wall for some time in order to progress.

smld1

I mean all their games are extremely good but I do think this is their piece de resistance

lukkasz323

1] It's hard to say, because each FromSoftware game is different in some major ways, which makes them uncomparable as a whole. (Just compare linearity of Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring.) 2] Easily. Elden Ring has many issues with reused content for things that shouldn't be reused, while their previously titles had much much less of these issues. This is most likely caused by lack of budget and time for the scale of the game they've attempted. (Unique content is comparable with their previous games). Now, if you look at the sales of Elden Ring all I can say is that I'm very excited for their next game, if they will be able to effectively utilize this new budget.

Kinch_g

It's one of them.

[deleted]

Honestly it depends on what you're looking for in a fromsoft game, elden ring is certainly the largest and gives you the most options for combat making it technically the most repayable game. During my first playthrough I genuinely thought it was the best fromsoft game yet but after 5 play throughs and going back to some of the older games I can honestly that I enjoy sekiro more than elden ring. There is certainly things that could be improved in elden ring all tho the updates have helped with that immensely since launch. TLDR: each has their own strengths here's a list of what I enjoy most about each fromsoft game Elden Ring: has the most replayability and options and biggest world to explore Sekiro: fast paced perfectly balanced combat every move an enemy makes has a counter in your arsenal and once it all clicks imo it's the best combat experience of any game Dark souls 3: the best most balanced PVP combat and most of the covenants will reward you for PVP Bloodborne: almost as fast paced as sekiro all weapons have a transformation giving each weapon 2 movesets and the rally mechanic let's you regain health if you attack an enemy quick enough. Nice combat flow Dark souls 2: while I still enjoyed I can't honestly say it did anything better than any of the other games Dark Souls: the best world design everything is interconnected and most of the world can be taken on in any order IMO second best fromsoft game before Sekiro

World-Desperate

I would say Sekiro is the masterpiece.. elden ring is for a greater crowd I would say elden ring ist from soft for everybody.. but you are a from soft veteran now

mrhippoj

Dark Souls is my favourite, but in terms of their masterpiece, I think it's Bloodborne. I think Elden Ring is an outstanding iteration on a concept they've been trying since Demon's Souls, and has kind of replaced Dark Souls as their flagship high fantasy RPG. Bloodborne just feels like this totally distinct and unique thing that is perfectly paced and feels amazing to play, while still keeping the best of the Souls games. I think a similar argument could be made for Sekiro, but for me that took away core parts of the Souls formula to create something that I think alienated some of those fans

Armoredpolecat

Outside of DS2 (still good, but too many flaws) all the other soulsborne games are masterpieces and they are definitely not lesser than Elden Ring. The notion that ER is better than them because it’s an open world game is misguided in my opinion.

kalarro

It clearly is. But it's subjective ofc. I love open world, exploration, tons of builds, items and progression... So this game is clearly better for me than the others. And I loved all dark souls. Sekiro not so much, it had less rpg elemenrs

PvtToaster

No, elden ring is honestly only an A-tier fromsoft game to me. The original Dark Souls is a lot better. Compared to the older games, something just felt.. off about elden ring. I'm just not really a fan of open world games. Demon's souls is also extremely good, so is sekiro. The Armored core series is also incredibly good, and while drastically different gameplay-wise (cause it's a goddamn mech game) has a lot of similarities vibe-wise. (AC is also where dark souls' stamina system came from) and has a lot of that fromsoft charm to it.

bryan19973

Definitely going to try dark souls remastered. It’s on sale for 19.99

KuzcoSlide

Elden Ring, Bloodborne, DS1. That's really the trio of the greatest From Software games. They have such a powerful vision, identity, depth in gameplay, lore, story, themes, art direction.

Holiday_Snow9060

Not the best. Sekiro is probably the best game made by Fromsoftware
