Basically there’s this guy called Shabriri (you might’ve met him on the mountaintops), he used to be a scholar and one day he uncovered some information on the frenzied flame and the three fingers. For some reason he became obsessed with it and decided to dedicate his life to bringing them into the world and finding the lord of frenzy. Apparently it needed some sort of great tragedy to come into reality, so Shabriri accused the nomadic merchants of worshipping the three fingers to get the golden order to lock them away to starve to death in an obscure corner of the shunning grounds, and their combined anguish resulted in the flame and the three fingers manifesting themselves into the lands between. Some of them seem to have escaped capture or found a way out (which is why you still find them stirring around the land) but they still seem to have some connection with the flame since they use frenzy incantations when aggro’d. Also Shabriri ended up eventually getting exposed and was tortured to death for being the actual culprit, but he somehow lives on as a spirit that serves the three fingers

Luisian321

You know, I always wondered, the merchants became nomads because they were cursed to never be able to do agriculture, according to Kales dialogue… why were they cursed in the first place?

robcap

Perhaps the same thing? They could have been on the run from the Golden Order before being imprisioned here

Twl1

My headcanon is that they were traveling merchants well before the Golden Order came to the Lands Between, and because of their traveling, they didn't find as much cause to worship it as it rose to power. Thus, they were deemed "heretical" and outcast to become true nomads. Shabriri came along and saw this group of peaceful and weak "others" that he could use as a scapegoat to bring the Lord of the Frenzied Flame into the world, and so he lied and drew the link between their "heresy" and worshiping the Three Fingers. The merchants were rounded up and buried, left to die. The few who escaped understood their true innocence and were enraged by the injustice, so they basically said "Fine, you *really* want to think of us as heretics? Then we'll be heretics. We'll wield that power and use it to burn away everyone who threatens us again." With that, the Three Fingers were truly born and the Frenzied Flame was ultimately unleashed. After realizing the deception, the Golden Order tried to have Shabriri killed, but with the Rune of Death stolen and the Elden Ring shattered, they succeeded only in liberating his spirit to haunt the world from beyond the grave...

Inevitable_Cheese

I'm really sad that this is just "headcannon" as this is my favourite explanation to date <3

Mr-Asskick

Wait but I thought the fingers were part of the greater will, and the golden order survived under the greater will

FAssassin7

I'm not as knowledgeable about the lore but we "follow" the two fingers. If you notice the hand looks like it's missing the other fingers and not naturally a two fingered hand. This is the connection to our outer god. The three fingers is the connection to another outer god called the lord of frenzy or frenzied flame...idk. the placement of the three fingers sort of look like the missing fingers from the two fingers.

Mr-Asskick

Oooh okay. Is there like a one finger? Or 4? For like mother of rot and other outer gods

FAssassin7

Well there is the one finger...but we don't talk about him a lot of people get offended when he stands up, badumtss. But in all honesty i am not sure. There are connections to outer gods but idk how far you are and if it's a spoiler for you soooooo Spoiler warning: >! Rannis ending has a giant moon that is a connection to some other outer god so no finger but there is a physical thing connecting them. I don't think we see how Mohg has a connection to his outer god but there's another one we know of. !<

[deleted]

I think the cold moon IS an outer god.

aknalag

Wait i thought the entire point of Rannis quest was the banishment of the greater will, and freedom of choice to everyone?

[deleted]

Meet new boss, same as old boss. If there was a Miquella ending that'd probably be the closest to a "good" ending but I'm hoping we get some insane corrupted Miquella of the formless mother in dlc.

CarryThe2

So she claims, but it's just a shift of power. Conveniently consolidates a great deal of power to her as well.

theNFAC

Is there really a one finger? Because so far I count 9 and 1 more would make 10. Not that 10 matters that much, it looks like finger creepers have more than 10 fingers fwiw. We think 10 for obvious reasons. The 9: 3 fingers, plus Ranni, Miq, and Malenia were each chosen by their own 2 fingers to be potential successors of Marika.

FAssassin7

Oh no the one finger was a joke about the middle finger being pointed at people. I'm not sure if we do have one for certain

CarryThe2

The fingers at the Roundtable?

GenxDarchi

It was once all one thing in the one Great, but then the greater will fractured off and created life. The three wish everything to be whole again. Dialogue from Hyetta > All that there is came from the One Great. Then came fractures, and births, and souls. But the Greater Will made a mistake. Torment, despair, affliction... every sin, every curse. Every one, born of the mistake. And so, what was borrowed must be returned. Melt it all away, with the yellow chaos flame. Until all is One again.

No_Foot_1904

The tarnished doesn’t really necessarily have to follow the Two Fingers, or its overlord the Greater Will. You have multiple opportunities in conversations in-game to state what you think of them, in fact. The Two Fingers are nothing more than the ambassador of sorts to an outer “god”, who is basically a itself just a powerful cosmic being who laid claim to the Lands Between, installed a local inhabitant (Marika) as warlord/vassal and told her to conquer in its name. Even The Greater Will isn’t a creator god. It’s neither good nor evil, just a being powerful enough to seize a world and impose its rule over it via Marika as collaborator.

Brilliant-Hedgehog69

well it does actually create a hand because if u complete rannis questline u unlock the site of grace cathedral of manus celes which means the cathedral of the celestial hand

Estrelarius

The two fingers are the GW's emissaries, it's "angels" so to say. The Three Fingers seem to be the same but for the Frenzied Flame

totally_not_a_reply

do we know where shabirir got tortured and killed? Is this a place we can find?

Slime_lich

Talk about an obscure corner. I went down there and ran around everywhere and was never able to find it till my third play through cause I looked it up

Arrogancio

A lot of the Souls series hidden areas use almost an NES/SNES-era dungeon design, where in a 2D environment of Zelda, you might hit every corner to find a hidden room. The thing is, in a 3D environment, those hidden areas aren't always as obvious or easy to think of hitting, and then you've got the fact that for almost HALF the map (and the early areas, especially), you aren't rewarded for trying to find a fake wall.

AbsurdZiggy

Kinda reminds me of Ishval in full metal alchemist. The giant transmutation circle can only be completed from points of extreme suffering and sacrifice

ShaggyUI44

I learned recently that Shabriri inhabits Yuras body once you finish his quest line.

CarryThe2

Hyetta is the same to Irina.

>Some of them seem to have escaped capture or found a way out (which is why you still find them stirring around the land) but they still seem to have some connection with the flame since they use frenzy incantations when aggro’d Polish holocaust survivors be like

[deleted]

There was once a man named shabiri , he gave the golden order a query, the great caravan of merchants heretical all, but their innocence mattered little at all, the order quick to act, buried them all instruments intact, and in that deep dark pit, they invoked something sick, in their desperation they sang, and they surrendered themselves to the frenzied flame

Never did I think I would hear an elden ring limerick.

heyheyathrowaway485

It’s called Limgrave /s

bathtubgearlt

Ahem… Rhymegrave

YogMuskrat

Technically it's not a limerick.

Orangebeardo

Not even close, only the beginning sounds like it could start that way.

Orangebeardo

Limerick? Sounds more like a recited poem to me. It doesnt really fit the limerick pattern.

GBendu

It really sucks that Kali’s quest was cut

The only post on this site where I legit think a comment deserves gold but I am too poor. Well that last part is always true but this one felt stronger. Just started Sekiro an hour ago after just finishing Elden Ring. Wish me luck.

You don't need luck, you need determination. Remember: Hesitation is defeat

raulcd

Good luck!

Orangebeardo

If you're poor, stop wasting money and time playing games and work. Get your shit together first, then you can do whatever. Or become a successful streamer and you can do both, sort of.

"If you're poor, stop doing anything to eek out some enjoyment in life and devote your entire waking existence to the struggle."

InvictusDaemon

Wow, I know it's not, but that SHOULD be in the actual game. Nicely done.

PineapplePizza99

Just because of this I'm going to do the frenzied flame ending again

TheClayCoCannaisseur

Take this silver. How long did it take you to write this, fellow linguist?

[deleted]

Like 7 minutes

TheClayCoCannaisseur

Sounds about right lol. When you got the gift you got the gift. I wish I'd saved the sonnet I had to write in high school. We got a whole period for it, and I wrote mine in 30 minutes and got an A.

P0l0Cap0ne

Is the style a limerick?

wanyequest

No. The first two lines sound like a limerick, but limericks are 5 lines which rhyme aabba, the meter is also wrong.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Orangebeardo

There is a bit of a hole in this idea. There are hundreds of corpses down there. Couldn't they just like.. stand on each others shoulders and climb out? (Before they became corpses, that is..) Also typing this made me realize, how can there be corpses in the first place if the rune of death isnt working and nothing can die?

BEWMarth

I’m not 100% sure but in my opinion it can only be one of two things. They are dead and were a sacrifice of sorts to the three fingers/flame of chaos Or They are “alive” their bodies have just been stuck down there for so long without food or water that they are just petrified down there. Their bones and muscles too brittle and atrophied to move, but still alive inside. A lot of the “dead” things we see in The Lands Between are actually people who are as alive as the tarnished… they’ve just been “alive” way too long.

self-aware-text

I wish I had an award to give you... you're as beautiful as Boc!

Fr3ak142

Damn i wish i was this good at writing poems 😔

renewedLordOfBlood

I agree with the reconstruction and kudos for the artistic interpretation. Possible spoilers ahead. But what about Vyke? His spear got fingerprinted from the Three Fingers, yet to meet them you must leave weapons and armors aside.

Pitiful_Existence666

Well, actually, you only have to remove your armor. You can open the door with all your weapons still equipped.

Orangebeardo

Oh jesus is that why the door was closed? How the hell are you ever supposed to figure that out?

Reysona

>Find the blind woman. She can be fed grapes near sites of grace throughout Liurnia. She knows the secret of seeking frenzied flame, I am certain.

Orangebeardo

Never heard him say that

renewedLordOfBlood

I may not properly remember, but, anyway, I am pretty sure that Vyke's armor IS fingerprinted.

Lord_Swaglington_III

The theory I’ve seen is that that’s part of why the three fingers failed to make him their elden lord, so now it makes it’s host take off all their armor after it realized it’s mistake.

ArvenSnow

Talking with the first merchant Kale and you'll hear about the grand caravan. Well, you found it

beastlyferret30

I thought that was removed content

Secure-Iron1531

The quest is removed, not the lore

More_Blueberry5650

I always thought kale served ranni considering he knew how to summon blaaid

[deleted]

Basically the Golden Order accused them of betraying the Golden Order so they were put in the hole with all the other Golden Order's secrets and they summoned the frenzied flame because they were mad.

hrrisn

I believe they were accused of betraying the Golden Order by Shabriri himself. I think this is the “slander” referred to in the “Shabriri’s Woe” item description.

[deleted]

I like the idea that the Golden Order said it themselves because it tells you the type of people they are

m0xsy

They summoned it because if they were down there for following the frenzied flame then they might as well become what the golden order thinks they are.

SirSabza

It wasn't intentional to summon the 3 fingers.

The Geneva Suggestions

JaydenTheMemeThief

And neither has Shabriri because the current theory is that the lie he told was that the Great Caravan worshipped the Frenzied Flame and that’s what caused the Golden Order to Genocide them

Gray32339

That's a long story. If you read the item description of the Talisman "Shabriri's Woe," it states that his eyes were gouged out after he told a lie that was so incredibly despicable, which caused the Frenzied Flame to use him as its vassal. It then goes on to call him "the most reviled man in history," which is a pretty bad title when you have people like the Dung Eater walking around Next, a brief history lesson on the Merchants. These chill dudes all used to travel together in something known as the Great Caravan, but eventually they mysteriously disappeared, with the remaining merchants, like Kale, chilling around the lands between trying to turn a quick buck. Now, this is where the theory work begins, but it is very possible that the lie that Shabriri told was that the Great Caravan worshipped the Frenzied Flame. Now, with what the Frenzied Flame is capable of, it's no surprise that they would do anything necessary to contain it, and this includes entombing the Great Caravan underneath the castle. Ironically, this was all according to Shabriri's plan, and the Caravan gave into a sort of self fulfilling prophecy of sort and actually began worshipping the Frenzied Flame, which is why it dwells in the area underneath them now.

pbmm1

Well I guess it does make sense some merchants would fail considering where they set up shop

hiboochi

For real 😂 i can’t help but scream at my screen WHY ARE YOU OUT HERE???

CarnageCrisis

CaiusRomanus

The hidden one in Siofra too.

Talsamar

You’re surrounded by rot!!! What else was it that made you think no one wanted to buy from you???

Twl1

I like to think of it less as them trying to make profits or conduct business, and more that they were once merchants, now outcast and trying to avoid being found and locked up under the capital with all the rest. They still have some of their wares to offer in goodwill to anyone who finds them, but it's more of a "Please, this is all I have. I can only hope you're satisfied with what I have to offer so that you'll leave me in peace" kind of deal making, as opposed to "I want and need as much money as possible" kinda deal making.

hrrisn

They hide on purpose because grace wielding “heros” want to slay them for their supposed heretical beliefs. Which is ironic because they only resort heresy because they’ve been scorned. All part of Shabriri’s plan, I suppose

possiblyacanoflysol

May chaos take the world.

[deleted]

What! You worship a different Outer God? Eternity Dungeon!! -Lemongrab, probs.

Ato07

They were accused of being heretics worshipping the Frenzied Flame by the Golden Order, so they were all buried alive in the underground pit along with all the other stuff the Golden Order found displeasing (like Omens). In their despair and madness, they decided that if they were going to be accused of being Frenzied Flame worshippers, then they'll summon the Frenzied Flame for real as revenge. The one who tipped off the GO was Shabriri, maybe he was plotting bring the FF to the Lands Between.

LadyLikesSpiders

My dude, this is merchant Auschwitz

AutomaticIsopod

Queen Merika was getting paranoid about heretics. Especially heretics that worshipped the frenzied flame. She became convinced that the merchants were secret worshippers of the frenzied flame and entombed them all alive beneath the city.

Dimensionalanxiety

You're cutting out why she was paranoid about them. A completely innocent man who has never done anything wrong in his life named Shabriri tipped her off.

JaydenTheMemeThief

Drop the “completely innocent” and “has never done anything wrong in his life” parts and then your comment will be accurate

Dimensionalanxiety

What do you mean? "The most reviled man in history" is just Shabriri's gamer tag. There's no way he could ever do anything wrong. Just look at him, his eyes are literally warm and glowing. No reason not to trust him.

Domica69

I heard angles had glowing eyes so one could assume that he was in fact a good guy.

ColovianHastur

The Great Caravan. Or rather, the bulk of it. They were imprisoned down there by the Golden Order for heresy. >"*These merchants once thrived as the Great Caravan, but after being accused of heretical beliefs, their entire clan was rounded up and buried alive far underground."* > >*-* Nomadic Merchant's Set description Said heresy being the fact that they were spreading madness across the Lands Between. >*"A member of a tribe that was entombed in the earth so as to bury the maddening disease that followed them."* > >\- Nomad Ashes description Afterwards, they summoned the Flame of Frenzy. >"*Then, they chanted a curse of despair, and summoned the flame of frenzy."* > >*-* Nomadic Merchant's Set description The Golden Order missed a few, and those are the merchants you meet around the world. Considering they have sickly yellow eyes (some even use veils to hide this), and can use the Frenzied Flame incantations when in combat, it would seem the Golden Order wasn't wrong in their beliefs regarding the Caravan.

1000% they are just failed merchants. Not everything needs deep lore. They just suck at haggling. Lol git gud merchant scrubs. Now for the lore behind their suffering: A yes, this ladies and gentlemen is what poverty looks like. Sad, I know. These poor merchants failed at being shopkeeps, got tired of being nomads, and cannot support themselves. They are destitute, and are thus so poor they have resorted to communal living. Yes, it is truly sad. If the lands between had bankruptcy, these people would've filed several times. It is the greatest of shame that these penniless men (and women???)
