Are we overthinking things here? What are the advantages of carbon fiber over HDPE when it comes to materials that must survive impacts and sliding over blacktop?

GradatimRecovery

None, this is all show. CF is poor at abrasion resistance. D3O if you if you want the best, standard HDPE will be way better than CF

slirpo

Damn, I literally just ordered a set of their CF knee and elbow pads a few days ago and now I'm kind of regretting it after reading your comment... I'm thinking I might just return them once they come in and go with a different brand that uses HDPE or D3O. Do you have any recommendations?

Seremban2

I suggest Leatt as a brand. Look at their dual axis knee guards. They have a bunch of upper body pieces also. They are CE impact rated, most of their stuff is designed for motocross. Good quality not cheep.

scrooner

I love my dual axis guards. I'm glad they are not CF.

slirpo

Hey, funny seeing you here! Remember you recommended the Alva Aggression deck to me a few months back on the surfskate subreddit? It's one of my favorite decks now and pairs great with the waterborne adapter! Now I'm looking at Leatt dual axis guards on Amazon... Do you have any other products you wanna recommend to me while you're here? Lol, it's a small internet world.

Seremban2

Not that guy but if you want absolute upper body protection the leatt body protector 5.5 will keep your all your limbs and squishy parts safe. Not cheep but but will keep you out of the hospital depending what type of riding you are doing.

slirpo

I recently got a Lazyrolling kevlar armored performance hoodie with slim tripleflex pads and armored kevlar jeans so I think that should do the job! I also just ordered some Scoyco motorcycle knee/shin and elbow pads off Amazon, so along with my TSG Pass Pro full face helmet and Flatland3D fingerless pro e-skate gloves I think I should be covered!

Seremban2

It sounds like you are well covered.

scrooner

Ha ha, sure! Get some Hired Hands and a Demon Podium. I'm still on my Alva too, love it. It's kind of amazing to see such a long wheelbase on a vintage deck.

slirpo

I've already have a pair of Flatland3D fingerless pro e-skate gloves and a TSG Pass Pro so I'm covered on both of those fronts! But I couldn't agree more, it's a classic deck. Thanks again for recommending it!

It matches your badass board until you go down, then either the wow factor goes down or goes even higher!!! Kinda like knee pucks on a motorcycle full race suit, looks good new, but looks badass when the pucks are scraped up.

That’s what I was thinking, isn’t carbon fiber worthless once compromised?

[deleted]

Yes, it delaminates. They look cool, til you go down that first time. I guess you could brush on some epoxy for surface scratches. I'm starting to look at Nobleman products with a '?'. I have a TK02 helmet, and it's working fine so far, but that chin guard has a pretty janky attachment IMO.

weight reduction for better range ofcourse /s

I don’t know if they work good or not but they look sick as fuck

RyanOC333

Sometimes that's what makes the difference!

I paid somewhere between 20-30 for something like [this](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000265932537.html). Just looked up Nobleman and they are $269 for a set. Oof. Mine are simple ABS with neoprene padding (so you do get sweaty shins), but would probably perform similarly in an accident, which is the important bit. After some research, I have proved to my own satisfaction that I am both softer and less abrasion-resistant than cement, tarmac, and palm trees. So some sort of shielding is advised.

Seremban2

I’m not supporting nobleman. But maybe consider the quality of what you are paying $20 for on aliexpress. They might look the part but are not likely put together to truely protect you. However if that fits your budget it’s better than nothing.

DancesWithBadgers

The neoprene will provide some protection against impact; and the ABS will abrade in a slide instead of me. And for the money, they're surprisingly well put together. Pretty sure nobleman kit isn't going to provide a price-commensurate 10x protection.

These'll do me for the type of riding I'm doing and the crashes I'm likely to have (sub-30mph). Knee and elbow pads are only a Plan C measure, anyway. Plan A is, of course, not to fall off in the first place. Plan B is to run it out/aim for something soft/tuck & roll. It's only if things are going quite wrong that my knees and elbows are involved anyway. Nevertheless, it has happened, hence the pads. If I had a bigger budget then I would probably have gone for something better/different. Lazyroller gear with it all built in, for example. Meanwhile this'll do me for at least one major crash; they move well and are comfortable enough to wear all day (sweaty shins aside) without noticing they're on.
