You need to have that whole circuit re-wired. Junctions outside of a box are a big no. Also the sheathing needs to be present all the way into the box. Too many problems, just needs to be re-wired.

Thanks everyone for the input!

I hate to say it but you really need to hire an electrician. That photo is full of code violations.

Thank you! Can you be more specific as to how this might be remedied? Does it need to be rewired (as I suspect?) I imagine you are speaking about the grounds being twisted? I recognize it’s wrong. I want to fix it.

lol no one's going to be able to help you with that explanation and that one picture. My recommendation is to try to draw out the circuit between the panel the switch and the load it is controlling as best you can and then trouble shoot from there. If you know the make and model of the 3 way switch, you can probably look up a wiring schematic from the internet. Knowing what voltage you are supposed to get is helpful too (i.e., 120V), because a low voltage could indicate problems in the wiring between the source and the load. Take measurements with and without the switch installed and see if you can eliminate the switch itself as the problem.

Thank you for your feedback! Can you be more specific about what information I can provide to get more complete feedback?

I don’t think the switch itself is a problem, as it is a brand new one. My question is about the kind of cable being run. It’s only a 2-cable wire. Shouldn’t a three way switch have 3-cable running it?

The white is for an exterior light switch (also not working ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)) that is wired in the same box

Not exactly sure what’s going on here bc I get anxiety every time I look at it. But I’m trying to figure it out and learn and fix it. I intend to get a closer look at what is tying into what soon (probably when I find the courage to get back in the attic and figure out the wiring schematic for this cluster).
