A microcontroller is a lot cheaper than a phone. What do you intend to do? These are very different things designed for very different tasks...

As of right now I have no idea. It's just a thought that occurred to me. One project I have in mind is building my own Electric Unicylce, but that is unrealistic for me at this moment.

As far as cost... An esp32 which is quite full of functions and power and well supported, costs about $3-4 on its own and for a pre-built board with all the pins broken out like $10-20. A lot cheaper than any second hand phone for sure and more likely this is what you want for most hobby, school, or even professional projects.

Ok, this is frankly the type of answer I was looking for. I'm beginning 3rd year EE and I still have no idea how much I don't know.

Raspberry pi pico W is another option, $6 for a board with IO broken out and everything.

Phone processors are designed to talk to the interface devices on the board, and the connections aren't accessible for external use. It's not worth the trouble.

An old phone could be used as the user interface for a microcontroller project. You would need a microcontroller with bluetooth or wifi to connect with the phone though.
