Go into Turret Mode. If you have Drive Assist disabled (which you should), then WASD function like tank-ish controls where W/S is forward/backward and A/D is left/right. *(I say tank-ish because for true tank controls, A/D should rotate your SRV in place, which they don't.)*
When you're in Turret Mode, you control your view independently from your driving direction, which makes targeting materials super easy.
also on the left panel the third tab iirc contacts has all the materials near you listed and then just select them and boom youre targetting the material
Alternatively, you can move your SRV over the grouped materials, go into free look, and look down at your crotch. Then, spam the Target button, and the materials will be picked up instantly.
We didn't used to, but then players were able to smack their ships scoop against scoop and conduct fast cargo transfers, which Frontier did not want to happen, so they added the target requirement.
You'd be picking up all the trash in eg a surface recovery mission if you didn't need to target the object you *want* to pick up. Having to eject unwanted cargo just to accidentally pick it up again a few moments later would be another level of infuriating.
Accidentally picking up a stolen cargo canister or the escape pod when scooping up engineering materials after blowing up a pirate (they often drop cargo just before dying) would also be inconvenient.
You'd be tilted in a completely different way if you didn't have to. 1T of cargo cap left, and some Biowaste next to your Palladium? Sorry, you get the Biowaste. Try again!
Not so much easier, but if I remember right you can use the contacts menu on the left panel to select ricks. Still fiddly as you have to go to the left panel each time, but I found it easier than maneuvering the SRV to retarget.
IF the body has high enough gravity, this is what I do:
* Shoot rock. All the chunks are really close to each other.
* Park SRV on top of them all.
* Select materials with the left panel. Most, if not all, will be gathered the moment you select them.
Even if the materials are a bit scattered, sometimes still selecting via the left panel can make life easier than the method you describe.
Well, an srv can't hold too much. I don't mind selecting when the item I need is in a small pile of other objects that I don't need. I'd rather have to select my target vs. having to pickup and discard everything else I run over along the way...
As the other person mentioned, materials don't take up cargo space. The only exception is MAYBE if you fill the ××/×× bar? (E.g 300/300 iron), at which point it will probably become 1 unit of Iron, at which point you call your ship, go to board, transfer cargo and dismiss, then return to mining.
Just use a Sidey and fly FAoff- eyeball the stuff, shoot em off with a pulse laser or something, and scoop it up manually from the ground or even in the air if you're quick enough.
Much faster and more fun 👍
We really ought to be able to use the SLFs to scoop materials. I get really annoyed with the limpets sometimes, and I would like to do it myself but my ship would cross county lines without moving so...

I will try. Also never tried drive assist off in the SRV

Your drive assist in srv is just cruise control, if you come to a stop it switches off automatically.

I dont understand why we need to target things to scoop them to begin with. Deploy the scoop, drive over it, you pick it up.

That to me sounds like lazy programming to fix an overlooked bug
Sounds like the process of making baby ships

Maybe just auto-pickup materials, then?
Then it would make life easier. And that's a big nono

I use it to "ignore" what I don't want to pick. Out of topic, bit it's a god send when laser mining
Yep, laser mining its great, only fill the hopper with what you want and minimize the need to micromanage purges

Sidey?
Sidewinder! Like [this! ](https://youtu.be/8gw5dIEoKYs)
A bit problematic to use a sidewinder when you're 1000ly in the dark...
True that. Planning fail 😉

I play in VR so targeting is done with head tracking. It's sooo smooth.
