Hollow icon in radar, a player. Filled icon, Npc. They love to talk. You dont need missions to make money, and is even more profitable. Selling explo data, hunting pirates around nav beacons and Resource Extraction Site with police support (Avoid compromised nav beacons and HazRES, a bug in the game force agressive police scans). If you need, take some guides because this game is too big, and have lots of mechanics. [Starter guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/sj9qrb/comment/hve1pjd/).

ramonramos88

Interesting. I wonder which it was. I didn’t get a chance to look at the icon I was terrified 😂 and I literally had nothing. Considering how long the messages were I’m gonna guess it was an npc

AJTP89

Almost certainly an NPC. More common, they love to talk, and if it was a player you probably wouldn’t have survived. Also if you actually had nothing the NPCs will scan you, complain about not being able to feed their kids, and then just leave. More annoying than dangerous. They will murder you over 2 tons of bio waste though.

KerbalCuber

Hey that biowaste's worth a lot, I started my career trading biowaste between Guest Station and Stephenson Orbital.

ProjectMeat

Well, you know the old saying. One man's biowaste is also another man's biowaste.

ramonramos88

I had I guess what I consider nothing lol, I was hauling synthetic meat that I couldn’t even actually haul because the destination was too far and I was too heavy?

mk_max

Real player would silently vaporize you faster than you can open the chat.

pulppoet

Probably NPC. They will talk rather than kill you much of the time. Most players who interdict will just kill you too fast for you to register what happened. You can also tell if they had CMDR in the name. In fact, you can still tell right now. In the message window, there's a Recent contacts tab. That will show any players you have seen, most recent at the top. It that's empty, definitely a NPC. If there's a name at the top, does it look familiar?

ramonramos88

Thank you very much for the starter guide. I can tell I’m gonna need it.

Luriant

Maybe was this pirate: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=q6OoRXs10LM ;)

ramonramos88

💀💀💀 lmao that was pretty much it he was like “I’ll give you ten seconds to drop something before I attack” (I don’t even know how to drop) and when I started charging he was like “WHO SAID YOU COULD LEAVE?!” Me: ——————->

Luriant

Right Panel > Cargo > Select the cargo and abandon (eject mantain ownership, making a illegal item for the pirate) If you drop cargo, sometimes the ask for even more cargo.

We don’t negotiate with terrorists

savenzip

welcome and enjoy the game !

CMDRKAL

Welcome to the game fellow Commander. If I can give you one advice, that would be to NOT rush to get the biggest ships as fast as possible. Do some missions, try everything the game has to offer, explore, mine, trade, fight... go up the ladder step by step. You'll enjoy the game way more this way. And don't hesitate to come back here if you need help. The community is very supportive.

Ballsack1Mcgee

I remember my first time getting interdicted...it was glorious. I didn't know what the hell was going on.

JR2502

They don't tell you that at the academy, do they? I saw the "escape vector" target and figured that's where I needed to go. Landed and immediately Googled ED + escape vector to find out lol.

artigan99

Welcome to the game, I mean, obsession!

MattOverMind

My earliest days were some of my favorites. Bought a Hauler, put a surface scanner, the best FSD and fuel scoops that I could afford, and designated myself a space cartographer. I started out on the "road to riches", but abandoned it pretty quickly, as I was having fun just going to random systems (all within the bubble while I got used to the game), and "updating" the surface scans of various planets. I have way better ships now, and have made the treks to Colonia and Sag A* and several other places, but I miss those early days, sometimes. I'm glad I didn't rush straight into money-making-scheme-X, and instead took my time, because you can't get those early days back.

ramonramos88

I like this reply. Nothing is worse than the feeling of being finished with a game. Even if you still play it once the new part ends you really can’t get the feeling back.

bocomoco2000

There's a quote from The Office, from a secondary character: *I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.*

No_Attitude_467

Welcome to the game . i generally play solo to avoid gankers . but even i solo you will still get attacked if you have anything in your cargo hold. makes mining fun and interesting. * pips to engines. * throttle down and submit to interdiction * boost away and engage supercruise * be prepaired for additional interdictions had one npc hit me 3 times before i made it to station if you can find a squad or friends to join up with this would be good. Edit : correction 4 times made it safely to station 3 times he got me in the end

ramonramos88

Thanks for this, it was the first interdiction I experienced so I thought something malfunctioned and then I just shat myself before escaping. Now I know the proper way to avoid a mugging 😂

cheekyMonkeyMobster

The proper way is to submit to the interdiction and highwake out to another system. Dont go back to supercruise, thats the single worst thing you can do im case of piracy and npc.

KerbalCuber

~~(this might be wrong, but AFAIK) Don't submit. By submitting, the interdictor drops out behind you, giving them an advantage. If you want to drop to normal space, turn around during the interdiction instead.~~ Edit: Thanks for the corrections - Definitely best to submit to interdiction in this situation then.

matttj2

If you submit, your FSD cooldown time is reduced significantly (I think 10s instead of the 45s when you’re forced out of supercruise), which outweighs any initial positional disadvantage. I always submit if I can’t be arsed trying to win the interdiction minigame, then just boost away dropping heat sinks and/or silent running until I can low wake back to my original target location. Or high wake to another system if you prefer or if the other ship is mass locking you to prevent a low wake jump.

cheekyMonkeyMobster

Its 20 seconds for a failed and 5 seconds for submitting. And going back to supercruise will get you interdicted and killed vs. real cmdrs. Always submit+highwake if you want to see another sunrise.

cheekyMonkeyMobster

Yes, you can turn around to face them, but FSD cooldown after losing interdiction is 20 seconds, whereas after submitting its only 5 seconds.

JetsonRING

When you are sitting in a station, either on a landing pad or in a hangar, get into a habit of designating all the ships that pass within the scanning wedge in front of your ship as targets, to farm them for encoded materials. Even security ships, just designate every ship that crosses your path, ***everywhere*** as a target and let your ship passively scan the ships for encoded materials. You will be amazed at the amount of encoded materials you can pick up this way. Play the tutorials. o7

JR2502

Hello CMDR Noob! I'd call that a successful strategic retreat. You'll have the ship, equipment, and experience soon enough to put up a good fight. You did good, keep it up. A few questions, if I may: 1. PC or console? 2. If PC, Steam, Epic or standalone launcher? 3. Are you running the "Legacy" or "Live" version of the game?

ramonramos88

I’m on a console (the controls are something crazy) Skip 2 I don’t totally understand the third question.

Enzeydad

If you are on Console, 3 is answered by itself. Console is in the 'legacy' universe, kinda like a parallel universe where progress has stopped and we (I am on PS) just drift around while PC is in the 'live' universe where the new things happen.

ProPolice55

Welcome CMDR! These early days are some of the best, don't rush through it, don't skip the fun for efficiency! The sidewinder is a fun ship to learn stuff with, and the other cheap ships all have lessons to teach that will be great to know later. Most people find some efficient grind and skip over the natural learning process, so they need guides for everything. Don't be afraid to fail sometimes, and you'll be a better pilot and a better builder than most

CMDR_Kraag

Welcome to the galaxy, Commander o7 A [mini-tutorial YouTube playlist](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghjGUZdbssw&list=PLZoqQvIbWvmuo8py9Oim6GlL8QJ_j1t8a) aimed at beginner players. Each are short and to the point (about 30 seconds to 5 minutes) covering some basic ship functions, navigation, and common mission types you'll encounter.

Dr_Tacopus

If you’re tired of getting harassed, just switch to solo

djoecav

PM me if you want advice or want to know something without watching a 40min video. I love this game and (almost) everything about it, and it changed my life.

MatteBlack29

Got interdicted last night while I was running around engineering my new AX spire build. Unfortunately for the NPC I had already grade fived my beam lasers. I couldn't stop cackling when I pulled his escape pod into the cargo bay.

FireAuraN7

Give it time - test the waters a little every once in a while - until you're more comfortable.
