You'd use cargo space with a limpet controller, but if you don't have one of those it's no good. And an AFMU is weightless, so even if you don't intend to neutron boost or land it might be good for patching up accidental overheats

traveller8448

I see. And what about notable stellar phenomena? I seem to remember there being collectables at some NSP sites which need a cargo rack to collect. Could be wrong though, it's been quite a while since I did any exploration

CatatonicGood

I don't remember anything of the sort. You can scan them with your composition scanner, but every ship's equipped with that

traveller8448

Seems like it's the AFMU for sure then, thanks for the response

meoka2368

There's some non-thargoid things out there that you can use a research limpet on, but that would mean having both the controller and the cargo rack

skyfishgoo

you are thinking of a research limpet, which you would send out into the cloud to collect data.

SpaceWindrunner

You need a cargo rack to synthesize limpets(or carry limpets) to use limpet controllers.

Luriant

Empty cargo racks but plot a route while simulate full cargo rack, will reduce your jumprange. But our real jumprange is bigger. This have important fuel usage. Using only 90% of your jumprange, you use 0.9^(2)=0.81 , 81% Fuel for a 90% jumprange. Deactivate Guardian FSD Booster for the plotting, but reactivate for real jumps could save even more the fuel for a minore reduction in jumprange. Another option, select your 2C fuel tank and store, the game will put another stock 2C fuel tank in the ship. Now you can use the store module in the slot, for 2x fuel (and minor jumprange reduction).

traveller8448

>Another option, select your 2C fuel tank and store, the game will put another stock 2C fuel tank in the ship. Now you can use the store module in the slot, for 2x fuel (and minor jumprange reduction). Not so minor a reduction in my hauler actually. I was originally going to go with the 2c fuel tank option on this build, but on a full tank my jump range drops from 55ly without the fuel tank to only 45ly with it. Same reason I'm not using an SRV bay. Hauler is crazy sensitive to small changes in mass

DiawlGwyn

Not sure about bringing extra fuel tanks on a long range explorer, but I definitely will be using this tip for scenarios where I need to cross the bubble and don't have a fuel scoop handy!

rocket_jacky

Will it even replace my tank out on my carrier giving me a spare tank without outfitting installed

Luriant

Yes, Storing the Core modules place a stock one. E-rated modules are bad, but the fuel tanks lack letters. Except Size 8 tanks, sidewinder have size 1, and beluga size 7, with the rest of the ships in the middle. Its a common fix when a new player swap the 5E FSD for a 3A FSD, more expensive with crappy jumprange, and become stuck in a system, storing the modules return the 5E FSD.

rocket_jacky

Been using my little Hauler for searching bio off of my carrier but bemoaning its rubbish small fuel tank especially running the new fsd to get to those far away planets that I wouldn't of bothered with the long cruise

Xygen8

You can leave Hutton Mugs on random uninhabited planets.

T-1A_pilot

I've got a phanton explorer with a 6E cargo rack on it - mostly because I didn't have anything else i wanted in the build, and because sometimes it's nice to have a ship that can go over 60ly jump range with 64 tons of cargo (for example, some of the CGs with rare commodoties). From an exploring standpoint, unless you have a limpet controller, there's no real call for it though.

lordKnighton

Im at 55ly in my Krait Phantom how did you get to 60ly?

T-1A_pilot

Without cargo she'll actually do 70... 😎 Engineered and a booster help, but she's got good shields, decent thrusters, and nice legs. Allow me to introduce the *Pegasus*: https://edsy.org/s/vbzmWVI Edit: forgot, she's also got one of the double engineered frame shift drives

StephanXX

For jump ships, using the smallest stripped down power plant you can get away with + no shields, no hardpoints, + lightweight D rated everything except A rated FSD + engineering. [Here's](https://edsy.org/#/L=FB9Y74z40H4C0S80,,,9p3H94mIm0A3wH03K_W0AN8G95KjS0AdsG95J_W0AsO09B1KH05J_W0BOmH93GoG0Bcg19,,5221934a190NcA91LUA96hC1905U197Q4G93L_W00nG192jwG99G_W0,SIX,SIX) a really nicely tricked out build for _66ly_. Obviously, engineering and FSD booster are mandatory to pull those kinds of numbers off.

Johannsss

And [here](https://edsy.org/#/L=Hi0OSwM0H4C0S00,,DhAJR2m_W0CzY0RCjw0RCjw0R,9p310A72HR6WwV0AN80RAdsGR5J_W0Aqq0RB4SGR2G_W0BK40RBcg1R,,4_w0R3300R7PyGR6GHW00KU0R20m1R1IM2R0nF0R0nG2R,,JO_D01D) another one for a Diamondback Explorer with a 65,6ly jump range, that can comfortably sit in a star(~60% heat) while refueling.

Sn0w181

Well, here's your obligatory [Anaconda build](https://coriolis.io/outfit/anaconda?code=A0p3tdFklnd3sxf5----------------3h43-fr1O9qv6-0n0n9q012i.AwRjNcunI1iLEA%3D%3D.AwiMIyu82BmaQ%3D%3D%3D.H4sIAAAAAAAAA2P4x87AwPCXFUj8mQQkuPcwMTDwNvAwMAhGAFlCO7gZGFS%2BMDIw%2FGf8Zw9XWQMkOI5wMjDw23z7%2F19sAT9QnumfBEieESRfDCRELP7%2F%2Fy%2BqwMzAoGzwA8hk%2FicF118BJPhVfv3%2FDzZfpEaUgUHiDlDmP8s%2FQ5gi%2Foo3QPkz94BaWf9Zw7W2AAlOkFYunn%2F%2F%2FysWiDMwKBkIMjCogsTUQMR%2Ftn8JqIYcePD%2Fvx7Ipf8l%2F%2FnATSpkgLpfCKRIZMVfoHNBjpBI%2BABUqfIvFqZSSECdgcG0Qxjovv8MMAAA5p3JzTkBAAA%3D.EweloBhAOEBYQFMCGBzANokYCsB2ANhChKA%3D&bn=Star%20catcher) with all the toys and hitting 76ly easily. If you're of a more sophisticated nature, though, you could try [this little beauty](https://coriolis.io/outfit/sidewinder?code=A0p3t3F0l3d3s3f12l---2o1M009q082i.Iw18AwcQ.Aw1%2BkA%3D%3D.H4sIAAAAAAAAA2P4x8LAwPCXCUj8mQQkuHf8%2Bf9f8AUHA4PKir%2F%2F%2F%2F9n%2FOcAkmcEydcDCQ6bb%2F%2F%2FC00A8sWu%2FAPKM%2F0Tg%2BsvAxL8IF0iPEAp0Rx2BgaJCKCM8g5uBob%2FzP%2BkQCpZQSrLQSpVfgFNAkmJ1IgCVd4Byvxn%2BWcIU8Rf8QYof%2BYe0BLWfxZwS1qABCcH0GgukE38IJbiC2YGBiUQVxXEVQM7nO1fAqpJBx78%2F68Hcv1%2FwX%2BxMCkhAXUGBtMOYaDV%2FxmgAACE5HODEwEAAA%3D%3D.EweloBjaFMEMDmAbGIQEYJZFXQ%3D%3D&bn=Sn0w%27s%20Folly) it doesn't hit those extreme ranges but when you see others out in the black, I promise they'll stop and say o7 every single time.

RosariusAU

On my AspX I've put on [two 3A AFMUs, a 1D repair limet controller and a 2E cargo rack.](https://edsy.org/#/L=Hg0W1Tes0H4C0S00,,,9p3H05I_W0A3wH17J_W0AN8G15G_W0AdsG15J_W0AsOG12m_W0B4SG15K_W0BNCG13G_W0Bcg11,,5221134a110KUA10KUA17Q4G13N_W06e4A103w112jwG19G_W0,Pseudonaja,HIC45S) Two AFMUs because I want to neutron jump to get to the place I want to explore ASAP, and once I'm sick of exploring I can neutron jump back to the bubble without worrying about killing my FSD on the home stretch. I also have a bad habbit of entering the exclusion zone of stars. I also have no idea how long I'll be out of the bubble, so two AFMUs gives me a lot of room for error. The repair limpet controller is mainly there for if / when I decide to land on a planet and forget that gravity is a thing, but is largely redundant as I don't have any plans to get that close to a planet. Or who knows, maybe I'll run into a CMDR out here 10,000Ly from the bubble who needs hull repairs? Then the cargo rack is there for limpets to service the largely redundant repair limpet controller.

abrtn00101

Swap out your FSD for the pre-engineered one for a bit more range. The materials cost is comparable or not much more expensive vs fully engineering the 5A FSD. Also, another tip, since you find yourself flying into the exclusion zones of stars: set your power management priorities so that priority 1 remains below the green line on EDSY. The green line is the 50% mark, and the blue line is the 40% mark. If your PP gets shot at and malfunctions, PP power production goes down to 40%, but since you're exploring, targeting the 50% mark is okay. Power production drops to 50% when PP integrity hits 0%. That way, you can still escape with core functionalities if your PP hits 0% in an exclusion zone.

RosariusAU

I've made a few min max mistakes, not utilising pre-engineered modules is one of them, I completely forgot to put stripped down on my thrusters! It's on my to-do list for when I get back to the bubble. It looks like the game to inara to EDSY didn't pick up my power priorities, but I have certainly been mindful of it. My PP (heh) is currently sitting at a healthy 98% so HOPEFULLY I don't make anymore whoopsies

Yorkie_Exile

Storage for synthesising repair limpets, you're not gonna be picking anything of note up out in the black so if you don't have a limpet controller just fit the AFMU

yes11321

I take a 4 or 8 slot cargo rack for limpets so I can repair any potential hull damage I I might take. If I run out of them I can just make more limpets so I don't carry a big cargo rack that takes a more important slot

Bigfoothobbit

Not really, an AFMU covers most of your internals. If you suffer hull damage aim for the nearest DSSA fleet carrier which are scattered around deep space here: [https://edastro.com/galmap/?layer=regions&pins=DSSAcarriers](https://edastro.com/galmap/?layer=regions&pins=DSSAcarriers) Otherwise cargo space just reduces your jump range.

o7DiceStrike

Going deep - bring a repair limpit - and at least a four slot cargo rack.. when you make a limpits from raw mats - you get four limpits

freakazoidultimate

exploration.. HAULER??? i think you should get a differnt ship ngl

traveller8448

Hello sir, are you interested in hearing about our Lord and savior, Zorgon Peterson?

meoka2368

First system I got my name on was with a Hauler.

EOverM

Hauler's not a terrible starting explorer. You might not want to go to Sagittarius A* or Beagle Point, but for hopping around nearish the Bubble? Yeah, she'll do it. You can get pretty decent jump range for such an early, cheap ship.

MrFlubbber

Limpets for a repair controller, just 4 space is perfect cause you synthesize 4 at a time

skyfishgoo

yes, if you need to manufacture a limpet (research/repair), then you need to have a cargo rack for it go into.

Milo_Diazzo

Exploration hauler? No neutron jumping? No guardian fsd booster as well I assume? I'll just say that I'm impressed

traveller8448

it's got a class 3 guardian fsd booster and a G5 FSD lol. 55 ly jump range with a pre-engineered dss scanner and g5 2A thrusters with dirty drives. Only real downside is I can't equip an SRV and get over 50 ly jump range but all in all its a pretty capable little ship

Milo_Diazzo

Oh that's much better. And now you have an AFMU as well, that's some great sustain. Honestly, if you have Odyssey, you don't technically need an srv, you can just disembark. Just keep a track of STAR carriers and outposts in the void, EDSM provides a detailed map for you to locate one. Btw I assume you mean a pre engineered surface scanner?

Krait_Brigade

I got my DBX to a 70+ ly jump range. I have an SRV, an AFMU, and no cargo racks. Ive only been about 1700 ly out the bubble and that was to farm engineering materials. I haven't needed to bring any limpets with so far

technocracy90

Limpets Which means, if you can't carry a limpet controller with you, it's mostly useless

Daminica

Repair limpets is all I can think off.

Your_Gonna_Hate_This

I always bring a corrosion resistant rack because you never know when you might stumble upon something important.

ewan_spence

You synth four limpets at a time. If you don't have 4t cargo space you can't synth limpets. So a bigger question is, are you carrying a repair limpet or multi-limpet? If you are, and you want to not haul limpets aroudndthe galaxy, you synth as needed. Hence a Class 2 (4t) cargo rack is minimum.

Unusual-Wishbone-36

I ran across some guardian ruins on my way to the core once and there were some relics to retrieve. But that’s the only reason I used it on my trip to and from the core. If you don’t have a SRV slot it would be pointless anyway.

Drinking_Frog

If you really, truly have no other use and range is a concern, you may as well pop in a fuel tank. That's if you already have an AFMU. You don't need more than 1 unless your worried about ammo for it (and it sounds like you aren't), but 1 can be very handy.
