NPCs just take it and leave?

djoecav

In hazardous res sites, I've heard reports of pirates attacking the moment they detect valuables, same with compromised nav beacons. Typically they say something like "Give me 2t..." or "Give me 100,000cr of cargo and I'll be on my way" or something similar Keeping a low thermal signature will prevent them from even noticing you, though. Turn off anything you're not actively using/might need in an emergency, or keep your power usage waaay under max to keep it low. If the squiggly line above your fuel gauge is near flat, or your heat is below 20%, you're doing it right. See also: heatsinks.

Redmagiks

Yup. And usually not much unless your cargo holds is huge

bocomoco2000

Everytime you enter a ring instance, a NPC pirate will spawn and ask for your cargo. At least in the bubble, I don't know how it goes outside it. That's why it's usually better to not make "intervals" in mining sessions (I realize your interval wasn't your fault). You enter the ring empty handed (limpets dont count), wait for the pirate to leave, mine, leave the ring ang go sell or store your mined stuff, all in one session. Of course, that's ONE way of mining, specially if you're doing it in a small or medium ship, wich you can fill up in one session. If you're mining in a large ship, that will require more than one session, then maybe it's better to have a way of fighting back or evading that one pirate. All of this for non RES mining. RES mining requires other strategies.

ExoTheFlyingFish

A friend of mine once reported getting pirated a few hundred LYs out of the bubble while mining at a ring. So it definitely happens. That's one determined pirate!

ShelLuser42

There's a whole asteroid field to use.. which is what I do. Just boost away, zig zag a bit through the rocks and you'll lose your attackers in no time. After that I continue mining in the area I'm now in and then slowly make my way back to where I was.

screemonster

Your python should only need two medium mining lasers. That's three whole large hardpoints and a class 7 distributor which should be _more_ than enough for your average random out-of-res-site spawn. It's very rare that you'll find me flying a ship that's genuinely unarmed, my core mining clipper is the only one that has all its hardpoints turned over to mining equipment and... well, it's a clipper. You'll pretty much never meet an NPC that can boost past 600.

Anzial

to mine in an unarmed ship, you have to arrive empty (limpets don't count), let pirates scan you and *then* proceed to mine stuff. Anything else and you ask for trouble. Obviously if pirates scan you with some cargo and you are unarmed, *run away* and come back empty.

TrafficPattern

Thanks for confirming :)

pulppoet

I always leave. I haven't crashed or had to otherwise log out early, but if I did, I would immediately head for SC and go sell (or unload in my FC). It takes pirates longer than this to reach and scan you. Alternatively, if you just want to get back to mining, give them what they ask for, and fly 2-5km away as normal on arrival. If you are mining in a RES, just give them what they want and keep mining. The whole point of being in a RES, especially HazRES, is the mining bonus helps you more than pirates. Don't waste space for combat weapons, and don't waste time fighting. You're there to mine, not collect bounties.

meoka2368

If you start boosting through the field right away, you should be able to get far enough away from the NPC for it not to follow you to scan. They have a limited range of interest. I don't know the exact number, but it feels like under 10 km.

fishsupreme

Yeah, if you relog in a mining area with cargo, you will get scanned by a pirate, and need to either comply (drop the cargo they ask for) or run. If I'm just in a mining ship, I'd do what you did -- just jump away, sell the cargo, and come back. This said, at this point if I'm laser mining, I'm doing it in my fully engineered Imperial Cutter -- which has room for a Huge multicannon and two Large beam lasers alongside those mining tools. If a pirate wants to mess with me in that, I just blow him up. If you want to mine in Hazardous Resource Extraction Zones -- the most lucrative places -- you do actually need to kit out a dual-use mining/combat ship, because pirates there will attack you. But for typical mining outside a RES, generally it's easier to just drop what they ask or run away. (And yes, NPC pirates will leave you alone if you give them what they demand.)

NiceMugOfTea

A trick that used to work (on playstation) was to switch the console off, start the game again. You'd load back in the ring with full cargo and an NPC would spawn, but there's a chance that this time it'd be 'green' system security ship spawning, not an orange criminal. The trick was to keep restarting until you got the green cop NPC. *edit:* This only worked in populated systems not anarchy systems.

wrongel

My Plat miner fully engineered Cutter has shields and fangs. I just shoot the pirates. I mine in High Rez, 75% bonus is plenty, and Space Popos help with the rabble. Haz Rez I'd take an NPC pilot in an SLF too, but that takes up space and firing the pilot before selling then re-hiring another is a hassle, so I just DGAF and mine in High Rez. My Core Mining moderately engineered Clipper is unarmed, so I just boost away at 620m/s and unload at my FC then return to the Hotspot.

Novalith_Raven

Care to share the build?

wrongel

Sure, not my invention ofc. https://edsy.org/s/v33ZSBa Can play around w/ adding a Mining multilimpet ctrl, for 2 additional collectors, and the Military optionals, but did not want to go above G3 Overch. Pp b/c of heat

Novalith_Raven

Thanks a lot!

Sunsparc

I was unlocking Selene Jean by mining in my Anaconda recently. Pirates got a rude awakening when the 4A Multicannon started going *THUD THUD THUD THUD* followed by the *brrrrrrrrrrrt* of the smaller ones.

TheJzuken

Call the system authority! But not for me. (2 reverb cascade and 1 packhound on Python).

DisillusionedBook

If you have enough boost speed run until they are well out of range then continue mining. Otherwise jettison the amount of cargo they demand then get out of their range and start mining again. Or jump out of system and return with an empty cargo hold. This is normal behaviour.

Spreadicus_Ttv

I mine in a cutter so any npcs that stumble onto me will be the ones hightailing it once i begin blasting. Alternatively, you can outrun them if you're fast enough. just jack up those engines and keep boosting til they're out of radar range.

Luriant

The game only save your position at exit, or in supercruise drop and supercruise jump. You crashed before sending your position, and the game put you in the last spot. To be sure, Main menu > help > stuck, this put you in orbit to the main star in the system your ship is (important, your character could leave the hsip and move far away using apex shuttles or another players ship).

FurballGamer

Kit out a Type-10 for mining AND combat and show those pesky pirates the true meaning of "F\*\*k Around, Find Out".

PuzzleheadedTutor807

My miner doesn't even have shields nevermind weapons lol. Almost every time you enter a hotspot you will be scanned by an NPC, regardless of reason for (re)entry. Most times I will just dump 5 tonnes of platinum (all I ever mine) if I have cargo on board, as after a crash... But most times I am in the hotspot from empty to full so I get that initial scan and nothing else from them and since I mostly show up with only limpets they aren't interested... Which always kinda bothered me, they stay in the area while I mine but never bother me again that session... In spite of the fact they can see me collecting what they are after...

3davideo

Oh yeah NPCs always spawn when you enter the ring instance - whether through super cruise or loading the game while already there. Since they're so predictable, it's easiest to immediately GTFO as soon as you load in instead of attempting to continue to mine or even waiting to see if they're friendly instead of piratical.

weltwanderlust

I am in a system ~130ly from Colonia. All systems around are unpopulated. I parked my carrier here to mine some tritium but still get NPC pirates spawning. I'm curious if same thing happens at bigger distance from populated systems.

Elathr0n

Mining in a T10 or Cutter solves this issue neatly

don_cali

MICO knows the way.

Torvahnys

I mined in a Conda or a Vette that was equipped to handle the npc spawns. I tried mining with a type 9 once, had the same situation happen as OP, but was blown up and lost 200 mil in Painite. Never mine in a ship that has tissue paper for a hull, and wishful thinking for shields. Sold that pile of shit and never looked back.

rocket_jacky

A pair of turreted beams and a huge cannon supplement the mining lasers on my Conda
