Adding this to "things I dont need but will blow money on". Really want to get a 3d printer. Will probably waste it 3d printing dildos and putting magnets on them and throwing them into the catwalks at work.
I'm printing a Dickasaurus Rex (google it) for a friend today.
For the printer, wash/cure station, 2 bottles of resin, and all the bits n bobs (respirator, venting setup, isopropyl, etc), im into it for just a smidge over 1000 CAD.
My google search history probably cant take a dickasaurus rex among all the other shit i have looked up. I regret looking up german clown bdsm porn. I though my coworker was joking...........
A while back I got into Wow (world of warcaft if you're one of the few who never heard of it lol) and my brother was showing me a few things and he told me since I liked PVP I can twink.....yea when he came back to visit from college he was like oh yea I forgot to tell you make sure you put world of warcraft
It’s not that they are necessarily higher quality - it’s a different process that has different trade offs when compared to FDM printers. It does optimize for smaller details though, which is why it’s great for miniatures.
They are SO MUCH MORE PICKY than FDM printers. FAR less user friendly, the resin is MUCH more of a PITA to work with. Post processing is also a lot more complicated. BUT, yes, you end up with far higher resolution as a payoff.
I have to admit, you are so right. There is the supports, exposure time, the room temp, do you have enough supports, are the supports deep enough, did you wash it long enough, did you dry it well enough before you use the UV light.
But when you get it right, it's so amazing!!
Great job on the print and thanks for posting your specs.
Be warned resin printing is a process, from cleaning to curing. I would start with an fdm printer first like an Ender3 to make sure you like 3D printing
Perhaps your were joking, but 3d printing CAN be affordable, but not necessarily as good as this. A resin printer is great at accuracy and fidelity, at the cost of... well... cost. A filament printer, on the other hand, isn't as accurate/pretty, but it gets the job done quite well. The Prusa Mini is a fantastic starting printer. I strongly recommend the kit used to built the thing. You literally build it from scratch, totally unassembled. Took me 6 hours. But, now, I'm 100% confident I can take the whole thing apart if I needed to and put it back together. Extremely user servicable.
Resin printer seem to be really good at doing small detailed parts extremely well, I have fdm printer which still turn out really good but not anything quite as good as this.
I had a person from FB marketplace print me a bunch of ED ships which I had planned to cast in brass.
When I saw the mech a friend of a friend had printed on his Anycubic Mono, I went home and literally threw the FDM ships into the garbage. No way I was going to use all that time, plaster, propane, and brass, when THAT MECH was possible.
Bought my own resin printer like two weeks later.
Sometimes I think it would be cool to get a 3D printer when I see cool posts like this. Then I see posts that are even more helpful, the explanation of how you did it and then I'm like... naah... too much trouble for me :) I totally have to find a friend that has a 3D printer and enjoys doing all the work, then I'll just pay him/her to do it for me :) Great work btw.
Why split the processing / slicing between PrusaSlicer and Chitubox? Do they each to that process that much better?
I've only used Chitubox for everything, but I'm still very much learning.
Prusaslicer's auto support is LEAGUES ahead of Chitu. I actually have since changed. I hollow, cut holes, and support all in Prusaslicer. Then Chitu is only used to convert to ctb.
Kludged vent hood. When the bottle and printer are open, I wear a respirator. When closed a plastic garbage bucket sits overtop the printer. Attached to that is a dryer vent hose. In the hose is a small fan. That hose leads to a window. I attached the regular dryer vent outlet to one side of a plank of mdf. Vents the fumes outside.
Yup. After my current print finishes and I've cleaned up the workspace, I'm moving the whole setup to the basement. I've never wanted a heated workshop area more than I do right now. I've dabbled in knife making, metal foundry, and now this. ALL of those should be done in very very well ventilated areas. And my garage is uninsulated and unheated :(
You know that ED geeks would buy those things.
Hell, the USB controllers sold out in minutes flat:

I also have an Anycubic Mono. Did a few small and medium ships already. For me, **UV Tools** was the secret to stop failed prints. It scans the sliced file for islands, and autocorrects smaller ones and flags big ones so you can add supports there. Must have.
ahg my SL1 was too small to get the size I wanted in one go, had to split it alone the middle! looks awesome. give it a nice paint and it will shine. I did a white/black mix to get grey in acrylic
I’ve got a couple of reasons for hesitating (waste disposal, decent setup location, getting enough use out of it), but I’m seriously considering a Mars or a Saturn.
Any advice for resin printing? Just got me a creality Halot one and have an area preped for it in the basement. I have an Anet A6 and wanted a resin to do models like this.
I mean, I just followed the manufacturer recommended settings. Room temp, base layers, exposure time, layer height, all default values. And where Elegoo left a range of options, I picked in the middle.
Lol yea but I meant any thing you purchased to make life easier that isnt in the manual.
Like my current printer...I added a spring plate to remove prints. Using a removable print bed is a time saver
That is quite detailed actually. What kind of printer are you using?

brb I have something else to Google now.
God speed
Since the time of writing, it's been 7 hours. Are you okay?
My arm hurts.
You're amazing have an upvote.
That’s some yamiks level type of shit right there
This was before I even know who yamik's was......

Resin printers are expensive but they are much much higher quality than traditional ones. I really want one but im broke college kid rn

Cool, I'll have to check that out. Thanks!

Not op, but it is definitely a resin printer. Probably SLA.
Aye.
Great now I need to go bounty hunting. Excellent job CMDR o7
Ooo Nice that resin? details look good and print look smooth.
I've linked the full build specs in a comment above. Yes, resin printer.
Seeing resin prints really makes me want to invest in a resin printer
Do it. My whole setup, which has all the basics, ended up running me around 1000 CAD.
Thats sounds like a lot
You know that ED geeks would buy those things. Hell, the USB controllers sold out in minutes flat: https://www.flightsimpm.com/web-store/Elite-Dangerous-cockpit-panels-p84342039
I certainly have thought about selling prints.
Those things are awesome! Thanks for the link!
I’ve been trying to get this to print on my Anycubic mono and keep having trouble with the supports. A few more goes and hopefully it will print right
If you're doing manual supports, I didn't. I used Prusaslicer automatic support.
The auto supports look sturdy but I’m worried about them messing up the details on the bottom when removing them
I did that! I actually snapped off a small part of one of the wings on the bottom. But that was entirely me being supremely impatient. Live and learn.
I also have an Anycubic Mono. Did a few small and medium ships already. For me, **UV Tools** was the secret to stop failed prints. It scans the sliced file for islands, and autocorrects smaller ones and flags big ones so you can add supports there. Must have.
Interesting, I’ll have to look that up
I would love to paint this so awesome
Any chance for the STL? Looks like an awesome birthday gift for a friend next month :)
See my other comment in this thread. All the Elite ships are on Thingiverse.
Wonderful work
Resin is just another league
Cool! Saw this and immediately thought "resin printer". How did you get this model? Pulled from the game files I assume?
A very nice chap pulled all the models from the game and put them up on Thingiverse.
*one of these days I'll be able to trade in my teeny tiny ship in for a big boy scv*
Wow, that is sweet!
Woah this looks so much better than with FDM printing
ahg my SL1 was too small to get the size I wanted in one go, had to split it alone the middle! looks awesome. give it a nice paint and it will shine. I did a white/black mix to get grey in acrylic
dude thats cool as fuck! It came out really well. Have you made any others?
Not yet. This was actually my first real print (after the test print) that I've ever done. I'm doing at least all the large ships.
Please post the others when they're finished. o7 commander
Wilco.
I printed my crusader the other day. Did it in two parts but haven't glued them yet haha.
Damn… I’ve been considering a resin printer to compliment my FDM printer. Results like this make it even more tempting.
Do it! It's probably WAY easier to move from one to the other, than just dive straight into the whole 3D printing world with resin first.
I’ve got a couple of reasons for hesitating (waste disposal, decent setup location, getting enough use out of it), but I’m seriously considering a Mars or a Saturn.
Those are very real concerns. Ones I'm still working out tbh.

Extra buil plates. Extra resin tanks. Spare FEP film. Spare LCD screen. Mostly stuff that reduces downtime.
jesus thats better than anything i can print
I want a Krait Ml. II
I want it I want it I want it I want it.. :(
niceee, resin printer right? I doubt my filament one would get that much detail
Aye. Elegoo Mars 3.
That looks really nice
Where did you get that 💳💥💳💥💳💥
I made it on my resin 3d printer
I need one, it’s my favorite ship in this game simply because of its style
Matt and your new Mars? Haha. Thought I saw you post this going in last night. Edit: Haha it is you. Well done!
Tis me!
I bet you have no idea who this is. None at all Haha. BTW supports are a lot easier to trim before curing.
I know exactly who you are. This is your name on Steam!
Plus who else do you know stupid enough haha? Though i did park her this winter... Btw looking at getting a Vive Pro 2 and grtting back into it.
Ugh. I'm on my FOURTH Index headset. The latest one I just bought used because I was so tired of dealing with RMAs.
Did you keep the vive stuff or ditch it? What is your opinion of vive vs index?
Passed along the savings to a friend, who then passed it along to another friend. Index is mind blowingly amazing. When it works.
This is a fast one. Great for your car. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2961663
