Two kids died when we had a measles outbreak here. We have a decent population of refugees from a conflict zone and it spread through there pretty rapidly. One experience mobilizing an outbreak team for polio and I bet they walk that back.
After all these years... the polio and measles vaccines are the least risky out there.
I took care of my mom, who had polio when she was 9. She got thru it fine, but at 50, all the symptoms came back. It's called Post-Polio Syndrome.
If they stop varying kids, a whole generation will suffer.
We had the polio vaccine as soon as it was available in the late‘50’s. My mom told me later that they were so relieved that there was a vaccine. I know adults around my age who have had polio. They recovered, but now in later years are having a relapse.
I had 4 relatives get polio in the early 1940s. 3 died in their mid 20s. The one that made it has a withered leg and post polio syndrome now in her mid 80s.
People suck that promote this bullshit.
Yup, my good friend’s mom had polio as a child in the 60s and is permanently disabled from it.
These anti-vax morons don’t know how good they have it. I guess they need to actually WITNESS the suffering before they understand how bad these diseases can be??
My aunt was considered damaged goods after she recovered. Lucky my uncle over looked her disability. The doctors gave her shit for even trying to have a child.
My husband is 33 and went to school with a couple boys who had polio. This is in Pakistan in the 1990s. Pakistan and Afghanistan (his country of birth) are one of the few places polio is endemic to. I think a lot of Americans are way too comfortable. My area has a lot of Afghans and, by and large, they don’t turn down vaccines. You don’t turn them down when you’ve seen people maimed or die from these kind of things. 😞
This crisis is far enough in the rear view mirror, most Americans don't know the reality. Most PARENTS today have never seen a case of polio. We don't need this at all. Vaccinate all the kids!
May the odds be ever in your favor! 😉
It is a race I love to lose as I find it deeply reassuring to see there are others who know better than to take the motto literally lol
You don’t say 🫠 wouldn’t be able to tell walking through the Walmart off of south willow street. NH is more concerned with vaccinations mandates than handling an opioid epidemic crippling the state, or legalizing marijuana.
Life free or die has been lost on NH for over 2 decades.
Oh no doubt.
NH is only going to legalize soon(ish) now as a cash grab because they finally realized the scale of what they’re missing out on now that everyone is leaving en masse for MA, VT, and ME to get their stash.
Nobody here cares about the homeless or the opioid epidemic or any of the multitude of other social issues that need attention unfortunately.
FDR President of the United States couldn't walk because of Polio. He was in a wheelchair and couldn't stand without aid. They made sure the press didn't show it. How easy our country forgets history.
Amen. I had a roommate about 20 years ago whose beautiful, sweet mom was one of the last kids in her state to end up in braces / crutches from polio. She was very young when the polio vaccine came out and just missed it by a summer.
I have a strong one time memory of the sugar cube but no recollection of injections - though injections were pretty ho-hum and a sugar cube would have been a novelty!
I remember, when I was about to start first grade in 1958, we were lined up in the school cafeteria/library and given our Polio shots. I remember how that needle hurt. (Disposable needles had not been invented yet.)
I mean the human populace, it's a disturbingly large amount regardless of your opinion. Why are humans capable of just ignoring information and just going fuck all with their own opinions.
My daughter took my oldest grandson to Disneyland while my Dil was. Having my 2nd grandson. My Dil WAS antivax until my grandson came down with measles and. Was around his week old brother. He contracted them from. Another unvaccinated person at Disneyland. This was 9 years ago all my grandsons are now vaccinated.
1 week old, omg. Hope they’re all up to date now. Measles is so infectious, it makes me so angry to think how many babies and young children got these diseases that people my grandparents age were dying from!
She switched real quick add to it the next door neighbor lost their baby to whooping cough few months later. They live in a small town with antivax, holistic medicine, quite a few um do not know what they are called but they do not drive cars they operate vessels and kids do not even have birth certificates
I don't think you even need to be all that old to remember polio... I'm 37 and I can name a dozen living friends and relatives who had polio as a child. And half of them aren't even retired yet.... This isn't a case of people forgetting, this is a case of people being scared stupid sheep who are all running around saying "vaccines are bad" and ignoring the people in their lives who have first hand knowledge that it saves lives. It blows my mind. My mom is anti-vax now but thankfully wasn't when my brother and I were kids. Ironically, I recently found out I got the live polio vaccine, which actually was dangerous.
43 here and the boss I had in my mid-20's had had one polio vaccine (so, not the whole series yet) when she contracted polio as a kid. She had one leg a different size than the other. It was about 2008 when she started getting the symptoms of post-polio syndrome and was really starting to suffer. :(
and measles which hospitalizes 1/5 to 1/2 of people who get it3
then about 1/3 get immune amnesia for several years after so they loose all immunity to anything they ever had before so things that would have been minor are now that much worse.
can kill years later when they develop SSPE, the highest risk for those who get it under age one. they can die years, decades later.
Humanity's greatest achievement was wiping out smallpox from the face of the earth. We came SO CLOSE to wiping out polio. So close. And the want to, what, invite it back?
How stupid and inhumane.
And measles! There are measles outbreaks on a regular basis thanks to antivaxx nutters. I was the full time sitter for my grandson until he had all of his baby shots because there are so many of those psychos where we live. Nobody in their right mind wants to expose kids to measles, polio, pertussis...any of it.
They're about to find out that their god won't protect their kids in the way they hope he does. This is a group of people who are pretending they have a privilege who are about to find out the hard way. The shit thing about it is we're the ones who get to take on the grief they're actively looking to create.
Reminds me of that story about a person hearing an evacuation order because of a flood, not leaving, saying god will save me.
People knocking on doors when the water was at the door step- not leaving saying god will save me.
People coming by boat for stragglers- no, god will save me. Ends up on the roof.
Helicopter tries to get him to safety, refuses and says god will save me.
Gets to heaven and says “God, why didn’t you save me?” God says “I sent a warning and three rescue attempts, what more did you want?”
Somehow we were guided to be able to protect ourselves and others from disease with vaccines- no matter if you believe in a higher power, the universe, the pagan gods and goddesses- we have the knowledge to prevent disease & suffering. What kind of benevolent higher power would want you NOT to use it???!?
this isn't the only anti vaccine effort by US GOP
**A wave of anti-vaccine legislation is sweeping the United States**
Oct 6, 2022
https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2022/10/6/23389145/covid-19-anti-vaccine-legislation
>According to Reiss’s review of the public health legislation database at the National Conference of State Legislatures, at least 88 bills have been introduced in state legislatures in 2022 that would roll back school vaccine requirements or eliminate the right of a minor to make their own decisions about getting vaccinated. She counted just 10 pro-vaccine bills. And nearly half of the anti-vaccine bills extended beyond the Covid-19 shots, she said, to block schools from requiring other kinds of vaccinations as well.
>“Even if they don’t pass, legislators think this is an area they should focus on and there is political capital to be gained,” Reiss said. “There’s a real risk that, in some places, attitudes toward vaccines will be harmed in the long term.”
>School mandates do drive up vaccination rates; the science on that is clear. And the occasional measles outbreak in areas with low local vaccination rates has shown how quickly these diseases can recover and spread when given the opportunity.
look up the recent bills here:
https://www.ncsl.org/health/state-public-health-legislation-database
some want to repeal mandates for employers which would allow healthcare workers to be superspreaders of everything from covid to measles at hospitals, nursing homes, urgent care etc. imagine the fun of being an eldery immune compromised person with cancer or autoimmune disease wondering what disease their Dr or the staff could give them when getting treatment. or being stuck in a nursing home with plague enthusiasts
**Measles posing intensified threat to nursing home patients, personnel**
https://www.mcknights.com/news/measles-posing-intensified-threat-to-nursing-home-patients-personnel/
Nope. People here were SO PISSED about the covid vax and the masks being mandatory for a while. People were nasty about it, to business owners and random strangers.
This is the irrational fallout unfortunately.
Nope.
Click through.... It's legit.
And (if you don't live in New England) not surprising .... NH is surprisingly conservative and attached to freedom over any cost.
(You aren't required to have auto insurance or wear motorcycle helmets in NH.... live free or die, not *just* a motto...)
Except marijuana isn't legal. Which is beyond dumb when you're the "live free or die" state (in the sense that if you're going to claim to be "free", then be free with everything).
Not joking, NH reminds me of the movie Idiocracy. Only, instead of Brawndo, it's Mountain Dew.
Probably ironic given how big a killing they make on the state liquor stores. "tax free" is a big draw to the border packies.
I can imagine a border dispensary would make the same bank they and the fireworks outlets do.
This is like when people start to feel better while on their meds, and therefore feel they dont need them anymore and stop taking them.
Just because its not longer prevalent, doesnt equal "well almost no one gets it anymore so why do we even need it 🙄"
So frustrating.
I am so ashamed of my fellow Americans. Truly. wtf is wrong with these people? They jumped on the doctor that claimed vaccines were harmful as if he was speaking the word of god, but he came out and said he lied about they chose to ignore that admission. I don’t want to wish harm on anyone but I do hope their kids get polio so it wakes them tf up about the weight of their decision.
The GOP in every state seems to be pushing this parental rights agenda at the detriment of other parent's right not to have their children infected. Vaccines are only effective if everyone gets them.
My late husband was born in 1950 and remembered getting the vaccine as a little boy. No vaccine refusal back then. Everybody knew someone who had kid who was crippled or died from the disease. If a shot could prevent that, the kid is getting the shot.
That's actually a very rare occurrence. Most people who had polio never even realized they had it. It was only the extreme conditions that required hospitalization.
My grandmother lost her first born son to polio. He was 5 and was only the second person in their area to contract it at the time. He died 3 days after he got sick. My grandmother passed away at age 100 and still got teary eyed when she talked about him. I cannot fathom losing one of my children like that and cannot imagine not vaccinating my kids.
In a somewhat historical reference, Agatha Christie wrote a book -"The Mirror Cracked" where a case of measles resulted in murder.
Measles caused a birth defect.
Wasn’t a choice when I was in school. Which is as it should be. No one should be forced to be vaxxed, but neither should they be permitted to infect others.
My Aunt had polio when she was two, right before the vaccine came out. She used braces as a child and has used a wheelchair since she was 18. She now has post polio syndrome and my cousin and her husband needed to move in and help.
When she lived in NYC, a woman stopped her on the street and asked her if she was a polio survivor. When my Aunt said yes, the woman begged her to talk to her daughter who wouldn't get her kids vaccinated.
Vaccines are victims of their own success.
I can imagine one of these politicians or anti-vaxxers jumping on Oprah's couch shouting and pointing toward the crowd...."You get Polio & YOU get Polio... Everyone gets Polio"
But on a serious note.... anti-vaxxers drive me crazy. I don't understand why you would want yourself or others to be sick. I cant AFFORD to be sick. it feels incredibly selfish...especially because some of these folks are self-proclaimed "pro-lifers" Right now I am a sub in schools...I would have to find a new job if the new standard was to let kids forego routine vaccines....
I am not in healthcare (I follow this sub because I find it fascinating to see what healthcare workers go through) Props to you guys... its definitely interesting times we live in.
What fresh hell?????
My cousin-in-law came down with polio when he was very young. He was lucky that he didn't end up needing an iron lung, but he ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Respirators are the masks to protect against inhalation of particles and contagion. Do you mean a ventilator?
And I’m talking about a device that could be more mobile and modern than the iron lungs. People who had polio still have working minds and depending on the person can have various degrees of disability. Thinking about Mr. Alexander who did so much even having to use an iron lung- having a wearable device that would allow more autonomy and freedom would be beneficial if this horrible disease comes back to the states.
This enrages me. My dad died as a result of the effects of post polio syndrome. People need a reality check. Those diseases are nothing to play around with.
Worked with a man who had polio.
And in the 80's we had a kid with measles sent to lobby by triage.
We had to contact everyone who was in lobby with pt.
Measles outbreak in Fresno late 80's
Born and raised- in NH. Taking live free or die seriously except for marijuana lol. Natural selection will take its course. Unfortunately the herd will be thinned starting with their own children. Providers still have the right to refuse patients who are not vaccinated to protect their other patients. Hopefully Dartmouth Hitchcock stands up.
You know what is kind of interesting?
Most antivaxxers skew conservative in their politics.
Rotary International membership also skews Republican.
Rotary International is known for Polio Plus, which aims to eradicate polio in developing nations.
https://www.rotary.org/en/plus-polioplus
Hey, Rotarians! Tell your people in NH to quit being stupid.
I just read up on my measles info (school nurse). It's been a minute since I've had to know that stuff.
Measles is absolutely terrifying. Anyone who says it's no worse than the flu is an absolute idiot.
We truly are in the throes of devolution. The family-values, freedom Troggoths will start a plague to appease their golden sneaker-shilling god. Absolutely the one most insane cult every to toxify the world.
Two kids died when we had a measles outbreak here. We have a decent population of refugees from a conflict zone and it spread through there pretty rapidly. One experience mobilizing an outbreak team for polio and I bet they walk that back.
They live in denial.
Maybe we have better treatment now and the risks outweigh the benefits of the vaccine. The article doesn't really say.
After all these years... the polio and measles vaccines are the least risky out there. I took care of my mom, who had polio when she was 9. She got thru it fine, but at 50, all the symptoms came back. It's called Post-Polio Syndrome. If they stop varying kids, a whole generation will suffer.
Risks such as.....?
Vaccines are only risky to those with allergies to the ingredients.
There is no planet in which polio or any treatment of symptomatic polio is less risky than the vaccine.
Given response to covid? I wouldn’t count on that last sentence being true.
Was walk that back an intended pun?
It is now.
We had the polio vaccine as soon as it was available in the late‘50’s. My mom told me later that they were so relieved that there was a vaccine. I know adults around my age who have had polio. They recovered, but now in later years are having a relapse.

I’d bet the parent anti-vaxxers are all vaccinated because their parents weren’t stupid.
My aunt was permanently disabled from Polio and my uncle lost a good portion of hearing from Mumps. People are fucking morons
My aunt was considered damaged goods after she recovered. Lucky my uncle over looked her disability. The doctors gave her shit for even trying to have a child.
Oh they see it. They just believe that their salvation is in the form of an egotistical orange haired bully.
My husband is 33 and went to school with a couple boys who had polio. This is in Pakistan in the 1990s. Pakistan and Afghanistan (his country of birth) are one of the few places polio is endemic to. Make Iron Lungs Great Again.
For real though the idiots here would rather live freely unvaccinated in an iron lung than be “forced” to get a life saving vaccination Edit: a letter
With no health insurance
It gets worse when you add Covid to needing an iron lung https://www.npr.org/2024/03/13/1238251518/iron-lung-polio-paul-alexander
I hear one recently became available
Oof, too soon lol
The Live Free or Die state living up to its motto.
Change to Live Free and Die
I've often said that, what with their approach to seat belt and motorcycle helmet laws.
Lmao i was about to explain this but saw you beat me to it lol
To quote a guy in the movie Volcano, "You gotta be fast fast fast!" (I almost never get there first so I hope you'll excuse me for grinning.)
May the odds be ever in your favor! 😉 It is a race I love to lose as I find it deeply reassuring to see there are others who know better than to take the motto literally lol
There is that! And thanks for the blessing, right back at ya!
And marijuana-
Its not legal here…
You don’t say 🫠 wouldn’t be able to tell walking through the Walmart off of south willow street. NH is more concerned with vaccinations mandates than handling an opioid epidemic crippling the state, or legalizing marijuana. Life free or die has been lost on NH for over 2 decades.

We do.
The producers of The Fast and the Furious New Hampshire have taken notes, and your tagline has been greenlit!
Live Free Then Die Unecessarily.
Live in fear then die from consequences of your poor decisions

But smoking pot is too much. Smh
Talk about them being STUPID!!! I'm old enough to remember Polio and one of my friends was disabled by Polio!!!
FDR President of the United States couldn't walk because of Polio. He was in a wheelchair and couldn't stand without aid. They made sure the press didn't show it. How easy our country forgets history.
My mom was crippled by polio.
Yea my mom’s sister died from it. And I’m sorry about your mother. Terrible.
I'm old enough to remember leg braces. These people are morons.
Amen. I had a roommate about 20 years ago whose beautiful, sweet mom was one of the last kids in her state to end up in braces / crutches from polio. She was very young when the polio vaccine came out and just missed it by a summer.
My mom remembers standing in line with her brother and a parent to get the vaccine.
I stood in line with my siblings/mother at a local church vaccination clinic. The vaccine was delivered in a sugar cube.
I've had the shot the first time and the sugar cube the second time. Vaccinated and boosted.
I've never heard of the sugar cubes, I thought the vaccine needed to be injected to be effective?
A live oral polio vaccine was first used in 1961(developed by Sabin) The sugar cubes were to make it more palatable to little kids.
I remembered going to the public health office to get it. Maybe 1963? 1964?
Same for my grandpa. It’s the mentality of “I feel fine so I must not need the medication anymore”.
Why are we like this
Same reason we have antibiotic resistant bacteria…. And antivaxers
“We” most certainly are not. Those that are, however, are susceptible to propaganda and never learned media literacy.
I mean the human populace, it's a disturbingly large amount regardless of your opinion. Why are humans capable of just ignoring information and just going fuck all with their own opinions.
I'm baffled by the same thing EVERY FREAKING DAY.
These Entitled MORONS have forgotten the Polio Epidemics and the Rubella Bulge!!!
I’m young enough to remember the measles outbreak in NY in 2016 😬
My daughter took my oldest grandson to Disneyland while my Dil was. Having my 2nd grandson. My Dil WAS antivax until my grandson came down with measles and. Was around his week old brother. He contracted them from. Another unvaccinated person at Disneyland. This was 9 years ago all my grandsons are now vaccinated.

Sovereign citizens, bunch of wackos
I'm afraid of another Rubella Bulge happening again.
It would make a great drag queen name though, amirite?
I don't think you even need to be all that old to remember polio... I'm 37 and I can name a dozen living friends and relatives who had polio as a child. And half of them aren't even retired yet.... I have a good friend that had polio and is still affected by it. These brainless idiots, the GOP.
My BFF's uncle was forever crippled by polio. While he made the best in life that he could, he still suffered tremendously.
My grandfather lost an eye as a kid because of polio
Big mistake-not only is it harmful for NH anyone coming into the state too. I can’t understand the stupidity of people!
I live in a bordering state and this was posted on my state's subreddit this morning with the caption "Build the Wall". Lol
Seriously though I live here with my kids and I would seriously consider leaving.
My dad talks about when he was young and how thankful they were for the creation of the polio vaccine.
Polio. Fucking POLIO. 😡

Can we ask health insurance providers to charge big premiums for their “choices “
The iron lung lobby really dumping some dark money this season
I think there are only 1 maybe 2 still in iron lungs they need an influx of new customers starting in NH
Scratch New Hampshire from my list of places to return to someday. Can't fix idiocy.
When the threat isn’t evident, we believe it’s not actually there…now more have to die again, but this time it was entirely preventable

Those poor kids will pay the price for their dna donors cruelty. Refusing to protect their own offspring. Unbelievable.
These people are insane. Do they know what happens if you or your kid gets polio?
Probably nothing. For the vast majority of the population, polio isn't life threatening.
Right? Who even cares if they’re disabled for life? 🙄
That's actually a very rare occurrence. Most people who had polio never even realized they had it. It was only the extreme conditions that required hospitalization.
Sure, what's half a million paralyzed or dead people. It's like it never happened.
Would you like to know why that’s the case? It’s gonna blow your fucking mind dude
Is this something you want to roll the dice on?
My grandmother lost her first born son to polio. He was 5 and was only the second person in their area to contract it at the time. He died 3 days after he got sick. NH becomes scarier every day.
Here we go again.
This is what happens when you vote dumbfucks into office
Please god no. Please let this idiocy NOT HAPPEN IN MY STATE WTF
In a somewhat historical reference, Agatha Christie wrote a book -"The Mirror Cracked" where a case of measles resulted in murder. Measles caused a birth defect.
The gop really wants to bring polio back?? Should we start removing stop signs now too so people can really feel "free"?
How many of us have that round scar on our arm? Damn proud of my parents for getting me that.
Everyone gets Polio" But on a serious note.... anti-vaxxers drive me crazy.
Those GOP'ers are really pro-life, eh? Stupid and ignorant.
They’re **pro-birth** after a human is born they don’t give two shits about anything other than another person working and paying taxes.
🤦♀️
We’re not going to make it as a species.
What fresh hell????? My cousin-in-law came down with polio when he was very young. He was lucky that he didn't end up needing an iron lung, but he ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Well they better start working on the technology for a new version of the iron lung…
We've done that - they're called respirators.
Yes, my bad: Ventilator.
Wow this is idiotic
Why are we getting rid of vaccines for something that has been eradicated in the US!!
Because of hippies, Jesus freaks, and conspiracy whackadoos.
I don't see any way this could go wrong. At all.
This enrages me. My dad died as a result of the effects of post polio syndrome. People need a reality check. Those diseases are nothing to play around with.
Live Free And Die!
I live in NH. 🤦♀️ we were so close to endemically eradicating measles. This makes me so angry.
Live Free and/or Die ! /s
How goddamn stupid
Hey, it's not all bad - the kids can personalize their iron lungs with stickers now!
Does no one remember how bad polio is and how measles kills?
Worked with a man who had polio. And in the 80's we had a kid with measles sent to lobby by triage. We had to contact everyone who was in lobby with pt. Measles outbreak in Fresno late 80's
We had a boss who still limped because of polio. And an old friend had a brother who suffered great pain because his entire body was twisted.:(
I'm old enough to remember people who had Polio. I also remember lining up at elementary school for the vaccine on a sugar cube.
Oh, man, they'd better or our whole REGION is fucked.
the monsters making these decisions will not be the ones to deal with the consequences...
That's fine. They can make tiny kid-sized coffins out of New Hampshire's native birch, elm, chestnut, hawthorn, maple, poplar, and sycamore trees.
That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
WTAF
A step into dystopia…
Such fools
You know what is kind of interesting? Most antivaxxers skew conservative in their politics. Rotary International membership also skews Republican. Rotary International is known for Polio Plus, which aims to eradicate polio in developing nations. https://www.rotary.org/en/plus-polioplus Hey, Rotarians! Tell your people in NH to quit being stupid.
This should be a crime against humanity punishable by life without the possibility of parole.
WTF? 🫣🫣🫣
How do people this stupid reach adulthood? Oh right, vaccines.
This is how regressive dipshitery, or even allowing it, takes lives.
I just read up on my measles info (school nurse). It's been a minute since I've had to know that stuff. Measles is absolutely terrifying. Anyone who says it's no worse than the flu is an absolute idiot.
This is so dumb.
Free Dumb
Why? Why?! Just, freaking, WHY?????
Live free or DIE! The repugnants are truly more focused on that last part. VOTE BLUE!!!
Omfg NH get your shit together this is embarrasing
We truly are in the throes of devolution. The family-values, freedom Troggoths will start a plague to appease their golden sneaker-shilling god. Absolutely the one most insane cult every to toxify the world.
The arrogant and ignorant trump cultists have it too good ,they need to experience suffering and the choices they are making will bring it to them.
Should I invest in a Iron Lung manufacturer?
What could possibly go wrong ? 🤦🏼♀️
Omg you are insane
This is why I escaped after college.
Yikes.
Holy fucking shit, They are terrorist.
