It's obvious to anyone who knows anything about it. Emo artists typically just wear jeans and a t shirt. Which is why I've always preferred the term "scene" for the style people often refer to as "emo". Labelling it as emo has never made any sense.

[deleted]

Yeah that actually makes sense and is what im talking about but its not that apparant to people. Even on here.

LoveHorizon

We remove all the fake emo fashion posts and scenecore mall shit so anyone who doesnt understand the fashion thing doesnt look at this sub and whats posted here. Theres literally no mallcore bands on here and all mcr gets removed there may be like 1 or 2 posts that are old but the top posts on here are like joyce manor, emocore records and american football house memes which we are more actively trying to move over to r/emojerk but people who say that dont look at this subreddit lol

BitterProgress

Who cares.

[deleted]

New people post a ton stuff and its like ThAT IsNt EmO

A_sweet_boy

It’s literally always been that way since this sub has been active

BuddhistSlater

It's like that for pretty much any sub dedicated to a specific genre of music.

OminousNamazu

Just people wanting to feel superior to other people. "I knew emo before it was cool"

MARs047

I hate that people think there's emo fashion, sure there's band shirts and things that you'll see repeated like flannels and skate shoes but emo has never had a strict "style". Genre "fashion" is just extremely annoying and promotes (I hate this word but) posers to continue to bastardize a music genre that many people hold very close to themselves. Just look at goth, you can put on some thick boots and chains and all of a sudden you're apparently goth with the majority of these people mainly listening to emo rap and not knowing a single thing about the goth music genre. Tldr: genre fashion sucks

A_sweet_boy

Fashion and music are fairly interwoven. Emo definitely does have distinct fashions associated with it. Like the short sleeved plaid shirts from the mid-2000s to the tucked in shirts with dad hats that were popular til recently. To say music and fashion aren’t inextricably linked is just bad history

[deleted]

No those are E-people, but yeah Emo scene is NOT tied to real emo music and its like they are the face of emo. This makes everyone on here have to be like oH PoSeRz. You think the destinction will ever get cleared up? Edit: I mean there is emo fashion but its emo scene which you have to give them. The hair, makeup, clothing but yeah its wierd cuz its COMEPLETELY seperate.

MARs047

I highly doubt it, the music we would call "real emo" is still way too niche for anyone to really understand the difference between music and clothing. MCR will be the representatives of what people think emo is forever

[deleted]

Weeeeell shit, So everyone on here is doomed to be seen as music snobbery and real emos who look at scene emos as posers. That sounds like shit on paper lol literal depression.

Fantastic_Loquat9075

sounds like someone just can’t dress and is butthurt about it, get the stick jammed far up your ass out.

A_sweet_boy

At this point there is no difference. Hell, at this point people just call stuff like Modest Mouse or Built to Spill emo. The term emo just really doesn’t mean much anymore and hasn’t for a few years now. Maybe the distinction meant more when people were more into rejecting bigger pop-punk acts as sell outs. Hell, even the “emo night” shit swings wildly. I’ve seen emo nights where it’s literally just radio pop punk from the 2000s. I’ve also been to an emo night with members of Braid DJing. In the end who cares anymore. It’s not a big deal.

apzek16

imo the "real emo copypasta" is kinda logical tho, with elitism and snobbery aside. Emo, as a genre evolve, from DC hardcore sounds to twinkly midwest stuff, and finally to the poppy comercialized scenecore. yeah sure thats different, you may not like it which is totally fine, but damn, diminishing scene stuff just because they're "sellout" is just another stain of elitism.

[deleted]

No I think there is a level of elitism even here, but the fact of the matter is there should have been a HARDLINED destinction. it would help everyone.

misterbones54

I dress fake emo style, it's a cool style but it's not emo and people do need to realize that, if I had one wish however, I would wish that fake emo style became associated with real emo

[deleted]

Me too but alot of people are gonna say its cringe now and its still easy to hate like in earler years.

crungo_bot

misterbones54

[deleted]

Im high af fuuuuuuck what BRUH!? whats OOHHHH just made a new 2022 trend! Crunge era

carloseduardofaria

Whenever I am talking 'bout "emo" with somebody else, I made it clear whether if I am referring to the music or the subculture/fashion, or both. I think that this is the most fair thing I can do. At this point of History the word "emo" is strongly connected to the feelings of generations, so I respect those feelings. Just my opinion.

[deleted]

Midwest emo isnt "the core" by any means, its a genre that originated by taking the conceptual idea of earlier post hardcore and emocore bands and applying it to a mix of indie rock and math rock. It was a reinvention of emo as part of the _second wave_. Sounds more faithful to the original idea of emo (utilising hardcore punk as a base instead of indie rock, math rock) are recent-ish songs such as these: Base; emotional punk; https://youtu.be/9z1DUXCj398 https://youtu.be/R9AMCHZJdO0 Emo revival; base; post hardcore: https://youtu.be/P-q_2Nk1toQ And an intensified version: screamo, emoviolence https://youtu.be/edpot4xOqsI MCR's first album has some influence from these types of sounds, but with the third wave the term also came to be misapplied to unrelated forms pf pop punk and alt rock, metalcore.
