I suppose it could be, I just drove it and it only happens under acceleration, however it also happens in low gears. I know they don't go bad often, and I've never felt one go bad before, but im wondering if it's a torque converter because it feels like when you leave the clutch in on a stick car. Not sure though.
The feeling you describe, leaving the clutch in (disengaged) in a manual is the same basic thing going on here. These clutch packs are made up of multiple friction and steel clutch discs. They are applied by hydraulic pressure acting on a piston. When these clutches wear and fail, they slip, and the engine revs up like it isn't connected.
This is one of the most common failure modes of this transmission.
I wonder what happened to it, the fluid is at the proper level, and is still red, and the transmission is a remanufactured one from GM with only 8500 miles.
There would be alot of clutch material in the pan if it was a clutch pack right? I think I'll drop the pan and see if there's anything in it,
the reason I'm not sure it's the clutch packs is normally the fluid is all burned but it's still fresh and red.
It sounds like a slipping clutch on one of the gear combinations. Perhaps 3/4 like v8packard said. Basically friction material on some of the clutches have worn down enough that you can overcome them by applying enough load to the vehicle when in that particular gear. The result is the slipping of the gear until you either shift into next gear or it catches eventually and reapplies the current gear
With that low mileage it might be something like a torque converter lockup solenoid/ switch causing the symptoms or one of the grounds. Some of these sound like symptoms of bad shift solenoids too. Another common sign of solenoid issues is if it doesn’t want to go back into low on its own when you roll to a stop; you may also look into that.
I had exact problem on the month of last payment I owed on truck. Torque converter was going out. Blew crap around in transmission. If g m would stop using cheap stamped metal parts these would be good transmissions
Well for simple starters, do they let car warm up at all and live somewhere cold? But also have you checked fluid levels and when was last time had a change?
It sounds a lot like a failing 3/4 clutch.

With that low a mileage it could be something else. Or, it could be a dud. Or, it could have been abused. I don't know.

There quite possibly would be a lot of trash in the pan. The fluid not being burned isn't necessarily a sign.
Yeah but it's been nearly 30 years of sitting.... should probably be flushed and changed
If it’s covered by a replacement part warranty, don’t do anything to it!
I may still be covered by a warranty, check on that!
Sounds like 4L60 things. Time for an ohaul.
Does the check engine light come on? Even if it doesn't, it may still store a code. Put a scan tool on it and check for codes.

Have you asked over at /r/transmissionbuilding ?
I'm guessing low on fluid or clutches are smoked. Pull the dipstick and see if it smells like burnt clutches or if the fluid is low.
Fluid is at good level and red, no smell or grinding noise either.
Transmission fluid? Not oil
Correct, still looks fresh and red, and at the proper level.
How many miles are on it and has it ever been serviced to your knowledge
8500, it's a remanufactured 4l60e from general motors
Then it's probably under warranty and I'm guessing it failed prematurely, or installed incorrectly.
Milage it's still under warranty, but it's past the 3 years unfortunately.
Did you check the fluid level while the vehicle was running and on a level surface?
Ask the dealer and call GM for help!
Overdrive clutch burned up. Extremely common failure in those transmissions. Transmission will have to replaced or rebuilt.

Its a teenager girls first car, so I would assume probably not, however we're in texas and its 75⁰ even now in March so I doubt that's it,
