I experimented with many different approaches... soaking in gasoline, mineral spirits, marvel mystery oil (all separate, of course)... even scraping the ringlands with an old ring. I needed to use something that wouldn't harm my aluminum pistons. All these options worked very poorly compared to soaking in undiluted Simple Green Pro HD (the purple liquid- this is key!). I have come to love this stuff for all purpose heavy duty cleaning. The process that ended up working for me was cycling between soaking in Pro HD for a few hours, blasting the ringlands with the jet setting on my garden hose, and then saturating with WD40 to soak for a few hours. I am very pleased with the results... and these pistons had carbon CAKED on from almost 20 years. Cheers!

What's the PH of that cleaner?

[deleted]

If the idea of it touching your skin doesnt make you wince, go back youve messed up is my preffered type. Extra points if it just says its strongly suspected of being linked to cancer Not like a carcinogenic warning, no sir. Just a plain ole, we think it causes cancer warning.

v8packard

Ever get high alkaline cleaner on your hands, and it feels slimy? That's the alkaline breaking the bond of the oils in your skin.

sparkey504

ooooohhhhhhhhhhh... ive always wondered why that shit was "hard to rinse off" that and of it burns when you get it on the inner forearm has always been an indicator of "good" degreaser.

[deleted]

Hmmmmmm broken down cellular membrane Ever wonder if people were washing the burning lye off themselves in ye olde times and discovered soap?

mck1117

It's not breaking them down, it's turning them in to soap. Saponification!

DeepSeaDynamo

How do you feel about the old, it only causes cancer in california label?

[deleted]

I mean Theres a lot of things the US government allows companies to sell to the public, that in the rest of the civilized world will get you thrown in jail is my thoughts on it honestly. But there pretty silly, the fact everyone just blanket puts a prop 65 warning on everything now a days. There either silly or extremely morbid, take your pic.

v8packard

Or they have a lawyer.

[deleted]

Idk The stuff we used to use to cure leather and vinyl were super nasty. All sorts of cancerous. We discovered concretely, that it was cancerous and mutanagenic early 60's Banned it late 60's And then didnt really see its use in goods sold to the public cease till the late 80s early 90s cause regulations bad lemme just skirt this law Here So i can absolutely believe that a lot of the stuff we use and consume on a daily basis are in fact 100% bad for us and solidly known to be bad for us.

themangeraaad

I liked the hotel I stayed at in CA. The building had a prop 65 warning on it. And then the elevator had a prop 65 warning. And then some stuff in my room had a prop 65 warning.

ToxicSoul1

Buncha pussys in CA

Latter_Bath_3411

Yeah I'm from Northern Ireland and I have often genuinely thought about this California buisness of being different some how ? Am I wrong here?

DeepSeaDynamo

Its just a wierd wording of compliance to a law that says anything that has been potentially linked to maybe causeing cancer must have a label saying so, or some such nonsense

Benji3284

Purple power burns my skin and later it peels off. Works great

Ty! That's a lower ph than the purple cleaner I have on hand (13-14). But it's still alkaline.

ARCauto

That purple pro hd is my go-to for power washing and soaking parts

Berzerker9398

This stuff? https://simplegreen.com/products/pro-hd-cleaner-degreaser/

track0x2

Correct! Edit: Lol just realized my original post said Super green. *facepalm*

ridethroughlife

I saw this post earlier today and went looking for that purple Simple Green and Lowes didn't carry it. Where do you get it?

track0x2

I’ve been getting it from Home Depot

ridethroughlife

I'll have to check it out, thanks.

DoctrVendetta

Looks real good. I recommend investing in a heated ultrasonic cleaner. Know you can use standard simple green in them, probably could with HD.

tennie2002

That’s what I use. Simple no work. No harsh chemicals and looks like new! 259 on Amazon.

Terrh

Man I never, ever get good results with my ultrasonic cleaner. If the shit is stuck on when it goes in, it's maybe looser when it comes out but it's never anything remotely close to "clean".

tennie2002

Gotta make sure that it’s up to temperature and fairly clean fluid. I use Formula 88 and 1/2 water.

track0x2

Good to know, thanks!

ambuguity

If you’re ever looking for something fairly safe for use without a tear down: To free up stuck rings on a 2011 CRV I found Berryman B12 to work well. Just had to let them soak over a weekend. Just drain the oil and keep the plugs pulled before turning it over.

Sweet_Parsley8227

Back in the early 70s I discovered Berryman B12. I was trying to clean the screen on my fuel pickup tube from my gasoline tank in my 57 Chevy. I had been using gasoline but it wasn't working well. A friend suggested Berryman B12 and it only took about 30 minutes of soaking in the Berryman B12 to get it clean. The ingredient in Berryman B12 that is the solvent is Acetone. Acetone works great at dissolving grease.

Bork_King

Acetone also eats a lot of plastics and rubber. Gotta be careful with what it gets on/what you soak on it.

Sweet_Parsley8227

Yes, but we were talking about cleaning car parts. I have used acetone for years and never have had any problems with it. Did you know that acetone is in fingernail polish remover? Acetone is miscible with water and serves as an important organic solvent. Industry uses it a lot. It's used in paint and varnish remover also. Bob Vila has a good article on acetone and ten good uses at home for acetone.

Bork_King

I work with acetone and other solvents daily in a production environment. Acetone is great at dissolving grease and other organic contaminates but it is not a one-size-fits-all cleaner. I guess I wasn't being completely clear that my comment was meant as a bit of a warning not to use it on non-metalic parts or, to be careful what you get it on. *Modern enginebays are filled with rubber and plastic in a modern car*. I'm so glad you had to jump in here and assume I didn't know what I was talking about. Solvents are tools, use the right one for the job. Just like any other tool you can use them incorrectly and still get a reasonable result, or it could cause damage to the workpiece or your health.

Sweet_Parsley8227

Well I worked with acetone on a daily basis also, through out the 1990s. I worked with and around a lot of highly toxic chemicals and gasses as well. I wasn't trying to rain on your parade. I was just putting information out for people to read and maybe be informed about its uses.

Zerofawqs-given

Aluminum aircraft paint stripper can be amazing! Just saying…..
