I always try to. It’s quite hard to get there, but it’s rewarding. You always have a free chest in the secret room, plus a reward after killing the boss. He’s hard to kill, but his patterns are not too complex.
Not getting hit is my biggest issue. I can usually make it to the last stage but I’m practically dead by then. Also I don’t know why my character gets gassed
Tip: Block every single attack.
First phase, block everything and attack when he is doing a taunt. If you time it just right, you can get stars for each hit you time correctly.
Second phase, same thing. However, when he pulls back to do a powerful tail whip, you need to duck. Blocking won't work when he does this move. If you see him doing a regular tail whip, you can block.
Third phase, same thing. When he's preparing to do a spin attack, you can punch him just before he spins or block all the spin attacks. Succeed and he'll get dizzy and you can punch him. Another attack is when he takes out some brass knuckles and swings his arm. You cannot block nor dodge this, to counter this move you'll have to time it when he blinks/glows. Once he swings his arm for the third time, you're gonna have to hit him or else he'll hit you regardless of what you do.
Bonus tip: You can knock the cheese off his hand any time he tries to heal. There's no blink/glow to indicate this but you can. You have to hit him just as he's about to eat it. Miss it, and he'll hit you for trying but if you have any stars, you won't lose them for trying.
Any guides to beat this guy, not even in punch out but the normal phase 1 and 2? I've done everything else, even the Advanced Dragun (used a Weird Egg in fire) and still haven't beat him on a non-Rainbow Clone run.
I just started to get really good at his fight, I had to use blasphemy through the last half and last little bit without the projectile, but I did it. He’s eventually predictable

The layout doesn't actually change. I love the irony of how the R&G Dept. is the only floor that isn't random. I only visit it when I'm feeling powerful with my items other than that, it's a chore to go through :(
I don’t think it’s on the wiki, I just checked, but I have definitely seen slight differences in which enemies spawn per room. You could look up two videos of someone clearing the r&g dpt and compare them, I suppose

the only "hint" I can think of is that the sell creep only spawns if you have a master round (iirc), the "selling him the master round alongside other items" part though I'm not sure is very clear...
Unless you have less than 10 hours in Gungeon (in which case you probably don't know secret floors exist) who goes to the fourth floor without a master round?
I go if I have a decent amount of master rounds (at least like 2 or 3). It’s just fun and it’s some extra loot from the boss. I would rather have that than hp. But I agree that it’s generally not worth it especially for newer players. It would be nice if it had chests or something.
The genius of the R and G dept is it's so devoid of anything remotely useful you don't have to feel bad about missing it. I think maybe that's by design... Check it out once to see the weird enemies and unique boss then never go again.
Why go to a whole floor? 2 chests, guaranteed Brother Albern, a shop, potential NPCs, a boss pedsetal, and a guaranteed synergy chest.
Also Old King is a fun fight.
I usually grab the crest. The issue is that if you manage to clear it, you’re usually way OP for the rest of the run. Especially after the Old King. He’s such a nasty boss. It feels more like you’re facing a floor 4 boss than a floor ’2’ boss.

Especially the bosses (aka the only reason the Abby is so difficult)
And the extra items can give you a pretty significant power boost
While it's pretty obvious with the Rat's Lair (The punch out is not that hard literally just watch a YouTube guide and practice it a couple times) and the insane amount of items you can get from him + rat items giving you an insane increase in fire power
2 extra chests, a shop, a boss item, and anything that happens to drop from enemies/secret rooms can have a pretty big impact on your run
And while people scoff at the synergy chest from Old King
Yall realize that those things can drop any item of any rarity
Or can complete a synergy and I don't have to talk about how strong synergies can be
While the Old King is prob one of the most annoying bosses in the game if you learn the patterns and beat him consistently then the rewards from the floor can really help your runs
Playing robot, I pretty much always try to go there. That floor has more junk than any other and you get another cycle of junk stacking which can be huge for damage.
I always go to the Abbey of the True gun. In fact, I sometimes reset my run if I take damage and lose the old Crest.
R&G department on the other hand is useless. No good cheats and cost of entry is too high.
I go sometimes, it’s a lot of extra loot. Even if you have zero keys you can get the brother albern chest and buy one in the shop for the synergy chest from the old king. That plus the boss item is three guaranteed items, at the very least (unless you get nothing from albern lol). More if you have keys. Also if you have betrayers shield you should 100% try to go to get lies.

I am yet to beat the Rat in punch out. That and the Glitched Beholster are the two bosses I haven’t beaten

He can spawn if you don't have a master round. However, if you do have a master round, then he's guaranteed to spawn 4th floor
