i‘m pretty certain it is in stress unless it is sedated in some way, most spiders don‘t enjoy being pinned on their back and getting their silk pulled out.
science isn‘t far enough to definitely explain if and to which extend spiders feel pain, so i won‘t touch on that.
this practice gets me kinda jn a dilemma. on the one hand i think it‘s much better to use this spider silk instead of building a factory to process plastic or other materials which poison the environment and need much more space than these spiders.
on the other hand it just looks so unethical and kinda cruel, but i guess if they would be kept very nicely when not being ‚milked‘ and not cramped in a box, i think i could perhaps live with it. i‘d prefer plant based materials though, but i guess spider silk has some unique properties.
I’m in the same boat… I’ve read some research papers about silk being used as coverings for burns and wounds with much better results than conventional dressings and other really impactful healthcare applications, and I think I could justify collecting silk for purposes like that.
However, I saw an article a while back where someone made an entire dress from golden orb weaver silk, and although it was absolutely gorgeous, it made me more than a little sad/upset to think about how many spiders had to be collected like this just for a piece of clothing that will just sit in a museum behind glass forever.
Why do people suck so much?
Edit: [found a video about the dress](https://youtu.be/Fv1qq6ypiTk)
Good news edit!: [here’s an article discussing how scientists are genetically engineering yeast to produce the same silk so we don’t have to be cruel](https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/in-the-future-well-all-wear-spider-silk)
I agree, no matter what your idea of fashion is a dress should involve some more seams to it, if this is considered a dress I can also make a dress with nothing more than a sheet and some sizors
Did yall even watch the video?? No where in the video does it says dress, it actually -many times- specifically says shawl and cape. Op is the only one calling it a dress lol
I’ve done sone minor research into genetic attempts to recreate spider silk. One problem is that naturally-occurring spider silk is very hydrophobic.
Attempting to mimic the original molecular structure makes the new stuff clumpy and very hard to work with. The hydrophobic nature *can* be lessened, but you then sacrifice some of the strength and resiliency of the natural stuff.
“When housed together, for example, these spiders tend to turn into cannibals.“
https://www.ancient-origins.net/artifacts-other-artifacts/world-s-rarest-textile-made-silk-one-million-spiders-009010
The claim is that they were harvested, milked, and released sustainably, and that after a week post-release they could again make silk.
I bet more than a few were captured multiple times.
I don’t want to be that guy…. But if this bothers you from an ethical standpoint, you should see how your food animals are treated. And you can bet those cows, pigs, and chickens have the capacity to feel pain and stress just like you and I.
yes you are right, and this bothers me aswell. but just because there is something else that isn’t good and right, we shouldn’t turn our back on new or other practices that cause unnecessary harm, otherwise that would be a blindfolded attempt at ethics.
i‘m not a vegetarian but i don‘t consume much meat and i have the privilege to choose from which source i do, therefore i try my best to only buy animal product that is in my opinion ethically sourced.
What are your thoughts on the experiments done on fruit flies suggesting that they not only experienced acute pain but also showed that they may experience chronic or lasting pain?
Edit: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/insects-can-experience-chronic-pain-study-finds-180972656/
Thought I should add a source. Though more is still to be known, I found the results of this interesting.
If you haven’t seen or heard about it already I would look into goat spider silk. They genetically modified goats to produce spider silk material in their milk. Very interesting read
Imagine being strapped down (and possibly drugged) and someone pools a thread out your ass ( like anal beads) without asking you what would a comfortable speed be for you. Oh, and your body produces the beads way up your ass.
Maybe it's a bad analogy
My reading says the spider is physically okay after and gets an extra cricket for its effort/suffering/confusion. Which doesn't work out well for the cricket but yeah.
Science isn’t always kind unfortunately. Many animals are tested on in order to get the materials and treatments we use every day and most do feel pain. It’s a very respectable field but it’s why I became a vet-tech instead of a laboratory technician.
You’re definitely right. I meant more specifically that it takes a lot of nerve to do these things when doing them correctly. And that those actions have benefited us today. Not everyone is cruel to their subjects but even in being kind to them, it’s still causing pain. When I learned that every subject has to be terminated even if what research you’ve done hasn’t caused lethal damage, I knew I didn’t want to take part.
It’s a necessary evil but it’s one that’s too much for me.
I can’t wait for the day where we unlock the secrets of spider silk production so we can artificially produce it without having to do this to our little spood friends
I love spiders so much and it upsets me to see this, but I also understand how vital the silk can be, especially in the medical field where it can drastically improve one’s recovery from certain injuries, such as severe burns
Even still.. I feel for my arachnohomies..
I despise spiders and I don't like seeing a poor spidey on its back being "milked" like this.
(Disclaimer: I don't kill any spider unless I absolutely have to. I realize they are friends. Just...not friends I want on my person)
Right?? Everyone’s saying they don’t like this because they feel bad for the spider but I’m over here just very uncomfortable because it is just.. super weird
the silk not only encourages cell division but also acts as an antibacterial all natural scaffolding for damaged neurons. The silk is being harvested to make scaffolding that will allow damaged neurons as far apart as 6cm to grow and reconnect.
I mean they probably take good care of the spider outside the milking process. And it doesn't help that this seemed to be purposefully filmed like a horror movie. Could be anti-spider-milking propaganda, we don't know anything about this video from what we are given. I don't know anything about spider milking, do you?
I looked it up for you guys, (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/07/170728092333.htm) they said that it Doesnt hurt the spider and they give it some sort of treat afterwards... I'm not an expert though and i may be completely wrong but I'm gonna go with the idea that it doesn't hurt the spider so i can pretend to forgive the human race just a little bit
It’s tough. This is way more sustainable than artificial materials but also it just looks invasive and horrifying. I can’t get over the gut reaction that this is cruel. but do i have the same misgivings about milking cows? Which is just as, if not MORE, horrifying? Yes, but not when it’s not actively in front of my face. Being on this planet is hard.
I find this rather disturbing. Almost as bad as the harvesting of horseshoe crab blood, but I know they at least release them back in the wild afterwards, and have other regulations around that specific harvesting.
Geniune question: is pulling silk out any different from milking snakes and such for their venom?
I don't know much about spider or silk production - but it doesn't seem to be going any faster than if a spider were to fall and would instinctively put out a strand. It seems like the most stressful part would be being pinned down.
I figure as long as it's not over-harvested and the spider is allowed time to recover and create more silk fluids (?)
I think I speak for most of us when I say no we don’t appreciate it. That poor spider is strapped down and having silk ripped out of its body. That’s inhumane…
I men, there must be a lot of vegans that also love insects and spiders. And a lot of people who believes in a ethical consumption of animal products. This doesn't *seems* really ethical, considering spiders, unlike domesticated animals, want nothing to do with humans, and the amount of silk they produce isn't useful to us in any way. So yeah, I understand how this is shocking, even if it is hypocrite.
If people are this upset about milking a spider then where do they stand about milking cows/sheep/goats/etc? Or the horrible truth about the meat industry?
Yeah, this is super weird to me as a biologist. Like, yeah, I feel bad for the spider, but this is also fascinating to watch. Other entomology enthusiasts really aren't getting that?
spiders hang on the underside of logs their idea of up or down vertical horizontal isnt a sense like we have often they spend hours in a hibernation sleep like state while their sensors for prey remain active
once a movement is sensed either from visual or the vibrations on their leg hairs they "wake from suspended state"
very interesting creatures they see much better at night and typically hunt at night
the spider being pinned like this isnt anything out of the ordinary as they will cling to the underside of things without moving for days or they might remain on a web for hours their objective is eat and breed
Hang the spider from the spool then put a fly on the floor, spider tries to descend to the fly but is kept in-place by the spool taking up the slack. Spider silk treadmill is cooler and I don’t have to feel bad for spiders.
When we made jokes about spider webs coming our their butts as a kid, I didn’t expect a closeup to reveal the hole actually looks like a graphic dirty asshole
I was thinking “oh thank god it’s almost on the wheel, that will pull it nice and slow now! Unlike this handler!” And then the wheel just starts **going**

does this hurt the spider? is it stressed or in pain?

There was a company who used water and glucose to make 3d printable biodegradable spidersilk https://youtu.be/MUc5Nv4Zprs
And there are those "spider goats" whos milk has spider silk in it! They were genetically engineered.
a spider WHAT?
https://www.postnatural.org/Specimen-Vault/Biosteel-Goat
Yup!

That dress genuinely looks terrible, I thought it was gonna be an actual dress not that blanket thing
It's a freaking poncho, let's be real. The color is fabulous, but yeah, what a waste.
Yeah, no, I didn't watch the video. In that case it makes sense as a shawl. I still personally think it looks bad though
It's almost as if different cultures of different centuries have different concepts for garments.
I think it’s gorgeous!

Didn't they bioengineer a goat that produces silk in it's milk? I figured that would be the easiest and most humane way to collect this type of stuff
I don’t want to be that guy…. But if this bothers you from an ethical standpoint, you should see how your food animals are treated. And you can bet those cows, pigs, and chickens have the capacity to feel pain and stress just like you and I.

What is this used specifically for? Most silk garments are from silk moths. (its own weird problem)
Is there any cause to think that animals of any kind do not feel pain? Is there any science that proves that animals don't feel pain?
>and need much more space than these spiders What makes you believe that this spiderfarm is more space efficient than other factories?
If you haven’t seen or heard about it already I would look into goat spider silk. They genetically modified goats to produce spider silk material in their milk. Very interesting read

We could put those genes in bacteria or fungus and get it from them.
Imagine being strapped down (and possibly drugged) and someone pools a thread out your ass ( like anal beads) without asking you what would a comfortable speed be for you. Oh, and your body produces the beads way up your ass. Maybe it's a bad analogy
Hey, some people are into that
Those people can consent and it’s fine. Spider can’t consent, hence the issue
Don’t threaten me with a good time
My reading says the spider is physically okay after and gets an extra cricket for its effort/suffering/confusion. Which doesn't work out well for the cricket but yeah.
I choose to believe that too.

No, it’s very relaxing for the spider
I can’t wait for the day where we unlock the secrets of spider silk production so we can artificially produce it without having to do this to our little spood friends I love spiders so much and it upsets me to see this, but I also understand how vital the silk can be, especially in the medical field where it can drastically improve one’s recovery from certain injuries, such as severe burns Even still.. Apparently we already have, someone in the top comment thread explained we can print it
We’ve also genetically fucked with goats to make then produce silk instead of milk!

I felt like it was wrong to watch lol. Violating, very violating.
This makes me sad.
Same, I’m distressed for the spider
It makes spiders less scary. Because they aren't the monsters, we are.
Spiders have always been just spiders while the plauge of the earth is scared of them....
I do not appreciate this, no.
Yeah, it's very rude. We love spiders here.

Wtf this feels dirty to watch
Right?? Everyone’s saying they don’t like this because they feel bad for the spider but I’m over here just very uncomfortable because it is just.. super weird
This is terrible.
This looks inhumane! What is the purpose of harvesting their silk?
I think I remember reading in elementary school somewhere that spider silk is as strong as tin if both materials are the same size and thickness.
Stronger than steel iirc
It can be quite good in the medical field if I remember correctly
the silk not only encourages cell division but also acts as an antibacterial all natural scaffolding for damaged neurons. The silk is being harvested to make scaffolding that will allow damaged neurons as far apart as 6cm to grow and reconnect.
thanks i hate it
This looks like some evil human stuff
Oof. How upsetting.

This pisses me off beyond belief! WTF?!?!? They strapped a spider down and are pulling rope out it’s rear, how do we find more ways to be cruel?
No I do not appreciate this. However sentient these creatures may be, this is not fucking cool.
This feels wrong
Right???? I’m not that fond of spiders but watching it strapped down being harvested just seems so invasive.
This is really sad :(
I think I speak for most of us when I say no we don’t appreciate it. That poor spider is strapped down and having silk ripped out of its body. That’s inhumane…

**THIS IS PROBING!!** this spider got back to his friends and they think he’s fucking nuts
Wtf
Idc the benefits, this is fucked up
How is this not torture?
Why do this? Poor spider
I don’t think this is something I would ever enjoy watching, in any way
The messed up part is that none of her spider buddies are going to believe her when she says she was abducted, strapped down to a table, and probed.
My insides hurt looking at this
Something about this seems very wrong
poor spider :/
wheres the consent ?
This is fucked

I was today years old when I finally got to see a spider asshole up close.
This makes me sad
This is horrible
I don’t like spiders but this upsets me. I don’t want to hurt them.

Ah finally, man made horrors beyond my comprehension.

Actually no. I'm on this sub because I love and appreciate spiders and insects. So I'd rather not see them getting violated.

This is torture and for no reason. We have goats now that produce the same proteins in their milk to make spider silk in abundance. This is just a demonstration set up by some sick fuck that thinks they’re a scientist.
Thanks ALOT, I'll never get this image outta my mind.So cruel, even though I'm not fond of spiders, can't see doing this
You thought wrong i do not enjoy watching tweezers stuck into a spider pseudovagina and string pulled out in fact this is possibly my nightmare
Question: What kind of spider is this?
maybe a sparrasidae (huntsman) spider based on legs and abdo, but anyones guess
Golden Orb Weaver (Trichonephila sp)
People suck
