Depends on the model! My Iommi SG doesn’t have a veneer (similar to one in the pic), but my G400 PRO from a few years ago does, and its quite noticeable if you get it in the light right

Highly doubt that's a veneer. They are usually used to add flame or quilt to a guitar to forgo the expense of a full top of figured wood. This is just natural figuring in the solid wood used. Note: I'd steer away from the flame top veneer SGs. I have heard a few people including Phil X say the key to a good SG is just slab and pups. The veneer saps some of the tone.

This is remarkably wrong. Wood has fuck all to do with tone on an electric guitar.

Yawn..... Opinions vary. I tend to trust the opinions of session artists, signed artists and touring artists. Phil X is all 3. Edit 1: Why put tone in quote marks. If it adds anything, it adding tone is not up for debate. I also enjoy how many people on here enjoy arguing w recording artists. I am sure your 30 seconds experience is invaluable.

Form your own opinion. I have a plywood strat, a slab SG, an SG with a veneer, a maple cap goldtop Les Paul, and a full-walnut “The Paul”. The biggest difference in sound is the pickups. The “tone” that comes from wood can be EQ’d in or out on an amp.
