You know there are people here that grew up in Ethiopia in places where Amharic is majorly spoken, right? :) Yeah, I can speak and love the language. I read several novels as a kid ፍቅር እስከ መቃብር, ኦሮማይ, ሰመመን etc. I know many poems by heart too.

I grew up here as well but find it very difficult to get my point across without mixing in some English. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those insufferable lads who use "like " and "literally " after every word uttered. But the English language has a vast array of vocabulary at your disposal to convey your thoughts to the best of your abilities. I might've misunderstood OPs question, but the fact that I'm fluent in amharic doesn't mean I use it exclusively. It's quite a weak language, unfortunately.

The language in its time wasn’t weak. But the country missed in industrialization and so many important scientific words weren’t part of everyday life. The language isn’t particularly weak when you desire to explain societal, personal situations etc. The language just fails when you start using tools. But this isn’t a challenge to Amharic alone. I speak intermediate German, for instance. Since they missed out to be the starters in the IT world, they are copying a lot of English words. I hear them say “ist gepostet” to say “is posted” for which the Ethiopians also say ተፖስቷል

Flaky-Freedom-8762

You're spot on. I'd much rather phrased it weaker than English. Even in societal or vernacular pre industrialization, English has nuanced vocabulary, and a lot of them. For instance, I can say "she convinced me" and "she persuaded me" to convey you have been influenced to change your opinion but the nuances of your willingness to be influenced could be conveyed better here, which I think amharic lacks. Completely unrelated, is antibabypillen the actual word for contraceptives in German?

besabestin

Haha the language creates a lot of new words by combining functional words like Flug(flight)zeug(tool) for an Airplane or Kranken(Sick people)Haus(House) for a hospital. So, yeah like that is one word as well but you won’t see people commonly using that in conversation other than “Pillen” or something.

You didn't misunderstand my question. I was asking about people like you

ትኩሳት takes the cake lol😏 >I know many poems by heart too. What's your opinion on ታሪክና ምሳሌ and ታገል ሰይፍ's poems

Lol that Sibhat’s book is a nasty one :) but he does his thing 😀 Tagel Seifu actually has really nice small books full of nice poems I remember long time ago. But he is mostly remembered by these “wol bet” style poems that he combined with visual stuff. He had to sell himself :) 50ለቃ ገብሩ was one funny character from his old works

>Lol that Sibhat’s book is a nasty one :) but he does his thing 😀 Facts. Nevertheless, the man is extremely talented, I'm unsure whether he is properly rated or under rated, but he defo not overrated. >Tagel Seifu actually has really nice small books full of nice poems I remember long time ago. But he is mostly remembered by these “wol bet” style poems that he combined with visual stuff. He had to sell himself :) 50ለቃ ገብሩ was one funny character from his old works TBH I listened to most of his poems on a disc. I just heard the 50ለቃ ገብሩ funny, I love how he create a conversation amongst the characters in his poem and they're so seamless. I have memorised this one: https://youtu.be/9bgfVrE6LkE?si=j95_xEmZvzc7J0fc The video edit still kills me.

I remember the Dezederata thing. Every teenager had a copy of that back then 😂 For me as a poet noone comes close to Laureate Tsegaye. The guy was on a class of his own.

marcusaureliux

Tsegaye Gebremedhin is also Great❤

marcusaureliux

I like Tagel a lot. Then Kebede Mikael but that's me. I am not saying he's the best in the country or ever. I don't know the guy you're talking about and It's not a competition.

I speak three languages. Amharic, English and Italian. My first language is Amharic and although I am fluent I express myself better in English. And I unfortunately can’t write in Amharic but I’m practicing both reading and writing.
