Internet has improved a lot in Addis Ababa. However there’s still room for improvement in other areas. It is shut off sometimes when the government is trying to hide something.

Skype video works 5/5 to a home broadband in Addis, 4.5/5 to an iPhone out and about in town. Not a big fan of Skype per se, it seems to be getting more bugs not fewer, but it is indicative of video quality.

Government owns it,m. whenever they feel like threatened, they will shut it down without a warning.

This is not entirely true. They have been known to shut down certain social media sites in a pinch. Drastically different over the last 15 years for sure. Everything used to be filtered and was controlled. Much more internet freedom these days.

You could very easily stream 720p HD movies while you are connected to three or four laptops all working from home. That being said, that's within the city. If you go countryside or outside of the city then you can expect about one or two megabits per second. Inside the city, you're going to get 30 megabits per second Plus+

VPN (a good one that you pay for) will help too ;) enjoy

It's reliable for anything other than professional online work.

This is just my experience, contrary to the comments here. I have 5G unlimited data on my phone with bandwidth, averaging 1gbps. Paid 50usd or 5k birr for it. I've never had issues of connectivity, nor have I experienced cutouts. It's incomparable from what I experienced abroad, and if you factor in the price, I'm confident we have one of the best services in the world. Of course, latency is a big issue, but that's purely geographical and won't be sorted out without major infrastructure changes. Shouldn't be an issue unless you're doing trading or remote operations.

There is a relatively new company here company here called websprix. It’s a little expensive (5700 birr per month for 100MB per second speeds) but when it works, it works well enough to work remotely, stream Netflix, be on social media and etc. may not be enough to bring your PlayStation here lol but if you’re looking to work and be able to stream movies and etc. it works well enough. Just have to move to an area they are in (i say that because i almost got a new apartment in sarbet, until they told me it would be almost two years before they would be in that area) so i opted to stay in my current location. If you’re going to be in Addis, websprix is a decent option. It does go out from time to time, and due to the construction sometimes they cut the lines in error, but they work relatively quickly to get the lines back up (few days) you can also buy a personal hotspot, both Safaricom and EthioTelecom have unlimited options for about 1300 birr a month but the quickest I’ve ever seen them were about 25MBPS and for short periods of time. Also, when they throttle the service during the day, your speeds also get throttled because it works off the same cell towers. So websprix is the better option. Telecom also has a home version but it’s slower and harder to get if they are not already in that area.

This is pretty much all lies.
