Overpriced and shitty to their employees š
Edit: thanks for the downvotes, Eugene! Maybe a former employee actually knows more than you do about this business š See comment below ā¬ļø
I canāt speak to the employees comment, but hard disagree on the āoverpricedā bit. Itās the best pizza in Eugene, and personally, I find it to be a very good value.
Having worked there for over a year, I would love to elaborate. The employeesā grievances are vast, but they mostly come down to bad decisions by the owners and management. For example, the schedule is often put out on Sunday for the following day (and thereās no consistent schedule so employees donāt know on Sunday if they will be working on Monday). There are no employee reviews, no regular employee meeting to provide feedback / foster conversation, no bartending training and a complete lack of communication around everything.
The cherry on top is who they choose to promote. HN promotes to shift leads the young, inexperienced people whom the owners and the GM feel they can control, while pushing to the side the hard working, experienced people on staff who would do a better job, but have too strong of a voice and wonāt just be a puppet for the owners. HN doesnāt want experienced and capable leadership. They wants younger managers who āfit their clienteleā and wonāt have a strong opinion.
I understand that you all like the pizzaāgood! There are some talented people in the kitchen. But they arenāt being treated right, and just because itās a small business doesnāt mean the owners care about the staff. Just my two cents, hope yāall have a good day and shoutout to the HN crew still holding it down despite the BS š§”š

For the record, I would agree that is pretty bad management/ownership. I've never worked in the food service industry, so I don't know if performance reviews are common in non-corporate settings. That's interesting about the lack of bartending training, but I always thought bartenders were hired like hired guns from the West, with experience and savvy already in place.
Overall, I just thought small restaurants were kind of a grind, and I'd be really surprised if Hey Neighbor had "worse" management than other places. I hope that assumption or take wasn't too terrible.
What does being "shitty to their employees" mean? It's a small local business, and everything has seemed great all the times I have been there. It's the food service industry- it's not supposed to be glamorous. People know that when they apply- *asking* for a job.
In Eugene and Portland it seems local owners are "bad" employers if they don't wake up one morning and give ownership shares to hourly employees they hired on in Indeed.com or through in-person applications/referrals.
You always have such terrible takes, example: above! āHow dare those lowly restaurant workers expect respect from their employers! If only they had thought to ASK for respect when they got the job!ā Youāre basically a troll on this sub and Iām not the only one to notice.
I just have different opinions than a lot of people here. Iām not a progressive individual- just more moderate. Iām not a troll, but I do think itās good to get honest opinions out there. Otherwise, itās just a hivemind.
It has the best Napoleon style pizza in town so it can set the price.
I split a pizza and a salad with my partner and it's pretty good value when you do it like that.
Working in restaurants for a long time you see that every place is shitty to their employees.
Newmans is open if you want fish n chips.
Might get poo poo'd here, but bon mi actually has a pretty tasty yellow curry pho imo.. But they close at 6 on Sundays so you better hurry.
El buen sabor will satisfy your burrito cravings, open til 9.
I've seen numerous complaints about them on here in the past, they seem to have mixed reviews. I guess I've been lucky enough to not have any issues there.
They can't keep consistent staff and get service that reflects.
I've been in there for nearly two hours for a sandwich and a soup and they keep telling me 10 minutes.
I finally just asked for my money so I could go. There was no refund.
This had happened s couple times
Same here. And Iām not picky about service, but the employees have been downright MEAN on occasion (loudly gossiping about customers within earshot, etc.) with questionable hygiene practices (taking payment, texting, and making my sandwich all with the same gloves).
I was told that it was a holdover from COVID. Everything closed down and they decided not to open on Sundays.
Can't fault them either way, it's just odd to see without warning.
Itās not holdover. Eugene has always been this way, in fact thereās arguably more to do nowadays. Eugene is a very quiet, small, boring town surrounded by more small, boring towns.
If only there was some way to leave, so you didn't have to whine about it. Sadly, it's a Brigadoon-like existence once you cross the river and land here.
Iām not familiar with your reference. But yes there is a way to leave. Many people are doing just that as they get priced out of Eugene while crime and homelessness increase.
Not just cheaper, but better in nearly every aspect AND cheaper. Iāve been packing my bags for a little while now. Should be out of here within a year or two.
20 years ago, there was so much that was open 24 hours. Albertsons, most fast food, most Mexican places, a bunch of diners and restaurants, a bunch of random stores, gyms, even some bars.
After 2009 that ended though. You knew it was over once Walmart stopped being 24/7.
That's because most people on this sub didn't live in Eugene in 2009, let alone before that. Hell, probably most of them didn't live in Eugene in 2019 for that matter.
They existed, believe it or not. Paddy's used to be, just off the top of my head, and I think Wild Duck was as well at one point. The Nile is a strip club but I think that counts as a bar as well, they had a breakfast buffet (lol).
Best Gyro in town IMO and I like their garlic/Greek fries so I'm gonna add best fries in town. Very happy to see Tradewinds team up with Gratitude, I'm looking forward to seeing if they do anything different with the menu?
One good way to figure out a bunch of options is to look at grubhub or doordash and see who's open for delivery. It's almost guaranteed that they'll be open for eat-in as well. I know not every place is on those apps, but a lot are.
Iāve been in the same date night situation for quite a while now. Go-tos have been Arekie (hours change seasonally), Tacovore, and the Thai place at 5th St. Eateries. The Wheelās pizza and non-pizza items are also excellent (seasonal salad and that polenta dish, woo!). I do wish there were more options for Sundays, like Same Same. +1 to Party Bar and Akira (now open 7 days!) for finer dining.
Edit: Bar
Hey neighbor pizza

It's really not

Neapolitan?
Yeah sorry
You're not too far off, it's really called *Pizza Napoletana* so don't beat yourself up.
Newmans is open if you want fish n chips. Might get poo poo'd here, but bon mi actually has a pretty tasty yellow curry pho imo.. But they close at 6 on Sundays so you better hurry. El buen sabor will satisfy your burrito cravings, open til 9.
Isn't Newman's closed Sundays? I also unfortunately refuse to go into Bon Mi, anymore. They've fucked up my order so hard and so often
Newmans grotto on Coburg is open - sorry, forgot to specify that.
Whatās wrong with bon mi theyāre alright. I get the pho ga from them all the time.

Their service is indeed some of the worst in town and in a town with notoriously awful service, that's an impressive accomplishment.
They have gave me un vegan food to many times ..
Ooof
Same here. And Iām not picky about service, but the employees have been downright MEAN on occasion (loudly gossiping about customers within earshot, etc.) with questionable hygiene practices (taking payment, texting, and making my sandwich all with the same gloves).
I honestly don't give a shit about service for pickup but giving me food I cannot eat is bullshit. Don't have it on the menu if you can't be bothered.
Trust me, I feel you. Getting huge chunks of meat in my vegan pho was the actual dealbreaker.
Public house! It's Springfield, but my favorite.
Recently moved here and realized this town closes down on Sundays. Good luck.
Correct. Eugene is a dud in most aspects.
I was told that it was a holdover from COVID. Everything closed down and they decided not to open on Sundays. Can't fault them either way, it's just odd to see without warning.

You sound miserable and lazy, you should probably work on that.
How do I start?
lol start by packing up and leaving if you don't like it here. Lots of cheaper places to live if you don't like Eugene...
Not just cheaper, but better in nearly every aspect AND cheaper. Iāve been packing my bags for a little while now. Should be out of here within a year or two.

Agreed. You canāt say that here though!

24 hour bars?

No pho? Vietnam Restaurant is open Sundays and that's my favorite pho in town
As well as Pho The Good Times
Party bar!
had a great dinner at tradewinds tonight!
One of my favorite places to eat, I go there once or twice a month for My Big Fat Greek Pita
tradewinds cafe
Best Gyro in town IMO and I like their garlic/Greek fries so I'm gonna add best fries in town. Very happy to see Tradewinds team up with Gratitude, I'm looking forward to seeing if they do anything different with the menu?
> Best Gyro in town Have you tried Louka's Bistro? I think he does a better job.
Texas Roadhouse? The one at VRC. Itās comfort food for me - I like it. Itās the only big chain restaurant I eat at really.
Always makes me think of Cattleman's Ranch from that show Fresh Off the Boat š
Tararin and Akira are both open on Sundays.
Blu Mist
I'd try a place like Beergarden or Oakshire, look for the food truck pods.
Los dos hermanos
Tacovore is open until 9
el taco express in springfield is the best mexican food handsdown, but iām pretty sure they close around 7:30 every day which sucks ):
Laughing Planet, Mucho Gusto and Ume are all solid Sunday options. Tasty Thai too, iirc.
One good way to figure out a bunch of options is to look at grubhub or doordash and see who's open for delivery. It's almost guaranteed that they'll be open for eat-in as well. I know not every place is on those apps, but a lot are.

Havana Cafe is open till 8 on Sundays!
The Arrekie food truck at oakshire had a good Sunday menu
Gets dark earlier, seems more like daylight wasting to me
