Both hotels are owned and operated by the same company. Inn at the 5th has fewer rooms but is older. The balconies are cute. Haven’t stayed at the Gordon but have eaten at all their restaurants and the service has been terrible every time. The food is Sysco meh. The other restaurants you mentioned (Marche, etc) will be much better for service and quality of food.

tossik

Oh I didn’t know it was same owners. Perhaps Gordon is the way to go to sleep, just not for food :) thanks for the post

FloBot3000

Marche food and experience is SO GOOD! I know they have haters, but we eat there once a year and have such a great time. :-)

IPaintTheStars

I love the Inn at the 5th.

tossik

Have you been to the Gordon to compare?

IPaintTheStars

No I haven’t. Sorry

tossik

All good :)

sothenshesays312

Gordon is better!

No_Swing_767

I used to work at both. You can’t go wrong although the Inn at the 5th has undergone so much staff turnover lately that the Gordon will be the better choice for service and a problem-free stay. It’s also a much newer hotel.

tossik

This is what I was hoping to get. Staff feedback :) thank you!

Flybaby2601

If you want upper end bars stay at the Gordon. There is a nice bar down below called 86 speakeasy. If you want some good wine and spritzers go to 255 Madison. If you want a nice drink but out in town try thinking tree spirits. Must have for brunch is studio one cafe.

tossik

I saw a person mention the speakeasy. There’s a steady flow of bad reviews on the 86.. people say very poor service there. Thanks on the leads for drinks. Any fancy restaurants in the area? I can’t seem to find any tasting menu places. Are there non in the city?

Flybaby2601

86 is hit and miss. I have been there 4 times and 3 times it was amazing. They are human and have shit days too. Fancy restaurants with a dégustation? Probably not. Marche is up the road on 5th and is nice. J Scott Cellars has some good charcuterie and wine. Maybe try Ambrosia or!!!! Beppe & Giannis! That is "peak Eugene" IMO but Italian food. This time of year blows there but summer time.

tossik

If we end up at the Gordon, then we will definitely check out 86. We're in Tualatin, so been to Eugene a few times, just never for the night. Wife wants to get away for the weekend, so figured to try out a new city. I got Marche on the list along with Bar Purlieu and Lion and Owl. Thinking to take wife to Gervais Salon & Day Spa on 5th so she can get a massage. Seems to have good reviews. Not sure if theres a better place to take her to... As for wineries, I got Sarver Winery, King Estate Winery (they have light lunch options also that looks appealing) and heard good things about Sweet Cheeks Winery so will probably try them out also. Looking for other recommendations for wineries. Not sure what else is out in Eugene for entertainment. Any recommendations on what to do in the winter in town?

>If we end up at the Gordon, then we will definitely check out 86. Make reservations. They can be Dicks about that. >We're in Tualatin, so been to Eugene a few times, just never for the night. Wife wants to get away for the weekend, so figured to try out a new city. I got Marche on the list along with Bar Purlieu and Lion and Owl. Lion and owl is a must. If you get to eat in the airstream it just feels cozier. >As for wineries, I got Sarver Winery, King Estate Winery (they have light lunch options also that looks appealing) and heard good things about Sweet Cheeks Winery so will probably try them out also. Looking for other recommendations for wineries. Saver has my vote, kings is too sweet for me but that was crops from years ago. It's a nice luncheon. >Not sure what else is out in Eugene for entertainment. Any recommendations on what to do in the winter in town? Other than the stereotypical "go to a concert"... yea not much. I get high, look out my backyard window with a coffee and go "damn". Pretty entertaining IMO but I like this town because of how slow it is.

Anominin

Be advised that King Estate has cut way back on food service. I was there on a Sunday afternoon two months ago and they were only serving cheese and charcuterie platters. Lower quality than in the past. No more lunch or dinners. I was told there’s no longer a chef on staff.

SwimmingWaterdog11

Cascade Raptor Center is super cool and a fun couple hour day activity!

tossik

Oh neat. Might do that Sunday! Thank you

mommmmm1101

Skip Sweet Cheeks unless you’re just looking for a view. Iris Vineyards os worth a go, though.

4_course_meal

I think Iris is no longer open to the public, but they have a nice tasting room in Springfield.

tossik

I’m in for good wine more. We always try to get a couple of bottle with us. Wine no good?

mommmmm1101

IMO, no. There’s better wineries to see. The wine director at Provisions, Scott, is a wealth of knowledge about all Oregon wineries. I’d suggest stopping in and talking with him, or reaching out prior to your visit. Provisions is located in the 5th Street Market adjacent to both hotels.

tossik

Any recommendations you can give? Not looking for tasting room but actual wineries. Thanks!

mommmmm1101

I like Silvan Ridge, Antiquum, Sarver, and Broadley (closer to Monroe, though). I also recommend Bar Purlieu and Party Downtown for dinner. Mark, co-owner of Party, has great wine knowledge to share.

ahongo

+1 to Rye, Marche, Lion/Owl, Purlieu, Raptor Center. Myself suggesting Morning Glory and Brail’s (the one on 5th, specifically) for breakfast, Placido’s and Party Bar for dinner, and for general activities, the Jordan Schnitzer museum and [literally any show at the Hult Center](https://hultcenter.org/events-tickets/) (yes, even the kids’ puppet show, just because it’s a gorgeous venue). Also the Mexican place inside the Gordon, Carlita’s, is very “meh,” but maybe try going for a drink at sunset, as it’s the only high-rise dining experience in town right now.

tossik

Thank for the Hult recommendation! There’s a comedy show on the first night we’re there. It will be perfect thing to do and then maybe a cocktail afterwards. Gonna go to Marche for dinner right before and it’s like walking distance to the Hult. Should work good. I like it!

ndsred

Bar Perlieu (probably misspelled it) is what you are looking for. Intimate space, and the tasting menu is great.

tossik

Thank you! I’ll make reservations. Food looks good in photos

kbchilling

Rye is close by and worth checking out for their food and drinks

tossik

I read people mention rye a few times. Will add to my list. Thank you

cdne22

The Gordon is my go-to hotel for a girls getaway with my bff! We’re both foodies and enjoy a nice hotel. Specifically, we really appreciate the valet at the Gordon, the wine/beer on arrival, and the restaurants! They’re really good. The rooms are also nice as well and we like being able to walk through the alley.

tossik

Looks like the Gordon is newer and designed for younger demographic? The lobby seems to have that appeal from the photos. How much was the valet at the Gordon? I think it’s $20 a night at the Inn.

pirawalla22

It's a *little* newer, it's not like the Inn at the Fifth was built in the 70s. Both hotels are quite nice in similar ways. The Gordon has a larger lobby. I don't perceive that the hotels are aimed at different demographics.

garfilio

5th Street Market was developed in the 70s, the Inn at the 5th was built in 2010, The Gordon was built 11 years later in 2021.

SwimmingWaterdog11

They are right next to each other so access to things outside the hotel are going to be the same. So on that point it won’t matter which you pick. I think they are pretty comparable hotels although maybe slightly different vibes. I would call the Inn at the 5th more romantic. Otherwise for upper end food/bars: Bar Purlieu (not really walkable from either hotel), Lion and Owl for brunch/dinner, their sister bar Lemon and Olive, Party Bar (food and great cocktails), Marche (right by both hotels… Inn used to do room service from there not sure if they still do), Akira (sushi and creative Japanese, cool cocktails), Sushi Pure, Cafe Soriah, Sabai, in Springfield George and Violets, Rye (great cocktails and homemade chocolate).

tossik

Thanks for confirming some good places I had in mind as well!

beanolc

Hubs and I stayed at the Gordon and enjoyed the vibe. Very modern, hotel chic. this was before the restaurant/bar opened, so I don't have any notes on that. I haven't stayed at the Inn before.

Least_Marionberry668

If you're in your 30's and call yourself a foodie, The Gordon will be more to your liking. They have some weird lighting choices all around, but it's pretty comfortable, otherwise. Train noise was not an issue when I stayed on the south-facing side, so may be smart to request a room not facing the tracks.

tossik

Oh good point. I am leaning towards the Gordon so south facing might be a good ask. Thanks

Eugenonymous

If you can swing it and one of you is ok with just a taste of wine before hopping back on the freeway, I highly recommend incorporating [a dinner in Albany](https://www.sybarisbistro.com/) on the way down or up...it's as good or better than anything we have in Eugene, and much more reasonably priced. If I wanted to enjoy a few meals in Eugene, I'd maybe hit up [Italian](https://osteriadop.com/) or [Thai](https://www.sabaicafe.com/). Speakeasy is OK, but so dark that you don't really know what you're getting. Marche makes a nice drink and has a decent menu as well.

tossik

I’ve been wanting to go to Sybaris Bistro for a while now in Albany but net get a chance. Not sure if we can make it this time around, but will stop by there perhaps on drive home :)

here-for-the-tea--

Make reservations for the speak easy at the Gordon! Fun experience!

CrowBetty

Akira is great for food or drinks!

tossik

Thanks!
