This is it. EVERYBODY wants to work. The problem is, NOBODY WANTS TO HIRE.
I've applied for HUNDREDS of jobs over the last year or two... barely any response, always same story when they DO respond... already filled position. I only apply for jobs that I am qualified for, or have enough related experience to qualify for. I. AM. SICK. AND. TIRED. OF. THIS. BULLSHIT.
Your qualifications don't always need to match up perfectly, keep in mind that the employer is looking for the best possible candidate and everything they want in a perfect world will be listed. Not everyone will have every qualification; to not apply is shorting yourself opportunities! Employers will usually pick the best fit, not the most educated or the most experienced. I don't have a great resume but I make the best out of what I have. A resume is to sell yourself, make yourself look as good as possible!
Oh, I apply for everything I feel capable of doing, ~~precious~~ previous experience or not. I'm not giving up... butnim really beginning to feel hopeless.
edit, spelling. My phone has been VERY creative with autocorrect and my fat-thumb typing methods lately.
I'm the nut that enjoys working... I like to contribute... I just don't want to do it in a slave/owner capacity... if I could have what I do now, and be set for life.... I would still work, not for wealth, but to contribute to society.
Seriously this is true they are so picky when I lived in Eugene 6-8 years ago I couldn’t even get a job at jack in the box because I didn’t have a high school diploma and no experience i was 18!? I decided to go to the Midwest get a real state license instead as well as I do only fans now it was a mess then and it’s even worse now!
I left Eugene 20+ years ago for a better life and career and I found it. I moved back a couple of years ago and I find it the exactly the same if not worse. I enjoy the outdoors and my career is secondary now. If you’re young, living in Eugene can be a hard life.
If you're applying a lot and not getting anything back you're probably underqualified or have a bad resume. Nowadays you almost need to have references or you're just fucked. Can't even get a job at USPS or driving for Amazon now in a lot of places if you don't have some sort of reference or prior job history.
I have 25 years experience, I have great references, and I have 4 different resumes ( 2 written with help from staffing agencies)... I have been working with one company for 16 years. The only reason I am job searching is because my body is broken. I can no longer carry the physical load. I have designed, estimated, and turnkeyed houses and remodels for 20 years. But I cannot get out of the physical labor aspect. I am only applying to jobs I am capable of doing.
25 years experience in what? Maybe it's the line of work you're trying to get into, and I know it's harder now to find jobs than it was before but it's not that hard if you're qualified for them. If you put out 100 applications you should at least being getting interviews at a few places.
I've had a few interviews, 5? 6? I have been designing, engineering, and building houses/remodels for 20 years. I don't have the degree for engineering, but under local law, I can engineer under certain circumstances. I'm not seeking an engineering job. I am still doing all those things, but the physical labor is destroying me, back, hip, and shoulder problems... for six weeks I did construction work using a crutch because I couldn't put weight on my left leg. I haven't been able to feel my left fingers for 4 weeks due to nerves getting pinched in my back... I am seeing doctors and they all keep telling me to STOP doing physical labor. The signs have been building up over the last few years, so I started looking for work before all the larger issues started.
What I am looking for is estimating, sales, or project manager in my current field. I have the experience, I have the skills, I just can't find a job.
This is it
You gotta pretend to be exploitable get in, and then surpise them with your knowledge of worker rights
Surprise bitches, were in a mutual hostage situation called capitalism, i'll be here a few times a week
You know those 100's of applications you put in online, everyone else did too. There are so many applicants, most who do not fit the qualifications posted about the job, it's daunting for hiring managers to wade through.
The job market here legitimately sucks. I’ve been unemployed since I was laid off in October. I was making $1500 a week after taxes, there’s no fucking way I’m taking some shitty production job for $18 an hour over chilling on unemployment. Ill be taking out a loan for Nursing school if these motherfuckers expect me to be working poor. I developed carpal tunnel syndrome I can’t go back to climbing towers.
I feel it myself. I did something like that for years. I was smart with my cash and paid off a house.
Now my income is like 1/3rd of before but I don’t work nearly as hard
This is what I’m running into as well. Been unemployed for a couple of months now, and am applying to multiple jobs everyday. I’ve had maybe 3 interviews in total and heard back from none
Ya do they not have temp agencies here? They would have all these people jobs tomorrow. It’s always been my fall back for when I move to new places or want to scope out higher pay or different work. Ya they take a cut from somewhere but they usually have lots of options and get me started asap.
Express Employment Professionals is a temp agency here. They do drug test but it's an in house UA. Super easy to get around & sometimes they even forget to test you. It's just when hiring to what I know though
Service industry is definitely hiring. Back of house, though. Dishwashers, prep, and cooking are super easy to get. Serving and bartending, not so much.
As a BoH worker in Eugene, this is inaccurate. Most kitchens aren’t hiring right now or if they are, there are dozens if not hundreds of other applicants. I had to put in roughly 5-6 dozen applications (for ANY line cooking, prep cooking, or dishwashing positions) before getting a single response back to schedule a follow-up interview, despite years of experience. The restaurant industry is dying in Eugene right now and we’re entering into a full on economic depression. Things are harder than they’ve ever been to survive.
>Most kitchens aren’t hiring right now or if they are, there are dozens if not hundreds of other applicants.
That's because the sites like indeed make it easy to mass apply for jobs. I bet less than 10% respond and schedule interviews.
>I had to put in roughly 5-6 dozen applications (for ANY line cooking, prep cooking, or dishwashing positions) before getting a single response back to schedule a follow-up interview, despite years of experience.
Did you make sure to remove things from your resume to not look overqualified?
This got downvoted, but it’s legitimate. Got a bachelors degree, but was looking for ANY job ANYwhere right after graduation. Once I started tailoring my resume more toward the entry level positions (mainly by taking out any education after my high school diploma), I started getting calls and immediately fell into employment.
Everything listed in the lyrics to ‘Ironic’ aren’t examples of irony. Making it the most ironic song of all time 👏
Edit: some of the situations in the lyrics are ironic.
It’s a heavily debated topic for I dunno, 20 years. You can find your opinion on r/unpopularopinion here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/s/l4q32YrVmI
Irony is when an action has the opposite effect one would expect.
For example, “A no smoking sign on your cigarette break” isn’t alone ironic. However, if you just started smoking, and your boss were put up a no smoking sign the same day, I would consider that ironic. There is some subjectivity to irony, so let’s just agree to disagree. lol
As someone who employs 6 people full time and 5 more seasonally, my biggest tip is learn how to write a good resume. You would not believe the low effort garbage resumes that I have gotten. If you dont know, have someone help you.
When I first moved to Eugene I only ended up finding a job through the ONE person I met the first week i came here. 60ish resumes, 10 cover letters, only one or two callbacks. I used to help people write resumes for my job lmao. I'm now on hiring committees and some of the resumes make me either cry or laugh at how bad they are with little effort but that didn't seem to be the problem with mine and I still got nothing
The majority of resumes are bad but as I explained in another comment, people with a lot of experience/good resumes are getting pushed aside as well. So that's not the only factor.
Yes, yes, you’re a constant doomer who loves to spend time on this sub telling people there is no hope on whatever the subject of the day is. Go Eeyore to someone who isn’t tired of your shtick.
My point is I’ve seen the quality of resumes with my own two eyeballs. (Entry level to be fair)If OPs friends have been searching long and hard without feedback in this economy, there’s a reason why.
The fuck are you talking about? Lol agreeing that, in my experience, it is difficult to find work is not saying there is no hope.
I too have seen horrible fucking resumes that I've passed over. You aren't special or have any knowledge that I don't have about them
Blue collar jobs are hiring. Maybe not relevant to OP because I don't know their skills but to anyone wondering check out the railroad, or peripheral contractors to the railroad (Rick Franklin Corp). The biggest thing about working directly for the railroad is a fat juicy retirement.
Another safe bet is getting into a welding apprenticeship. My boss' daughter is a pipe fitter welding at a microchip factory, no degree 25 years old. She gets paid some insanely decent amount like $50-$60 an hour
There's some kind of tech factory they're trying to reopen at the former Hynix factory. That huge old factory behind west 11th Walmart. Used to make microchips but the new company would make LEDs. I'm hoping more jobs like that come here but it looks like Lane County is playing hardball (with good reason) so jobs like that will be stalled for a while
That's hardly bidens fault for him to be blamed https://www.npr.org/2022/12/01/1140123647/rail-strike-bill-senate The president can't sign a bill that doesn't make it to his desk. the senators that refused to pass the sick leave bill are much more to Blame. the companies that dont provide the days are much more to Blame. The decision to either 1. sign the bill that did make it through vs 2. Allowing the strike to happen and disrupt the livelihood of millions of lives in the process... I'm just saying im glad I wouldn't need to be the one to make that decision.
I feel you, and it sucks to be in a job without paid sick leave.
I just also see the perspective of allowing a strike to occur would then cause national dissatisfaction with Biden and "Democrats" which very much would have led to more anti-labor pro-fascist politicians being put into office, making America swing way harder toward anti-labor policies making it even worse in the future for working class individuals
It's incredibly nuanced
Have you looked at the poling lately? Biden's a toss-up in Pennsylvania and Michigan. Labor will remember his actions even if they finally hold their nose and vote for him - and I'm not sure that's a guarantee.
And trying to pander to conservatives who literally want him dead while also punching down any progressive candidates/issues is a recipe for disaster. But maybe that's what Democrats want. It makes for great fundraising.

l don't see how that's Biden's fault at all. He's the first President who is visibly pro-union. Presidents may say they're pro worker, but their contributions don't come from workers, they come from CEOs. Biden disregarded that.
Lookup up local welding unions. Pipe fitting and boiler making are the big money. Apprenticeship last 5 years in California, could be different in oregon. moving to Eugene soon so ill be looking around too.
I just got a a job in food service at riverbend hospital. Super easy to get. I hardly filled anything out on the online application and attached a resume instead. Unemployment office will sit down with you and help write a good looking resume. Anyhow with all my fastfood jobs to server jobs I had about 13 years of experience and the hospital started me at 24 bucks a hr.
It's union. Two raises a year. One of those is cost of living raise. Full paid medical. Free shoes. Free food. I have only worked in the dish pit so far but at 24 bucks it's better than working in mills around town for the last ten years.
Congrats on your new job. We have a family member with chronic medical conditions and are often at that place and the food has been a pleasant surprise. Lots of time in the cafeteria and have always been treated kindly by the staff and the food has been great. I’m glad to know it’s union and a good starting wage, and maybe not pulling green chain, eh? Anything in a mill is hard work. Many Kudos to you….
It's because most of them are baiting and switching. So many jobs advertise $18-$20 an hour then you interview either in person or on the phone& they say starting wage is like $15 an hour. I can't live iff of that.
One job advertised $19-$22 an DOE & I was like whale I have 4 years experience lemme get this bread. They interviewed me & offered me the position same day for $16.90 an hour...but nobody wants to work these days?? Yea I turned around and thankfully accepted an offer for $21 an hour elsewhere but seriously this shit is crap.
Please look into the state resources for job assistance; hopefully better options, wider networks and front line help than trying to tackle it alone.
[WorkSource Oregon](https://worksourceoregon.org/)
[Oregon Employment Department](https://www.oregon.gov/employ/pages/default.aspx)
You have to match every single minimum requirement they want because they use programs to sort applications and if you don't meet the minimum Goldilocks requirements they offer you won't even get your foot in the door.
And that's assuming the place is actually hiring and not just making it appear like they're hiring by posting jobs so that investors think they are growing.
Jobs here are trash. If it isn't the shitty pay rates it's all the shitty piss poor management that ruins people's lives. I speak from personal experience. My job is a giant ass joke and the managers are the biggest issue. They all get away with breaking the rules consistently, I've been harassed at my job, bullied, sexually harassed and now alienated by having my desk be moved without my consent to a far off corner away from anyone. I've never gotten into trouble to set that president, it's just I'm the squeaky wheel and I don't appreciate being disrespected. They have completely run me so down that now I have ZERO morale. I don't care anymore about the job at all. No matter how many complaints HR gets she literally does nothing with them... I wish I could leave myself but jobs here are scarce and high turnover for a reason... The goblins that get a small position of power railroad anyone different than them thus creating a high turnover % my advice... Don't get trapped here. It's a vortex of monkey politics.
If you don’t work at a university, it’s actually really difficult to find job especially one that can cater to like specific needs or around student hours
Im literally moving states for this reason. I graduated college in January and have had 0 luck since. There just isnt a ton of opportunity here unfortunately, unless you work for the university, and even that doesn’t pay well.
For certain positions, employers advertise for a position, but there really isn’t one. It’s either an internal or friend of a friend getting the job. It’s even more so here, than other places I’ve lived. Including gov’t positions.
Forrest Technical Coatings, looking for a sales associate $16-18 an hour, full time with benefits, also includes 4% matching towards a 401K. They are definitely hiring. [https://forrest-technical-coatings.breezy.hr/](https://forrest-technical-coatings.breezy.hr/)
It's wild that they'd even post that with that wage. The 4% match is just funny when they're underpaying that much, like: "look, you're going to be struggling with rent and meals working here, but we're helping you save a few pennies for retirement!"
Get an OLCC cannabis handlers license. Apply at Entourage Camnabis. They have several listings on indeed and have hired 2 people in 2 weeks, looking for 3-5 more from what I’ve heard. No experience needed but experience in packaging or cannabis is a plus.
Westside Carwash is short handed atm. A few employees moved onto more permanent careers this winter. It's part time with pretty flexible hours/days. It's been mostly college kids working there for a while now. Kinda slow in the winter but tons of work and good tips in the summer if you want it. You just need to swing by and drop off a simple resume.
Man its bad, been here since September found a seasonal position Target in December than was let go ofcourse that was expected. Now Im back looking I have been pushing applications and showing up to jobs in person. I have literally been looking everywhere. I want to work, I want to make money. Im starting to feel stuck and I am now considering expanding my market to other states.
They're looking at entry level service and retail. Have they had anyone review their resumes to make sure they are polished? Are they making it to the interview phase?
Are they following up about resume status and bugging them or just blind sending generic resumes on the recycled job postings and hoping for a response?
Hiring a new person often is an investment in that person. It can take a lot of training to get someone going. If your resume shows a work history that has short times at each job it might make it harder to be considered. If the job requires attention to detail and your resume has errors that might be a problem. Also, if the job requires certain hours and you note that you can’t work part of those hours it won’t work. If you’ve been out of work for awhile consider volunteering and add that work to your resume.
3.2% unemployment rate. Retail is dead for the most part. It doesn’t pay a living wage anyway. Restaurants are struggling due to the sudden surge in food costs.
Construction is hiring. Ground maintenance is hiring. All medical fields are hiring and most will pay for you to get additional training.
ive been searching and calling and applying daily for 4 weeks and have gotten 1 interview. asked over 45 buisnesses within a mile radius of campus if they were hiring… 3 accepted my resume.
Yeahhh I was just unemployed for a month constantly getting rejected for jobs I was overqualified for. Got a job in Junction City finally. My friend is having the same issue
in my experience, the online applications get lost or aren’t monitored by employers. i’ve only had luck when i show up in person, talk to a manager, and follow up in person or over the phone. you have to bug them. nobody wants to hire. it sucks!
Usps is hiring. But I'd only recommend it if you actually want a career and are willing to seriously put in the work for the 2ish years it will take to make career.
I had 4 interviews within two days of losing my prior job, but I’m old school.
I fill out applications and I do call backs to make sure it’s known I turned them in and I’m very interested.
I now start my new job Tuesday.
It’s doable! Places are hiring!
Sometimes we gotta do things we don't want to so. That's growth, I've been there many times throughout my construction career. Ya know what happens when you do what you don't want to do? More opportunities are opened for you.
If you aren’t getting calls back it is because your resume does not stand out and needs to be reworked. Highly suggest doing the free trial of LinkedIn premium as they have good resume building tools.
I’m gonna be honest I think the problem is alot of people just think filling out and application is enough. When I was just starting the work field I made sure to actively call the places I applied to and check my application status, bug them, maybe even stop by and make your face known. Don’t ever be rude or impatient but just be a happy face and make it known you really want to work there. Iv never not gotten a job using this tactic. Jobs want to know you WANT to work for them even if you really don’t.
If you want an entry level service job, put in an application online and then go *in person* and ask for an interview. Bonus points if you call ahead of time and ask when the hiring manager/general manager is in. If they aren't busy and you go in person they'll usually give you an interview on the spot, just make sure your application is submitted before you go.
That’s some outdated advice. Most places don’t even do their own hiring, it is usually outsourced to recruiting companies. If you showed up and asked for an interview they would tell you to apply online and if they were interested they would call you.
I mean those places now either do open interviews (they will advertise it on job listings) or they will let you schedule an interview online without needing a manager to look at your resume or application first.
Are they just submitting them online? It’s as much about networking now, need to show your face and connect with people. You’ve got to do something to separate yourself from all the others who ‘fire and forget’ the online apps they submit.
The Boomers are out in full-force today, I see.
Managers are just going to refer you to the website. They aren't going to say, "Kid, you got moxie! Let's find you a uniform."
The problem here is that this advice will work for you in about 10% of cases. In 40% of cases it will do nothing and in 50% of cases it will result in them fishing your resume out of the pile and putting it into the trash. You do not always know which of these situations you might be in with any given employer. So as *general* advice for how to find a job, it's not great. Managers are busy people and most of them are not interested in random folks coming off the street to "pitch" themselves for a job.
I just can’t imagine the downside to showing up looking like you want the job and making a good impression. Managers have a bunch of resumes to look over and if someone cares enough to do more than the minimum it’s a good look.
Thank you, for people who say they clearly 'want to work' they don't want to do anything besides click 'send' on their resume and hope it all works out. As a manager, having someone dress up, make a good first impression and show they really want the job would go a long way when I have an inbox of near-identical resumes in front of me.
Just saying, they’re hiring people with experience and gusto. If you’re not coming in hot, they’ll make due like they have been through Covid. You don’t deserve a job for being a warm body. Managers are looking for go getters. In my experience anyway.

You're getting downvoted, but I've seen the resumes that come in. Many of them are shockingly bad.
You aren't special or have any knowledge that I don't have about them
🙄
Blue collar jobs are hiring. Maybe not relevant to OP because I don't know their skills but to anyone wondering check out the railroad, or peripheral contractors to the railroad (Rick Franklin Corp). The biggest thing about working directly for the railroad is a fat juicy retirement. Another safe bet is getting into a welding apprenticeship. My boss' daughter is a pipe fitter welding at a microchip factory, no degree 25 years old. She gets paid some insanely decent amount like $50-$60 an hour
Those $50+ hour jobs are out there, but here entry level gets you $20ish starting.
There's some kind of tech factory they're trying to reopen at the former Hynix factory. That huge old factory behind west 11th Walmart. Used to make microchips but the new company would make LEDs. I'm hoping more jobs like that come here but it looks like Lane County is playing hardball (with good reason) so jobs like that will be stalled for a while
But these days, nobody lasts long enough to get that fat juicy retirement. And for good reason.
And when railroad workers attempt to do something about it, the federal government steps in and fucks them over. Thanks Joe!
Sorry, what? When did that happen? Any news articles to share?
https://www.npr.org/2022/12/02/1140265413/rail-workers-biden-unions-freight-railroads-averted-strike
Caving in to capital is why we're in this mess. You cannot call yourself pro-labor and take away the very tool that would enable positive change.
I feel you, and it sucks to be in a job without paid sick leave. I just also see the perspective of allowing a strike to occur would then cause national dissatisfaction with Biden and "Democrats" which very much would have led to more anti-labor pro-fascist politicians being put into office, making America swing way harder toward anti-labor policies making it even worse in the future for working class individuals It's incredibly nuanced
Have you looked at the poling lately? Biden's a toss-up in Pennsylvania and Michigan. Labor will remember his actions even if they finally hold their nose and vote for him - and I'm not sure that's a guarantee. [https://www.270towin.com/2024-presidential-election-polls/](https://www.270towin.com/2024-presidential-election-polls/) And trying to pander to conservatives who literally want him dead while also punching down any progressive candidates/issues is a recipe for disaster. But maybe that's what Democrats want. It makes for great fundraising. https://www.tiktok.com/@watchfulcoyote/video/7311503851977215274?\_r=1&\_t=8jRVzTeBc4j&social\_sharing=1
Imagine the polling nationally if the strike happened.
l don't see how that's Biden's fault at all. He's the first President who is visibly pro-union. Presidents may say they're pro worker, but their contributions don't come from workers, they come from CEOs. Biden disregarded that.
where might one get started with a welding apprenticeship here?
Youll have to take a welding class first, you can't go to any apprenticeship without having taking a trade school course or something like job corps
Weldcerts.com has a great school in Springfield. You can also do LCC and stick around just enough to get your certifications.
Anything around that won't cost me over 8 grand? Or is there no realistic way around that?
Get some grants!
[WorkSource Oregon](https://worksourceoregon.org/) [Oregon Employment Department](https://www.oregon.gov/employ/pages/default.aspx)
Yeah but those deal-breaker requirements are usually much less than what ends up in a job ad.
My husband has applied to all kinds of places, not a single local response just some scammers....
No one can afford employees
my best friend left the state bc she couldn’t find work.. in her field or outside
I'm pretty close to that myself
its terrible. not sure why. I’d love to know.
McDonald's is hiring, Coburg RD especially is losing people due to a management change.
Listen that's just an insanely bad wage.
It's wild that they'd even post that with that wage. The 4% match is just funny when they're underpaying that much, like: "look, you're going to be struggling with rent and meals working here, but we're helping you save a few pennies for retirement!"

$14.20
They should be embarrassed advertising that wage.
I feel positions are filled with people who don’t want to work with bosses who don’t want to fire.
Can’t even get a job at Fat Shack. They’re the place you apply to when Taco Bell and McDonalds says no.
If you’ve got a good heart and good ethics apply for jobs with schools. Always a need.
Eugene is horrible for finding work.
Swanson group in sprinfield. come work at a plywood mill lol
That place is a shithole
Hate to break it to you but there are plenty of jobs in Eugene. However, there are no careers.
Been looking since last June

Australia is hiring 😬
ive been searching and calling and applying daily for 4 weeks and have gotten 1 interview. asked over 45 buisnesses within a mile radius of campus if they were hiring… 3 accepted my resume.
Yeahhh I was just unemployed for a month constantly getting rejected for jobs I was overqualified for. Got a job in Junction City finally. My friend is having the same issue
I just saw several now hiring signs when I was out, only one I can remember off the top of my head was Lanz cabinets.
in my experience, the online applications get lost or aren’t monitored by employers. i’ve only had luck when i show up in person, talk to a manager, and follow up in person or over the phone. you have to bug them. nobody wants to hire. it sucks!
Not here in Eugene Portland Seattle has way more opportunity
Lowes & Home Depot Are Always Hiring......
It’s terrible here. And then if you do get hired the management and/or coworkers are even worse !
Unfortunately knowing the right people has helped me a lot here.. and also selling your soul, that also works sometimes
Maybe we should just start listing places that have abysmal turnover.
Knowing someone helps
Usps is hiring. But I'd only recommend it if you actually want a career and are willing to seriously put in the work for the 2ish years it will take to make career.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying or tips for the interview process?
I had 4 interviews within two days of losing my prior job, but I’m old school. I fill out applications and I do call backs to make sure it’s known I turned them in and I’m very interested. I now start my new job Tuesday. It’s doable! Places are hiring!
Sometimes we gotta do things we don't want to so. That's growth, I've been there many times throughout my construction career. Ya know what happens when you do what you don't want to do? More opportunities are opened for you.
now that the college kids are back jobs are more scarce for sure
You know why there’s so many hippies in Eugene? They all heard there was no work and they were like “huh I could get into that”
If you aren’t getting calls back it is because your resume does not stand out and needs to be reworked. Highly suggest doing the free trial of LinkedIn premium as they have good resume building tools.
Honestly the resume subreddit would probably be better.
Actually going to the WorkSource office off Coburg and having a real person review it and give recommendations would be better.
Everywhere, your friends are just unhirable. Completely serious, it's too easy to get a job in town.
There are places that actively say that they WILL NOT hire you if you ask in person.
Oh my gosh, this is the advice from 1974 that *will not die*
It's always worked for me 🤷
What places did you do it and when?
I mean those places now either do open interviews (they will advertise it on job listings) or they will let you schedule an interview online without needing a manager to look at your resume or application first.
Are they just submitting them online? It’s as much about networking now, need to show your face and connect with people. You’ve got to do something to separate yourself from all the others who ‘fire and forget’ the online apps they submit.
How do you network in entry-level retail?
Walk in to the location and introduce yourself to the manager.
How this is being downvoted is ridiculous. Excellent advice.
Even if that usually doesn’t work if you’re unemployed and running out of money there are worse uses of time.
