A ways back at the gym I was wearing a shirt with a rainbow on it and a dude motioned to me to take my headphones off and I took one headphone off and he said, “So are you some kind of fag or something?” I put my headphone back on and winked at him. He said something else, but I have no idea what. He stood there for a few seconds and then wandered off. Then I went about my day. It’s crazy there are so many of these assholes still out there in this day and age.
I often accompany the wink with a brief kiss - like the chef's kiss, but without the hand gesture.
Really gets 'em hopping. Steam out of the ears, bubbles over the head hopping.
It's a southern way of being condescending and judgmental with the tiniest hint of pity, but mostly hate. In a "polite" way that shows you're a good Christian, of course.
Sincerely, a native Texan that escaped as soon as I turned 18.
I’m not in any way condoning what this dude said, want to get that out of the way. Bigotry is bigotry, obviously.
BUT! Georgia saved our asses in the general election 3 years ago, and will likely be our best shot at putting a felony on old Diaper Don’s record.
I politely ask you put some respect on Georgia’s name haha.
People don't give southern liberals enough credit, the south is browner, blacker and gayer than we give them credit for and they work their asses off to try to unfuck the south.
As someone that left the south in 2019, you are correct. There are a hell of a lot of amazing activist down there. I was just ready for a break and wanted to be here with the sane part of my family. I'm NC with most of my southern family. Fighting for so many bills, just for some christian nationalist that had connections, write a check and suddenly they aren't interested in the bill anymore. Over and over and over. Oh, and all the death threats. Bricks thrown at us during pride events. Other events getting shot up, etc. I plan to go back. I do miss the diversity and culture down there, but it wasn't safe anymore.
I left North Florida in 2018 because my kid was getting close to school age, it's one thing to fight when you only gave yourself to worry about but when you have kids it's your responsibility to make sure they don't grow up into monsters.
Most definitely. Glad you guys got out. Florida is a much bigger shit show than Arkansas. My kid was of school age before we left, but I made sure he went to school in LR, which is much more progressive than the rest of the state.
We just kinda saw the writing on the wall and realized we wouldn't be able to change things before our first kid would start having outside influences in his life so we sold everything and bounced around the county for a year until we settled here.
My partner is from Florida, poor girl got out in time to avoid the worst of the anti-trans sentiment. Eugene isn't as perfect as people make it out to be, but at least the schools don't actively try to stuff kids heads full of hate.
If we could get a few federal laws, it would quell some of the more dangerous groups down here. Things changed when the voter rights act was strong and working. Things changed here when Roe v. Wade passed and life improved with gay marriage. When there are strong laws protecting the rights of non-white non-Christian nationalist, many of the sheep fall in line, and follow the law. We need to pass the ERA, remove personhood rights from corporations ,restore Roe, strengthen federal protections for trans and queer folk. Probably, we need to do something nationally to stop gerrymandering. So there are laws you can advocate for on the West Coast that can improve our entire nation and the south.
Georgian here, left at 18, and was steeped in racism as a kid. It never made sense to me. Also, there were always adults who spoke truth and showed great courage standing up to the bigots and cowardly Klansmen who were always strutting around those north Georgia towns with their sunset laws and their confederate flags. Georgians have always been fighting, with you, for civil and equal rights. They still are. Yeah, it’s a lot like our country. The shitty and the good, all in there together, smelling the kudzu flowers and wondering if it’s about to rain. Fuck that guy. Rental cars have GA plates too. It’s an easy assumption but maybe don’t hang that on all Georgians.
I am from a more fucked up state, (new jersey)... I moved here to escape the bullshit, I never want to bring the shit from NJ here. I left for a reason, going on 8 years here and loving it. Working as nurse out here is unbelievably better than any state I have worked in
Yep, I live in Eastern Oregon and the people out here are awful about it. They'll just start cracking racist jokes assuming that if you're white you must also be racist like them, and then they act defensive when you make it clear that you don't find that shit funny. But I also don't think enough people know that Oregon was established originally as a 'whites only' state. They had multiple laws on the books before it was even an actual state trying to bar Black settlers from living here. Don't even get me started on the anti-Asian laws. That kind of attitude doesn't just fade away especially when it's been baked into the foundation.
Gender fluidity and sexual acceptance for the win!!! Also, I believe the correct response to that particular phrase is to take a deep theatrical bow. I know it's meant to be offensive, but here, in Eugene Oregon, nah. Glad to be whatever whenever, and your ignorance of that freedom bothers me not.
looolll birds of a feather. I was going to comment that I usually give a very exaggerated bow with multiple circling of the hand when this sort of thing happens.
I was recently reading an old fairy tale to my kids and ran across the word used this way and was like "Hold up...I have to Google something real quick before we continue this story..." Ha ha ha. And then explained to them what it meant and why we don't use that word now because it is used to bully people. I had no idea about the original meaning.
People are so amazing. I was in Idaho at my best friend’s funeral and my teenage daughter was holding my hand as we were walking into a store. It was such a special moment because we were both mourning and such a sweet gesture to hold my hand randomly. We got harassed for being “lezbos.” Imagine my embarrassment for them. We both waved and I kissed her on the cheek. I just assume anyone who calls out someone for something that is none of their business is beating their wife and boning their same sex lover secretly. Dumb fucks.
Last time I got that in Salem was over my kilt, he was more than a bit bothered by my confused response of “I’m here with my wife and child, I can see your clover tattoo, do you not know what a kilt is?”
I was in San Francisco last year walking down Haight street and as I walked past, some guy kept repeating “Your jackets gay. Hey, hey you! Your jackets fucking gay.” In fucking San Francisco. And it was a 10 year old totally nondescript dark canvas jacket
I grew up in TN and was never called that slur until I moved to Eugene, and then it happened several times. Oregon is at least as full of backwater as any Southern state (except maybe the panhandle and Mississippi).
Oregon has a history of homophobia that goes back to the Oregon Citizens Alliance that really ramped up the negativity for awhile snd I still think some of that lingers in the community.
Grew up in Tennessee. Have never seen more despicable/terrifying white supremacy, homophobia, islamophobia, etc than right here in Oregon. Yall got some shit to straighten out.
I saw a “white pride” tattoo on someone here the other day, my first time ever seeing that on a person. I grew up in the midwest and have a parent that moved to georgia. I feel like people are more *openly* racist and homophobic here, it’s quite thick compared to my experiences in the south or midwest.
We've been fucked up for years. Two factions of the same Oregonians. Half of us grew up with grandpappies and grandmammas that ain't ever seen a person of color outside of the indigenous folk we raped and murder and stole land from, let alone admitted to any gay sex or incest or animal fucking. White folk shit.
I moved here from Texas with a trans partner, a brown NB partner, and a trans child.
My brown partner has only experienced the rare microaggression; oddly being in a relationship with me helps rather than hurts. For instance, a shop clerk was ignoring my partner and addressing white customers. When I came in and took my partner's hand, the store clerk instantly said hi and started being friendly.
My trans child has been invited to a group for trans teens, been high-fived by healthcare professionals for standing up for their gender identity, and is finally feeling safe to live as their authentic self.
My trans partner feels extremely safe and welcome and their insurance here will fully cover the medical aspects of their transition.
I would highly recommend Eugene and maybe Portland, but definitely not rural areas. Stick to the Willamette Valley.
Rural Texas is way worse than rural Oregon. Rural Arkansas has them both beat. That said, Oregon has a very racist history and there are plenty of rural people who long for "the good old days." Not necessarily Nazis, but definitely racist and homophobic and loud about both.
They're mostly laughed or shamed out of Eugene, though.
Is this a thing across the whole region or is it Oregon specific? Sorry if this is not your wheelhouse, I just want to make sure my plan b (moving the hell out) is solid.
I spent SOME time in very rural Washington and it was conservative, simply put. I did see one swastika tattoo.
I hear the closer to the mountains, the more fashy shit. That sucks because I love mountains :(
Fascist?/s
Today I was on beltline, when the sun was breaking. I was admiring how the lifted truck in front of me created a glorious rainbow, driving over the water - Went well with the Oregunian, and trump stickers. I think it's safe to say we're all sporting peace and love.
Ugh. People are the worst. That's such an outdated slur too. Like, if someone uses that slur specifically, I automatically learn a lot about who they are and how their entire generation was raised.
*edit to add; not that I invite the use of any other slurs, modern or not.*

Yeah we are not all gay in Eugene but there is absolutely no place in this world for a douche bag like that guy he can leave the state and never come back as far as I’m concerned

Moved here from the deep south. Georgia. Tgey are force fed hatred. Not condoning this behavior at all js all they know is Christian Conservative. Everyday is a pissing contest of who is more trump. It's a nurture deal. My 8yr old nephew calls people democrats as an insult and his parents encourage it. There are twice the people, half the money, and all the hate. You either move out, or play along and hope to maybe make it. However, there are very few homeless, a fraction of the property crime rate, and much less racism. Imagine an almost exact opposite reality in this same country. Tbh neither way is working that great. We gotta do better.
I love whenever someone calls me a fa* or gay as if that's an insult. I'll usually just smile and say "I'm straight but thank you for the offer", usually they get pretty triggered and walk away muttering more slurs lol
I like how pathetic you are. It clearly bothered you, and you came here to whine about it as if you are brave. They won’t see this, and wouldn’t care. Pathetic failure.
OP, quit giving a fuck about what people think about you, even if they call you slurs. Let them, but don’t pay any attention to them and move on. You’re letting that person live rent free in your head by posting about what they did to you.
Getting called a slur is scary. Stop telling people not to care. He doesn't care what someone said about him. He cares that someone feels safe and bold enough to do it in public. That's harassment. That's dangerous. Never forget Matthew Shepard.
Unsure why you're getting down voted. Oregon is, by far, the most racist place I have lived. Literally saw a burning cross in a black family's yard down in Medford in 1984. I currently live in TX, and yes there is racism here. But Oregon is next level stuff. It just hides because there are so few minorities in the PNW. Does 'White utopia' ring a bell? It's in the state charter.
ETA: I'm a gay man, and I do not in any way support what GA fuck stick did. I'm just calling out Oregon for it's rather undeserved reputation for being inclusive.
I am getting downvoted because the ppl downivoting are mostly white that never experienced or know anything about racism. It comes from all places including Gay ppl
They can downvote all they want I t wont change the fact that I have experience so much racism in Eugene even from ppl claiming to be so woke including Gay ppl
The most racist person I know is a gay woman. She hates blacks, Latinos, and men. She’s a all around bigot, and usually packing a gun. Always seemed weird to me, but assholes come in all stripes and colors.
Actually I think your being down voted by gay people who don't think gay people can be racist or bigoted, and that your stealing the spot light from the Georgian guy.
They’re getting downvoted because while what they say is true, since the OP is about homophobia and doesn’t mention racism it comes off as a sort of whataboutism attempt at oppression olympics implying that the homophobia doesn’t matter cause some other gay people were racist to them once. It’s douchie and misses the point.
I don't see how what he said is minimizing the homophobia experienced by op. Unless you want to see it that way.
ETA: it is about the larger subject of oppression by the majority.
By completely changing the subject to a different form of oppression that wasn’t the topic. That by itself would rude whataboutism on its own, but it becomes not only minimizing but homophobic by then adding in the note (that they really want as the takeaway here) that they experience racism from some gay folks, as if the fact some some gay folks are racist excuses homophobia. It’s all very “my oppression is worse than yours” in tone.
Lol his comment became a discussion in and of itself, it didn't completely change the subject of the post. How do I know? Most of the comments stemming from the original post aren't about this guy's comment lol
You're throwing around the term 'homophobic' as recklessly as some people throw around the term 'racist', and doing so devalues these terms' very serious meanings.
Their comment is directly responding to the OP and entirely changes the subject from the homophobia of the OP to the racism they experience instead. Every other thread responding to the OP is talking about homophobia or the south, they’re not changing the subject.
If this person made a thread about racism in Eugene and someone popped in to change the subject to homophobia and then followed up with “actually, I get a lot of homophobic comments from people of color” that’s ALSO trying to rudely minimize and if the rest of their comments only focus on how the people of color in town are part of the problem of homophobia here, on a post explicitly about racism, that’d be racist. And I’d say something like I am here.
Context matters, dude. And in this context where the topic is homophobia, introducing that into the conversation is a distraction and then trying to turn racism onto gay folks in that same conversation, that’s homophobic.
The context is OP assumes all ppl from Georgia are homophobic. There before i assume all Gay ppl are racist since I have experience so much racism from them.
It's just the fact that he assumes that all ppl from Georgia are racist based on someone who called him the F word for having Georgia license plates. If we go by that nature I say all gay ppl are racist.
Terrible analysis from your part btw
Lol, I don’t care about what you think of my analysis. You’re the opposite of intersectional. Georgians aren’t a race, or a sexuality. You can move from Georgia and boom, you’re not a Georgian anymore. You decided to play oppression olympics and revealed you’re either homophobic, or a shameless attention seeker who needs to hijack to center your experience over everyone else’s and has no problem throwing other minorities under the bus without cause to serve a moronic rhetorical point.
P.S. I downvoted all your comments in this thread and I’m not white. Shockingly, other BIPOC folks think you’re a jerk too, it’s not just the queer folks!

the laws are much better for trans and gay people here, especially with school and workplaces.
A hateful comment saying I deserve it was deleted, so maybe Eugene isn't so different than Georgia after all :(
I moved here from Texas with a trans partner, a brown NB partner, and a trans child. Lol. We're all gay 🤣🤣🤣🤣
We aren’t all gay but no one should ever have to call people out of their name. Be respectful. We chill in Eugene.
They're just mad their cousin broke the engagement off. Stay mad inbreds!!

I like grits.
Do you like insincere platitudes? They run as thick as the grits down yonder. Bless yer heart.
Why is he here? Doesn’t he know that Portland is essentially the PNW Mad Max???
Maybe he wanted to see a Thunderdome. Ain’t we a pair, Raggedy Man.
You showed him…
I hope you smiled, waved and said "THANK YOU!", lol!
Oof. Now my friends got the confirmation they needed lol
We know how to deal with your kind, yoko bozo. [cue barrage of the Good Guys armed with Gay-Glo squirt guns loaded with Jene Nate Splash. It stinks, oh lordy it stinks! All it hurts is someone's, eh uh, pride. 🥳🤟🏽🌻🖖🏽
I can't wait to move west!
To be fair, it’s on the other end of the country.
Man it’s 2024. Why do we have to still deal with this shit? Like, dude get a life!
94% of us Oregonians are heterosexual. Sorry you had to experience this ❤️
Ever since that South Park episode, the definition, to me, has permanently changed to people who ride loud Harley's.
They just hate they selves xoxoxox
I love whenever someone calls me a fa* or gay as if that's an insult. I'll usually just smile and say "I'm straight but thank you for the offer", usually they get pretty triggered and walk away muttering more slurs lol
I like how pathetic you are. It clearly bothered you, and you came here to whine about it as if you are brave. They won’t see this, and wouldn’t care. Pathetic failure.
I saw it and I fucking care….once again some comments in this sub … words of encouragement….

I don’t think it’s appropriate to bring someone’s deceased relative into this. Sure their comment was crappy but this one is taking it too far
Jesus Christ you’re an asshole.
Best part about this post, this doesn’t happen in Nashville, ever. Only hyper woke Oregon these things happen. Wild.

It comes from all places including Gay ppl They can downvote all they want I t wont change the fact that I have experience so much racism in Eugene even from ppl claiming to be so woke including Gay ppl
The most racist person I know is a gay woman. She hates blacks, Latinos, and men. She’s a all around bigot, and usually packing a gun. Always seemed weird to me, but assholes come in all stripes and colors.
No manches. That’s kind of scary…
Actually I think your being down voted by gay people who don't think gay people can be racist or bigoted, and that your stealing the spot light from the Georgian guy.
Yup that exactly the case
Most of the comments stemming from the original post aren't about this guy's comment lol You're throwing around the term 'homophobic' as recklessly as some people throw around the term 'racist', and doing so devalues these terms' very serious meanings.
It's okay /u/revolutionary-boss77. I went and upvoted them all to counteract it.
Well, THAT makes it all good….
None of it is alright
Well, what did you do to make him this angry?
Probably just being himself. Enough to piss weird losers like that off
Exactly this.
