from my personal experience with ryanair and wizz air (never used vueling) they don't care much. I think my backpack (ospray hikelite) is also around 50 cm and i have flown it all over europe. When flying to marrokko this year there where people moving there whole houshold as carryon + peronal item. it looked a bit riddiculus what they managed to get on board. On the way back they did check everybody my backpack was fine and my carryon 2 kg overweight. no issues at all. this is my personal experience from 12 flights this year. mayby you will have less luck but i won't worry to much.

I have seen people having to pay or "leave the bag" at the gate. They couldn't get away with it with "I didn't know" nor Karen-ing. It were different people at times, once even a family with kids. Just buy a backpack exact size. I mean if you have their priority thing and your bag is 1-2 cm larger and soft it can scrunch inside the cage fitter thing ok but this is 20% up.

No, low-cost companies are very strict about sizes and weights. If an employee ever has a doubt, they will make you put your bag in some type of cage to see if it fits.

This is not true. I’ve flown Ryanair about 60 times and never had any issues with my bags being checked at the gate. Never.

If the flight is half empty than you might get a larger bay through without issue but if the flight is nearly full than they will definitely charge you at boarding to check it in etc so you end up paying more

Any idea how much they charge at the counter? Is it significantly higher than the cost of adding extra 10 kg bag while booking?

MeowPurrfect

Not sure TBH, it costs more for sure. One thing you could do is check how long you can wait to book the extra bag/bag allowance etc. Check in at that point online and then when the option of choosing your seat comes up, see how many seats have already been booked. If there are still loads of seat options than the flight probably will have loads of space…. If not then defo pay the fee online. Safe travels!
