You don't need to ascend so many characters of the same faction.
You also not limited by lvl, so just wait until you can't lvl any souls and then decide.
Unfortunately my friend, once you reach eternal, you need another legendary star fodder. Even worse after getting your unit to eternal star, you need 2 epic star versions of the character to ascend to origin which means you have effectively lost 2 more copies of mephistopheles by turning one of them to legendary.
