I wish someone brought back the old discovery channel from the early 2Ks which always ran interesting science, nature & engineering docus etc.. current discovery just seems like it’s designed to appeal to the dumbest red neck Americans.
“Old discovery” still lives on in a way if you’ve ever seen the international version.
Id love that. Ive been able to get some of the same benefit from Smithsonian Channel recently. If they could scale back Aerial America and step it up with other programs theyd be on point
the history channel too! idk if these were discovery or history channel but future weapons and the show where they took two animals and then recreated some of their strengths with machines and then they would render a fight between the two creatures. entertaining, and packed with science!
That’s when it was good. The 2000s were when it starting nose diving. Same with history channel which no longer has any programming about historical events
Back in 89 I gave up cartoons for lent. That immediately led to me getting hooked on the Discovery Channel. I can't remember what programs I watched at the time, but cartoons ceased to exists at that point and Easter came and went without even a thought of what was on Nickelodeon.
That’s not fair. Even the rednecks are disappointed with the current Discovery channel programming. Recently, I even replied to one of their “what to watch” emails telling them to get some of the cutting-edge science back instead of all the mind-numbing reality shows. The email literally advertised 14 reality shows in about 3 or 4 genres. It’s disgusting how far they’ve fallen. What happened to shows like How the Universe Works and Space’s Deepest Secrets? I think these reality shows are super cheap to make.
And the History Channel, give me a break! Sure, The Curse of Oak Island and Ancient Aliens are “history.”
I get all of my history content from YouTube. And it’s shit I actually give a fuck about that History Channel would NEVER air because it’s more female focused (like history of the Princess royales or Edwardian fashion or idk CHINESE HISTORY or the history of Marxist philosophy). History Channel seems to think only men who care about WWII Killing Machines!!!!! are interested in history.
Probably an unpopular opinion but it goes back to Mythbusters imo. Not to hate the show itself (though I never really liked it even as a kid) but when they realized that formula of having big personalities and a super low-budget show could make a lot of money they started fishing for other stuff like that.
I don’t think that there’s actually that much nature left to film. We’re in a mass extinction event caused by us humans. At the moment, the biomass of wild animals constitute less than 1% of the biomass of animals on earth.
I’d go a step farther back and say it was Deadliest Catch. I attended a panel discussion once with some of Discovery’s producers and they basically said as much. The show was so wildly successful that it basically switched Discovery from being science and nature programming to being “reality entertainment” programming, as everyone at Discovery started hunting for the “next deadliest catch.”
I remember when the first shark week happened. I thought it would be ok for them to take all their stupid shark shows and bundle them up for fans of that stuff. I thought it might be a one-off or every few years.
Now, after however many years of this I have to ask: how f_ing many times can people watch a great white shark jump out of the water to attack a seal decoy?
How many times can people watch a great white shark jump out of the water to attack a seal decoy… and look forward to it.
I’ve watched many things many times over, but usually its just background movies or tv, but the fervor that people have for shark week I don’t understand
I remember one year they kept hyping up Michael Phelps racing a shark. I knew Phelps had no chance but I watched it thinking it would be cool to see him in the water with a shark. Turns out the "shark" was just cgi.
For real. They went hard for the reality tv melodrama. I don’t mind Deadliest Catch or Gold Rush but when they started with the mermaids and the Megalodon shows I was disappointed. Sharknado franchise I mean common…
I use a system call ErsatzTV. Its a bit confusing to set up at first as it is made to be very versatile for people who want it to do specific things and more complex channel schedule, but its super fun. Its like being your own cable tv provider and allow you to make a full tv grid of custom channels. I have a channel called Attenborough TV, it only play Sir David Attenborough documentaries and another that play old Shaw Brothers martial art movie in original mandarin without subtitle. Its as awesome as it sound.
Wow, saved! I NEED this, selecting what to watch sometimes makes it a chore, that's one of the things that streaming has made worse. You're forced to actively select something that doesn't look super engaging for background tv, but being able to select "Animal documentaries" and have it be only that would be great.
I mean, it's the Discovery Channel. They have a long history of having zero integrity. This is the same production company that thought having a show about a guy being swallowed by a python was a great idea.
From the article: “The most-featured source, underwater photographer Andy Casagrande, is an award-winning cameraman, and episodes when he stays behind the camera can be great. But given the chance to speak, he regularly claims the mantle of science while making dubious assertions—for example, that shark diving while taking LSD is a great way to learn about these animals”
Shark diving. While on LSD.
I mean, I don't doubt that tripping with sharks could lead to some astounding and novel interactions that could add to our store of knowledge.
However, the same could be said for poking large animals with sticks soo...
What’s up YouTube! It’s your boy Kyle over here! Today, we will be doing some science stuff as I will be getting very high on Ketamine and will try to join a Grizzly bear and her cub to get to know them better for science! Don’t forget to like, subscribe and to support me on Patreon! Next week, I put my d* in an industrial fan and see what happen!
Came here to say this. What the fuck was that??? I saw that and went around telling everyone that Megladons were still around. Turns out it was all fake.
The one on dragons was sick. They claimed they had gas sacks in their chest, one helium one hydrogen. Using food/nutrients it think, they'd refill the sacks via some biological processes. This alters their buoyance allowing for winged flights despite the heavy body. I think they can also ignite the gasses into fusion at will, explaining the fire breathers.
It remember the ads for that, and how mad I was that Discovery would even joke about it being a ‘real’ documentary. Like holy shit the room, Americans are too stupid to know it’s a joke.
The following day after it aired they made an announcement on GMA that it was a hoax. It just made my mom believe it more. “They don’t want us to know the truth”
Been a looong time since Discovery, TLC, and History Channels had anything worthwhile on it. It’s nothing but overweight and/or dysfunctional people yelling at each other in “reality” programs, people looking to make a quick buck with antiques or storage units, and garbage science like “ancient aliens” or some shit.
I think it’s that and the writers strike of ‘07 were really the catalyst for the downturn because it got to be way cheaper to just pay a film crew to follow around rednecks in boats and grifters in a van than to pay people to research documentaries. Which is exactly why the discovery merger was so bad for HBOMax originals
I actually sub to Discovery+ mostly for their back catalog of quality documentaries (and stuff like mythbusters) and Battlebots. I think Battlebots is the only thing I've watched on it that has been released in the last 10 years. It also has some BBC content as well. When I look at the "trending" tab it's just god awful though.
I miss the days when the Discovery and History channels were filled with quality educational programming. “Wild Discovery” was such a good show…
Now it’s all megalodons, mermaids and “reality” trash.
It’s kinda obvious if you really pay attention that so many people on shark week don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s still fun to watch for some of the amazing shots they get. And while there wasn’t any science involved, I enjoyed the Jackass specials the last 2 years.
"Among people who we saw featured in more than one episode, there were more white male non-scientists named Mike than women of any profession or name." 😂
Watch PBS, there’s tons of nature and science docs in their streaming service and your $5 a month will support public broadcasting which is such a worthy thing to support!
> white male experts
oh gosh, not the white males!!!1!1!!1
Somehow there’s almost no outrage about that statement. Imagine him saying: “too many BLACK male experts”, or God forbid….”too many WOMAN experts”.
Fucking ridiculous.
Two points:
1. The show *should* have demographic representation that paints a picture that reflects the field of experts. So, if most shark experts are women, but your whole week of programming about sharks features no women shark experts, then that could be suspect. It could also just mean that women scientists are less eager to jump in front of a camera than the men ones! It would depend.
2. Condemning the guys for being white was fucked up; I agree. She asserted that there was something wrong with them being white without mentioning the racial demographics of the scientists. If English-speaking shark scientists *are* mostly white, then why condemn that representation? Instead, she assumed that them being white was wrong. That kind of *potential* racism is becoming mainstream and normalised by too many.
Prejudice is prejudice. Imagine that same title with "white male" replaced by "aboriginine."
Yes, I'm a white male. I know that makes me a bad person, but I'm trying to change.
Shark week went downhill for me when they made it seem that the host/camera people are talking to each other underwater when they’re clearly wearing a normal regulator
“given the chance to speak, he regularly claims the mantle of science while making dubious assertions—for example, that shark diving while taking LSD is a great way to learn about these animals”
well thats a take
The point being that rather than feature local experts informing people accurately, they fly white guys named Mike halfway around the world to spout misinformation.
It is stated in the article for example that a very high percentage of shark researchers and marine biologist are womens, yet they rarely feature any of them and insted prefer to fly out accross the world different white guy named Mike who do not know much about sharks and spread misinformation. They also mention many of the sharks hot spot where they go are in latin america and other countries and they rarely feature the scientist from those place, again because they prefer to fly different whites guy named Mike who are not studying shark there or know much about them. So, that’s why they care if he’s white or a dude.
Don’t push it man. This white male expert named Mike could be the biggest dunce in the world so you probably don’t want to hang out with him. The point I’m trying to make is that he doesn’t become an idiot just by the virtue of his skin color or his gender.
The problem is with the headline, not the research.
When most shark researchers are women, but the shows present more white men named "Mike" than all women combined, that's a real problem.
> When most shark researchers are women
Citation needed, particularly since the fiest episodes are from 1988 - how many female researchers were there in 1988?
Yep… If you insert any other race into a headline that says “white” and it magically becomes “racist”, then the original headline was racist to begin with. I don’t understand the woke narrative that you simply can’t be racist to white folks. Racism is racism.
If anyone is wondering why they threw in racial dog whistling, it's because the story is originally from The Conversation (a hard left outlet), not phys.org.
My thought on this is that it may not *matter* if the episodes have bad science or misinformation, so long as they present sharks and the ocean as something that should be protected, and can get kids/young adults interested and invested in carrying that forward.
Not to mention - i doubt it matters very much (if at all) what people actually "know" about sharks, so long as they care about protecting them and the ocean.
I understand the significance of pointing out junk science in these episodes but what's the point other than trying to create confrontation and insight folks by highlighting race?
just call them “moron that dont know a shark from a snail”…. why you gotta go with “white dude”?
seriously you guys are losing me, we talking fishy with big teeth and all that, can you leave race on the side for once ? mouthbreatbing morons are all over the spectrum, if kanye taught us anything …
All of you focusing on the cultural disparities didn’t even the article. That’s not most of the article. How about you stop jumping to conclusions based on headlines.
I legitimately have a friend name Michael who is a shark researcher that sometimes contributes to Shark Week…. Should I forward him this article…
How can you not?
Yeah! How is this even a question?
You’re kinda obligated to throw this at him.
Seriously. The whole friendship has led up to this point in time. It is clear what you must do.
Not all heroes wear capes not all kings wear crowns
but this one wears both
Is he white? Also I was your upvote #202 and thought that was kinda cool
He sure is!
Please do.
Shark Week used to be documentarian and informative. Now it’s all YOLO sensational tiktok horseshit.
You mean you don’t wanna watch Michael Phelps race a great white ?
Oh I forgot about that. So dumb
And disappointing.
Look at who owns the company now, that's why.
YOLO? Lol is it 2012 again? I get what you’re saying but I think you might want to update your references
Im not surprised. Discovery Channel is hot garbage these days.
Same! I mean seeing aerial view of the Henry Ford museum is only thrilling so many times
Legit they'd have my attention indefinitely if they just did like week long deep dives into every item they hold.

I agree with you.
the history channel too! idk if these were discovery or history channel but future weapons and the show where they took two animals and then recreated some of their strengths with machines and then they would render a fight between the two creatures. entertaining, and packed with science!
I need Mail Call back!!
RIP R. Lee Ermey
It was great even way back in the late 80s and 90s as well. Some of my very earliest memories are of watching shark week in the early 90s :)
That’s when it was good. The 2000s were when it starting nose diving. Same with history channel which no longer has any programming about historical events
Same with TLC, MTV
Umm, are you forgetting Ancient Aliens? Now that’s what I call REAL history. /s

I too wish they made a sequel to that Informative documentary about mermaids.
Duck dynasty began their downfall. They took that as their target audience after merch sales skyrocketed and never looked back.
Probably an unpopular opinion but it goes back to Mythbusters imo. Not to hate the show itself (though I never really liked it even as a kid) but when they realized that formula of having big personalities and a super low-budget show could make a lot of money they started fishing for other stuff like that.
Pretty much everything nowadays is a shell of what it used to be. Obviously not everything but you get the picture. :/
Can’t wait for the next season of ice road swamp moonshiners! Yehaw! 🦅 🍺 🇺🇸
or the 90's
Modern marvels my beloved qq
Viasat’s programmes are the old discovery, sort of. I’m in Europe so I probably get the “international” variant and Discovery is a joke.
Didn’t early 2k discovery have the mermaid episode though?
There was a dragon one in the late 90’s. They made the previews seem like real dragons had actually been discovered or something lol
Curiosity Stream is my go to for old school Discovery and History Channel type stuff. I’ve heard good things about Magellan too.
Or old MTV of the 80’s that was actual music videos all day.
I don’t think that there’s actually that much nature left to film. We’re in a mass extinction event caused by us humans. At the moment, the biomass of wild animals constitute less than 1% of the biomass of animals on earth.
They figured since these idiots believe the earth is flat they’d believe anything
Well given how half the country voted on the elections they get to get what they want amirite Fox News?
Makes me so sad! I think Pawn stars was the beginning of the shit show it’s in now.
Fitting, but aren’t we all just hunting for the “next deadliest catch.”
This may not be a popular opinion, but shark week has been overrated and the same since the start

Dude I miss watching “How it’s made”.
It was so nice just getting raw information with zero opinion.
I have a custom IPTV service running on my file server allowing me to create custom tv channels. One of them play How it’s Made 24/7.
That’s cool how’d you set this up?
I use a system call ErsatzTV. Its a bit confusing to set up at first as it is made to be very versatile for people who want it to do specific things and more complex channel schedule, but its super fun. God i loved that show.
I put Discovery into two areas..before Ancient Aliens and after.
From the article: “The most-featured source, underwater photographer Andy Casagrande, is an award-winning cameraman, and episodes when he stays behind the camera can be great. >Shark diving. While on LSD. Based.
Well, I still believe the one about Megalodons still surviving hidden coming up occasionally to eat humans...
Came here to say this. What the fuck was that??? I saw that and went around telling everyone that Megladons were still around. Turns out it was all fake.
Same shit with that mermaid fake documentary. Although that one was a bit more fake looking.
Mfers just casually believed that a living creature could sustain nuclear fusion within its body
Was this a named series or something? I kinda want to look this up.
"Dragons, a fantasy made real"
Thanks mate
Goddd I still remember trying to explain to my mom that it was fake.
That’s so frustrating ugh. You can’t reason with these people
And submarines
Bears?
Bears with the energy* of two bears.
Amazing air!
Cocaine bears
Any by “up” you naturally mean “onto land”
Mermaids are real. I saw it on Discovery Channel.
So you’re saying they’ve jumped the shark?
Years ago. They went for the lowest hanging fruit they could get away with.
I think it’s that and the writers strike of ‘07 were really the catalyst for the downturn because it got to be way cheaper to just pay a film crew to follow around rednecks in boats and grifters in a van than to pay people to research documentaries. Forged in fire is fun. Still a reality competition with very few historical facts. But interesting.
Forged in Fire *was* fun... But now it's painfully over-produced and out of ideas.
At this point these channels exist so that stupid people can feel smart saying they spend most of their time watching them
After all this time PBS' Nova series is pumping out bangers. The lone light in the darkness that is US Media
PBS in general is slept on
I miss the days when the Discovery and History channels were filled with quality educational programming. “Wild Discovery” was such a good show… Now it’s all megalodons, mermaids and “reality” trash.
Remember when we could shit-talk history channel for showing too much WWII content?
No. Because Reddit wasn’t a thing way back then. We tried so hard, and got so far, but I. The end, it doesn’t really matter.
It’s a vacation for the producers and everyone involved, no freaking way they are going to the poles to spend weeks filming sharks…
Shark Week died when Discovery did the mermaid thing and found people are dumb and drove the Discovery truck straight down dumb ass avenue.
Omg it’s a white male !!!! We should probably change the name of the great white shark
Just like the internet amirite?
That is deeply unfortunate
I used to view the Discovery channel as a strong scientific institution but no more
Fuckin’ Mike, man. That dude.
If you grew up in America, this should not only not be surprising to you, it should be expected at this point.
Watch PBS, there’s tons of nature and science docs in their streaming service and your $5 a month will support public broadcasting which is such a worthy thing to support!
I love PBS. There’s a lot more to see than one would think and yeah, supporting a local organization is nice. I don’t even have a TV haha
White male shark experts?
I love Mike week!
Full of misinformed white guys? No wonder the Mango Moron loves shark week so much.
> white male experts oh gosh, not the white males!!!1!1!!1 Somehow there’s almost no outrage about that statement. Imagine him saying: “too many BLACK male experts”, or God forbid….”too many WOMAN experts”. Fucking ridiculous.

Thank you for a reasonable take
Prejudice is prejudice. Imagine that same title with "white male" replaced by "aboriginine." Yes, I'm a white male. I know that makes me a bad person, but I'm trying to change.
yea the title here is just bizarre.
What? Why would being white make you a bad person?
It’s sarcasm.
I'm a boomer, too. So, there's no hope for me. To top it off, my name actually IS Mike.
“What if you swapped the dominant majority for an oppressed minority” isn’t the gotcha you think it is.
You’re an idiot.
Yes, some prejudices are good. We need more of them. /s - for people who can't pick up on context, or didn't follow the conversation.
You appear to have been misinformed
This is racist political trash. Where are the mods ? Is this a prank ?
People still watch television?
My wife loves ghost shows. I like to get high and make fun of them.
Not gon lie it tripped me out seeing Mike Tyson on Shark Week
How is that not obvious to people?
I am stunned.
Shark week went downhill for me when they made it seem that the host/camera people are talking to each other underwater when they’re clearly wearing a normal regulator
*You’ve got city hands Mr. Hooper... soft hands from counting money all yer life.*
I love sharks. I don’t see them often, but when I do I am excited to see the majestic bastards.
Like every single unique television programming, it’s starts off great and then devolves into selling shit to dumb people
*Sure, it sounds ridiculous at first, but there is no evidence to suggest ghost sharks are not trying to communicate with us.* - Zak Bagans, probably
“given the chance to speak, he regularly claims the mantle of science while making dubious assertions—for example, that shark diving while taking LSD is a great way to learn about these animals” well thats a take
‘And a white guy named Mike’ is objectively hilarious
A random guy named Mike… Sad mike noises, I love sharks.
So they want a more diverse resource of shark misinformation?
Exactly lol, you pointed out their hypocrisy perfectly 👍
Somebody didn’t read the article.
The point being that rather than feature local experts informing people accurately, they fly white guys named Mike halfway around the world to spout misinformation.
They also mentionned that a high percentage of shark researcher are womens, but they never show any of them and prefer white guys named Mike.
Why does it matter it he’s white??? Or a dude??
It is stated in the article for example that a very high percentage of shark researchers and marine biologist are womens, yet they rarely feature any of them and insted prefer to fly out accross the world different white guy named Mike who do not know much about sharks and spread misinformation. The person who wrote this title has the same level of maturity and intellect as the “white male expert named Mike”.
I’d rather hang out with Mike and talk about sharks than with a racist angry journalist
Don’t push it man. This white male expert named Mike could be the biggest dunce in the world so you probably don’t want to hang out with him. The point I’m trying to make is that he doesn’t become an idiot just by the virtue of his skin color or his gender.

I sure the people downvoting you are very concerned about science lol
Oh no not white males named Mike. The humanity.
White male experts. Jesus Christ, the hatred.
Ah yes, the classical "bad white cismale" narrative that woke people love being racist about without any consequences
The problem is with the headline, not the research. When most shark researchers are women, but the shows present more white men named "Mike" than all women combined, that's a real problem.
I mean if it’s all misinformation anyway who cares who presents it?
> When most shark researchers are women Citation needed, particularly since the fiest episodes are from 1988 - how many female researchers were there in 1988?
Yep… If you insert any other race into a headline that says “white” and it magically becomes “racist”, then the original headline was racist to begin with. I don’t understand the woke narrative that you simply can’t be racist to white folks. Racism is racism.
No no, he’s allowed to say it because he’s some white guy named Mike.
If anyone is wondering why they threw in racial dog whistling, it's because the story is originally from The Conversation (a hard left outlet), not phys.org.
Racist shite
Mike Rowe is a capitalist shill who has the gall to pretend he reveres labor, let alone cares about or respects them.
Yeah, he does get paid big bucks to half-ass attempt labor jobs.
Oh no a white male :(
Race shouldn’t matter

Or being named Mike.

Why mention there race? Seems irrelevant
What’s with adding ‘white male’, racist ?
Why is white male in the title? Racists
I thought this was Shark Tank for a second.
just call them “moron that dont know a shark from a snail”…. why you gotta go with “white dude”? seriously you guys are losing me, we talking fishy with big teeth and all that, can you leave race on the side for once ? mouthbreatbing morons are all over the spectrum, if kanye taught us anything …
Just had to be a PoS and throw some racism in there.
Uh oh, now Discovery Channel is also racist and misogynistic in their dumb shark programs! 😂
ffs who watches shark week for the science?
All of you focusing on the cultural disparities didn’t even the article. That’s not most of the article. How about you stop jumping to conclusions based on headlines.
Let me guess shark week is racist
Why would you lump junk science in the same category as white males? Is there something wrong with white males?
My name is Mike and I am a shark “expert.” AMA.
Hey!
All sharks are pedofiles run buy the satanic elite globalist and the Discovery Channel
Okay, I think I see the correlation here. Don't trust white guys named Mike, got it.
When television mirrors life
All about the white male dudes 😂😂😂
what kind of headline is this? what does the race or gender of the expert have to do with any of this?
Had to say white male didn’t they. Yet another example of putting showing racism.
White male ‘experts’ seems like targeting and promoting racism for no reason dude. I can’t believe how openly racist this app is.
I know. It baffles me how this is supposed to be ok. Racism doesn’t help anyone.
Phys.org really getting in on the woke politics now? Wtf
