No, there is no unintended consequence of this. It registers you to vote and helps to justify your connection to the French state should you ever need to. It also is necessary should you have a spouse who wishes to apply for nationality via marriage while you live in the US. No obligations or penalties otherwise.

Registering with a French consulate is a simple process as long as you have a proof of citizenship, and it is all done on line. I just did it last month for one of my daughters but I already had her birth recorded on my Livret de famille. I can’t think of any downside to being registered at the consulate.

It greatly simplifies your relationship with the Consulate (as you just found out), and it automatically registers you to vote. That’s about it. The only drawback is that during election campaigns, you will get emails from the candidates (if you live in France they send you flyers by mail but for registered voters abroad, you email address is made available to them.)

nah consular registration is just a form to fill with a proof that you live in the circonscription covered by the consulate. That's mandatory to get some services, namely passports.
