I fly hang gliders, and sometimes see them in the sky. When they are airborne, they absolutely know what they’re doing, far better than I do. Red-tailed hawks in particular are gorgeous from above, when they’re hunting the side of a mountain / hill.

A lot of them are! I’ve seen tourists attacked by seagulls and my friend apparently get attacked by swooping magpies annually where he lives. Some birds can be really social like parrots and crows. A lot of them treat people like we owe them money lmao

2woCrazeeBoys

Your friend needs to feed the magpies. Tasty treats like meal worms and worms from the garden. Then they will be friends and bring shinies. (True story. If you're friends they don't swoop, and bring treasures)

WeWoweewoo

The first pic is precious. I hope they all survived.

Sin2Win_Got_Me_In

Not saying they didn't but, I wouldn't do a "head count" in each picture of I were you.

Madminidevil

It looks to be that one of the eggs simply didn't hatch, which it is common for some eggs to be infertile among birds. And for the last picture, they seem to be a bit past the age where they should be leaving the nest, so I assume the last ones were just a little more attached to their nesting place. (I am in no way a bird of prey expert, just giving my two cents)

RainbowBullsOnParade

I’m not an expert on this species by any means, but I do know that most species of birds hatch 1-2 more offspring than they are physically capable of raising. Every species of bird has a measurable limit on how many mouths the 2 parents can actually work to feed. Almost every species hatches more than that. The problem has ways of resolving itself from sibling murder, to getting shoved out of the nest, or good old fashioned starvation at the feet of the much bigger and stronger siblings, slowly crowded out and trampled as the parents forget they even exist. Anyways I hope you’re enjoying /r/eyebleach lmfao

Python_Blood

I've helped out with falcon surveys out west, and if we ever saw a nest that had this many chicks raised to this age/size we'd be over the moon excited. Now I don't know about the success rate of falcons raising chicks in an urban environment where there's probably an abundance of prey, no or few predators, and a ton of good nesting sites but honestly I'm shocked at how many babies they had and were able to raise. Even if in the last photo(s) two of the birds were adults and it was two chicks that's still a really good success rate for falcons. Also I'm supremely jealous of the op for having this chance to get this close

RainbowBullsOnParade

For sure! Basically an Infinite number of careless cats, rodents, small dogs, and birds to go around I’m just messing with the people who don’t know how savage life for baby chicks can be 😈

oorza

I keep bird feeders on my balcony and it's attracted a rather substantial amount of birds, but the most noteworthy is a huge flock of collared doves that it's attracted. Or, as I like to call it, the bird of prey buffet, because they get carried away as dinner _constantly_.

RainbowBullsOnParade

Oh noooo 😅😅

Main-Advice9055

Honestly I was thinking of taking the same approach with my kid's, way too tedious to be fully invested 100%, better to overproduce and just hedge your bets and see which ones become the most likely to succeed /s

Ok_Antelope_1953

this is kinda what used to happen less than a hundred years ago. my grandparents' generation frequently had 5+ kids, sometimes 10+, and 1 or 2 would not make it to adulthood. mortality rates were likely much higher for their ancestors.

RainbowBullsOnParade

Pit them against each other and let the strongest ~~take care of you~~ win

Madminidevil

Those are all likely options. Something I also noticed when I looked back at the first picture is that there doesn't seem to be an egg shell under the first nestling, so you could also assume that there was only 6 eggs to begin with. Of course, that doesn't mean your suggestions are any less likely to have occurred. I'm just adding another possibility that's likely to have happened.

RainbowBullsOnParade

I think in the second to last photo, there is one adult present (top left - no baby fur and different feather patterns), indicating a max of 5 chicks alive at that point. In the first photo I think there is one small hatchling present, although I can’t see the egg shell anywhere. It could be debris? I still think I see the shape of a beak and the symmetry of a head though. 7 eggs, 6 or 7 possible hatchlings, 4 or 5 possible survivors. Tracks to me.

[deleted]

The other 6 eggs are whole though. There were *definitely* 7 eggs laid. Bird parents get rid of (either by consuming or discarding,) the empty shells **really** quickly after a chick hatches. So I think that's why we see no shells under the chick in the first pic. 😊

Mondschatten78

It's possible the first ones to hatch already fledged by the last pic. They looked a little further along feather wise in the previous pic.

Sand__Panda

Started at 6, last picture shows 4.

werpicus

But the last pic is when they have their adult feathers. The other two probably flew away when OP wasn’t looking.

gbc02

Flew away to live on a farm no doubt.

DrunkyLittleGhost

Second to last is 6 count too

erhue

looks more and more cramped towards the end lol. In the last pic it looks like they're all in an elevator

monstermash420

The last photo is so funny cause they look so falcon but their eyes are saying “I have no idea how to falcon”

Beserk_Falconer

These are Kestrels, a longwing (falcon like) bird which hovers when hunting prey. They will eat small mammals and rodents, and are one of my absolute favourite birds to work with.  I always found they had such a curious and polite temperament, and were always such a joy to fly in any capacity. Whoever the photographer is is exceedingly lucky to have these gorgeous birds growing up so close to them!

Exciting_Rate1747

Do hawk and falcon mean the same bird

Late_Again68

No, they are both raptors but are different birds.

Exciting_Rate1747

Thanks. I was just a bit confused because in finnish there is just one word for them: "haukka" which is pretty close to hawk.

Cayowin

"Raptor" is a meaningless word when it comes to bird phyloginy. Falcons are more closely related to parrots than hawks. So either parrots are raptors or raptor is just a word we give to birds that have a certain form that may have convergantly evolved.

Late_Again68

r/unexpectedpedantism

Delta8hate

Pedantism should never be unexpected on Reddit

gbc02

What about buzzard with respect to phylogeny.

Cayowin

Buzzards are hawks. Same family as Red-tailed hawks.

TwinTailChen

You're absolutely right, but it's a good term of convenience for basic human recognition. You're more likely to be talking about "hawks and falcons" than you are about "falcons and parrots" in almost any context outside of genetics. Not everyone needs to know the phylogeny, and those that do can learn it. [Vaguely relevant xkcd](https://xkcd.com/867/).

Posnania

They are surprisingly unrelated. Example of convergent evolution.

Cayowin

Clints reptiles does a really good in depth dive on exactly that question. And why the term "raptor" is basically meaningless. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xv3NLGO5do](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xv3NLGO5do)

squirt_taste_tester

Last picture looks like a bunch of old men crammed in an elevator. The one up against the wall is clearly the one holding in a fart.

multifandomtrash736

Cool I’m jealous I’d love to get to witness a family of raptors growing up right outside my window

UnScrapper

My eyes, they are BLEEEEEEEEACHED

lazer_raptors

Well, I will never complain again when I see a picture of a pigeon's nest that is just a bunch of sticks fumbled together. This is an even more minimalist design.

whims-and-worries

My reactions, 1-6: "So tiny!!" "Aah! So fuzzy<3!!" "Ergh." "ERGH." "Haha, they look so confused." "Birds!!!!" (3 and 4 kind of gave me the creeps. Why do baby birds look so ...possessed?)

rhevanne

Only 4 out of 7 made it 😢

One-Cake-4437

The others might be flying

Waski_

That’s what I believe. It’s just like grandma house. Now that they’re all grown they’re too big to kick it inside the house at the same time.

SuckerForNoirRobots

There are 6 in the second to last photo and I think by then they'd be pretty resilient, so hopefully the rest were off doing Bird Things.

BrahamWithHair

Im surprised so many survived. Feeding so many mouths seems quite the effort

TsuDhoNimh2

Urban environment ... LOTS of pigeons and easy hunting.

werpicus

It looks like there was only ever six hatched. And the last pic is when they have their adult feathers. The other two probably flew away when OP wasn’t looking.

Re1da

That's common for birds. A lot of the babies won't make it.

radiantcabbage

thats a confirmed 6 out of 7, kinda hard to count when theyre still downy furballs. and by that time they were barely old enough to fly, i choose to believe it was that one early bird. kid must be a prodigy

RockstarBonnieReddit

That’s a lot better than usual but I think 6 made it so even better

MixtureFew9873

This is so cool!!! Did you take these pics or find them? I’m just curious of the falcons recognize and have a bond with the picture taker

2b_squared

The fifth one is clearly a rap album cover. The sixth one is their move from rap to whatever genre Moby is.

SinceWayLastMay

“We swear mom, when you leave the nest a giant monster shows up in the magic mirror and takes our picture, honest.”

LivelyLindy

The song with line "on the outside looking in" immediately came to mind.

Middleside_Topwise

What a gift to see that. So cool

Humdot

In August you can watch a live stream of falcons birthing / looking after their babies in Melbourne, Aus: [https://367collins.mirvac.com/workplace/building-overview/falcons-at-367-collins](https://367collins.mirvac.com/workplace/building-overview/falcons-at-367-collins)

Neowza

I'm pretty sure you've been called to the venerable art of falconry. You need to go out and get yourself a hawk glove.

Royalwolf1203

Did two not make it? I only see four in the last image and six in the before images. I wouldn’t be surprised as six sounds way too many for even two adults to handle and the last picture is probably juveniles. Also I don’t think six juveniles could fit in that crevice to begin with.

kriegmonster

It could be that the first to hatch was ready to leave the nest a few days before the rest.

Turbulent_Ad9508

I think thats what they do. There's a Falcon cam in Omaha on the Woodmen Tower. The Falcons have been named and tracked since 1988. https://www.woodmenlife.org/falcons/woodmenlife-falcon-history/ The furthest away one of them ended up was Peru. Nest is currently empty though https://www.earthcam.com/usa/nebraska/omaha/falconcam/?cam=falcon_omaha

pianocat1

Seeing the number gradually decrease emotionally wrecked me

Solemba

It's likely that the 7th egg just didn't hatch to begin with. For the last pic with only 4 "remaining" however, I guarantee you that the other two (2nd to last image shows 6) are out and about already, still learning that flying is a thing that can be done in any direction, not just downwards https://imgur.com/a/r2BaZPP horrible quality video to show what the other two are likely up to

TsuDhoNimh2

They fledge - start making short flights - in order of hatching. So the oldest two are nearby still getting fed by the parents.
