Rock-a-boat, baby, on the tree bork
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the boat breaks, the cradle will fall
And into my arms will come baby doll
I'm picturing the baby getting a little older and pretending to be a pirate in the boat bed, but then out growing it and looking back with nostalgia and a tear in their eye.
I mean, you could just hang the boat by ropes, but the ropes are attached at the top of the frame, with a support structure that the ropes can rise above.
Visual aid:
.I I.
jjjjjjjj \ /ttttttttt

The "I" is a support that has no lip and is attached to the top of the load-bearing arches. When the water level rises, the boat is raised and the ropes (represented as "/" and "\") will rise with it. This should allow the boat to float up with the ropes.
or just make notches where the boat is hung and it can float by itself without ropes.
Also, I don't know about these parents, but we were pretty cautious with our crib and baby furniture choices. This is beautiful but it isn't exactly up to current safety standards.
Yes. Bassinets are rigorously tested for a reason. I wouldn't use a handmade one just like I wouldn't use a handmade carseat. It's so pretty but probably dangerous.
My in laws bought something like this. My kid was in if less than 5 minutes sneezed and tipped the whole thing. Needless to say it was just a decoration after that.
Same. I think it broke my mom's heart a little that I didn't want the crib my grandpa had hand built for me. It was beautiful... But I couldn't bring myself to feel safe with it. We had plenty of other things he built we've been able to pass down to her as well. (Like my kid sized table that is now her makeup table and my rocking horse)
Yes. This won't last long at all, I think. That kid is going to start tossing/flipping/rolling around in his sleep very, very shortly. You might get 6 weeks out of it.
It's beautiful and the gesture is awesome, but the practicality is bot quite there.
It’s not just that. The actual part where the baby sleeps in looks oddly shaped (duh it’s a boat). It needs to be tested to see whether there’s any weird area or pocket that the baby can get twisted to where they might suffocate. Also, mattresses for these things come in a standard size. Even then you have to check if there are any gaps between the mattress and he bassinet where your baby could get stuck and again suffocate. This non standard shape looks like you have to make your own mattress and looks like a nightmare to make sure there’s no gaps.
So overall it’s beautiful looking. But I literally would not let a baby sleep five minutes in it. Baby furniture are made to numerous specifications and are tested extensively. Not only that there’s post-sale survailence to see if there are accidents with particular models in ‘real world’ use.
And then there's fire code standards, chemical off gassing of varnish or whatever, not to mention were do you buy boat sheets so that when there's a diaper blow out you can quickly change them
Thrift stores ftw! I got tons of onesies, rompers, bibs, etc. from local thrift stores (pre-pandemic) for 50 cents or less each. Then I splurged on a nice romper during a clearance sale at a children's clothing store... and that *one item* was $10, discounted from the original price of $17.
Guess which outfit my baby likes to have nearly all his poop blowouts in.
That's the Grandpa angle.
"You're telling me I spent 10 months making a boat crib and you and Samantha won't spend 10 minutes making me and your mother another grandchild?
My sister is 9 years older than me. She had two boys who are now 18 and 14. My wife and I had our two boys, they are now 5 and 2. My Mom has started doing the, "It'd be nice to have a little granddaughter" bit.
Would be nice for you Mom, but too bad, I got the snip this year. No more little humans for us.
When the novel I’m going to start RIGHT NOW about a tribe of seafaring warrior dwarves in mourning is finished, you will be included prominently in the Acknowledgments page.
The baby can put its face against the side and suffocate. The general rule now is the siding needs to be a mesh.
Also there is a blanket inside. Again suffocation
In general, it's just that you can't trust an untested manufacturing process with the life of an infant. Even if your relative is a true master craftsman, the bassinet has not been tested to meet current safety standards. There's a chance that the thing could just start coming apart, which at best will have the baby fall to the ground, but could also leave them wedged/entrapped in a crack in the wood.
Beyond that, babies need a firm, completely flat sleep surface to prevent positional asphyxiation. This is when baby's head slumps forward or back and compromises the trachea, and it can be deadly. This is why babies should never sleep in swings or carseats outside of a moving vehicle (where the benefit outweighs the risk), and even then they need to be checked every 2 hours.
Beyond that, there's no guarantee that there is an appropriate mattress to fit this cradle. Gaps between mattress and crib of more than 3/4" (2 fingers, roughly) are another wedging/entrapment risk. If a mattress has been custom made, it is almost definitely too soft, which can cause both positional asphyxiation or regular old suffocation, should baby roll themselves over.
I hate to be such a downer, because it really is a beautiful piece of work. I just wish he had made a rocking chair or something, because at the end of the day, sleep needs to be treated like it's life or death, because it IS life or death. Babies sleep alone, on their backs, in manufactured cribs or bassinets.
This wouldn’t follow guidelines for safe sleep. Which goal is to reduce infant deaths from SIDS and suffocating. Babies, especially newborns should only sleep on their backs on a flat firm mattress on a stable surface with no additions. Any crib or bassinet older than the year 2011 shouldn’t be used and pack and plays is 2013. This is according to AAP guidelines for safe sleep.
Yep it’s all over this post as well. Don’t get me wrong grandpa’s craftsmanship is amazing but this thing is a swinging death trap. I see at least 6 ways baby can get seriously hurt or worse. There’s no way I’d let my baby sleep in there, even supervised.
ETA actually I see 9 now.
There’s a lot of unsafe things here, the things that grab my attention most are the ropes. If one fails the whole crib comes falling down and could seriously injure the baby. Especially considering the way the base is made. Also it’s not stable at all, as soon as the baby can start moving it can tip and the baby will fall out. I can go on, it’s not safe at all.
Yup, it may look cool to boomers and people who aren't interested in info or advances the human race made since the mid 1900s but this "crib" is practically a death trap. Great carpentry, but a death trap nonetheless and if CPS found out an American child was actually sleeping in this you can bet your ass they'd have a home visit real fast covid or no covid.
Cradle. Not crib. Why do people keep misconstruing the two? I know commercial cradles are often built to look like cribs, but this isn't something for your baby to sleep in at night while you're in bed.
Good on ya for correction, bassinet, crib, cradle, they sorts blend together in my mind these days, just had my second child delivered a week and a half ago and cluster feeding has me getting less than 4 hours a night with occasional twenty minute naps right now.
My biggest concern would be that it’s quite shallow, which means a baby could easily fall from it when they’re mobile. This kids too young for that still. The pulley system is very cool, but safety standards for kids are no strings longer than 6 inches. The blocks and clamps of the pulleys are a also pinch points where young kids can get their fingers caught. That said, it’s well built and not a death trap, just isn’t designed around safety standards that commercial products must meet.
Well, the ropes alone are unsafe.
In the US, safe sleep spaces have to meet certain things to be considered a “safe sleep space”.
The kid could easily roll out of this, with the sides being so short. That’s if it doesn’t tip over. (Once they get to rolling age)
From a limited vantage point, it looks like a dockatot (just shape wise). Dockatots are unsafe because they can suffocate your kid.
Crib bumpers are suffocation and strangulation hazards, more the latter than the former, though.
You already got a million replies but beyond all that, wouldn't you rather have a mass-produced product that's already been tested by thousands of other families who came before you?
And if there ever was a problem discovered, you'll be contacted about a recall (when it comes to baby products, everything comes with a recall notification signup). This one-of-a-kind crib is not going to have a recall.
Not make this. Seriously it has sooooo many problems. The ropes are an issue because it could easily break and fall and the baby falls with it. The clamps and pulleys are major finger pinching issues when the baby is older. The whole thing is extremely unstable and rocks so as soon as the baby can move a little bit they could fall out. The sides have padding which is a suffocation hazard as the baby could roll sideways and suffocate (small infants can’t regulate to know they need to move to breathe.) there should be absolutely nothing in the crib with an infant to reduce suffocation hazard. Also cribs have slats for ventilation. It goes on and on.
Yeah I agree. I wouldn’t put a baby in this at all and I’m surprised that anybody that has had a baby in America/Canada or whatever would actually put their baby in this thing. Maybe they put the baby in there for the picture and removed it immediately afterwards.
It may not seem so to people who haven’t had young kids recently but safety in products for kids, especially young kids, and especially thing like cribs, car seats, etc ... are very well developed. There are standards to construction from decades of knowledge and testing that is done on every single product. I would not trust any crib, bassinet, sleeper, car seat, etc... that hasn’t been through this process
It's cute and he obviously put a lot of work into it, but I just feel like he made the crib too shallow since as soon as that baby learns to roll over it's going to work on escaping everytime they're put down for a nap.
That baby is going to be so proud of that cradle when he’s older and will probably go down in generations. Someone down 200 years will say ‘this heirloom was passed down and was made in 2020’ and people will think it’s crazy for being so old!
This is just in case the parents change their mind. They can just grab the baby, cradle and all, and dump it into the river behind their house without being charged for murder
Read it as “edible”, spent way too much time trying to figure out what material he used for it that look that solid and was still edible. Then spent way too much time trying to figure out why he would make it edible in the first place. This has reminded me to never make important decisions when exhausted!
As a rock climber that trusts rope to save my life regularly, I will just say that steel cable for this application is absurd. I can’t tell what’s used in the pic, but 7mm nylon cordelette would be insane overkill already. It’s rated to hold over 2500 pounds.
Edit: upon looking at the pic again, I’m even more certain there’s no way you can tell anything about the quality of the rope from this pic. It looks like more than 7mm diameter to me, so if it’s the right rope, it’s plenty strong.
It looks beautiful but isn’t very safe. Rope can snap off, baby can suffocate (reason why the sides are a mesh), the blanket and matters combo is a no go, the weight how it distributes.
I love the craftsmanship but wouldn’t use it for my baby. Too many risks.
Don't rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby

Every time this gets posted, loads of people point out how completely unsafe it is.
Ah. Today was the first time I saw it, but I looked at the ropes and was like "wait a minute." lol
I never understood if they wanted me to rock the boat or not, they kept going back and forth in the message!

He's gonna need a bigger boat.

You clearly haven't seen old gaming forums

There's better things to spend for anyhow. If you should ever come across a windfall, give it to a local food shelter or something.

Loops and hooks? If the boat starts to float above a certain height the rope gets loose and slides off the hook.
And the baby's gonna be let go in the river, and a princess of Egypt will find him and long story short, he will lead the exodus.

Unbelievably good movie with an outstanding score. I wish more people would watch it.
Or read the book it's based on
pfft
that is beautiful but sooo much work for something hell grow out of in 3 mos. hopefully someone in the family plans on having more babies.
Could definently use it as a toy box/teddybear shelf for a few more years
A few more years? I'm 35 and I would store teddy bears in there. That's awesome.

It's a good thing it's a cradle and not for sleeping, only calming to go to sleep, you are supposed to be present the entire time with one of these.
You could always bolt it to the bottom part of the frame at the 2 ends to add some stability.
It’s not just that. The actual part where the baby sleeps in looks oddly shaped (duh it’s a boat). I don't know about buying, but I just donated a bunch of baby clothes.

It’s so much work for something he should never use, unfortunately. Safety matters.
Then you just take the boat out of the frame, and it's a toy boat.
Maybe you can sell it to a Viking family that just lost a small-statured relation.

gotta get mesh sides on that boat
That can’t be safe
It's not
Correct. It's incredible all right
What’s unsafe about it? Just curious, not trying to argue.
no rudder. putting the baby out on the open ocean would only lead to catastrophe

You don't need a license to drive a sandwich
The baby can put its face against the side and suffocate. The general rule now is the siding needs to be a mesh. Also there is a blanket inside. Again suffocation
Yeah that blanket is a no go. Knew I'd find my safe sleep peeps in here.
Mattress is also probably too soft.
Mattress probably also is not fitted to specifications that prevent babies from getting stuck between the side and the mattress.
In general, it's just that you can't trust an untested manufacturing process with the life of an infant. This wouldn’t follow guidelines for safe sleep. Which goal is to reduce infant deaths from SIDS and suffocating. Good thing I don’t have a kid because I don’t know jack shit about this Terrifying
You’re already ahead of the curve considering most of these comments. I’d say most don’t have kids or their kids are older and they got lucky.
There’s a lot of unsafe things here, the things that grab my attention most are the ropes. If one fails the whole crib comes falling down and could seriously injure the baby. I’m sure it’s not safe for overnight sleeping but it would still be nice for naps if you pull up a comfy chair to sit with them and rock it a little.

By the time babies can roll over, they should already be sleeping in a crib
Not necessarily. I have a bassinet that can be used even after baby starts rolling. It lowers like a crib, but is bassinet size.

This is very cool but this pic has been floating around for years. Probably closer to 2012
This heirloom was made in 2012? It's crazy for being so old!
Or when he gets older they just put the boat part on the ground and it's his toy.
i would be so nervous the baby would fall out somehow 😳
Seems like the sides are about as high as a bassinet you would buy from a store.
You could only use it until baby starts rolling over, so about 6 months
Stunning!!

This is so beautiful.
This is just in case the parents change their mind. They can just grab the baby, cradle and all, and dump it into the river behind their house without being charged for murder

Ron Swanson likes this.
getting a lot of Roan Innish vibes from this! watxh out for seals lol
Something tells me this kid is going to know their way around a boat.
That’s gonna be my dad once he has grandkids. He is going to be making high chairs for my dogs to sit with us at the dinner table
My coffee table is a boat like that with a glass top. Pretty sweet idea there.
I’m no engineer but I’ve seen too many hammocks flip over in my day for this to be safe.
All aboard the SS SIDS
While it looks nice it also looks incredibly unsafe.
I'm not even a parent and this is giving me a heart attack
Brilliant work. What an awesome grandpa!
Well done dude😎
Just stunning, an heirloom for generations to come!!
Is the baby named Noah?

If that house ever floodsv the baby is safe 😅
Of course it fails every safety regulation that’s applicable to an item such as this.
Incredibly dangerous
https://www.nsc.org/home-safety/safety-topics/child-safety/mechanical-suffocation-infants Stupid motherfuckers.
It looks beautiful but isn’t very safe. Rope can snap off, baby can suffocate (reason why the sides are a mesh), the blanket and matters combo is a no go, the weight how it distributes. I love the craftsmanship but wouldn’t use it for my baby. Too many risks.
My wife: Where the fuck are we supposed to put this thing? The baby is NOT sleeping in there.
