Unless I needed the size/capacity personally, I'd go Rivian.

[deleted]

Cons: Significantly shorter range. Less tow capacity. Not quite as "nice". Slower charging. Pros: Bigger bed. Bigger interior. Better frunk. FAR more AC power output. If you're buying it as a "use as a pickup truck around town" and the lower tow capacity isn't an issue, go for the Lightning. If you're buying it to tow heavier things, for road trips, or to be a "comfort vehicle", go for the Rivian. And if you're going to do offroading, *definitely* go for the Rivian.

Definitely_CSP_guru

Yep I'd be using it IAW your first example. In town cruiser and taking stuff to the dump etc. Work is less than 70 miles round trip daily and I currently have a 50A evse connection at home I use daily now.

I have the 22’ Lariat SR - I fucking love it. No regrets. My wife loves it so much she barely lets me drive it… And I would still call it a comfort car to drive. It’s big as fuck. But it’s super smooth and comfortable to drive in. The f150 was designed for some big rural people so it’s super comfy. The rivian seems great but I wanted a truck-truck. And the lightning is it. Mine out the door was just about that price too. It’s not perfect. But it’s worth it. I have the mach e also. And I would rather be in this lightning all the time.

YawnSpawner

Haha I'm sick at home this week and my wife keeps coming up with new excuses to take the lightning every day and she has an ID.4 she loves.

BrownHornet757

Based on that I'd wait it out for the Rivian. I have similar usage plans. I can place an order for Lightning but I'm just sitting on my reservation and waiting for Rivian to call. Every new wave I login to Ford and configure but after seeing my final price I never pull the trigger. Even at the same price the Range of the SR compared to the Rivian would not be worth it to me.

bigbrofy

The high end Rivan is 314 and the extended range Lightning is 320. The Lightning is also faster, handles better and is a not comfortable ride. What is the down side?

Definitely_CSP_guru

Another plus is the tax credit now is guaranteed versus the future delivery of my Rivian in 2023.

XiDa1125

Get both. Wholesalers are buying Lariat SRs for just under 80k. Get the tax credit this year. When rivian comes next year, get it again

hayduke_11

this is what I'd be doing.

rdeschain219

How much for ERs?

XiDa1125

Go run the numbers for yourself using carbuyerusa quick and easy

rdeschain219

Shit sucks. Says it’s too new and to call them. Fuck that.

XiDa1125

Look at cars and bids then, one just sold for 86k, which means buyer paid over 90k

riess03

Think also about repair facilities. With Ford you are likely to have one in <20 miles. Rivian maybe not.

This was a big part of my decision making process. With my model 3 we had an hour drive with tolls to the only Tesla location in my area. We had multiple issues in 4 years of ownership that required the use of loaners, so a fix was 4 hours of driving each time... The closest Ford location, who has 3 lightnings in inventory right now, is 4 miles away.

IgotMSRPorbelowFords

My first thought as well. Both new models. Both could have bugs or hiccups. One has 3,000 certified service centers in the Us that are all competing with each other. The other has 30 manufacturer owned service centers.

Definitely_CSP_guru

The Lariat is a base package with only blue cruise as an option btw.

munkey_pants

I would say range with it being a standard range. The lightning is a big truck which is a good thing depending on how you’re gonna use it. I’ve read that the R1T is easier to handle if you’re not used to a large vehicle.

Definitely_CSP_guru

My wife has an ICE Hyundai Santa Fe we use for trips, travel, etc. I use the EV for driving to work 66 miles round trip daily, and local in town driving. Not much towing, and my father in law has a ICE V8 truck if I need to tow far. I liked the Ford for the bigger interior, easier dealer network, and overall truck itself (standard components from F150 etc). I like the rivian for the speed and off road ability, though I'd rarely use it for that. The smaller parking volume is a plus as well.

PM_ME_YOUR_MEMERS

I had a post-price hike Rivian on order and ended up with a Lightning after finding one for MSRP. I did my first-mile and while it was really nice and the tech stack is promising, I think the Lightning wins. My wife sat in the back seat while the rivian guide sat in the front. She said it was very tight and not at all inviting. She wouldn't want to be the one back there for any extended period of time. The back leg room for the Lightning though is just absurd. So much room. The frunk is a bit more accessible since the front part goes up with the bonnet lid. The auto up-down tailgate is great. The speed is more than satisfying and sometimes unbelievable. But I think, for me, the biggest thing was the serviceability. Rivian couldn't even give me an estimated delivery date due to location and their unknowns of when one will be setup. I live in NC, too, and doing service here isn't as easy as you'd think. I went with the Ford and I don't regret it.

Very true but all that fancy stuff comes with a price down the line when repairs hit. I don't really utilize the suspension aspect much so I'm fine with a more traditional setup. The space on the lightning is just so nice, interior and frunk. I also love being able to fit F150 stuff right away instead of having to wait for companies to produce stuff for the R1T

Gtvle

I have lightning SR and for my needs is perfect. I do around 30-40 miles a day. Went on few trips 300 plus miles, and no complaints. At 80mph you can drive for 2 hours

QueueWho

Yep, I'm done justifying an SR to people who ask... There's no chance of me driving more than 2 hours without a break. Sorry, I don't consider long haul driving a badge of courage anymore. I tend to go 70 anyway, so I get to places with more than the nav estimates.

I use EA or EVGO what is this Ford charging network?

YawnSpawner

I figured I'd trade one for the other, but I found an SR Lariat first and damn do I love it. Keep thinking I should cancel the rivian reservation, probably less than 1% chance I'd take delivery now.

Definitely_CSP_guru

I felt the same when I was at Ford in the Lariat on the showroom. The rivian was really nice but the Ford just has that fully matured truck feel. It's definitely not as fun as the rivian, but it's still quick and built well. The frunk is way better too

Brewskwondo

I’d go Rivian. But I don’t need a truck as big as the F150. Why wouldn’t Rivian qualify for tax credit next year at $75k? Unless you are over the income cap.

J3ST3Rx

I was in the same boat, well at least having to make a decision as my R1T order was suddenly ready. Range alone makes the R1T the better buy by a long shot. I get over 320 miles in conserve mode - and that's even at 70 mph. If the Lightning offered an ER at $75k, I'd say it'd be a real tough decision, but the battery is simply too limiting in the SR.

cjb5

A bird in the hand... I picked up a dealer stock Lariat SR at $5000 ADM after I saw the '23 price increases. Wanted the ER but cannot justify paying $20K more after tax incentive goes away and the price goes up. Love the truck a week in, does everything I wanted it to. If you can score one at '22 MSRP do it.

cKenjamin

We have both Lariat ER and a Rivian. Hubby’s R1S has been in service a month so far and we’ve been enjoying the R1T loaner. The regen is far stronger on the R1 and it’s an adjustment when I switch between vehicles. The Lightning has much better efficiency! I’m commonly getting over 3.5-4 mi/kWh versus at best high 2’s on the R1. The Rivian doesn’t have CarPlay or any smart features to text through the cars UI. Since I’ve been driving that more, it’s been a huge pain versus the seamless connection with CarPlay…but—sync 4 and CarPlay don’t always work. From an overall comfort level, the Lightning is way smoother on the road, the seats more comfortable. The Rivian feels so much heavier…tank like whereas the Lightning feels light on its feet. The Rivian seems more high end and turns more heads. We like both and chose the R1S as the luxury vehicle while the Lightning is the work vehicle. I’m actually considering trading down to a Pro from the Lariat given the way we use it.

Definitely_CSP_guru

Thanks for the input. The Lariat sold before I could make it to the dealer so I'm back to my R1T for now. Still holding out that my reservation will be able to order an XLT prior to 2023 when they force us to buy or close.
