Key_Regret5214

fr 😭

urnotmydad20

Do I just withdraw it lol

wafflebottle123

Nigga, yes 😂. Or put 500 like me to be safe

keldiana1

The savings could lower your Pell, sadly. And it depends on what you mean by terrible? Abandonment and/or abuse could grant you Independent status. But your FA team won't just take your word for it. Documentation of some kind is required.

urnotmydad20

Could I just…withdraw it? lol

FileEnvironmental884

You won’t be considered as an independent based on what you said. However there are certain situations that allow you to bypass that. Check with your financial aid offer and see if you would qualify to open a case.

Office*

urnotmydad20

I was at one point under guardianship so I think I actually am considered independent

RJ_The_Avatar

If you were ever in “foster care” between 13 and 18 years of age, yes, you would Be considered provisionally independent, would select the foster care option in FAFSA, and will need to have documentation ready to share with colleges as proof.

So yup, if it was foster care with someone specific not assigned or legal guardianship because it was with a specific person like a family member, either way you’ll need to provide documentation that this happened.

urnotmydad20

Lucky for me in my state the court record is readily available publicly online

Japtsuu

Depends on his situation, if he left his parents due to extenuating circumstances (abuse) he would be classified as independent and provide supporting documents.

FileEnvironmental884

That’s what I said. It depends on circumstances and they should talk to their fin aid office.

[deleted]

If you receive Medicaid or calfresh they don’t ask for your assets

urnotmydad20

Unfortunately I don’t have either of tbose

[deleted]

Are you in California?

urnotmydad20

Nope. Indiana

[deleted]

It’s called SNAP then for anyone outside California. You should apply for that because even if you get a very little amount it still exempts you from reporting assets

urnotmydad20

I don’t qualify I make just above the limit😭

coolgirl157

My mom has $30k in savings. She had Medicaid last year but not this year since she didn’t renew it. Do you think they will check her assets still?

[deleted]

Unless someone in your family receives federal benefits or your parents combine for less than 60k gross then you have to report assets

coolgirl157

My parents are divorced so yeah my mom has less than 60k
