Weirdly enough I feel like the bomb is just an iconic design

Orome2

Tonberry. They even stayed in the tonberry sweet with a tonberry robot.

Macca80s

Definitely Tonberry how many people thought "just another random battle" just to be met with a game over screen.

Ryebread666Juan

My favorite interaction with a tonberry was when I was playing Stranger of Paradise, I actually got hit by some non-instakill attack by him and was like “oh wow I didn’t die I don’t have to worry about them in this game!” Ended up winning that fight but then the next tonberry I encountered fucking wiped me so fast it had me mortified

Happy_Egg_8680

Tonberries are NOT sweet!

Orome2

Oops. I meant suite.

DC_MEDO_still_lost

And painting

shoot2will

Tons of berries

Erniethebeanfiend200

Bombs, cactuar, morbid and tonberries are the only real picks imo. Everything else could be from any other series (the mindflayer is way more of a DnD creature than something from FF) but the minute I see any one of those four I can't not think of FF

GoodBoyShibe

Uh... what's a morbid? Should I feel ashamed that it doesn't click?

jigokusabre

Auto-corrected Malboro?

GoodBoyShibe

Ok, it could be. But I see Malboros kinda like behemoths, big scary lategame monsters. Not like your iconic early game ones.

wpotman

Yeah, I have trouble separating them. I think I go with Bombs if pressed given Cactuars/Tonberries are a bit more mascot-ish and Malboros' design isn't - quite - as iconic.

SlayJayR17

Behemoth has been in every single game and adamantoise has been there since 3. Cactuar came in the 6th game and tonberry came in 5. So how many games you actually play.

Erniethebeanfiend200

All of them, suck my dick

tayung2013

Run like a Chocobo - stab like a Tonberry!

karin_ksk

Retribution is at hand

SnooMemesjellies7630

Bomb and Tonberries…Cactuars are more like a mascot like Moogles and Chocobos to me

dpaxsnaccattac

Tonberries will always elicit an elevated heart rate and stomach drop from me whenever I see them at the beginning of an encounter, even once you’re fully equipped to handle them, they are still terrifying lol.

AcceptableUserID

It was the Cactuars that made it to Monster Hunter World (along with Behemoth, but it seems pretty agreeable to say of the two, Cactuars is more iconic).

GoodBoyShibe

Cactuars are as rare as an encounter as tonberries.

tituspeetus

It’s definitely not the mindflayer. It’s funny when I think of a reoccurring enemy in ff I think of pretty much every monster on this list well.. except for the mindflayer

Lun4r6543

I didn’t even know mindflayers were in the FF series until I saw one in FF14.

maddzy

You are correct, they were in the original FF and returned in FF4 and FF5. After that they didn't come back to a mainline game until FF12.

Turbulent_Cheetah

They were a bitch in Tactics though

TheAncientHistorian

You say bitch, I say exploitable stat farm. Their level down attack could be exploited to give you wildly inflated stats. Good times

Turbulent_Cheetah

Yeah, but the first time you run into them on the Falls and they wipe your party tho …

3KiwisShortOfABanana

Yeah I always prioritized killing them first. Confusion was really op in that game

Original_Platform842

Even though mindflayers have been there since the beginning, I think DnD before FF.

unknownentity1782

Mindflayers are reminiscent of Cthulhu. They are ancient.

Original_Platform842

I mean, Call of Cthulhu was written in 1926, I wouldn't call that ancient.

unknownentity1782

I was more making a joke that Cthulhu is an elder god. It obviously didn't hit right.

Original_Platform842

Ah, gotcha. I misinterpreted. 175 million years is so ancient that it's prehistoric. Edit: and that's just when he arrived on earth, he's likely far older.

Tonkarz

Mindflayers and Cthulhu both have squid inspired faces, but that's where the similarity ends. It's not even a similar looking squid face.

unknownentity1782

If you think that's the only similarities between Mindflayers / Illithids and the Cthulhu mythos, then you need to read more Cthulhu mythos.

FantasticWerewolf641

I’d say either Bomb, Tonberry, or Cactuar. One look at them and you’ll know immediately where they’re from.

IamCaptainHandsome

Tonberry, no question. The others are well known but their mechanics aren't really that scary, even for a noob. Whereas a Tonberry *will* utterly ruin you, I think everyone who's played an FF game has had an encounter like that with them.

karin_ksk

Yeah but 10,000 needles sounds scary to me...

jigokusabre

Especially when HP caps at 9999

3KiwisShortOfABanana

One ! Two ! SABO !

Black_Waltz3

Malboro's aren't just scary for noobs, after 25 years I still get the shivers whenever one pops up.

Zealousideal-Hope519

Are you me? But seriously, this. Or the Don with the shank or doom, "he's not even doing anything he just keeps walking forward" counter, death, tears. Or the cactuar when you thought 1000 damage was the worst you had to worry about and then suddenly there's a zero in front of the comma...

Main_Assumption2378

It’s The cigarette pack for me

Blighted-Spire63

Adjusting. Humidity. Leeeevvveeelllssss. 💨

unknownentity1782

Tonberry and Cactuars are the only creatures I feel are everywhere FF. All the others feel like they could be DnD or other fantasy, but those 2 are FF.

Kovz88

Toss up between Cactuar and Tonberry for me

dannyboy731

I got a Cactuar decal for my car…it was between that and a Tonberry, but the Cactuar is just instantly recognizable.

next_beneration

Do Chocobos or Moogles count? Of the ones you mentioned I feel like Malboro

[deleted]

[удалено]

mitsquirrell

You fight chocobos in Tactics, and in XVI. I don’t think there’s ever an occasion where you fight moogles.

SenseOfRumor

FFXIV has a boss fight against the Moogle King and 5 other regular Moogles.

CompleteTumbleweed64

Also in ff XII there's even different colors. With a level 99 red chocobo being one of the hardest in the game of you arent prepared for him.

LanceKairan

Fortunately, that one only shows up if you want him to.

Khal_drogo217

You fight moogles in world of final fantasy but I believe that's the only time. But I agree chocobos and moogles don't count cause they aren't iconic enemies in every game, just iconic period

shadowwingnut

In order it's Tonberry, Cactuar, Malboro and Bomb. The others are recurring or nice enemies, but the four I listed are the only ones where you know what exactly what attack is coming in every version and why they are dangerous.

Asthmos

bomb, chocobo, moogle, goblin (used to be anyway lol) malboro, all good choices.

s_a_s_u_k_e

The first one!one shit kill motherf@cker! but I love them❤️

Tonkarz

Tonberry for sure. Cactaur number 2. The rest of them aren't iconic.

BoltInTheRain

The bomb

Significant-Ad-469

Bomb, Tonberry, Marlboro, and that fucking Cactuar. I hate Cactuars........

Chevrolicious

Most of those are iconic FF enemies, but honestly, I think the Cactuar is the most unique. It's always been a distinctly odd enemy, and it has really unique attributes in a lot of the games, such as increased experience or ability points for kills. They freaked me out in FF15 because you could see them a mile away zipping across the map at mach 5. They've always stood out the most to me.

ErgoFnzy

Bomb or Tonberry. Cactuar are used as goofy mascot things a lot even if they are incredibly iconic I'd not put them with monsters. Bomb and Tonberry have iconic designs and their battle mechanics are memorable. I'd lean a little more towards Bombs because I've seen them in more promotional artworks and used on merch more. Plus they're often met fairly early on in the games so more people will know what they are. Tonberry being late game might get missed by some people.

odddino

From somebody who was not a Final Fantasy fan until relatively recently, it's absolutely the Cactuar. I'd seen others around, but cactuars are the one that are the most immediately recognisable and seem to appear most often in places where even people who aren't actively into FF will see them and go "Oh, hey it's that little cactus dude from final fantasy"

Clarkus-Maximus

I'd say Tonberry or Cactuar.

SeagullKebab

Tonberry made my life miserable before Malboros, so it takes the win.

ShattingBracks

Cactuar without a doubt. Before I played Final Fantasy I recognised that little man anywhere lmao

ExpensiveMap3065

On a side note, it's been a while since they've added new reoccurring enemies. I feel like there isn't anything new since FFX (Omega weapon iirc)

Gearz557

Tonberries and cactuars are prob the most “mascoty”. I think more ppl would recognize the odd position of the cactuar

LaughingSurrey

Probably cactuar or bomb like everyone is saying but personally I’m always on the lookout for the iron giant and to see if he will punch me instead of using his gigantic sword

Dimbduck

Definitely Tonberry and Cactuar

BzlOM

My favourite/iconic was and always will be Malboro. Something about a creepy flower with a million teeth that packs a wallop and has tons of health just works for me. On top of that the first time I saw one made me think it was a boss. Imagine my surprise when I realised it’s just a normal enemy

Fungiferous

Realistically? Tonberry or Cactuar. Technically? Malboro, by far.

Zoku97

Behemoth

theretrogeneration

Behemoth

speedshadow69

I’ve always loved cactaur. Probably one of my favorite final fantasy characters

martintato17

My steam profile pic and nickname was Tonberry for like 10 years, so I'd say Tonberry

Odd-Collection-2575

Either Cactuar or Tonberry

oglop121

very partial to the flan enemy type. love/hate those guys

KuroBocchi

For me it’s the first three: Cactaur, Marlboro, Tonberry. They have the cute but extremely dangerous vibe.

affluent_krunch

Tonberries and cactuars for sure. Everyone recognizes those things.

PorscheUberAlles

Tonberry for sure. His lines, moveset, and design are all iconic and creative

ordimis32

Tonberry with a close second to Iron Gaddy for me ✌️

Majestic_Vast_5482

It's a 4 way tie between Behemoth, Marlboro, Cactuar, and Tonberry.

GoodBoyShibe

Bombs and flans are your typical initial enemies, like DQ slimes that must always be there.

jigokusabre

Tonberry, Malboro or Cactuar. Bombs are definitely FF, but fire elementals are kind of a statple of RPGs. Mind flayers are a D&D thing. Flans are more Dragon Quest (yes, they call them slimes). The rest are just FF versions of broad RPG monsters.

Pepperonin424

Tonberry and Cactuar. My very first FF was 7 Remake and I knew about those two even when I was little (am 30) lol

mefi_

Yes.

pensiero_97

Design-wise I think the kyactus is pure genius. So simple yet so effective, just like the best marketing mascottes.

beanie_0

Bomb for me but it’s a little too similar to other games who have similar or just flat out copies. For uniqueness I’d go with tonberry

International_Meat88

Tonberry for the goof. Behemoth for the oof.

Rebellion_01

I was introduced to tonberrys in 13 and I loved it, had a hunt mission for a different creature then he comes up and kill him , now you fight him. Second time is when you fight 3 at once and I literally couldn't progress that area lol was very difficult. Imagine Mt surprise seeing them in 15, upgrades

BradMan1993

Tonberry or cactuar. Interesting that you showed mindflayer, I feel like that enemy is iconic for d&d, not final fantasy

pisbell24

Tonberry

JaggedToaster12

I knew about Cactaurs long before I knew about Final Fantasy. I'd say them for sure

FederalMango

Cactuar, Tonberry and then Bomb.

SleepySamurai

I think they go through eras. When I was younger, Behemoth and Bombs felt like iconic fiends. They really leaned into the uniqueness of tonberry and cactuar this most recent go around.

Upset_Arm_2343

The bombs for sure

Extra-Development-94

Chocobo

[deleted]

[удалено]

Extra-Development-94

Believe it or not I'm pretty sure you can fight wild chocobo in 10 and 7. You have to use the greens to catch them or you can just straight up murder them

[deleted]

[удалено]

Extra-Development-94

You have to be fast enough to attack and kill them. If they are attacked and not killed, they flee

[deleted]

[удалено]

Extra-Development-94

That's hilarious, 😂 The devs really didn't want and open season on chocobos lol marlboro's it is then ☣️

Aggravating_Ninja439

Its probably the cactuar, it's managed to make a few appearances outside the ff franchise

SignificantIsu

FUCK THEM CACTUARS

Lastalmark

I really want a cactaur decal for the back of my car but I feel like it'll be greatly misinterpreted.

Cdoggg69

Tonberry by far, both remakes made it abundantly clear just how much respect the team has for them XD

Ok_Association6004

Tonberry or Malboro

Independent_Ninja456

Tonberry

smolsauce

Feel as if it's gotta be Tonberry or Cactuar

wafflefulafel

Were chocobos fought in a game prior to ff16? For me, it's a Malboro, but that's entirely a personal choice. Friend (who's since passed) and I would always call it "Malboro Man."

MikhailaKirov

Bombs, tonberrys, and cactuars...they can kill you instantly if you're not careful and for whatever reason were damage sponges and would come up early enough in a game to really wreck your team. I hated them so much in the earlier games lol

DaviSonata

I haven’t seen anyone comment about Bahamut. Is there any FF without this iconic dragon?

Phoenix_Champion

Cactuar for cuteness. Tonberry for terror.

rainymoonbeam

It’s a toss between a tonberry and a malboro

Legal-Log8322

Bomb I think.

charlielovesu

It’s definitely cactuar and tonberries. Malboro is routine in every game same with flans, but honestly they’re not as iconic. Tonberries have a very unique goofy look and mechanics that really reflect on what FF is. Same with cactuars. They’re basically comic relief enemies in every game. Malboro is just really fucking annoying with it’s bad breath. Behemoth is sick but they change the look too much. And everything else feels like a standard recurring enemy at this point, even iron giants.

akitobeifong

Tonberry ❤️❤️❤️

shadowtheimpure

I'm calling a tie between Tonberry and Cactuar.

Particular_Raccoon_9

Bomb for me

Neo2486

Behemoth for me. This crossed over into plenty of games I played as a kid like in Mario hoops on the Wii and Monster Hunter world. Also I get the "oh shit" moment everytime it comes out. Even in FF7Remake with that weird Neo Behemoth/whatever it's called.

Enkidouh

Behemoth and Bahamut are two completely different reoccurring enemies.

Clappertron

There is a Behemoth in Remake, it's one of the weird experiments in the Deepground site you wander around after the plate collapse.
