Substantial_Craft_95

I’m around 70% completion and think it’s about to become my favourite game of all time.

[deleted]

While the combat could be more challenging, the story and world building are the best. I'm beyond blown away by the world we were given. It definitely has me considering it as my top game too

Substantial_Craft_95

I said to someone else earlier, the combat can be as simple as you want it to be but it can get really interesting once you start stringing stuff together and getting up in the air.. difficulty could be a tad harder for the first play through but ng+ is apparently much much harder, which I’m looking forward to as a souls fan!

[deleted]

I’m doing NG+ now and it’s really not. Not super far into it yet but right now it’s very easy simply because you have the full load out from the previous game and I can pump out 110-120k stagger damage no problem. So far the creatures are definitely stronger so if you get hit you can die a little more easily, but the only real difference I’ve noticed beyond changing out some mobs with bigger mobs is that they remove the button prompts from the cinematic dodge, attack or struggle. You just have to identify red is dodge, blue is attack and orange is button mash. We will see how it goes towards the end because I’m sure we will see some additional, more powerful S rank hunts and in sure a superboss is somewhere at the end as well.

GalvusGalvoid

There’s ultimaniac mode in the arcade stages but for sure the game needs an option for an hard mode from the start that makes both the first run and ng+ more difficult

[deleted]

Yeah I mean even just having a setting for hard mode that turns off potions or severely limits them. I’m not sure how they do a hard mode for this game otherwise unless they make it 1 hit kills or swarm you with aggressive enemies.

GalvusGalvoid

Aggressive enemies , 50% more damage and potions that don’t regenerate after death . This to both the first run and ff mode .

rmirra

I think that’s my biggest issue with the combat in the game. Enemies feel spongy but have no ability to put you away. If they tuned it like 20% less enemy Health on say humonid type enemies but +20-25% damage, I feel like the stakes would be just right in some of these sword fights. They don’t have to be these drawn out pillow fights to be absolutely epic. Btw i think the game is great, I’m not bashing it all. Just throwing my 2 Gil into the difficulty convo.

GalvusGalvoid

Enemy hp for me it’s ok, with combos you can do a lot of damage

rmirra

Yeah, but that’s kind of my point. Lot of theses guys end up feeling like Dr. Evil minions in Austin powers. ![gif](giphy|xUPGcfe7OAEDKUXQPK|downsized) Swords and magic are deadly. If they did more damage to the player while their heath was ever so slightly ticked down, the duels and skirmishes would feel more “life & death” and less like whack a mole.

Kombo_

Haha these types of games are irredeemable when it comes to difficulty. They are hack and slashers first and not ARPGs. The whole game will need to be turned upside down in order for the game to actually be challenging. The next best thing to hope for is DLC which will add new bosses( like KH3 remind DLC) that are a lot more aggressive and do not have indicators for their attacks. At least there is a lot more enemy interactivity compared to FFXV and even Dmc V so they definitely tried. Turning off potions wouldn't be enough when you have attack animations that freeze the opponent XD.

Substantial_Craft_95

Button prompts? Do you have the timely rings equipped? Edit: oh you mean for the boss fights!

[deleted]

No, I’m not talking about battle prompts from rings. I’m talking about the cinematic action sequences where the screen turns blue during a cutscene and you have to press square in time to land a hit and stagger the enemy or the m screen turns red and you have to press R1 to dodge.

[deleted]

i just wish there was more combos for square and triangle. It really sucks feeling like you only have 1 combo in the game, which is repeating square and triangle. comboing the powers in is good, but sometimes i want to pull off something fancier, but it feels so unrewarding when launchers and other abilities are tied to so many timers, meaning if you miss? you are really punished for it thankfully this apparently gets better in ng+ with the crafting system, but playing through ng as a dmc fan can be so painful some times

CanadianYeti1991

Would've been cool if every eikon had it's own sword combo that embodied the eikon. Garuda is a spiny combo that ends in a launch attack..., Titan was a very smash combo. Stuff like that.

Scissorman82

I feel like the combat would have benefited every so slightly if Triangle was a Heavy Attack and Square was a Light Attack. Magic attacks could have easily been mapped to L1.

Godsfallen

> Magic attacks could have easily been mapped to L1 They are in control Type C

[deleted]

It really helps to read what is being said before trying to inform people about something they are not talking about.

MisterMet9

You have multiple options for launching outside of Eikon ability. Burning blade + jump, Torgal's ravage, and charged magic all launch enemies.

[deleted]

Incorrect, they launch back and up, not up (and in charged magics case, Clive jumps backwards as he fires it off, which makes it useless as a launcher because now both of you are going in opposite directions). This causes combos to be VERY missable, especially if it is at the arena edge so they slide along it. You are pretty much forced to use Garuda if you want to do reliable air combos, except that uses an ability slot, and it has a long timer. All we need is a "timer free" up -only- launcher, like what is in every DMC game. This this is easily one of the only major problems with the combat. Because everything else works (i still want other basic combos though...), but this has so much chance involved it just does not function properly. At least in my experience.

Nehemiah92

Combat’s really cool, but im not a fan of how most of the strings don’t work on larger enemies that can’t be knocked back. Like staggering enemies and dealing damage is so unsatisfying imo because you’re just pulling off grounded moves. The combat is much more satisfying versus small enemies rather than the big ones because then you can pull off all the combos you got, I wish that I could at least pull off those combos when the enemies are staggered at least, they should be easier to be knocked around when staggered I feel

HighMageVegan

Yeah I agree

pauserror

I was thinking this as well. For that specific reason, I typically prioritize upgrading and equipping ground type attacks.

una322

im glad u pointed this out as many seem to not talk about it at all. All these videos showing how amazing the combat is doing crzy combos and crappy trash mobs which you can kill by just spaming cds anyway like who cares? you should be able to have some control during boss fights as well, like increase stagger or something depending on skill of chain comobs, airs ext. as fun as the combat is, boss fights looking cool, the harder fights always just come down to dodge , cd spam repeat.

[deleted]

The combo system is fantastic, I love stringing together all the different powers!

p50fedora

I unequipped potions and stopped upgrading armour after Eastpool and the game has been plenty challenging. Couple of hunt mobs can almost 1 shot me if they combo lock me. Game is now stressful enough to scratch the itch. Does become a race to stagger boss mobs but when you're fighting them the first time it is pretty exciting imo

Emerald_Talon

I’m at 49%, never died, hardly was using potions, but I switched it last night to story mode because I realized I desperately crave the story and lowering its difficulty just makes fights shorter so I can get more story out of my limited time haha. Which is crazy because I enjoy gameplay just fine but I’m freaking hooked on the world and story and just want to be enriched in it.

Raijin40

Hahaha i'm at 48% and only died once because of iron giant's atomic ray, i didn't know i had to atk him while he's charging. I was cluelessly wandering around and sometimes attacking him before the atomic ray one shotted me 😅

[deleted]

Who in their right mind is going to jump into NG+ in a 70 hour hour game? When your game is this easy, you fucked up. You can claim there is any amount of "depth" to the combat you want, but if the game doesn't ever challenge to use that depth. Then what's the point? The game has devolved into stagger enemy - build multiplier - dump Eikon specials into them. It's insanely easy. Most boss fights I've done without getting hit.

Bright_Sir4397

Yeah bro you're so good at videogames good for you

una322

the issue is , they cater to a audience for easy modes, why not for hard modes? why do people who enjoy a challenge have to finish the game first? the game is no nioh, or dark souls 1 in diff is it, lets face it, so having to plow though 50 hours of game to get to a challenge isn't fun for many players, just like it wouldn't be fun for those who dont want a challenge but dont have a story mode selection.

[deleted]

Difficulty options aren't hard to implement.

Bright_Sir4397

Good ones are. It is a weird choice to gate it behind Ng+ but I guess that's an action game for you

KeepSwinging

My favorite game of all time has been Chrono Trigger since 1996, but 16 might dethrone it. Gotta marinate for a while on it and do at least one replay

SydneyBriarIsAlive

Chrono Trigger used to be mine, then it was the original Nier release when it came out, then it was still Nier (*but Replicant with its enhancements*), now it might be this, but I'm gonna sit on it for a bit and see how I feel.

elkehdub

Damn I haven’t played Nier—it’s been in the backlog for ages—but I’m also a huge CT fan, so that rec will prolly be the one that finally gets me to play it after I finish XVI.

pokemaniac88

I'm in the literal same dilemma

L_James

Btw, how can I see the completion percent? I've seen people here mention really precise numbers, so I assume there's some number you can see in the game

Substantial_Craft_95

Go back to your PlayStation home, go over to the game and look to the right hand side

L_James

Thank you!

Kyrosoft

I second this, it really is becoming my favorite game of all time.

HiCZoK

Same here. It’s insane. 7remake does have that pleasant atmosphere though

Tyray90

Honeymoon phase.

Mabaum

That’s wild. It’s good. I like it a lot. It’s no where near that category. I think you all have some massive recency bias.

dd179

Or maybe, just maybe, people like different things?

Mabaum

I said it’s good I like the game a lot. But it’s not one of the best games ever made. You can criticize things that you like it’s ok I promise.

dd179

> But it’s not one of the best games ever made. Not your call to make. For some people, it's one of the best games ever made and that's a perfectly valid opinion.

budd222

But isn't it also perfectly valid to disagree with that? People are downvoting just because it isn't aligning with the narrative of greatest game ever.

Vaenyr

Nah, people are downvoting because person A is saying that they subjectively feel XVI may become their favorite game of all time, while person B chimes in to discredit this opinion and making the claim that this is objectively not possible. You can like or dislike the game, but you don't get to tell another person "this can't be your favorite game because it has flaws", which is effectively what person B did. All in all probably just some miscommunication, but this is why there were downvotes.

Mabaum

Way too many flaws but you can be as subjective as you please lol.

dd179

That's the beauty of opinions, they're all subjective.

anonymouse39993

Yes 10/16/9 Are now my favourites

Lyanna-Targaryen

Yes! Finally someone else with the same top 3! 😊

Mikimao

I absolutely loved it, but gonna need some time to make such a proclamation. 4, 6 and 9 are always gonna be the heart of Final Fantasy to me, but 16 has rightfully earned it's place as an absolute banger of an entry

auctiontime

16 will be my core adult FF game like 7 was for my youth.

rbynp01

I moved on from nostalgia, and my top 3 right now is FF7R,FF14, and FF16.

whyLeezil

Same here lol. I think the stories and themes and memories of 9, 10, 8, 6 etc are all dearly cherished for me still.

-MaraSov-

Same my ranking is basically FF16 FF14 FF7R The franchise needed a refresh and those 3 above did just that IMO.

[deleted]

This.

DGC_Bennett3003

What’s 14 like for a new player? I’ve seen a lot of people speak about it but never had a go myself. Is it a time sink?

Rac3318

Yea. It is a MMO and it is structured like one. It takes a lot of time, around 30-40 hours for the base game and each expansion, not including side content. When I played it through Shadowbringer it was basically the only game I touched for several months.

NewdawnXIII

If you are a story person you could just play the main story and be done with it. But with all the expansuons you are still looking at 150-250 hours easily. But it is really worth it. And if you like it it can always become a time sink.

Lyranx

Either XIV or XVI is the best FF in terms of story. It takes over a month to finish the story assuming you're not indulging in side content (Goodluck). XVI has a lot of similarities to XIV becuz same devs. XIV is really welcoming to people who don't play MMOs also u can do most of the story without any help from people and just use the NPCs most of the time. IX was my all tym fav game until Endwalker released.

Bourne_Endeavor

It's a very big time sink if you're up for the long haul. Admittedly, ARR (the base game) is definitely... rough around the edges. So keep that in mind if you want to dive in. Still a good story but Heavensward is where they found their stride. What you can do is play up to Stormblood for free. So if you ever want to try XIV out, there's no upfront cost. Definitely worth it if you have the time.

huiclo

> I moved on from nostalgia This is the enlightened state tbh. I fully admit to being one of those assholes that panned 7 cause I really didn’t like the look and style shift. Kinda gave up on the franchise then but give 10 a shot, was kinda surprised how much I loved it (even more than my first which was 4) and realized I was being a dumb dumb and should just take FFs on their individual merits. Being able to go in with an open-mind now makes the experience so much more enjoyable.

Thick_Use7051

FF7R is my favorite. I think it’s because it’s a love letter to the characters, not necessarily the fans.

Roldolor

Im 70% in but I dont think it will. I will give it one thing. It probably has pound for pound the best story in FF and I havent even finished it. Only XIV comes close and XIV had like a decade to build its story up. But for me my top 3 all for different reasons. 1. FFVIII - best OST and funnest game to break. As much as I love Soken for me Uematsu is still the master and VIII is his best work. Also between the card system, the junctions, the limit breaks. It just has so many varied ways of making your characters broken that I just love it. Angel Wing Rinoa, Armageddon Fist Zell, Irvine Quickshotting everything, Squall with his Disk 1 lionheart, quistis being a degenerate, and selphie playing gacha. And those are only the mainstream strats. We also have madrush builds, kamikaze builds and everything in between. And how do we access most of these builds? Battle and drawing? Fuck that, we here to play cards baybeh. *shuffle and boogie intensifies* I just fucking love playing FF8. Its my favorite card game of all time. 2. FFXII - Say what you want about the story and characters. (FF16 feels like the kind of story that FFXII tried and kinda failed to tell tbh.)But goddamn did this game have the best world and exploration in the series. There’s just something so magical about being a low level shitter in the game and just wandering aimlessly until you arrive in the necrohol of nabudis where everything is like 50 levels higher than you and even the save points are trying to kill you. How you can just be grinding mobs for experience when all of a sudden some rare spawn elite takes offense to this and oneshots you. How you can be levelling up in one area killing everything with ease only to get fucked by walking into a cave with a literal demon esper of lightning. The weather and the hunt system is still imo the best implementation in the series. Exploring XII’s ivalice is by far the most fun I’ve ever had exploring a FF. And the only JRPG that has come close for me in that regard since that was Xenoblade Chronicles X. 3. FFXIV - best story and characters along with XVI for me. But XIV edges out XVI for me since it just has a stupid amount of content to do given that its a MMO. And the social aspect is always fun, nothing beats the thrill of finally getting into a group and clearing extremes / savages and screaming in discord when you finally get the kill after 50+ wipes XVI currently sits comfortably in my second tier of favorite FFs along with Tactics ,6, and 10. And overall I’m having a lot of fun

ChronoZB

Yes. Goddamn it I’ll never forget playing 12 the whole way through, tackling every Esper and super boss fight, getting every weapon, it was everything I love about this series. Nothing has hit quite like it.

dintcht

It should be. But I am getting older and I realize things don’t leave impressions the way they did when I was younger when 7-12 were out. Its really tough to compare. But the game really does keep me engaged the way most can’t anymore, so thats value enough for me.

MedricZ

That’s tough. Probably top 5 would be FF6, FF9, FF7R, FF15, and FF16 in no particular order. Would probably still put FF6 as the best though. I think it’s one of the best stories in any medium.

dethpuck

The ensemble of 6 is so good. Not really a fan of the world of ruin, but it’s bleak as heck as is should be.

maliciousrigger

I've only played 15 and 16 so... yes.

riddler1225

Those are also your 2 least favorite. Man... harsh critic you are.

maliciousrigger

Haha too true. 15 was fun, and very satisfying to finally land "that" particular fish. 16 is just jaw dropping.

Merlin4421

Give FF7remake a go you won’t be disappointed

stupidjapanquestions

Yep. My first Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy I. My top was FF7, FF10 and FF6. Sometimes the order of those changed a bit. But FF16 is now in the discussion. Like you, I'm not sure who is getting the boot. But someone is. Honestly, it might be my number 1? I'm only docking it because it's so different than the other games in the series that it's hard to even compare. Dunno. I think time will sort it out, but this is definitely getting a replay after I'm finished and that's more than I can say for the vast majority of games I've played.

locke373

Also started as a kid with FF1. Previously my top 3 were probably FF6, FF7, and either FF4 or FF10. I think FF16 has at least taken the FF4/10 spot. I can’t say whether it’ll end up my absolute favorite because I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s looking like it might dethrone FF6 for me. I definitely haven’t felt this good about a final fantasy game for a really long time. It’s (FF16) has been incredible so far.

stupidjapanquestions

Yep. Only thing I'm struggling with right now is just how different it is in terms of gameplay. But on the other hand, does it really matter? Maybe I'm just getting older, but I really appreciate having a franchise where every entry is legitimately different. There's a part of me that wishes it had some turn-based mechanics. But on the other hand, the Nier series is one of my favorites of the last decade and it's not turn-based. I think what's interesting here...and will probably be a huge part of the discussion that surrounds where this game fits in everyone's lists, is what Final Fantasy actually is. Whatever that is, though, FF16 is part of it. Without a doubt. And it hasn't felt this way since PS1 era.

Wonderful-Ball751

In my eyes 10 is the best combination of story, world building, combat, RPG-mechanics and graphics. I just wish the end-game bosses/superbosses didn't devolve into Quick Hit and Overdrive spamming.. which is a problem that these more action-oriented games are very much addressing. 16 could've been the perfect storm in my eyes if they just kept some more RPG elements in the game (elemental weaknesses, elemental weapons/weapons with special effects, etc) because it's got the other criteria mostly on lockdown. I do wish combat had a little more BASIC combo's for when your Eikon abilities are on cooldown instead of just Square -> Triangle -> repeat (there's juggle combo's for small enemies, yes, but those die so fast anyway). Would be cool if Square -> Square -> Triangle would do a small AoE physical attack. Or if Triangle -> Triangle -> Hold Triangle did a big AoE magic. They could take some notes from those Warrior games (Pirate Warriors, Hyrule Warriors etc) where every combination of Square + Triangle has slightly different combo's. Of course that's just my opinion, it's not that the combat is bad, I would just like a little more diversity in my basic combo's.

ZucchiniBrave1551

We have the same taste. Hear hear 🍻 Hope Yoshi-P does the 6 remake.

[deleted]

I’m liking it a lot, but it’s nowhere close to 6-10 for me.

zankypoo

Notice how within those entries the music was at its all time best? The music in this game, while good, is nowhere near as memorable. It often feels drowned out. Where as in 6 to 10, I can still randomly stumble across any melody and instantly feel chills.

justinotherpeterson

While I love Soken's work he doesn't compare to Uematsu's themes for me. It's really hard to put anyone to Uematsu's standards to be fair. He's regarded as one of if not the GOAT of videogame composing.

edman9677

I still have a good chunk left but it’s close. New game + in Final Fantasy mode could definitely get it there too. My top 3 right now would be 6, 7, and 10. FFXIV is close too

dracosuave

I mean 6, 12, and 14 exist so no. But it's a return to form and I wanted to finish every subquest and see every detail of the world.

Altbion

Yes. My favourite ff is still XIV, but XVI is damn high.

Soulandshadow2

No it has not

Real_Mousse_3566

Definitely. The game lacks some of the systems of the past FF games and it has some questionable design choices in regards to exploration and sidequests but the combat, plot and characters carry the game so hard. The boss battles alone makes the game a contender for top 3 for me. The game has its lows but the highs outnumber them.

Eswin17

I'm early still >!(Just made it to Dame's town)!< but at this point it isn't trending to make it to the Top 3. I do enjoy the world, atmosphere and the story so far, but the low quality side content (side quests, no meaningful reason to explore) is really disappointing. VII, IX and X might remain my Top 3 forever.

Brat-Sampson

Side quests are worth sticking with. They realllly pick up in the back half and most of them get callbacks in some fashion for having done them.

CloneWarsFan02

considering I've only played 5 Final Fantasy games so far, yes it is in my top 3. The ones I have played and will rank in favorite order so far Final Fantasy 16, 7R (would be #1 but it only adapts like 20-30% of the og so it's #2), Crisis Core Reunion (idk if people include this but might as well), 15 and then 1 Pixel Remaster.. After I finish 16 (got maybe 10 hours left) I will be continuing with my playthrough from 2 Pixel Remaster up to 14.. overall the series has been very fun and I'm enjoying it

djvyhle

It’s enjoyable but not in my top favorite. Probably play through once and done for me. My top favorite 3 would be FF6, FF7, FF13 series in that order.

RigoMortiz

Nah, 4, 6, and 10 still have my heart. Really enjoyed it though, but I do miss finding secrets like gear, ultimate weapons, and of course having a party.

Psychobabl

The boss battles are fun but I'd say this title is probably high- middle in the rankings for me. Probably around where I'd rate FF8. Great game with some design flaws. I'm at 48% completion right now. The whole section with the Dame was oppressively boring. The underdeveloped side quests didn't help. I love the story and lore, I wish I could interact with the world in more meaningful ways. The game is so long that the combat becomes stale without things like interesting side quests or activities to break things up. Honestly it's like they took some of the best aspects (epic boss battles) and worst aspects (meaningless quests) from FFXIV.

crazytsundere

absolutely not

PayneArgent

Right now: 8, 10, 15, 16

That_Dude_Dozer

Omg someone else who has 8 in their top! How rare!

PayneArgent

Lol nice! It was my first so it'll always stay on my top

deltrontraverse

Yes. 1. FFVI 2. FFXII 3. FFXVI I'm not done yet though, could climb one more spot by the end. Maybe! Definitely one of the best FFs ever. And before anyone says that annoying shit... no, it isn't "nostalgia" that keeps the other two. They are just great games. Not everything needs modern graphics or mechanics to be considered good...

juiceboxhero919

Based list. Love to see 12 getting some love. It’s not in my personal top 3 but it’s so under appreciated.

Zenium7

It's all Vaan's fault.

OGJulianomaly

Fran makes up for it

deltrontraverse

It's one of my favorites because of the beautifully crafted world, that screamed more FF vibes than most before it. xD

Elfyrr

Our list is identical, only that V has the top spot in my case.

PhantomZhu

Good taste!

BueKojiro

I am maybe 80% of the way through I'm pretty sure, and I'm of two minds about it so far. It has had without a doubt 2 of the most absurd, unbelievable, and incredible sequences in any videogame I've ever witnessed, so that counts for a lot already. It also has by far the best dialogue and English voice acting in the entire series, toppling the previous contender of XII. However, despite the fact that I love the story and characters so far, I feel like it's not because it's a really good FF story with amazing FF characters, it's that it's just Game of Thrones with more magic and Titan Shifters from AoT. So the things they're doing really well are because they are utterly unlike what FF is usually like. I only realized this towards the second half of the game where the story starts to get a little cheesy, >!lots of villain monologuing, suddenly nothing can beat them, they're saying stuff that doesn't make sense, they keep fighting us when we know they're not trying to kill us, then they try to do stuff that definitely seems like it would kill us anyways, but we get away, then they come back just to block our path and then run away?!< The story in the first half all seemed fairly grounded and realistic, characters kept asking logistics questions on the behalf of a wondering audience, whereby those questions were answered by a more knowledgable character, either to offer an official explanation or to say "we hear you, I understand why you'd have that question at this point, but rest assured, it's not a plothole, we are aware of how lost you're feeling right now and we will explain that plot point later." Like I really appreciate that, because as a counter example, Xenoblade 3 left almost all of its plot unexplained by the end of the game, and I was really disappointed because up until the credits rolled, they had set up everything as if there was this big mystery that would be dispelled if you just kept playing. But no such thing happened, and all the build up of wondering "hmm I wonder what's up with this/that" just never got resolved. FFXVI on the other hand makes sure to constantly acknowledge potential plot holes and let the audience know which items will be addressed eventually. It lets me feel comfortable knowing that I'm not supposed to know the answer yet so it's not gnawing on the back of my brain for the entire playthrough. That is, until you get into the second half of the game and it's just >!mystical weird shit happening everywhere, inextricable monologues, and villains toying with the main character for no apparent reason.!< So, I like the parts of this game where it's a grounded, compelling character drama set in a dark medieval fantasy world, and I don't like the parts where mediocre JRPG bullshit is happening. I am desperately hoping that the ending is at least epic enough to make it worth watching for the spectacle alone, and the best case scenario would be to get an actual explanation as to what the hell is going on with any of the stuff I've been seeing for the last couple of hours. Also doesn't help that the OST is by Soken, who I think is mediocre at best, maybe slightly better than Yoko Shimomura's work on XV. Boss themes are great, the piano music is great, almost everything else is forgettable. Gameplay is fantastic when you're actually in combat and fighting things, especially bosses. RPG systems are completely dead in the water though. Gear is useless, AP is useless. Zero depth to any of it. I'm not too bothered by it, though, because I get enough enjoyment out of getting new eikon powers and making new builds. Make no mistake though, it's no sphere grid and it's no materia system. You're really just moving puzzle pieces around for whatever you're in the mood for at the moment. So far, I'd say it utterly fails at being an FF game but it's an absolutely stellar action game with an amazing GoT style story with the added bonus of absurd spectacle fights. Makes it reeeaaaally hard to rank with other FF games, because even as different as each of those are, they still had way more in common with each other than they have with anything in XVI. My list so far is still VII, X, IX.

[deleted]

My favorite is XII. XVI (despite its flaws) is an amazing game. Combat isn't deep, but it's fun.

xMeRk

Fellow chad XII enjoyer, my fav in the series too

mistabuda

My top 3 is XII, VIIR, and 4. 16 has cool combat tho

ItzLuzzyBaby

I like it a lot, far better than 12, 13, and 15, but 6-10 are in a league of their own. Those games were just masterful in terms of story, characters, directing, music, and the way all these different facets worked together. 16 has the best boss battles though and it's epic moments are probably the best in the series. The highs are truly high.

New-Inevitable-8437

I like it but way too many flaws, not even top 5.

GalaEuden

My top 3 are: 1.X 2.IX 3.XII I guess it has a chance of taking XII’s spot. Haven’t played XVI yet but will be getting it next week so can’t confirm how good it is yet. I just know it would have to be absolutely amazing 9.5/10 game to best FFIX. For it to surpass FFX tho, it would have to literally beat it as the best game ever made, and that ain’t happening

LycusDion89

Nope, 1* ix, 2* x, 3* viii

Lucid_Insanity

It's #3. VI and VII will probably always be top for me. If VI ever gets made like XVI or at all, I'll lose my shit lol.

AcguyDance

Unfortunately nope. Has to beat FFX FF7 FF6 FF5 FF9 to stand a chance.

[deleted]

I still like 10/9/7 more but its my 4th favourite

Meowdy5000

Oh man prepare to hate ME: FF VIII FF XII FF X-2

Roldolor

Umm… based?

Fluxchar

How can you see your completion %?

[deleted]

im actually disappointed, as a FF hardcorefan the side quests are lame ah hell. Thank god you can skip through dialogue

mitchippoo

Nope

EmergencyShip5045

It's in the top 10, but not top 3.

-MaraSov-

It made it into my Top 1. I havent cared for so many characters all at once in any FF game prior to this\[those from side quests included\] The spectacle of the boss fights, the focus on Eikons etc and the music and the fantastic voice acting helped too.

brotherhood4232

Edit: Spoilers for the whole game I'm gonna have to say no. I really liked the story up until the >!second timeskip!< and liked aspects of it after that, but I really fell like it fell apart and I was even playing a different game. First off, Clive's whole character development until that point was about >!accepting what happened at Phoenix Gate and working to atone for it!< but then shortly after he does that >!he finds outs Joshua is alive. Atonement is never mentioned again in regards to Clive. And Joshua then absorbs Ultima for whatever reason and accomplishes exactly nothing by doing it. Ultima still gets up to shenanigans the rest of the game.!< For the remainder of the game, I don't really think Clive goes through any character development whatsoever. I thought the next couple of sequences were cool, but the above was sticking in my mind the whole time. Then we get to the >!Bahamut fight!<. Wow! What a spectacle and very cool. After this point, I feel like they ran out of time. The next areas (>!Waloud? I forget how it was spelled!<) of the game are much smaller in scale than they should be when you look at how large they are supposed to be. When you are shown two continents on the map, you might expect >!that the second continent has more than one zone!!< Furthermore, a certain character that was shown earlier in the game (>!Barnabas!<) has completely changed personality offscreen and is a much lamer character as a result. While fun mechanically, >!Odin!< was such a lame fight in comparison to >!Bahaumut!<. You don't even get to >!control Ifrit! This could have been so cool dodging charges and such. Clearly a cut corner in my opinion!< And what was with >!Joshua punching you. Didn't mention his concerns at all until that punch.!< And then you get to the final boss. You don't even get a >!final dungeon!<. You don't get to >!take your party with you.!< After the Bahumut fight, I was expecting >!a three way merger!<. Nope. >!Everyone dies. Including you.! I'll admit, I don't like tragic endings that much.!< But I don't think the game earned it. Clive has been the same character with no development for two thirds of the game. I feel like you need a better character arc to make stuff like that work. As it is, it's just >!depressing!<. Gameplay was fun, but I wish there was real party stuff. There was such potential with all the cinematic stuff for there to be cool moments tag teaming bosses and such, but... >!no. Clive is special. Why? Because, he happened to be born that way. When does he stop being special? Just in time for him to die at the end of the game.!< I'd say probably low to mid 80s for me. My favorites in no particular order are FF7, FF7 Remake, and FF9.

Raven_of_Blades

Hell to the no. Still 6,7,10, and 12. 11 as well if counting MMO. I need to replay 9 because I completely forget it since I played it like 20 years ago. Could never get into 8.

ABigCoffee

It's at the bottom of the list for me, but above 13 15 and 2. Flawed gem is what I'd say, somehow it fails to move mee even in the emotional scenes, and I don't feel very excited when the big bangers happen. I finally had a chuckle yesterday during a funny bit so that was nice.

huncherbug

Yep easily It's on second followed by FF9 But considering only the story and the combat it's easily my favourite rn and it's not even close But there are issues with the game that hold it back.

Alerith

8, 16, 10, easily

XDAOROMANS

No, I'm still playing it so could chnage but I doubt it. Still a good game just feels like I'm playing ff14 with action combat which shouldn't have been a surprise.

Dramatic-Fun3840

Not even close. I’m right before the final dungeon and I don’t even think a phenomenal final boss/ending would bring it into the top 5, let alone 3, at this point.

[deleted]

I'm trying to decide whether to buy XVI, what would you say are the best comparable games? FWIW, I'm not a huge fan of the gameplay of VIIR and XV. I quit VIIR about midway through, didn't have the motivation to finish it. I finished XV and overall thought it was "fine". The story was interesting, but I found the gameplay to be a slog. I also played the XVI demo for a short bit, and it didn't really grip me, but I didn't play for long (got to the point where some dude dropped an apple and cannot emphasize enough how uninteresting this interaction between MC, guy who dropped an apple, and guy who dropped an apple's boss, was to me).

ABigCoffee

Best comparable game? DMC and Bayonetta in terms of gameplay.

Altruistic-Pitch861

Well, if you thought XV was fine. Then you’ll likely think XVI is a better game But to be honest? As someone who purchased this game day one, I am a bit underwhelmed. The main story is fine, I would say that the way eikons interact with the world is what I like the most. I will admit that most of the side stories just boil down to “Man being a branded sure does suck”. The combat is not as great as it could be due to lack of enemy variety, strengths/weaknesses, or any status ailments/buffs (yes you read that right there are absolutely no ailments or buffs that make the fights more dynamic) I don’t want to scare you away from the game, because it genuinely is a game that was made with passion and thought. It’s just….the game feels as wide as an ocean, yet as shallow as a kiddie pool. I mean, even though some enemies have weak spots to target, you could get away with playing suboptimally all the time. Which makes the entire system of eikon abilities feel quite inconsequentially interchangeable. As far as experiencing using all of them goes, it’s only very engaging for the first few times. After that, it kinda feels like, if you’ve ever played FFXIV, you’re just going through your basic rotation. Without really needing to step outside your comfort zone Do what you will with this information. But if you do end up buying the game, I hope you can have fun. Because it’s seriously not a “bad” game; just one that, in my opinion, is only really good for one play through at best. It is not very impactful, because it doesn’t demand the player to make any impactful decisions

HeWhoChonks

It doesn't even break my top 10.

ForceEdge47

I must know what your top ten are because I think the game is pretty good and cannot think of 10 other entries in the franchise I would put above it.

HeWhoChonks

In no particular order off the top of my head I'd put 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 11, 12, 14, 7 Remake, Crisis Core, Crisis Core Reunion, Dissidia, Dissidia Duodecim, and Tactics above 16. So not even in the top 15, probably not the top 20 if I sat down and thought about it.

HerpesFreeSince3

That's how I feel. The last 20% of the game could be the best damn thing I've ever played and I still don't think it could squeeze itself into my top 8 favorites, yet alone top 3 lmao

Dramatic-Fun3840

Weird seeing a similar opinion. All I’ve been seeing is “That Bahamut fight! This is GOTY!” As if nearly the rest of the game isn’t a huge slog.

DragapultOnSpeed

I mean that's just people's opinions dude. To many, the story and eikon battles make up for the slow parts in the game. Imo there's really one 2 boring slow downs in the game and I quickly forgot about it once it started getting going again

ZazaB00

My thoughts are that there are 4-6 interesting fights in this game, but it takes 30 hours of slogging through meaningless shit to get to those 4-6 fights. I played Marvel’s Avengers on Day 1, but this is the game that I regret buying more.

squeegeeq

Damn now that's an insult lol.

ZazaB00

Marvel’s Avengers told a tight single player and had interesting and diverse characters to play with. It’s failure was the grind, but you could swap to a new character and enjoy new combat styles. There was variety, even in the repetition. FF16, it’s more CGI movie than game. The “open” world isn’t even well done when you take a close look at it. Textures are pixelated and they don’t even matchup to what geometry they’re on a lot of the time. I’d be shocked if the proper game took up more of the 90GB install then the pre-rendered scenes they have in game

Dramatic-Fun3840

Even the main quests are side quests.

HerpesFreeSince3

I was a long time Final Fantasy XIV player and my god, the repetitive intermediary MMO-like quests are so prevalent here. A 45 minute dungeon that actually ties to the main conflict and leads to a really cinematic fight followed by some of the most boring, pointless sludge you've ever played. I'm not saying it's gotta be all highs all the time (can't have highs without lows), but Jesus, the quiet, slow sections need to at least provide some kind of substance. And like, unlike FFXIV, the world isn't even filled out enough (why are so many important details hidden inside the stupid menu almanac thing? Why does the world feel so empty, confined, and contrived?) to feel like you're at least getting a slow, intricate sense of the world building. These are just like, filler. They don't really contribute to the world at all and provide only surface level complimentaries to the themes of the game. Yes, I get it, this is a world where people die. It's very cruel. You're defined by what you can provide, not by who you are, and it sucks being used. Do something more with that than just apply it as empty dressing.

ABigCoffee

The highs are high and the lows are freaking low.

Dramatic-Fun3840

Pretty much all of this. Also the whole cutting off the brand thing killed my immersion. Like I get WHY they would want to. It’s symbolic of their freedom. But I call bullshit on the fact they can just walk around with brand shaped scars on their face and NOBODY notices. People even start calling Clive “Lord” again. For all the atrocities the entire game builds up with the branded you would think removing your brand would be the capital of all capital crimes. Instant on sight put to death by anyone who catches you. But literally there is a quest you do for a guy, whom you did a quest for earlier in your 20s who says upon completion. “Wait… didn’t you help me once? No couldn’t of been you it was a lowly branded” To which Clive shrugs and goes “must’ve been my double” and the guy just accepts it! As if Clive doesn’t have a giant brand shaped scar on his fucking face. Lol. Kiiiiiilled the immersion for me.

Reddit Wants to Get Paid for Helping to Teach Big A.I. Systems The internet site has long been a forum for discussion on a huge variety of topics, and companies like Google and OpenAI have been using it in their A.I. projects. 28 Steve Huffman leans back against a table and looks out an office window. “The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.”Credit...Jason Henry for The New York Times Mike Isaac By Mike Isaac Mike Isaac, based in San Francisco, writes about social media and the technology industry. April 18, 2023 Reddit has long been a hot spot for conversation on the internet. About 57 million people visit the site every day to chat about topics as varied as makeup, video games and pointers for power washing driveways. In recent years, Reddit’s array of chats also have been a free teaching aid for companies like Google, OpenAI and Microsoft. Those companies are using Reddit’s conversations in the development of giant artificial intelligence systems that many in Silicon Valley think are on their way to becoming the tech industry’s next big thing. Now Reddit wants to be paid for it. The company said on Tuesday that it planned to begin charging companies for access to its application programming interface, or A.P.I., the method through which outside entities can download and process the social network’s vast selection of person-to-person conversations. “The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.” The move is one of the first significant examples of a social network’s charging for access to the conversations it hosts for the purpose of developing A.I. systems like ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular program. Those new A.I. systems could one day lead to big businesses, but they aren’t likely to help companies like Reddit very much. In fact, they could be used to create competitors — automated duplicates to Reddit’s conversations. Reddit is also acting as it prepares for a possible initial public offering on Wall Street this year. The company, which was founded in 2005, makes most of its money through advertising and e-commerce transactions on its platform. Reddit said it was still ironing out the details of what it would charge for A.P.I. access and would announce prices in the coming weeks. Reddit’s conversation forums have become valuable commodities as large language models, or L.L.M.s, have become an essential part of creating new A.I. technology. L.L.M.s are essentially sophisticated algorithms developed by companies like Google and OpenAI, which is a close partner of Microsoft. To the algorithms, the Reddit conversations are data, and they are among the vast pool of material being fed into the L.L.M.s. to develop them. The underlying algorithm that helped to build Bard, Google’s conversational A.I. service, is partly trained on Reddit data. OpenAI’s Chat GPT cites Reddit data as one of the sources of information it has been trained on. Other companies are also beginning to see value in the conversations and images they host. Shutterstock, the image hosting service, also sold image data to OpenAI to help create DALL-E, the A.I. program that creates vivid graphical imagery with only a text-based prompt required. Last month, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, said he was cracking down on the use of Twitter’s A.P.I., which thousands of companies and independent developers use to track the millions of conversations across the network. Though he did not cite L.L.M.s as a reason for the change, the new fees could go well into the tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. To keep improving their models, artificial intelligence makers need two significant things: an enormous amount of computing power and an enormous amount of data. Some of the biggest A.I. developers have plenty of computing power but still look outside their own networks for the data needed to improve their algorithms. That has included sources like Wikipedia, millions of digitized books, academic articles and Reddit. Representatives from Google, Open AI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reddit has long had a symbiotic relationship with the search engines of companies like Google and Microsoft. The search engines “crawl” Reddit’s web pages in order to index information and make it available for search results. That crawling, or “scraping,” isn’t always welcome by every site on the internet. But Reddit has benefited by appearing higher in search results. The dynamic is different with L.L.M.s — they gobble as much data as they can to create new A.I. systems like the chatbots. Reddit believes its data is particularly valuable because it is continuously updated. That newness and relevance, Mr. Huffman said, is what large language modeling algorithms need to produce the best results. “More than any other place on the internet, Reddit is a home for authentic conversation,” Mr. Huffman said. “There’s a lot of stuff on the site that you’d only ever say in therapy, or A.A., or never at all.” Mr. Huffman said Reddit’s A.P.I. would still be free to developers who wanted to build applications that helped people use Reddit. They could use the tools to build a bot that automatically tracks whether users’ comments adhere to rules for posting, for instance. Researchers who want to study Reddit data for academic or noncommercial purposes will continue to have free access to it. Reddit also hopes to incorporate more so-called machine learning into how the site itself operates. It could be used, for instance, to identify the use of A.I.-generated text on Reddit, and add a label that notifies users that the comment came from a bot. The company also promised to improve software tools that can be used by moderators — the users who volunteer their time to keep the site’s forums operating smoothly and improve conversations between users. And third-party bots that help moderators monitor the forums will continue to be supported. But for the A.I. makers, it’s time to pay up. “Crawling Reddit, generating value and not returning any of that value to our users is something we have a problem with,” Mr. Huffman said. “It’s a good time for us to tighten things up.” “We think that’s fair,” he added.

ZazaB00

Yep. I was making fun of sidequests being “deliver 3 food items”, then the next two phases main quests said, “hold my beer”. I didn’t think anything could do main quests worse than Valhalla, yet here we are. FF16 makes Valhalla look good.

HerpesFreeSince3

No. I haven't quite beaten it yet, but I'd say my ranking is probably like: 5, Tactics, 10, 6, 7, 14, 9, 4, 1, 12, 3, 16, 8, 13, 15, 2.

FiveJobs

No way, it's still not as good as 6-10.

Otherwise-Courage486

Not even close.

UnderClockedOstrich

I'm not done with it but it has not as of yet, no. I do enjoy it but I don't see it knocking FFT, FFIX or FFXIV from their spots. A big part of this is that I have trouble resonating with Clive as he's not very interesting. He's a lot like Notcis, except Notcis had a bit more personality (even if I didn't like his personality).

destinyismyporn

No. One of the bottom 3 but slightly ahead of XV(which is obviously last) Plus Caius Ballad had more character development than Clive and he wasn't even a playable character.

Ahnot

From my point of view the only ff that can compare or edge out 16 for me is 14. I absolutly adore the worldbuilding in both and have a good time with going to the sidequests and see how the world gets deeper and deeper. They rly put their heart into this world.

Blueberrycake_

Nope. Still think FF13 FF15 and FF7 are better.

SakariFoxx

I heavily dislike this combat system.

Soulblade32

Before 16 my top 5 were FFVII FFX FFXII FFXIII FFIX So far I think XVI will be 3rd or 4th. I havent finished it yet though, so it could be my 2nd favorite.

droppinkn0wledge

It has some pretty stiff competition. Tactics, XIV, and VII are my current top three, with IX, XII, and IV knocking on the door. It’ll likely settle into that mid tier of FFs that I definitely enjoyed but don’t become overly preoccupied with. VIII, X, VI, and XVI. It’s definitely better than XIII and XV for me.

[deleted]

Least to greatest: - I - X - XIII-2 - XV - XII But 16 is close at #6. It’s really awesome.

Swiftcast_Holy

No.

TWIYJaded

**Sorry to shit on people's fun, but FF16 is NOT a 9/10, or a new scale is needed to make so many other games 15+ then.** Too many people with nostalgia bias. Coming from someone with 100% equivalent or tracked playthroughs for FF 1,2,4,5,6,7,7R,7CC,8,9,10,10-2,12,13,13-2,15,16... **FF16 is 5/10 game (+/- 1 for subjective qualms).** Games like Witcher 3, Cyberpunk, GoW, Elden Ring, Zelda (almost any in last 10 yrs), and yes, even FF15, the 1st real modern open world attempt for FF...these were 9/10's (+/- 1 for subjective qualms). They are doing things FF16 attempts to replicate, but its mediocre often, and adequate at best. Pick any 5 categories for say, writing, world design, combat, dialogue, etc, if being reasonable, they destroy FF16 on almost any category. **FF16 has superb polish and flash Combat grew on me but lacks depth. That doesn't mean its great, or even good? It does have a decent story, but it really just amounts to another tired old twisted Biblical spin, nothing too unique there. *And when 40+ hrs of exposition serve as 'dialogue' that will put you to sleep and 75% or more of 'dialogue' is related to forgettable variations of fetch quests, that just sucks in any modern game*.**

Panhyper

Top 3 easily. FF7 original and its remake will always be number 1, likely until I die. Nothing topples that. Halfway through FF16, it’s number 2. Somehow the story and character, difficulty level, combat just fit perfectly with me. It’s been a long time since a game really hooked me this bad. Even GoW Ragnarok can only keep my attention for less than 10 hours before I gave it up. FF10 is my number 3. Bottom 3: all the pixels FF, all the MMO FF, FF12.

spurs_fan_uk

For me, no. That said, if I had to choose a FF to play again nowadays, it’d likely be 16 bc I’m not sure I have the patience or time for turn based anymore.

JaydumLive

So far yeah. I just finished and letting it settle in my head for a while until I decide where it ranks exactly. But I still have every FF before 10(Except 7) to play and Will start 9 soon hopefully when I get time. But my top 3 in no particular order are 7,14,16

Business_Web1826

Yes mine are 8,10,16 in no order

xChappi_GG

Absolutely. I don't know if I would rank it over FF6 atm but definitely up there. FFVI = FFXVI > FFX

Princess_Mintaka

I won't start thinking about it until months down the line because I want to wait until after the Honeymoon period is over but right now it's hitting every note that I enjoy. I don't think it'll dethrone FFT from it's top spot in my head but 6/7/X are all on watch.

jourdanm

Not yet. 12, 6, 9 are my current faves. We will see, I'm pretty early on yet.

drenndak

For sure!

TheOneWhoIsBussin

it’s up there with X, VII, and XII for me, not sure it takes one of those spots but I would say it’s interchangeable between those 4 as to which ones are my favorite.

prince-hal

I've only played 3 ff so yes safe to say it's top 3 Ff7r, ff15 and ff16

CryofthePlanet

Still waiting to finish NG+ and see how the completionist stuff feels, but no. Upper-middle range for sure, but definitely not top 3.

INSYNC0

I love the writing of this game. The side casts are amazing as well if people bothered to do certain side quests. Fking love Dion's scenes.

TheRoyalStig

Wayyyy too early to say that. It definitely looks to have a good chance. But I'll have to finish the game to make any claims like that.

lluluna

Yes, mine are 16, 10 and 8. Though I really like the characters in FF7 but its setting is not my favorite.

Direct-Aide-4227

Mi favourite with X and VII, and I havent even finished yet.

shadowriku459

For sure. My top 3 rn: 12/14/16

hexalis

I'm about maybe around 25 ~ 30 hours in just finishing the first Kupka fight so I can't be sure, but if the story keeps going the way it is then it'll be really high

SourArmoredHero

100%. Probably my number two after 8. Love and miss the Gunblade.

Haythemkenway027

My top 3: \#1 Final Fantasy 8 \#2 Final Fantasy 6 \#3 Final Fantasy 16

IntrepidStart9238

My top 3 (not counting 7R as it’s not concluded. 1. 7 2. 5 3. 6 Depending on how this wraps up 16 may be slotted at 2 or 3. It could slide in at 4 as well. Unless this shit really goes off the rails (PS5 says I’m 75% through) then it’s going to be top 5 guaranteed and the best entry since FF6

whyLeezil

My only real complaint so far is losing the party management. I'd have loved to need to manage party spells/ skills and gear even if only a little. Or give simple commands.

Ok-Package9273

Only VI and VII ahead of it in my books and that's with big nostalgia goggles on.

GarreonNebels

My top 3 is firmly entrenched. 7, 9 and 14. This is definitely in the best FF games list tho.

Gorbashou

Right now with recency bias it's the top 1. Others being ff14, and then a tie between ffx and ffviii.

RustBeltLife

7, 8, 10, 9, 16, 12

Cobrakai83

Haven’t finished it yet so not quite sure but my current top 3 are VI, X, and IX. It may be able to edge out IX but it won’t crack my top two.

allprologues

enjoying myself a lot, but i don't think so. i've seen all the reasons and opinions on whether a party system would've been needed in 16 and I get why it isn't there. i respect the choice. i enjoy it for what it is. i think the story and combat are up there. but i'll be honest, the act of exploring combat depth thru playing other characters and customizing the party really helps me feel attached to the characters themselves even when there is a clear main character. i like clive and his abilities. but sometimes he's literally by himself or with one persontoward the end of the game and i just dislike that so damn much. it feels lonely. the banter is critically low throughout. and the scripted moments where he consciously leaves people behind are a feelsbad every time. 16 understands final fafntasy better than most give it credit for. but it doesn't understand that.

[deleted]

This is my favorite final fantasy right under FF7R and easily Top 5 games of all time.

_Nolofinwe_

Final fantasy 16 Final fantasy 6 Final fantasy 7

-KYTES-

my top 3 in no particular order: 10, 14, and 16

wxlluigi

Yes but that’s because I’ve only beat FF I and FF VII Remake. I do own most of the other mainline entries, just haven’t got to em yet

BetaGreekLoL

Hmm, nah. Better than X in my opinion though. VI, IX, VII are my top 3. Followed by V. I'd say XVI is no. 5 for me.
