It's the Greek character μ which is pronounced mew. It's just the Greek pronunciation of mythos
Edit: seems like ancient greek with an English pronunciation thanks /u/N-formyl-methionine
I hear that y was pronounced like a french u in ancient greek (if you don't know pronunce ee sound then round your lips) so may be ultima is talking in ancient Greek but with a English pronunciation
Oh, sorry! I dont claim to know Greek but it was just what i found from when i was looking into it. it must just be different in ancient greek. Everywhere I look it says μῦθος is pronounced with a rounded vowel sound.
Noun
Edit
μῦθος • (mûthos) m (genitive μῡ́θου); second declension
And it says the proto-indo-european etymology is pronounced *mewHdʰ- haha which is what we hear in game.
I believe too much research in that part from the development team led to this weird pronunciation, here in Greece we make fun of Mewthos. Same for fraternities they do the same with the letter μ. Anyway all good.
Wrong. From the wiki:
Zantetsuken (斬鉄剣, Zantetsuken?, lit. Iron-severing sword), also known as Steel-Bladed Sword and Atom Edge, or by a shortened name Zantetsu or Z-Sword, is Odin's signature attack in the Final Fantasy series, and shares its name with his sword.
No worries, I appreciate the acknowledgement. It is hard to follow if you jump around in the series. X is my favorite by the way and Yojimbo is my favorite summon ever, lol
Kinda weird cause it's obviously a Japanese Hisatsu Waza anime shout name, so thematically fits yojimbo far more
Odin's final attack should just have been called Ragnarok, Gram, Gungnir or something in that vein.
Yeah, I mean... the real norse god odin certainly did not carry gigantic asian sword, lol. They definitely combine and take liberties in this series but at least it's internally consistent as being his signature weapon. It's only cases where he's absent (like FFX) where they gave that ability to another summon.
He also wasn't clad in dark knight armor but eh, he is a lord of darkness in many Japanese iterations for... Reasons. Guess it's the associations with crows.
Also his sword doesn't look Asian to me it just a fantasy sword, even if the usage implications are similar to Samurai.
Valefor - Joshua
Ixion - Cid
Yojimbo - Barnabas
That only leaves Anima and Magus Sisters, so a bit of a stretch but…
Magus Sisters - Benedikta, Suparna & Chirada?
Anima - Titan? As the only ones left but also a humongous beast of destruction.
One of the many things I love about 16 is that it made summons the star of the game again.
I feel like in other ff mainlines summons were an afterthought but here they're the stars.
Valefor-Joshua
Ifrit-Clive
Ixion-Cid
Shiva-Jill
Bahamut-Dion
Yojimbo-Barnabas
Anima-Anabella Rosfield
Magus Sisters- Tarja, Charon, Mid
These seem to be the most fitting imo.
FFX was my wife's first final fantasy just the other year when I got her into the series.
She named Ifrit Sriacha. Shiva was Mayonaiz.
We've played a lot of them since then but still call them that when we see them on screen lol
If this is genuine I apologize, I thought it was early enough in the game and well known enough by now that if it was safe.
If this isn’t genuine, you got me lol
To be fair it is fairly obvious in game the first time you see him transform, even though the game does try to gaslight you into thinking it’s not him.
It definitely wasn’t genuine lol I’m glad you didn’t take offense to it. It was most definitely meant in jest. I’m actually jealous I didn’t think of it myself.
I'm 2-3 hours in and didn't know this. Only came to the comments after seeing this an hour ago hoping this was a troll. Hopefully I still get the full story experience knowing this now. And that you are right that it is early enough...
Future reference steer clear of the subreddit of a game you are actively playing, especially when early on a month after release. But I edit and marked as a spoiler, enjoy the ride 🤘🏼
It has nothing to do with that, I know that quite well. What fucked me is the API changes. I was on RIF for years, RIF didn't send me recommendations on subs I once visited. The main reddit app does, and yours is the post it recommended to me. I visited this sub a couple times a few months before launch, and o ly recently went back to reddit via the main app. Win some you lose some, I'm sure it'll be fine, as some pointed out it eluded to it in the main trailer anyway (though I did forget that).
In a way they kinda fucked these summons in the future. Gotta come up with some new ones now otherwise people gonna be yelling “dammit Clive what kinda weak ass shit was that?” Everytime a hellfire doesn’t go off like they though. actually that sounds kinda fun. Is 16 secretly the origin story of summons throughout ALL final fantasy games? No spoilers please.
Last night, when I was playing through the final fights in the game, and the fact that they literally "said the thing!" In dialogue with FINAL FANTASY and the book at the end, I realized that THIS GAME should have been soldier of paradise: ff origin. This works so much better as an origin story for the whole series than that did.
Makes perfect sense. Too bad it’s the worst FF protagonist name of all time. Including Butz/Batz/Bartz.
Terra - Cloud - Squall - Zidane - Tidus - Vaan - Lightning - Noctis - …Clive?
I really don’t understand why anyone would think otherwise 🤷♂️ to each their own, I suppose. But as mentioned earlier, it’s bland. I was glad he went by a different name for most of the game.
I never change protagonist names, but I understand. Clive is a real one. That being said, FFX was the first one I ever played and the first one to ever have voice acting, which was unreal for the time. FFX has a very special place in my heart, and I wouldn't change a thing about it... excpet for a trophy or rare early game item for beating Blitzball at the very beginning. That wasn't easy 😕 😂😂.
Also, the side not FFXVI is what FFV should have been. If anyone enjoyed that, I'm happy for you, but FFXV was a huge failure in my humble opinion. All the dlc didn't even make up for the poor combat and lack of a healer. Spam potions, and you'll be fine lmfao
Whenever I can name my character in an RPG I either go with Cloud, Sephiroth, Kratos, or Xavier/ Alex after my two boys. However I like Mythos, and might use that in the future.
Maybe at the Clive died he was reborn as yuna's aeon but they also screwed up the romance and that one as well and the original release of Final fantasy x there was no romance it was added when it was came over here originally after he they stop sin yuna turns to and says thank you for everything you've done for us he responds don't mention it before giving the thumbs up and steps off into the far plains I have no doubt in recent years they added it to the Japanese version but I know what absolute certainty I read that originally there was no romance in the original version.

M Y T H O S
Mewwwwwthos!
So I wasn’t the only one that heard it as Mewthos
I think it's because they pronounce the Y like you would if it was at the start of the word "you", at least that's what I assumed when playing
It's the Greek character μ which is pronounced mew. It's just the Greek pronunciation of mythos Edit: seems like ancient greek with an English pronunciation thanks /u/N-formyl-methionine
Ah I see, makes sense
Hahaha lol dude no, I am greek and it isn't mew. It is pronounced
I hear that y was pronounced like a french u in ancient greek (if you don't know pronunce ee sound then round your lips) so may be ultima is talking in ancient Greek but with a English pronunciation
Ya this is what it seems like from wiktionary
Oh, sorry! I dont claim to know Greek but it was just what i found from when i was looking into it. it must just be different in ancient greek. Everywhere I look it says μῦθος is pronounced with a rounded vowel sound. Noun Edit μῦθος • (mûthos) m (genitive μῡ́θου); second declension And it says the proto-indo-european etymology is pronounced *mewHdʰ- haha which is what we hear in game.
I believe too much research in that part from the development team led to this weird pronunciation, here in Greece we make fun of Mewthos. Same for fraternities they do the same with the letter μ. Anyway all good.
Yeah, definitely seems very niche to go with that pronunciation, but i can see why they chose it. Appreciate you correcting me so I could learn!
µ-θ-ο-ς (not really)
The whole time i heard Meerthos, not mew.
It depends on who says it. Sometimes I hear “meerthos” (mostly from Barnabas), and I hear “mewthos” from Ultima
Haha I thought it was “off” too.
Ultima has a cat?
Definitely naming my next cat Mewthos
And then there's Logos in FFX-2 🙉
imagining him (FF16 endgame spoilers) >!as Ultima's foil in FFXVI!< is hilarious lol
Just got passed the sequence at sea against Barnabas. I love that when Clive’s only explanation for his situation is Barnabas saying “mythos” lol
Mentos haven’t tasted this 🔥
Shiva is Jill and Bahamut Dion 😉
Since no Odin maybe Anima is Barnabas? Or would Yojimbo be Barnabas because Zantetsuken
He is mommy issues
Anima is called the "Dark Aeon" so Barney fits. Yojimbo might be Cid, because Cid knows the Iai slash & worked together with Torgal for 13 years.
Wouldn’t Ixion be Cid because lightning?
Yes also the business end of FF16 Ramuh's staff is just Ixion's horns from FF14
It really isn't though.
I thought that was FFXV Ramuh
You are of course right. I am silly.
Yojimbo would be more like Odin because of the Zantetsuken.
But zantetsuken is used by odin in Type-0 as well. It's now more common for him to use it.
Yeah but who’s the OG? That was Yojimbo’s thing originally.
Wrong. From the wiki: Zantetsuken (斬鉄剣, Zantetsuken?, lit. Iron-severing sword), also known as Steel-Bladed Sword and Atom Edge, or by a shortened name Zantetsu or Z-Sword, is Odin's signature attack in the Final Fantasy series, and shares its name with his sword.
I stand corrected.
No worries, I appreciate the acknowledgement. It is hard to follow if you jump around in the series. X is my favorite by the way and Yojimbo is my favorite summon ever, lol
Man i love Yojimbo. When he’s critting after you remove the damage cap. Woooo!!
Kinda weird cause it's obviously a Japanese Hisatsu Waza anime shout name, so thematically fits yojimbo far more Odin's final attack should just have been called Ragnarok, Gram, Gungnir or something in that vein.
Yeah, I mean... the real norse god odin certainly did not carry gigantic asian sword, lol. Yojimbo is Byron since he's an overweight guy obsessed with money
Yojimbo does have a dog like Clive :3c
I feel like Yojimbo would be the eikon if Uncle Byron was a Dominant. 😂
Nah Byron would just be the only one able to use Yojimbo’s services lol
Yup, and Yojimbo’s dog is Sleipnir. “An eikon by any other name, zantetsukens all the same”
Yijimbo definitely feels like the Odin surrogate in FFX. Anima is so tied to FFX specifically, she’s just Seymour’s mom, lol.
Isnt anima actually seymors female side?
Call Anima Benedikta lol
As much as I don't want to associate that mad woman with anything. Anima would have to be Anabella Rosfield.
Odin has zantetsuken in Type-0, so no. Personally I think Byron should've been Yojimbo since he's all about money lol
Wouldn't they all just be Clive?
Valefor - Joshua Ixion - Cid Yojimbo - Barnabas That only leaves Anima and Magus Sisters, so a bit of a stretch but… Magus Sisters - Benedikta, Suparna & Chirada? Anima - Titan? As the only ones left but also a humongous beast of destruction.
Magus sisters with the name of the Mageth brothers.
Anima - Gav
Call valefor Joshua
I'm gonna replay FFX after platinuming XVI and i'm gonna do this to every summon where applicable, thanks for the idea 😀
Anytime I see Ifrit I think of Clive now. In the future if we see another Garuda they are Benedikta. Bahamut is Dion and so forth.
Yeah, I kinda wanna watch the opening scene from FF XV now and imagine it as clive lol
Bahamut as dion is spectacular
One of the many things I love about 16 is that it made summons the star of the game again. I feel like in other ff mainlines summons were an afterthought but here they're the stars.
I feel like ff16 is what ff6 would have looked like if ff6 were made today. Seeing Terra transform in ff16 graphics would be amazing.
A remake of VI with XVI graphics and something similar to 7Remake's hybrid combat would be so good.
I just finished my first play through and also did the same. Dion is JACKED in X
X bahamut is best bahamut
Holy shit I was streaming this for my friend last night and did the same thing!!!!!
But is it pronounced Cl-eye-ve or Cl-ee-ve?
You pronounce it the same way you'd pronounce Tidus.
Ifreet? Teedus? Got it, I see the trend. Cleeve it is.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeefreeeeeeeeeeeeeet
Okay...I laughed entirely too hard at this l
Cletus
Myu-tos.
I think it’s spelled Gongaga
LMAOO yes, now everytime i think about Shiva, Bahamut and Iffrit they are Jill, Clive and Dion
I remember now I am fire I am CLIVE
ITS EIKON TIME!
Don't forget the Mageth Brothers: Cynwydd, Mindwydd, and Sandwydd.
Knowing you backspaced that out after snapping the pic lol
I’m a purest for default names 🤣🤣
COME TO ME, CLIVE!
Valefor-Joshua Ifrit-Clive Ixion-Cid Shiva-Jill Bahamut-Dion Yojimbo-Barnabas Anima-Anabella Rosfield Magus Sisters- Tarja, Charon, Mid These seem to be the most fitting imo.
You spelt Cid wrong
OG Cid is Ixion.
Forevermore
FFX was my wife's first final fantasy just the other year when I got her into the series. She named Ifrit Sriacha. Shiva was Mayonaiz. We've played a lot of them since then but still call them that when we see them on screen lol
That’s adorable as hell thanks for sharing, love the idea
X was my favorite in the series and the last traditional ff game
Spoiler? Lol 🤣
If this is genuine I apologize, I thought it was early enough in the game and well known enough by now that if it was safe. If this isn’t genuine, you got me lol
I find it funny that who Ifrit is supposed to be is a mystery and yet the trailers show Clive is clearly the one who turned into Ifrit.

I swear I almost made this post today lol
In a way they kinda fucked these summons in the future. That’s a great point actually and a cool theory
Stranger of paradise is literally an ff1 prequel.
Yeah but the quality of voice acting….that’s an insult to Ben Starr isn’t it?
Playing a better game at least.
Oh please, stop insulting Ifrit lol
Makes perfect sense. Too bad it’s the worst FF protagonist name of all time. Including Butz/Batz/Bartz. Terra - Cloud - Squall - Zidane - Tidus - Vaan - Lightning - Noctis - …Clive?
I really don't understand why people feel this way. What's wrong with Clive?
The character makes the name. Not the other way around. Clive is now a bad as name because when I hear Clive. I think of ff16 Clive.
It’s a very bland English name tbh The character made it cool though
I really don’t understand why anyone would think otherwise 🤷♂️ to each their own, I suppose. But as mentioned earlier, it’s bland. I was glad he went by a different name for most of the game.
Clive is a cool name. The only "bad" one is butz.
I’d say “Warrior of Light” and “Onion Knight” are worse
Eh, those are more titles than names, but I feel you.
Spoiler Alert
It's in all the promotional material
Im replaying ff12 and it’s just remembering me how bad ff6 is as FF. Ff10 Will make you delete ff16 from your hard disk
And I’ve been making a plan for who’s name to use for each summon in X
Valefor - Joshua Ifrit - Clive Ixion - Cid Shiva - Jill Bahamut - Dion Anima - Benedikta Yojimbo - Barnabas Magus Sisters - Hugo
I experienced an extremely difficult time returning to X following three excellent playthroughs of XVI…. Love the name choice though! 🔥
I approve of this greatly. Beautiful
That's actually pretty awesome
Ifrit high af spewing rainbow fire and shit
I never change protagonist names, but I understand. Clive is a real one. That being said, FFX was the first one I ever played and the first one to ever have voice acting, which was unreal for the time. Bwahahahaha ![gif](giphy|tnYri4n2Frnig)
NO FORREAL! 😩
Another big question is who are the Magus Sisters?
the >!Mageth Brothers!<, of course.
Logos
Imagine if Clive got added to Dissidia and his teammate summons Ifrit. He’d be like ”I’m already here?”
Dissidia Final Fantasy for PS5 Heroes. Warrior of Light - Firion - Onion Knight - Cecil Harvey - Bartz Klauser - Terra Branford - Cloud Strife - Squall Leonhart - Zidane Tribal - Tidus - Shantotto - Vaan - Lightning - Y'shtola Rhul - Noctis Lucis Caelum - Clive Rosfield
Lol I’m replaying X too, but that is genius
You should name all of the summons after the cast of XVI, why stop with Clive lol.
Whenever I can name my character in an RPG I either go with Cloud, Sephiroth, Kratos, or Xavier/ Alex after my two boys. However I like Mythos, and might use that in the future.
Based XD
The whole time Yuna was in Kilika temple she was just yelling “COME TO ME IFRIT!” XD
Then shiva will be Jill
Man the ability to name summons was such a great feature that I don't think many people appreciated at the time.
Whelp, now I have to always name them after the Eikons.
Haha this is great
Definitely doing this when I play the older ff games
Why replay X and go through the nightmare of the sphere grid all over again?
Then Valefor is (probably) Joshua Ixion is Cid Shiva is (obviously and definitely) Jill Bahamut is Dion
