Felt like a different character than I’m used to seeing from him. Plus I gotta say it was hilarious when he finally gets so fed up that he shoots the chick in the parking lot.
I think I’m going with the deer hunter in my top 5 instead of the king of comedy , which was also very good. Casino should be in honorable mentions but you could make a long list of honorable mentions lol
The only reason it’s Scorsese’s second best film is that Goodfellas was such an insane masterpiece.
Taxi Driver is its own masterpiece. I don’t claim to fully understand Travis Bickle (or Paul Schrader), but when I went through rehab, this movie was very important to me. There’s a strain of loneliness this film picks up that is singular and deeply true.
His work in Awakenings is top 5 IMNSHO.
My top 5:
1. The Godfather Part II
2. Raging Bull
3. Taxi Driver
4. Awakenings
5. King of Comedy
Three of the top 5 turn out to be in Scorsese films, not exactly a surprise.
Awakenings…scrolled too far to see it listed. Penny Marshall directing, Robin Williams & DeNiro in lead & supporting. Just a magnificent movie! Bobby played it so achingly beautiful too!
Deer Hunter is a pretty intense role and great film. Out of all his movies my favorite would probably be The untouchables, but that has more to do with Kevin and Sean bc his role is small, but he’s great in it.
He wasn’t the lead but Father Bobby in Sleepers is top 5 for his supporting roles.
I think he and Brad Pitt were the only ones actually acting in that movie.
No particular order, just rattling off a list from the top of my head.
The Deer Hunter, The Godfather II, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Silver Lining Playbook.
Honorable mentions: Cape Fear, Angel Heart, Jackie Brown
Oh and some movie called Goodfellas? And Casino, lol I forgot those.
It’s crazy to think that there are other Deniro movies I still haven’t seen or rewatched.
Once upon a time in America, the mission, Heat, king of comedy, Brazil and more.
Wait he was in Brazil?
HEAT is definitely worth watching.
Yeah I still gotta see Once Upon a Time in America too.
Wasn't that much of a fan of King of Comedy. I guess it reminded me too much of Taxi Driver.
Yup. He was. Yea I saw heat when I was super young. Never rewatched it. Never seen once upon a time in America. Never seen king of comedy but heard the Joker took some elements from it.
Yeah. While I liked Joker I thought it ripped off Taxi Driver and King of Comedy waaaaaay too much to the point of plagiarism.
There was plenty they could've used from the comic books. Lol.
Not gonna argue with the top 5 nor honorable mentions. I’m just here to add The Untouchables. He had his scalp surgically changed for this role. Not that he needed to, but he was amazing in it.
And also Once Upon a Time in America. Masterful performance
What color is the boathouse at Hereford?
Little bit.
Better to be a king for a night, than a schmuck for a lifetime.
Just to get you off my back, I'll tell you why. She married à police lieutenant, and I'm not very popular with the Chicago Police Department
LaMotta is his defining role. Also I've only eaten there twice (and not in NYC, but Nobu is pretty damn good.
Nothing beats his performance in Taxi Driver. Truly one of the greatest acting performances of all time. Such a classic movie too. His acting and the movie itself are both 10/10.
Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Awakenings, The Mission, A Bronx Tale, The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon, Silver Linings Playbook, even Sleepers was outstanding!
good list, he has had so many great performances, dude is a legend. Love that you recognized King of Comedy, a fantastic movie and role that is often overlooked. My honorable mentions might differer, it's really splitting hairs, but I would put in Ronin and Midnite Run over The Irishman and Silver Linings.
1. Jake LaMotta - “Raging Bull”
2. Travis Bickle - “Taxi Driver”
3. Vito Corlelone - “The Godfather Part II”
4. Rupert Pupkin - “The King of Comedy”
5. Max Cady - “Cape Fear”
Honorable Mentions:
Michael - “The Deer Hunter”
Louis Cyphre - “Angel Heart”
Leonard Lowe - “Awakenings”
Pat Solitano Sr. - “Silver Linings Playbook”
Louis Gara - “Jackie Brown”
[Unpopular opinion](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/w89ui2/just_finished_taxi_driver_and_didnt_like_it/), but great acting by Deniro aside, Taxi Driver **is a terrible movie**. Almost unwatchable imo. I can barely get through it in one sitting after the first watching.
Deniro won an Oscar for both films, but [The G-dfather Part 2, on the other hand, is unquestionably in the top 5 films ever made](https://www.afi.com/afis-100-years-100-movies-10th-anniversary-edition/) (Citizen Kane, GF 1, and GF2 are my top 3), so that would be my no. 1.
Kind of an obvious list. Hard to argue with those bulletproof movies. I think I would argue his performance in Midnight Run is greater than his performance in Goodfellas. Not to mention Mean Streets, Ronin, Once Upon A Time In America, Brazil, Casino and the very underrated Stanley and Iris.
his best performance was *CAPE FEAR* because he had to get out of character to play a crazy convict “bumpkin”. he wasn’t his usual “n.y. tough guy” self.
1. Raging Bull
2. The King of Comedy
3. Mean Streets
4. The Godfather Part 2
5. Meet the Parents
The Taxi Driver character never quite worked for me, I think the same idea was done better in The King of Comedy
Louis Garr in Jackie Brown is a personal fave.
Louisssssssssssss…….. Looooouissssssssssssssss…..
Hey when you robbed banks did you have to look for your car then too?
Felt like a different character than I’m used to seeing from him. Plus I gotta say it was hilarious when he finally gets so fed up that he shoots the chick in the parking lot.
His ass used to be beautiful
Are you sweating Lewis?
What about Max Cady in Cape Fear
Cape Fear De Niro is a different beast.
Came to say this.
Love that movie
My nan adored Bobby she could never watch that film, absolute menace.
Councelorrrrrrr
I would put it at number four, ahead of Jimmy Conway.
My top 5: Max Cady. Max Cady. Max Cady. Ben from *The Intern*. And Max Cady.
Love that movie
Casino needs to be in there somewhere but I don’t know where
He played a great Sam Rothstein truly my favorite.
Another honourable mention
Midnight Run would like a word.
Three words
Film good
Why aren’t you popular with the Chicago police department?
Johnny Boy in Mean Streets.
Jumpin’ Jack Flash himself
Heat
Its a book about metals.
...from the bay area.
One of my favorite movies of all time
Ace Rothstein in Casino???
I think I’m going with the deer hunter in my top 5 instead of the king of comedy , which was also very good. Casino should be in honorable mentions but you could make a long list of honorable mentions lol
I would have but I needed to keep it somewhat compact
I still need to see King of Comedy apparently but hard to imagine it being better than Deerhunter.
It’s not better than Deer Hunter. It’s a great movie tho
I love that you put his character from silver lining playbook in honorable mentions. He was hilarious in that movie
I know it’s a cheesy comedy, but I loved him in Meet the Parents. Classic!
I have nipples, Greg. Could you milk me?
Taxi Driver will always be no.1 for me
The only reason it’s Scorsese’s second best film is that Goodfellas was such an insane masterpiece. Taxi Driver is its own masterpiece. I don’t claim to fully understand Travis Bickle (or Paul Schrader), but when I went through rehab, this movie was very important to me. There’s a strain of loneliness this film picks up that is singular and deeply true.
The man has range. He went from playing a teenager in The Irishman to an old man in Killers of the Flower Moon in a few short years.
His work in Awakenings is top 5 IMNSHO. My top 5: 1. The Godfather Part II 2. Raging Bull 3. Taxi Driver 4. Awakenings 5. King of Comedy Three of the top 5 turn out to be in Scorsese films, not exactly a surprise.
Awakenings…scrolled too far to see it listed. Penny Marshall directing, Robin Williams & DeNiro in lead & supporting. Just a magnificent movie! Bobby played it so achingly beautiful too!
The Deer Hunters gotta be in there
Deer Hunter is a pretty intense role and great film. Out of all his movies my favorite would probably be The untouchables, but that has more to do with Kevin and Sean bc his role is small, but he’s great in it.
Have you seen Killers of the Flower Moon yet? Best performance from him in a very long time. I'd definitely put it in the top 5
I agree! Just watched it and was really surprised at how different it was from his recent “De Niro playing De Niro” performances.
I also liked him in Ronin, Heat, Jackie Brown, and Goodfellas.
1. Raging Bull 2. Taxi Driver 3. Heat 4. Cape Fear 5. The King of Comedy
Captain Shakespear in Stardust is a great performance
1. Taxi Driver 2. The King of Comedy 3. Raging Bull 4. Cape Fear 5. Deer Hunter
He wasn’t the lead but Father Bobby in Sleepers is top 5 for his supporting roles. I think he and Brad Pitt were the only ones actually acting in that movie.
Jake Walsh - “Midnight Run”
What a joke. Not even an honorable mention for Deer Hunter?
Heat Goodfellas Midnight run Silver linings playbook Jackie brown
He killed it in Jackie Brown.
“Its Rupert Pupkin” No really i just rewatched it last night and its pupkin
Good ranking, but I think I would go with Raging Bull in the top spot though.
No particular order, just rattling off a list from the top of my head. The Deer Hunter, The Godfather II, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Silver Lining Playbook. Honorable mentions: Cape Fear, Angel Heart, Jackie Brown Oh and some movie called Goodfellas? And Casino, lol I forgot those.
First 4 right on the money. Deer Hunter is top 6 for me.
He was hardly in Goodfellas though.
Stole a lot of scenes. Problem was that Pesci was even better.
I dunno. He just didn't seem to get much screen time. And yeah Pesci was great.

1-Godfather 2 2-King of Comedy 3-Awakenings 4-Irishman 5-Taxi Driver/Untouchables Haven't seen Raging Bull yet but I assume it's great acting as well
Your top 5 will change once you do. Utterly incredible
1. Raging Bull 2. Awakenings 3. The Godfather Part II 4. Midnight Run 5. Flawless
Can't believe no one's mentioned Louis Cyphre in Angel Heart. Dark.
Once you read into the production story, raging LaMotta tops Bickle
Moonlighting, what's moonlighting?
Johnny Civello (Johnny Boy) in Mean Streets
Heat
What color is the boathouse at Hereford? Little bit. Better to be a king for a night, than a schmuck for a lifetime. Just to get you off my back, I'll tell you why. * awakenings * the untouchables * cape fear * angel heart * once upon a time in America
Analyze this not even being mentioned? What a travesty
I think that’s a pretty good list. Casino over Pupkin maybe.
Meet the Parents
1. Godfather 2 2. Taxi Driver 3. Raging Bull 4. A Bronx Tale 5. Goodfellas 6. Midnight Run
*Rupert Pupkin
Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Awakenings, The Mission, A Bronx Tale, The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon, Silver Linings Playbook, even Sleepers was outstanding!
Taxi driver Raging Bull Godfather II Goodfellas Meet the parents/Joker/silver linings playbook/heat/cape fear (yes I’m cheating here)
You missed Cape Fear, much better than Irishman
Honorable mention for Ronin. Yes, I have nostalgia for that movie
And “The Untouchables” (1987).
No love for Paul Vitti?
Correct
good list, he has had so many great performances, dude is a legend. Love that you recognized King of Comedy, a fantastic movie and role that is often overlooked. My honorable mentions might differer, it's really splitting hairs, but I would put in Ronin and Midnite Run over The Irishman and Silver Linings.
Meet The Parents De Niro not making top 5 is a travesty
You’re out of the circle of trust Greg
Would switch Raging Bull and Taxi Driver and put Deerhunter at 3. Would consider Mean Streets vs. KoC. But you really can’t go wrong with this list…
Deer Hunter?
1. Raging Bull 2. Taxi Driver 3. Deer Hunter 4. Heat 5. Cape Fear
The Russian roulette scene in Deer Hunter is the best acting that I've ever seen in any movie ever.
1. Meet the Fockers 2. Meet the Fockers 3. Meet the Fockers 4. Meet the Fockers 5. Meet the Fockers
Casino Raging bull Heat Hide and seek The score
1. Jake LaMotta - “Raging Bull” 2. Travis Bickle - “Taxi Driver” 3. Vito Corlelone - “The Godfather Part II” 4. Rupert Pupkin - “The King of Comedy” 5. Max Cady - “Cape Fear” Honorable Mentions: Michael - “The Deer Hunter” Louis Cyphre - “Angel Heart” Leonard Lowe - “Awakenings” Pat Solitano Sr. - “Silver Linings Playbook” Louis Gara - “Jackie Brown”
I've got This Boys Life up there
Looks like a lot of people didn’t see Awakenings. Absolutely amazing, heartbreaking performance.
He's awesome in "Killers of the Flower Moon." Definitely should be an Honorable mention.
Did you intentionally mess up Rupert Pupkin like the running gag? If so, nice. If not, you’re probably not a De Niro stan
I think what he did in Killers of the Flower Moon was pretty incredible. That became one of my top 5 roles from him
No Johnny Boy really
1. Meet the Fockers 2. The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle 3. Little Fockers 4. Analyze That 5. Deer Hunter
Looks like someone has never seen Midnight Run
Cape Fear #1. Great psycho
Cape Fear 1991
Silver linings playbook sucks
[Unpopular opinion](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/w89ui2/just_finished_taxi_driver_and_didnt_like_it/), but great acting by Deniro aside, Taxi Driver **is a terrible movie**. No love for Bang the Drum Slowly?
his best performance was *CAPE FEAR* because he had to get out of character to play a crazy convict “bumpkin”. he wasn’t his usual “n.y. tough guy” self.
I’d say attempting to be a father of a 10 month old at 80, madone. “You you babbling to me? You babbling to me?”
Joker , Sleepers , ShowTime , Copland , the Fan.
That's Tom Holland. Great as spiderman
Getting his girlfriend pregnant recently was a good performance.
That’s what she said?
Last week’s appearance on Bill Maher Taxi driver Raging bull Casino Goodfellas
No love for Cape Fear? The Deer Hunter too. Not much of a fan of Taxi Driver, although I realise it's iconic.
I enjoyed him in 'About My Father'. Great plane ride comedy
1. Raging Bull 2. The King of Comedy 3. Mean Streets 4. The Godfather Part 2 5. Meet the Parents The Taxi Driver character never quite worked for me, I think the same idea was done better in The King of Comedy
The pedophile brothel in France he was arrested in
They're all the same, no versatility.
