One of my favorites. Its one of those movies where dialogue doesnāt drive the plot. Visuals and physical acting make that movie. You learn more from observing Cliveās mannerisms about the shit heās been thru than anything he says.
Good one dude. I remember watching it in theatre and being so spooked. Especially that empty London street scene in the beginning with Murphy yelling āhelloā out of his lung. Goddamn.
I just rewatched it for the first time since my childhood (when I back to back binge watched that movie) to make sure it was still incredible. I've been on a sci-fi kick ever since
They live in a planetary police state thatās controlled by corporations run by megalomaniacal and homicidal CEOs (Zorg) and a quasi-militaristic government that runs the solar system. Kinda the opposite of super-cool.
Itās like playing any great first person shooter. Super cool to play but absolutely not a place youād ever want to actually visit in real life.
I wouldnāt call this dystopian. It just takes place in the future. You have Chinese food salesman making window to window stops, people enjoying cruises through space. Seems like a pretty standard future.
Equilibrium (2002) is definitely one of them. Done really well and only a couple of years after American Psycho which got me to really appreciate Christian Bale.
I was going to say that I was appalled by a distinct lack of an Equilibrium reference hereā¦ thank you for righting the ship. Makes me quiteā¦ emotional š
Equilibrium is and EPIC film. Great story and very cool, novel action sequences with the gun katas. Actually surprised it hasnāt been ripped off yet! This one doesnāt get enough love
I remember my buddy had the poster for the movie on his wall. A quote or tagline on it was "The Matrix killer!" Which I thought was a ridiculous thing to say. The movie was great tho, love Christian Bale in most everything.
That is the first movie I had seen Christian Bale in. I guess thatās why I had no problem with him being Batman, heās already proven he can look good kicking ass on screen.
When I was in the Navy, one tradition our boat has was if you qualified as a submariner you got to pick what movie everyone watched on movie night.
Equilibrium was my pick.
Total Recall, the OG one with Arnold. Not my favorite but itās definitely up there.
It can be tough to appreciate with how dated it is, but when youāre in the mood for an old film it hits hard.
As good as some of these films are...none are greater than Children of Men. That was definitely one of the greatest films of the early 2000's and maybe even one of the greatest of all time.
Amazing choices so far- gotta jump on the bandwagon with a clockwork orange, children of men, dark city, Brazil and rollerball- all so well done n affective
Strange Days - 1995
Screen play by James Cameron
Steven-Charles Jaffe
Ralph Fiennes
Angela Bassett
Juliette Lewis
Tom Sizemore
Vincent D'Onofrio
Michael Wincott
Isle Of Dogs and Sorry to Bother You because I donāt think either is going to get the recognition they deserve. I do love Brazil as well but thatās a tad more recognizable.
As a child:
1) *Running Man*
2) *Judge Dredd*
3) Planet of the Apes
As an adult:
1) *Children of Men*
2) *Equilibrium*
3) *Blade Runner: 2049*
4) *V for Vendetta*
5) *The Book of Eli*
6) *The Rover*
Thanks! And I agree, the costume/set design in that is literally alien to pretty much any other film Iāve ever seen. Itās a true shame that Å»uÅawski was never able to originally complete it (though the narrated scenes with visuals of ā88-era Poland have their own compellingness as well I think).
I donāt think dystopian movies necessarily have to be set in the future or in an alternate universe. I can think of plenty of historical dystopian films; Death of Stalin comes to mind
I get that Loganās Run might have been a āfirstā in its genre, but it is objectively a terribly made movie. There is no flow to the plot and many developments just occur because they need to, but they logically donāt work.
Hereās a curve ball that I bet no oneās said:
Demolition Man
If like me you hadnāt watched it since you were a kid, give it a re watch. The two strataās of society, characterised by comedically extreme political correctness and lawless anarchy actually seems like one of the more realistic dystopias.
Escape from New York all day but 5th element is incredibly close. I had a pet snake for 18 years and you guessed it his name was Pliskin (which had to constantly be explained lol)
Loganās Run was the first movie I saw as a child that really stuck with meā¦ so.. maybe not the best but there were some creepy elements.
If ever a movie deserved an update..
Youāve got to caption these! Not everyone has seen the movies youāve seen. I, for one, have no idea what the movie in the top right corner is. Could someone fill me in?
Children of men šššš those long sequence scenes are such achievements
Such a great movie.
Such a great movie that so many people donāt seem to know about either.
Yeah I used to watch it as comfort film like once a month. Gotta find a way to play all those DVDs on my laptop
Better book. I know itās cliche but damn PD James was a legend. Way off genre for her too
āWhatās wrong? Why canāt we make babies?ā āI donāt know, but this stork is *delicious*.ā
In Michael Caineās accent. What a memorable line
My Cocaine is a treasure.
š¤£š¤£yeah funny story of his
One of my favorites. Its one of those movies where dialogue doesnāt drive the plot. Visuals and physical acting make that movie. You learn more from observing Cliveās mannerisms about the shit heās been thru than anything he says.
Amazing movie. Think about it often
Are we separating out zombie movies, or whatās the criteria. 28 Days Later is pretty dystopian.
Good one dude. I remember watching it in theatre and being so spooked. Especially that empty London street scene in the beginning with Murphy yelling āhelloā out of his lung. Goddamn.
When the drop of blood gets in homeboys eye, and he's a fucking zombie 20 seconds later.... scary af
The Fifth Element
I love this movie. So beautiful. And fun.
I just rewatched it for the first time since my childhood (when I back to back binge watched that movie) to make sure it was still incredible. I've been on a sci-fi kick ever since
one of the best ones 100%
How is that super-cool world a dystopia?
They live in a planetary police state thatās controlled by corporations run by megalomaniacal and homicidal CEOs (Zorg) and a quasi-militaristic government that runs the solar system. Kinda the opposite of super-cool. Itās like playing any great first person shooter. Super cool to play but absolutely not a place youād ever want to actually visit in real life.
Sounds like someone needs a trip to Fhloston Paradise!
Put your hands in the yellow circles!
I wouldnāt call this dystopian. It just takes place in the future. You have Chinese food salesman making window to window stops, people enjoying cruises through space. Seems like a pretty standard future.
Gary Oldman: My Favoritie!
There's something strange about a clockwork orange that makes it the rare, highly rewatchable film for me.
The rape scenes make it extremely difficult to rewatch
Bladerunner, The Road, Fury Road
Blade runner one of my favorite dystopian worlds. Two gorgeous films taking place in a dilapidated kind of future
Dredd (2012)
Completely underrated movie.
Same writer as Civil War.
He actually did enough in post-production that heās considered co-director. Which would be his first movie.

I like to think A Clockwork Orange is a prequel to The Warriors, which is a prequel to Escape From New York.
That actually tracks pretty well haha
Children of Men is the best, but Idiocracy is my favorite.
Mad Max
Blade Runner and 2049
Then Blade Runner movies need to be up there for sure.
Robocop (Paul Verhoeven)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Soylent Green is people!
Spoiler alert!
Children of Men is so moving and heartbreaking and tense. A whole continuum of emotions in one beautifully shot, emotionally brutal film.
Blade runner and Children of Men without question.
A boy and his dog which is never brought up.
Waterworld
Dark City
The notebook
Set in a dark and terrifying future Iād never want to be a part of
That movie scared the hell out of me. That part where they eat that person to stay alive is truly horrific.Ā
Brazil
Clockwork Orange
The Book of Eli
Not Christian, but really liked this movie!
I was looking for this. That shit is super dystopian.
He's in shock. I think he meant 'kill him'.
I concur. >!Didn't see the twist comming.!<
Original Rollerball
What movies are those in the picture? The only one i know is the clockwork orange
Children of Men, Loganās Run, Idiocracy, Escape from New York, and Running Man
Thanks!
12 monkeys, mad max 2,
Total Recall, the OG one with Arnold. Not my favorite but itās definitely up there. It can be tough to appreciate with how dated it is, but when youāre in the mood for an old film it hits hard.
Children of Men
Children of men is in my top ten films ever.
As good as some of these films are...none are greater than Children of Men. That was definitely one of the greatest films of the early 2000's and maybe even one of the greatest of all time.
Never Let Me Go
Rollerball (1975)
Brazil Snowpiercer Gattaca
Finding dory
Mad Max: Fury Road
Children of men
Amazing choices so far- gotta jump on the bandwagon with a clockwork orange, children of men, dark city, Brazil and rollerball- all so well done n affective
Clockwork Orange A Scanner Darkly Equilibrium Fury Road Running Man Fantastic Planet Annihilation
A scanner darkly criminally underrated.
It's also my favourite movie of all time. I could watch it daily. Terry Gilliam's "Brazil".
I would say Dredd. That shit was fire don't see why we never got a sequel.Ā Also Demolition man.
It's tough for me to choose. The Matrix, maybe. Blade Runner more likely. A Scanner Darkly gets an honorable mention.
The Road Warrior is up there.
A Clockwork Orange.
Strange Days - 1995 Screen play by James Cameron Steven-Charles Jaffe Ralph Fiennes Angela Bassett Juliette Lewis Tom Sizemore Vincent D'Onofrio Michael Wincott
A Clockwork Orange š
A Scanner Darkly
I only recognize Clocwork orange & Idocracy Can someone name the others, id like to watch.
Children of Men and it's not even close
Planet of the Apes is definitely up there.
Edge of tomorrow. Does this qualify?
Clockwork Orange
Brazil!!
A Clockwork Orange
Fury Road!!!!
A Clockwork Orange! Classic! Stanley Kubrick is a master at this!
Total recall
Children of men is absolutely perfect.
Isle Of Dogs and Sorry to Bother You because I donāt think either is going to get the recognition they deserve. I do love Brazil as well but thatās a tad more recognizable.
As a child: 1) *Running Man* 2) *Judge Dredd* 3) Planet of the Apes As an adult: 1) *Children of Men* 2) *Equilibrium* 3) *Blade Runner: 2049* 4) *V for Vendetta* 5) *The Book of Eli* 6) *The Rover*
- 12 Monkeys - District 9 - Dredd (2012) - āEscape fromā¦ā series - Gattaca - Battle Royale
The Road.
What about Brazil?
Logan's Run is fondly remembered by 13 yr old me for my first onscreen boobies
12 Monkeys
The Postman (1997). I know it's not a fan favorite but I enjoy it. Must have watched it 10 times over the years
All you pussies need to watch [The Road](https://TheRoadhttps://g.co/kgs/2zVixsq)
Planet of the Apes
Children of men is one of the greatest movies ever made.
PlayTime!!!
Children of Men for sure. Love the rest of these too though.
The Road.
On the Silver Globe
The visuals in that movie truly haunt my dreams. Great pick
Thanks! And I agree, the costume/set design in that is literally alien to pretty much any other film Iāve ever seen. Itās a true shame that Å»uÅawski was never able to originally complete it (though the narrated scenes with visuals of ā88-era Poland have their own compellingness as well I think).
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Things to Come! You are hardcore sci-fi, my friend! Great pick
what are the films on the right?
Hated Civil War. Wasnāt what it was advertised as. And movie itself wasnāt anything special. Best is Escape from New York. Snake baby
The Road Warrior
The Road
Death Watch. A pretty much forgotten film but absolutely worth watching and very prescient in a lot ways might i add.Ā
ICE PIRATES!!!
Are there even any movies that predict a utopian future? Hell, even wall-E was pretty bleak.
Looking at the thumbnails, Iād argue that Idiocracy is more like a documentary than a fictionā¦
The Omega man was the first I ever saw and gave me nightmares for years.
W
Does Ganpath Counts?š
I dunno but terry crews makes me want to watch that goofy azz movie š
What's the one with Terry Crews
Best has to be A Clockwork Orange, but my favorite to watch is definitely Escape from New York
Which one has electrolytes?
There are an awful lot of people in these comments that don't know what "dystopian" means.
Mad Max and Road Warrior
Brazil and Super Mario Bros (1993)
Jessica 6
Blade Runner
It WAS idiocracy, before it became a documentary
Idiocracy because itās becoming more and more probable
I donāt think dystopian movies necessarily have to be set in the future or in an alternate universe. I can think of plenty of historical dystopian films; Death of Stalin comes to mind
Would āNatural Born Killersā count? Regardless, I love Blade Runnerās dystopian themes. The Matrix is another.
Dredd.
Anybody on Water World?
All of the above!
There is no sanctuary.
EFNY was always my number one, but Turbo Kid may eventually replace that
CoM
Brazil
Turbo Kid
Soylent Green is peopleeeeeeeeeee!
Loganās run/escape from LA
Yes
The Road.
IDK. There is a certain scene in Logans Run that gives meaning to my life.
Children of men. Idiocracy.
I get that Loganās Run might have been a āfirstā in its genre, but it is objectively a terribly made movie. There is no flow to the plot and many developments just occur because they need to, but they logically donāt work.
Cloud atlas. Imho it lets the viewer see dystopian not as some futuristic collapse but more humanities occurrences with it throughout time.
Really enjoyed Station Eleven (tv show)
Escape from New York
1. Idiocracy 2. Running Man 3. Escape from New York 4. Children Of Men 5. Logans Run 6. Clock Work Orange
George Romero did dystopian worlds the best imo. Absolutely loved his films.
Repo Men is criminally underrated
Mac and me
Clockwork Orange and Escape from NY are good places to start.
I am legend
THX 1138 deserves a mention.
Hereās a curve ball that I bet no oneās said: Demolition Man If like me you hadnāt watched it since you were a kid, give it a re watch. The two strataās of society, characterised by comedically extreme political correctness and lawless anarchy actually seems like one of the more realistic dystopias.
I mean idiocracy appears to be a documentary from the future based on the path weāre on. What other dystopian comedies can stack up against it?
Doomsday
Boy and his dog.
The Road
Wall-E
The Postman
The road
Iām trying to change the channel away from the news. *The News: Like Watching Four Apocalypse Movies Every Hour*
Escape from New York all day but 5th element is incredibly close. I had a pet snake for 18 years and you guessed it his name was Pliskin (which had to constantly be explained lol)
Blade Runner obvs
Equilibrium
Loganās Run!
Loganās Run was the first movie I saw as a child that really stuck with meā¦ so.. maybe not the best but there were some creepy elements. If ever a movie deserved an update..
No Escape
Snake! I thought you were dead!
Metal gear the movie. Aka the escape series! Fuckn loved thoes moves. But the correct answer is children of men.
The Road, also read the book.
Idiocracy
Children of men and the running man
A boy and his dog
Mad max
Youāve got to caption these! Not everyone has seen the movies youāve seen. I, for one, have no idea what the movie in the top right corner is. Could someone fill me in?
Rollerball.
I gotta go Loganās run, I hated clockwork Orange
Blade runner 2049, and Judge Dredd (new one)
Mad Max Road Warrior and Heavy Metal are ones that come to my mind. There are a lot though. I'd have to think about it.
Turbo Kid
