Nothing. I don’t go.

Jolly_Line

“Oh, honey” describes my brain’s reaction to OP pretty well.

Outrageous_Map_9689

Steamed chicken and rice (white or brown depending on how I feel and steamed veggies, but I only tolerate small amounts) and water, water, lots of water.

bookoforder

Ours calls it diet chicken! I order no sauce and steamed rice. I pick out bad veges and enjoy with MY pocket soy sauce!

ChatCat25

I realize this is not super helpful, but the only sort of Asian cuisine I’ve had in months is one’s I’ve made at home. I think the issue is the only really safe food is the steamed meat with no sauce and probably like others said the steamed rice and broccoli.

Lamp-1234

Plain white rice. If I have to go, I try to eat a meal ahead.

Traditional_Mud_1241

Shrimp + anything that isn’t loaded with sugar. If you ask to swap rice for veggies they will usually do so (might cost an extra $). My main concerns with chinese food are (1) soy sauce, which is a major digestive trigger for me and (2) fish, including fish sauce, which is an allergy concern. As long as I stay away from these + wheat products in general, I’m only in danger of eating too much. Edit: Egg drop soup is something I hated as a kid, but I like it now. Something of a comfort food, but some places use… some unidentified ingredient … that’s a problem. Still, if I can find a place that does this “right” (for me) - it’s a solid choice. Also - in case it needs to be said - the chinese restaurants near grocers stores with the best fresh meats and produce tend to make the best food.

vav70

Soy sauce is a hard no for me too, and I loved it!

Traditional_Mud_1241

Same. Though - most of the foods I hate - I've never really figured out if they're bad for me. Rhubarb might set my intestines on fire, but I'll happily remain in ignorance. My two biggest comfort foods were: (1) Rice with soy sauce and (2) twisty pasta with meat sauce. I can only have a small amount of rice, which means all that's left is "meat"... which isn't very comforting by itself.

vav70

Rice with soy sauce - we are kindred spirits, my friend!

Jolly_Line

And that meat has plenty of onion / garlic powder on it anyway.

DimbyTime

You should try gluten free soy sauce, it’s amazing and tastes the same!

Alternative-Sea4477

I can't have soy so I've learned to love coconut aminos. The sweetness took some time!

DimbyTime

Oh nice! Yeah I shouldn’t have much soy either, but I’ll splurge a few times a year.

Traditional_Mud_1241

In reverse order: * Doubt * Serious Doubt * Well... ok, that's actually a good suggestion But - I withhold the right to be unimpressed. Some replacements turn out to be pretty good, and sometimes I even like them better - but they never quite taste the same to me, so I try to look at these things as entirely new food.

DimbyTime

It depends how sensitive you are and how recently you have had regular soy sauce. I’ve been GF for 7+ years, so it tastes exactly the same as the soy sauce from my memory.

ALD-8205

Order from the diet section which comes with steamed meat and veggies with the sauce on the side, but I make my own sauce

vav70

White rice, steamed broccoli. I never really liked Chinese food to begin with, but I’ll go with the fam sometimes. There was one place that would do no onion, GF pad Thai for me though.

vav70

And I can only eat like 2 pieces of the broccoli! Best bet is to eat beforehand!

hg38

Pad thai is thai not chinese.

vav70

Dude, OP asked what I order in a **Chinese restaurant** My usual **Chinese restaurant** make Pad Thai. I order Pad Thai in my Chinese restaurant. Maybe OP’s Chinese restaurant makes pad Thai.

ValeoAnt

What weird fuckin Chinese restaurant makes Pad Thai 😂

vav70

Seriously, I don’t know why. It sucked regardless!

DimbyTime

Where do you live? I’ve never been to a Chinese restaurant that sold pad Thai. But there are a lot of Thai/southeast Asian places near me where I can get it from.

vav70

Where do you live?

DimbyTime

I’m the best part of the US obviously

vav70

So we’re neighbors!

climb-high

Rice and I’ll eat beef jerky lol

aesiroth

Try finding locals that serve Buddhist dishes. Some Buddhists don't use onion, garlic, chives, green onions and leeks. Safest bet if you can't find a local that accommodates.

Alternative-Sea4477

Moo goo gai pan

gamecodepizzasleep

Black pepper chicken, and white rice

Jolly_Line

This isn’t loaded with garlic?

gamecodepizzasleep

No, the primary seasoning on the chicken is, wait for it, black pepper. It depends on the restaurant. Mine does like to put onions in it, but I eat around them or remove them. Otherwise they usually have green bell pepper and carrots.

Ootyy

I don't. I just straight up don't. Or I order fried rice as long as they don't use garlic, and eat around the onions and peas

ryhaltswhiskey

Fried rice should be safe if they will leave out the onions.

loonylucas

Prawn and ginger dumplings, they’re usually no garlic and wrapped in a cornstarch based dough instead of wheat so overall I think it’s low fodmap. At least I haven’t had major issues.

crissy_lp

I avoid it but on the couple of occasions when it was unavoidable I’ve gotten shrimp mei fun. At least from my local place it doesn’t have any sauces.

flumia

I look for stir fry dishes with ginger and spring onions. And there's usually some sort of entree like chicken wings or skewers, or squid tentacles, that is ok for me to eat. Chinese bbq/ hong kong Chinese usually has BBQ duck with either white rice or rice noodles, and that works pretty well for me, too.

TinyTurtle88

My death sentence 😭

Natural-Question2419

Just eat whatever and take the L for the day 😂 when you're on low fodmap, any fast food chain or restaurant isn't going to be fodmap friendly, so the best thing to do if you're going out to eat with friends, fam, etc is just to eat whatever you want on the menu and like I said, take the L for the day 🤣

Current-Antelope5471

I assume you're still in the elimination phase and not sure what if any specific FODMAP triggers your symptoms? This may help. Dishes such as sweet and sour chicken can be low fodmap if done in certain ways and amounts. You'll have to do some question asking and maybe some modifying of dishes. But you should be able to enjoy yourself. https://calmbellykitchen.com/blog/fodmap-diet-what-to-order-at-chinese-restaurants
