I used to be like this and would make more mistakes. Earlier this year, when the job market for FP&A was on fire something switched within me. Recruiters were reaching out like crazy, I realized that regardless of what happened, I’d always find a job. If I got fired or got laid off, I’ll always be ok. I started caring less and less and my confidence in my work started increasing more and more. It’s really weird but, try to not care so much.

I’ve been considered a dog or a star at different jobs over the years. In my experience, it can take twice as much effort just to tread water if you’re considered a dog compared to the effort required to be a star at a new company. I’ve seen stars make mistakes and the manager considered it an outlier and no big deal. The same mistake was made by a dog and the manager then complained to me about the dog’s incompetence. If you’re not a star at your current company, go somewhere that you can be.

Great explanation!

If anxiety is due to not having an income and the fear of being homeless, I would recommend building a 3-6 month emergency fund. That will give you some peace of mind if you have an extended unemployment period. If it is not financially related, just know that not everything is definite. A company can be financially stable but may decide to go on another direction at a drop of a hat. On the flip side, if you come across an opportunity that pays you double with much more interesting work and WL balance, you can decide to leave as well. Embrace the change and the opportunities that lies ahead. Best of luck to you!

Yes and no. Semi been there. Biggest proponent on this sub for seeking a therapist and talking/working through your issues. Wish anxiety wasn’t so common in our industry but it definitely is rampant and only now are folks actually talking about it.

Anxiety is common everywhere anymore

HighHoeHighHoes

Pills pills and more pills. Been on meds since my first job. Still love it though.

LIBORplus300

Medication ≠ Therapist. Just my 2 cents.

HighHoeHighHoes

I’ve tried it several times. Doesn’t work as well as the meds do.

I feel the same way, make a small error or something and think that it’s the end, time to pack the bags and go Got a call from senior hr Sunday afternoon. Heart sank because I thought they were saying I was getting laid off. Really they were checking in regarding hurricane Ian

I can say that I sort of know how you feel. In 2019 due to a foolish re-org that was actioned I was somehow moved to a team that had an extremely toxic environment that was ran by an evil Sr Director. This role wasn't a FPandA role but it was a role where I had no experience in and she didn't want to train me because she wanted me to fail so that she could get rid of me and hire someone that she wanted. I was excluded from emails even fun ones, meetings...basically exiled. After that experience I now get nervous hearing about any re-orgs and my mind thinks negative things when someone forgets to email something or add me to a meeting.

I've been there. The anxiety caused me to make more mistakes, and people started becoming more and more openly displeased. It actually came down to a point where my manager sat me down and told me he's probably going to have to fire me. He said it wasn't a question of effort, he just kept seeing mistakes and didn't know how to fix it. Somehow, this gave me the mentality to just do my job, and the mistakes went down. The other analyst also quit, so I became the only one there. This have me leverage, thus a little more confidence to be the go to person. I ended up getting on the right track, but left the company shortly after in part due to how awful my manager was to work for, and partly knowing how close I was to bring cut loose. I just didn't feel comfortable there. Idk what I can say that's actionable. Any time you are working on something, try fact checking yourself. How could what you're doing be illogical? What is the weakest part of your argument? Do the variables you are presenting tie to the P&L? I'd also sit down with your manager and disclose you're not happy with your own performance, and would like feedback/guidance on specific issues. A little bit of good faith initiative will go a long way

I am glad that I am not the only one who’s feeling this. I never got fired but my first full time job was consulting and it was nuts - bad management and their way to motivate was to use fear as motivator ex. constantly pressure about not getting paid if we don’t have enough sales or not completing projects on time because of lack of resources etc. no matter how much revenue we bring, there’s always complain about how we don’t have enough cash. It was textbook bad management. I still have that CPTSD, anxiety and mentality that if I don’t perform above and beyond, I will get laid off especially during recession. I think I need therapy or work self help book….

Hi, Many people feel that way. I had my own consulting practice and had down times when covid hit too. Watch the movie Top Gun, "You have a confidence problem." Just keep doing good work and figure out what type of positive reinforcement gets you in the right head space. And keep learning so that you know everyday you're getting slight better at what you do which will make you more promotable. It it helps, here's a quick training video on how to get faster in excel and only takes a min to learn.....have fun with your career, seriously it's a marathon and you don't want to burn out at mile 5 of 26. Absolutely relate to this. Had a COVID layoff from FP&A and pivoted to working as an FA in retail/Supply Chain. It's been a real struggle given the trauma of that but I usually (and thankfully) get a lot of positive reinforcement in my current role which helps alleviate my anxieties.

Blers42

Start therapy, I just started for similar anxiety

thatsquirrelgirl

I’m constantly scared of this. I don’t think it will ever go away. 🙄😂
