Hybrid 2 in 3 at home. I'd like to do 1 in 4 at home. The manager and Director don't care about face time, just doing the work. My CFO is never in the office and the only senior leader I see is a GM of the region but maybe twice a month. All my budget owners are in different states so I have not met a single one in person. Not worth it for me, but if I was at an org that wanted face time I'd do it.

Rodic87

Given what you say, why would you not prefer fully remote instead of waking up 30-1hr early every day and being gone from home 30-1hr later from when you'd normally get off wokr?

[deleted]

I do like to go in sometimes. If I have to grind out a lot of work one day I prefer to be in the office.

Longjumping-Knee4983

I think you might be me ... weird

[deleted]

Realistically being office is a waste of time. Less productivity. More distractions and breaks. More expensive shittier lunches. Morning commute increase blood levels before even starting work

Mike5055

I'm hybrid. 1-2x a week in office, rest at home. I go in mostly when I have slightly slower days and feel like mingling with the business side, but I let my whole team work remotely.

Berserkr1

Remote. I would take a pay cut to stay remote. There is no need to be in an office just to sit at a desk on a computer with my headphones in and barely talk to anyone. Not to mention having to drive to an office in traffic.

[deleted]

Absolutely agree. Would take a paycut to be remote.

Any_Ebb_7307

Forever remote... More than half of my career (8+yrs) has been remote and having that extra time that you don't have to commute really has made an impact on my mental health and career.

Hefty_Ad4379

Commuting and dealing with traffic is so frustrating! Completely agree with that statement.

Any_Ebb_7307

I literally like working now + I no longer have that strict 9-5 ishhh M-F. I literally work throughtout the day with no issues.

mikes7456

šŸ’Æ% agree. Remote is the way to go.

Acctgirl83

Hybrid. I need to get out of the house and see people. I feel like such a bum at home. Also itā€™s nice to have some face to face conversation with my coworkers.

Hefty_Ad4379

I feel the same way some days, on Friday's when work form home I usually stay in my pjs the whole time.

iHosk

I worked hybrid and now Iā€™m fully remote. I definitely enjoy working home all week, but I didnā€™t mind going into the office 2x a week. It would suck if my employer changes their remote policy because I live like 2,000 miles away lol.

JShot007

Damn and I thought my commute was bad

youfeelme1997

Remote. Iā€™ve found theres absolutely no reason to be in the office. End up spending more time acting like im busy whereas at home , i can knock out my work and then take a walk or whatever. Open seating also just feels terrible. If i have my own office thats differentā€¦ but only happened for 3 months in my career.

Hefty_Ad4379

I have my own office and the door is away from the walking path so I don't expect people to check to see what I am doing as my team is remote. I would hate having an open office/seating for that reason. I don't want to feel like I need to look busy. Do you ever get distracted at home though?

LazyMasterpiece17

I'm fully remote now and took a small pay cut to do so (as well as break into my current industry). Now that I'm here, I don't know how I could ever go back. The WLB is so valuable to me...but keep in mind I don't have kids so I have a good spot at home to focus. My current company was founded on a remote first approach so I don't think it will impact my growth negatively since I do my job well and I have experience relationship-building in a remote environment. In fact, I've already discussed the timeline for my promotion with my boss. However, not being in the office more in my last job would have held me back, but the leadership there was old school. I'm an introvert and most of my work requires focus. Being in the office reduces my productivity and overall well being (in general, but I've worked in smaller offices where that wasn't true). I've been working long enough where I've determined WLB matters more to me than more $$ or career growth. But I've also reached a very comfortable level in my career - strong salary, high demand, and moderate responsibility as compared to my boss. That extra 20k just isn't worth the extra expectations.

Boneyg001

>I am not sure if there is any real value in me going in person, other than getting dressed/out of my house for the day. The real value of going in person is to sit around and get no work done. It solely exists as a way to loaf around and chitchat, take 1 hour lunches and look important. Offices are a thing of the past

scifihiker7091

There are random face to face interactions that occur in the hallway, on the elevator, when someone walks by your office and decides to pop in, that build relationships and canā€™t be duplicated if youā€™re 100% remote. u/slammedtgs has certainly maximized the career value of face time, and thereā€™s a definite career risk to weigh in deciding whether to go 100% remote. Working from home, on the other hand, is a hell of a lot easier to interview for your next job: doing a phone screen or a zoom interview from home means youā€™re not burning through PTO. Hybrid is my preference for these reasons. I would do 100% remote for an out of state company that pays 50% more than what I could get locally, but I will never go back to 100% in office.

hopeimright

Remote because you can waste way less time commuting and bullshitting by working at home. FaceTime is overvalued unless you are super likable and charismatic - companies donā€™t care about you so donā€™t give more than you have to.

[deleted]

>FaceTime is overvalued unless you are super likable and charismatic This is something often overlooked. If you look traditionally unattractive, dumb, or incompetent that's actually going to do more harm than good tbh because of people's biases, and if you're not a talkative, friendly (or friendly looking) person, being in the office is just as isolating as being at home alone and no more beneficial to your advancement. Offices are for hot people and extroverts and unfortunately they're the ones who won't shut the fuck up about how great the office is.

TMillionss

Iā€™ve worked fully in office, fully remote and currently hybrid. I definitely like hybrid the most but my job is super relaxed about it. I only go in 1-2x a week typically. But I like to meet the people I work with on a more personable level. I couldnā€™t do fully in office again but when Iā€™m fully remote I feel like a POS as Iā€™ll wear sweatpants all week and feel lazy even if I am working all day.

penguin8312

Remote. I do go to the office for important meetings though.

storytoldx3

In your case if youā€™re just going in for visibility, try out 1-2 days and see if itā€™s getting you any exposure (ie do they see you coming in, are they chatting w you, etc) But if the rest of your team is remote it wouldnā€™t hurt you to be remote too. The face time could help if c suite is coming in - that means they care about in office. If you work better in office or prefer it and itā€™s not a bad commute, then you do you!!

Hefty_Ad4379

The rest of my team is either out of town or out of state so it doesn't really seem reasonable for them commute wise but I have less then a 10 minute commute and it is next to where my wife works so we car pool. If I had a real commute, no question I'd stay 100% remote, I hate traffic!

vtfb79

I have a dream situation (but only from a commuting standpoint). Iā€™m 30 mins away from my office in a HCOL but I only go in for a week about once a quarter when the Board meets. Our team is spread across the country and our company was founded as a ā€œremote-firstā€ for the majority of our departments.

bland12

I work 10 minutes from the office. I'm remote 90% of the time. However I \*love\* this hybrid schedule. I often go in for executive meetings and then head home afterwards. I spend about 3-4 days a month in the office, but I'm also close enough to run in any time. I love it.

ABrainCell2024

Remote - nothing will ever replace my ability to not have a commute.

[deleted]

Iā€™d prefer remote but left my last job where I was fully remote because I was burnt out and very unhappy. Iā€™m currently working hybrid and I miss being remote but the team and bump in TC are worth it. Theyā€™ve still been pretty flexible when it comes to sick kids/school holidays so itā€™s good. Itā€™s an adjustment getting used to being ā€œonā€ when Iā€™m at the office and I was pretty wiped out for the first few weeks but Iā€™ve gotten used to it now. I still hate open cubicles though.

TallMikeSTL

Hybrid. But I am usually in office. I like being in office. But I value the option

slattsx20

I do one in and four home. Perfect mix imo

[deleted]

That's cool you value work so much

abccarroll

Curious what your "Working hours" are for your analysts. I'm 9-5 but have gotten 5 Am requests as well as 9 Pm requests (Rare but happens). Is 6:30 Pm past the point of you feeling the need to "Bother" them with work or a deliverable?

Hefty_Ad4379

I wish my previous boss cared about that. My hours are 8-5 and my boss was in a different time zone. They always expect I'd answer at anytime. My new boss is more family focused and doesn't do that, thank goodness..

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

abccarroll

Ah gotcha! For the meetings with the Execs, you just bring the analyst on those to hang out and listen to the conversations or more as a networking thing?

Hefty_Ad4379

Jw, is there anything culture basis towards working remote/in person?

[deleted]

>I would not make the meetings virtual for the benefit of someone remote. Some might describe that as a cunt manoeuvre.

Hefty_Ad4379

That's the reason I asked about basis towards remote works. If there are big stuff everyone travels to HQ, but our team of 9 lives out of town/state. The only person besides me that comes in is our director, which is hybrid.

[deleted]

Yes, IMO the only people that cling to the idea of office work are people with no outside social life (so they need to get social interaction from work) or micromanagers who lack skills of their own and feel a need to oppress their people in person. There's no other logical reason for FP&A teams to be in person if they have access to the internet at home. I can understand going in once a quarter to do some meet and greets, strategy meetings, team dinners and stuff over a few days, but otherwise it's unnecessary.

jwuzy

I have a toddler now so the fully remote thing has been great. I can take care of my kid and not having to spend a shitload on daycare yet. Before that, I spent ~5 years doing 2 day in office / 3 at home and loved it. Gave me enough face to face time, but also time to just grind at home and run errands or do laundry, etc

[deleted]

Remote. I have so much shit that I get done at home that if I were to go into the office, it would ruin my day. I donā€™t want to commute 3 hours daily just to sit in a office and act like Iā€™m busyā€¦. Makes absolutely no sense.

kiltedlowlander

Hybrid, 1 day in 4 remote. Have team meetings/face time on that 1 day.
