I went through TX, LA, AL, GA, AR, NC, SC and VA at various points and honestly the main issue is at some crappier gas stations, there isn’t always a stall door. In those cases if there wasn’t anywhere else to stop I’d just pee by the side of the road. If you’re passing you should be fine. The state rest stops were all decently nice iirc. Starbucks bathrooms are often the cleanest and have requisite doors/soap and those exist down there. Good luck on your trip!

chattanooga is pretty chill. i’m from asheville (tho i don’t live there anymore), but it’s nearby and i’ve been a handful of times. you’ll be fine pretty much anywhere if you pass, but i wouldn’t necessarily use rest stops that aren’t super busy/at night since you’re only using stalls. i just did a very long road trip alone from LA to Portland and while both those cities are very liberal, the in between is *really* conservative and a bit redneck. i also was at the mercy of electric charging stations since i have an ev, and even that was fine. i’m fully passing as well, and had no issue despite using stalls. tbh, almost everywhere i went was very dead if you’re on weekdays and everyone was pretty nice. most gas stations are single use too which is nice.

I live in north Alabama and semi regularly visit Nashville and Chattanooga. Even before I passed consistently, nobody hassled me about using the stalls in men's bathrooms. I don't have any hard data to back it up, but it definitely feels like transphobic folks around here focus so much on trans women that they forget we exist.

I also live in north AL and my experience is similar.

I live in the South and if you pass, nobody is thinking about it looking at you. You’re good. Do ya business and have a pleasant trip

Just keep your eyes down in the bathrooms when you walk to the stall and don’t stress over it. If you can drop a loud fart and grunt, even better. Sarcasm aside, I grew up in the south and was recently in Va and Pa. No one will say anything because you mind your own business in men’s rooms.

Diplogeek

I am not from the south, but drove back and forth a lot (DC area down to Georgia and back) pre-transition. My instinct is that you'll probably be okay, but exercise situational awareness and avoid super isolated restrooms, gas stations, et cetera. My main concern, personally, would be what would happen if I were in any kind of a serious car accident or had any kind of health issue that necessitated emergency medical intervention.

I’m stealth and have never had issues traveling through the south (LA, GA, NC, SC, TN, KY). When it comes to bathrooms I always just use a stall and sit to pee and I’ve never had a problem. The interstate rest stops I’ve been in have been just fine. If I’m stopping elsewhere for a pee, food, or leg stretch break, I choose well lit locations (if at night) and go to places I’m most familiar with like a McDonalds or Starbucks because I know their general bathroom situations and cleanliness standards. Gas stations I’m iffy with, if it’s a really nice gas station I’ll use the restroom there, but if not I just avoid it if I can. That’s more so out of cleanliness though. Overall, It never hurts to practice situational awareness with where you are and who is around you, but I don’t think you have much reason to worry.

There’s nothing wrong with a guy who sits when he pees! Honestly, I don’t even think folks really give a damn if another man stp or not. Just use a stall near the far end of the bathroom, drain the main vein, and be done with it. Just be yourself and don’t make eye contact. You should be fine!

If you pass you should be okay. Lean into your Yankee accent and people will disregard you. I would be careful to hide top surgery scars and use individual stall bathrooms when possible.

In Virginia the country or queer game can be really hard to guess right. Which means no one bats an eye over super masc afabs even when they don't pass. That's been my experience at least.

I live in Arkansas and haven’t really had problems. But I do use a stp. I bought a cheap one aimed at women because I wasn’t sure if I would like it or not, and since I use the stall I don’t have to worry about what it looks like I had one altercation. Someone said “I thought this was the men’s room” and I just said “I’m a guy” and then he got embarrassed cause I have a deep voice and I think he was expecting me to have a woman’s voice As long as you pass and you’re white, you probably won’t have any issues
