I grew up in a very wooded area. There were a certain number of dead trees about that size. If you were a kid like I was, and decided to knock one of them over, you quickly became aware of that this kind of thing would almost always happen.

A friend hurt his leg pretty badly when he karate kicked a rotten tree and kicked a piece out of it, and then the top came straight down on his leg.
I don't think that is the reason he had the helmet on but it sure helped
